Will it have NGP color as well. Or will that be the next step eventually.
I just play it on higan for now. They really should put more cores on that. needs demanding pc because it's accuracy.

This new cd core can run the cartridge games? I cant :/

sonic solstice
#

Yeah, it's loading either for me.

#

You're using the July 03 build that just came down today? Not the NeoCD core, right?

Hmmm. Not sure then. I just loaded a few CD games at 4x and a few cart games and it was seemless.

Looking at the XML file that comes with a romset, I'm wondering if the folder matching the rom name has to be in the NeoGeo root.

Had issues with kof95. Loading was slow even by neogeo cd standards.indeed probably 10 mins or so. I then moved to my pc and checked back later and it actually made it to the title screen. But then the game got stuck when I started it. . Tried the patched version but same behaviour. Will mess around with the bios files…cart gaming still worked fine. Also will check if the games are in individual folders….

cosmic vault
#

Does anyone know what is neo geo cd cracked games ?

south cloud
#

For the CDZ one ?

cosmic vault
south cloud
#

Okay, I could explain you a little bit.
On most recent games on the system, two kinds of copy protection were introduced.

#

The original CD BIOS can't detect backups/burned discs from originals.

#

But the CDZ have some routines which check the size of a specific file.
On burned discs and ISOs, that file doesn't have the correct size and the system refuses to boot the game.

SNK toughen up the copy protection system later on (when they saw the first protection removed easily), with some in-game protections which check some specific ASM codes and if the game is a copy, the system locks up with DISC I/O ERROR 3.

The core reacts exactly the same (and the SDLoader from Furrtek also), you need copy protections to be removed/patched (and in-game protection for some games too).

pallid dagger
#

Got the 4x working with Unibios CD v3.3 and setting the CD Type to "CD" in the MiSTer menu

#

Also for anyone wanting to use USB storage with CHD files, just make a dir called "NeoGeo-CD" in the root of the USB drive and put your .chd files and bios etc, there.
In the /fat/_Console dir add a NeoGeo-CD.mgl file and put this into it:
<mistergamedescription>
<rbf>_Console/NeoGeo</rbf>
<setname>NeoGeo-CD</setname>
</mistergamedescription>

It'll put a new "NeoGeo-CD" core in the Consoles listings that points to the USB drive.
I don't need container dirs for each .chd

south cloud
#

I've done a NGCD folder with the same idea (MGL).

cosmic vault
cosmic vault
south cloud
#

The CDZ version is a third revision of the console.

#

The original system had two revisions : one with a front loader, and one with a top loader.

south cloud
#

The CDZ version came later in SNK history, with a better CD cache and a 2x CD drive.

#

The two earlier versions came with a 1x CD drive.

cosmic vault
#

oh didn't know that good to know hehehe

south cloud
#

That's why the CDZ version is faster for loading games.

cosmic vault
#

So for CDZ I will need the copy protection cracked version of those specific games that won't run on the CDZ boot bios options I get it

south cloud
#

I'm not a Neo Geo expert, by I think maybe inside the original CD BIOS something could restrain the CD drive and maybe that's why the BIOS is blocking around 87-88% when loading games (it wasn't engineered to have a faster CD drive and should expect only 1x speed), but the CDZ revision isn't affected by that restriction.

cosmic vault
# south cloud Correct.

At first I though that maybe some games won't booting cause the neo geo cd core wasn't polished enough but know everything is very clear to me now cause your explanation

#

Thanks again !

ocean phoenix
#

This core doesn’t auto load a sole CHD that’s in a folder.

cosmic vault
# south cloud Correct.

One last question Zet do you know by chance why if I choose:

  • CD Type: CDZ
  • BIOS: UniBIOS

It won't run any game ?

But it has to be set no matter what like this:

  • CD Type: CDZ
  • BIOS: Original

In order to make the core run like a CDZ machine ?

south cloud
#

I've not tested (extensively) with a CDZ UniBIOS.
But I've read earlier today that someone could load a game with the Lid option set to : Open.
Maybe a bug somewhere inside the code.

#

I can't test it right now.

cosmic vault
south cloud
#

Someone crazy enough. 😁

cosmic vault
#

:v

ocean phoenix
#

Because you can do that on the original hardware blobshrug

cosmic vault
ocean phoenix
#

no idea, only the core developer knows

south cloud
#

The advantage of the UniBIOS goes to the copy-protection removed on the fly.
But, I've chosen to use the patched games as I already have the SDLoader ODE on an original system (which needs those files).
And the same files could be retrieved somewhere on archives.

cosmic vault

wary bronze
patent granite
#

Seems unstable. It loaded for me one time, but the others it just boots into the CD player instead

wary bronze
#

I had that at first, but saving settings, doing a soft reboot, and reopening the core shook it out.

I'm on my 11th disc swap so far (CHD files from my NAS) and no hangups.

patent granite
#

Rebooted, the CDZ BIOS blasted static noise instead of its bootup sound but it loaded now

#

Reset and apply after hitting start on the ADK World title screen. CDDA track keeps playing and it only boots to the CD Player screen now

#

This core might need a bit of work to work out some of the kinks I think

wary bronze
#

Can you hit stop on the CD player, and then hit Start?

patent granite
#

yeah, it seems to behave with that

wary bronze
#

I've not used a NGCD before, so I'm not sure if that would be normal behavior if we could make it do things it physically can't.

urban vector
#

Unless I missed something, only the unstable nightlies build has CD support, and the extra BIOS files you need aren't being in the update all BIOS DB yet, so you need to do those manually.

patent granite
#

Well, it turns out update all is grabbing the CD core via main

wary bronze
#

Indeed. Update script didn't pull the CD bios files. I manually added them.

I didn't mess with the core until it was in main.

still gorge
#

Isn't CD in the new release? It's in the release notes

patent granite
#

it is

still gorge
#

Okay people are talking about unstable

urban vector
#

Ah sorry, I missed that today

wary bronze
#

This mess is a 100% working Neo Geo MVS/AES/CD folder 😅

still gorge
#

So if unibios has some issues maybe am MGL would be good, then we could have a separate folder for Neo Geo CD and allow for separate bios settings

wary bronze
#

Fun thing that I'm seeing; unlike other cores that support CHD files, NGCD doesn't seem to need or want them in same name folders.

#

So if I have a [Game Name Folder]/[Game Name CHD].chd...

On say the PSX core, selecting the folder loads the game. On NGCD, it opens the folder and then I select the CHD. 😕

ocean phoenix
#

Yeah, it’s inconsistent with all other cores. I should probably write a GitHub ticket lol

wary bronze
#

I don't mind it, though. 😆
Having to keep ALL CHD files in folders because of multi disc game support is a necessary evil. But NGCD doesn't have any multi disc games, so... shrug

It's a "bug", but kind of a good one.

Totally breaks the consistent UX though.

I think in KOF 95 the cheat menu option is "Blood Color"... I know that's what it is in the Samurai Shodown games. And yes: this is to enable it in the USA region.

One quality of life thing that would be nice to have is if the cd setup could be similar to pc engine cd

Slowly but surely getting these replacement audio tracks cut for Metal Slug Neo Geo CD. Kinda no fun since the new arranged tracks are from a mobile game apk, and pieces of the songs are split up into different files internally.

#

I think the new tracks are going to sound pretty good in game. Just need the proper volume adjustments.

still gorge
#

Wait what is it you're doing? I must have missed that

patent granite
#

So Neo Geo CD games use regular CDDA tracks for music

#

Unlike say a lot of PSX games using XA, or Saturn using pcm etc

#

The music is easily replaced

#

I've already done it for some PC Engine CD games before

#

Metal Slug arranged music is oddly rare and obscure for some reason, I dont know why. Metal Slug 1 and 2 on Neo Geo CD dont have arranged music, just recordings from the MVS/AES version. So I cracked open an apk for Metal Slug Awakening (mobile game, 1.9gb) and extracted the proprietary music files, converted them to .wav and Im cutting new arranged tracks for Metal Slug 1 Neo Geo CD.

Need to find where to disable db9 fork

I got one of them and it's really neat to know your getting a lagless experience on the core.

I've tested the core during the last hour, just to be sure that I don't find any regression before posting the RBF file.
Double Dragon works correctly now.
EDIT : Gowcaizer works too - on the voices and SFX now.
EDIT 2 : The UniBIOS have boot sounds now, but really scratchy & annoying. The 'closed/opened' lid bug remains.
EDIT 3 : The sound bug on SamSho RPG remains.

Loving the Neo Geo CD games so far! Anyone know the proper syntax for MGL files w/ Neo Geo CD games?

I've tried SamSho RPG and the bug is there even with the new PR.

shy bane

How do you reproduce it? Any specific steps?

south cloud

Just a moment.

k

south cloud
#

How I've reproduced the bug - I've taken the Galford route (the blond hair guy on the far right on the selection screen).
Begin your game after 3-4 mins of talking characters.
Go south on the map, near the village and some random battle will begin.
After that battle, the music will go crazy as reported by the other user.

#

(I can't save that early in the game, too bad)

shy bane
#

OK cool. I'll report this to Paul. Thank you

south cloud
#

You're welcome.

shy bane
#

Does SSRPG work for anyone else at 4x? Mine crashes after the load screen on 4x. This is with CDZ & UniBIOS.

haughty veldt
#

It doesn't. You need to set it to 2x (or 1x) for the game to run properly.

shy bane
#

Interesting thank you. I wonder if it's playable on Furtek's SD loader

#

I believe it runs at 4x

haughty veldt
#

Not sure if it's an issue with the MiSTer core or not. It's the only game I tested personally that doesn't work at 4x.

#

There's also an audio bug with the game.

shy bane
#

Right yeah

#

Paul is going to investigate that

south cloud
#

The game throws an exception with the UniBIOS too.

shy bane
#

yep. only works at 1x or 2x

#

would be cool if the core allowed per-game speed setting so we can leave it on 4x except for this game. or maybe Paul could just ignore anything above 2x for it

limber atlas
spiral orbit
#

I'm so looking forward to the SSRPG translation

shy bane
#

I was thinking of something similar to how, I believe, the MCD core works. IIRC you can put a BIOS file into the game folder and it'll use that instead of the system-defined BIOS. Like we could put a "2x" file into the game folder and the core would run it at that speed.

Just quickly tested out the whole official Neo Geo CD library. By testing out, I mean I launched every official game and played for about 2 minutes. Here are my settings and my findings:
-CD Type: CDZ
-Bios: UniBios
-CD Speed: 4x
-CD Lid: Opened
Every game booted into gameplay so that's great! Didn't dive deep into the games, but just wanted to ensure compatibility across the board. The only issues I've run into is a few audio issues. FYI, I'm using all CHD files if that helps. Here are the games w/ audio issues:
-Double Dragon (missing sound effects in match)
-Ragnagard (no audio at all in match)
-Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (missing sound effects in match)
As mentioned, the only issues I've run into with these settings are audio issues. Can I ask if other people are experiencing these issues?

wary bronze
#

Have you tested those games with the original bios?

crimson rivet
#

Let me try that out

#

...

wary bronze
#

Just to rule out if it's the core, unibios weirdness, or both.

south cloud
#

And we have reported to paulb-nl the problem on Samsho RPG after some minutes inside the game.

crimson rivet
urban vector
#

Just make sure any bugs found are logged on GitHub, as Paul isn't on Discord so if they aren't logged he won't know about them

crimson rivet
#

Trying Double Dragon with the new build and it gets stuck about 1/3rd of the way through the loading screen

crimson rivet
south cloud
#

That issue isn't fixed at the moment.

#

Only sound problems are fixed.

#

If you want to test that game, you should load another game before with the core.

robust ivy
#

Out of curiosity, is there any incentive to using .neo versions of standard neogeo roms versus folders and MRAs? Like any loading speed advantage or less size used up?

#

Not sure a .neo is anything other than just a special renamed archive by a quick glance

crimson rivet
#

Update: with the build from yesterday, I can confirm that the music and sound effects work for all 3 afftected games with the original bios. Now to test them out with the UniBios on the build from yesterday...

limber atlas

Paul probably knows about all these issues

#

still gorge
crimson rivet
#

Update: The sound issues from the 3 games I mentioned have been fixed with the core build from yesterday. Double Dragon, Ragnagard and Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer have all their music and sound effects working properly with original, Unibios and with CDZ!

#

Also, Double Dragon loads fine so that bug may've been fixed as well

#

Haven't had any issues with 4x loading

full raven
#

I remember having problems with double dragon in a TOP LOADING machine... The game autoreseted when first loading only if it was the first game to boot after the machine was stopped for hours. If you load any other game and then load double dragon, it doesn't fail. I had a simmilar problem with Ninja Combat... STRANGE THINGS !

crimson rivet
#

Only game that appears to have issues now is Stakes Winner on the latest build. Tried every setting in the core, with and without Unibios but there's a warning message that I think is about RAM issues. Deduced that because that was the only word in English before booting me back to the bios lol

south cloud
#

"Not enough space for Backup RAM."

crimson rivet

Ah, so this is a known issue?

I don't know, I've just seen the issue too and I'm translating rapidly the message.

Brings up an interesting question, is there a workaround to fix something like this besides deleting your save data? Could save data be handled on a per game basis?

I've updated the issue ticket too before leaving home for today.

And it doesn't make its own memory card?

crimson rivet

Well I was able to go into the internal memory and delete my Neo Turf Masters profile to get Stakes Winner to work and I wasn't loading up Neo Turf Masters. That suggests that it's a system wide save procedure if I understand correctly

still gorge
#

Right

#

Well one workaround could be the folder method like in other systems

crimson rivet
#

Yeah I mentioned that in my Github ticket. It wasn't as eloquent as I'd like it to be, but I think it conveys the idea lol

Looks like sorg made the commit to save per CD on the latest unstable builds. He comented this on my recent Github ticket. Rejoice! Gonna test now!

I already closed the ticket so I'd feel like I'm pushing my luck if I opened another lol

I might wait until the folder thing migrates to official release unless you think I should strike now lol

I think that'd just be the new unstable mister in in #unstable-nightlies wouldn't it

still gorge

Oh cool

So would the second build here, include the changes from the one before it?

zinc rampart

the second build is the neogeo core

the first build is mister main

so different thingers

still gorge

oh dang

so it's part of main?

crimson rivet

It's part of the latest unstable main so it's not part of the official main repo yet

still gorge

Right so I need to grab that main and the latest unstable neo geo?

crimson rivet

Yes. I don't like using unstable main tbh so I deleted it after verifying it works.

still gorge
#

well right I wouldn't keep it

#

I've never used an unstable main

zinc rampart
#

unstable main has usually been pretty stable in my experience

still gorge
#

so how do I use this main, where do I put it

crimson rivet
# still gorge I've never used an unstable main

Neither have I until today to test this lol. Just rename your current main MiSTer.old and rename the unstable to "MiSTer". Once you've tested it to your liking, then delete it or keep it and rename MiSTer.old back to MiSTer

still gorge
#

does it replace "MiSTer" in my FAT partition?

#

perfect thanks

bitter spire
#

Replace the file that says "MiSTer", not to be confused with other files that have the file format in the name.

still gorge
#

is this something I can do over SSH while it's running or is that bad lol

zinc rampart
#

you can do it over ssh

still gorge
#

perfect going to try now thank you 🙂

zinc rampart
#

rename MiSTer, put the unstable MiSTer in its place, and reboot for good measure

still gorge
#

yep got it

#

adding the latest neo geo too

#

Alright I can confirm that it does not load the game at the top level, but Sega CD, TGCD, and PSX do

#

So just open an issue, @crimson rivet ?

crimson rivet
still gorge
#

Yes I do

#

I assume this is where I need to post it?

crimson rivet
#

Yeah. I'd post it myself, but I've been talking to sorg all day and don't want to pester him

still gorge
#

Thanks 🙂

crimson rivet
#

I'd just title it something like: "Request: support for top level cd loading like other CD cores" and describe the issue

#

Since sorg is focusing on this core now he's super fast to respond.

still gorge
#

how's this

ocean phoenix
#

"inconsistent" is a trigger word

still gorge
#

good or bad lol

ocean phoenix

I followed you

I was hoping it would trigger

You'd think though if people want consistency they'd clean up those ROM folder names, wowza

crimson rivet

Has anyone had any luck loading cd images off of an external SSD? The core works fine with images on the SD card, but I'm just getting a blank screen with my external drive. The files on the SSD are selectable on the Mister (I deleted the NeoGeo-CD folder off of the SD card), and I verified that I have all the required bios files. I also can load PCE CD games off of the SSD without any issues.
