Cute little Xevious clone
Trio the Punch is delightfully strange. It's on PS4 and Switch via Arcade Archives.
Hmmm - for some reason this disappeared from my list
It is because no new messages since some days
hello , anyone knows why some games looks like that on the msx2 core (MSX1_20230203.rbf) thanks!
no idea if here is the place to ask this , on the sorgelic or the msx core we got long time ago we can see R800 and turbo options there
but really is not a turbo R simulation right?
if for example I run some Turbo R game , the system tell me "SORRY no TURBO R"
this is because not a Turbo R implementation there right?
or maybe Im wrong
this is what I get when run a Turbo R game
if someone can clarify me this , I would appreciated , thanks in advance
There's no R800 support in any of the two MSX cores. So that option you mention (on the old OCM core) wasn't even supposed to work.
Thanks , is true that activating R800&turbo options the simulation goes faster
I like the new Core but seems to get some colour problems at this moments , not sure is are me or the core needs improved...
Hi @fallen summit ! 🙂
it seems you have an aspect ratio of 16:9
and not 4:3
switch to narrow v-integer
ah , that are the Digital signal ,I dont care about 😄 I use my old good 1084 on the analog signal 😋
oh - I don't know
allways
that screenshot looks like 16:9
yes , was a quick snapshoot
but was curious about that R800 option
and the end seems to be only a fake option , right? 😄
so , what about the new msx1/msx2 core ?¿
that uses some kind of vg8045/40 roms?¿
do you have same colour issues i show here ?
works nice , the way its works
but a little confuse what is the lasted one
are this one the last?
color issue?
you mean roadfighter?
not sure if your rom is corrupt
because the progress meter on the right doesn't look right
yes extrange , are the link above the lasted core?
or there are another core somewhere?
Amiga version was created with love and professionality
Auto answer , yes that wrong colours was due the BIOS used , solved using Philips NMS-8250 Rom bios files \o/

you are famous 🙂
well I would hope that I have made some impact on the MSX scene
The v3 of the patch for Valis II / MSX2 grew to a full enhancement patch and I have just published it.
You can now enjoy the game play at a much better frame rate/responsiveness.
Download: https://t.co/ouNb5y4IBr
A video of the v3 soundtrack will be published soon.
#MSX #VALIS
Excellent
I wish I could tell you guys what I have here 🙂
You can say it. We won't tell anyone 😄
If you want to try the new TEST build of MSX, you can download it here https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/raw/MSX2test/releases/MSX1_20230611_test.rbf Everything is different from previous versions. No boot.rom, no loading of roms from MSX computers, but you have to prepare a package with the necessary files. Sample packages can be found here https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/tree/MSX2/tools/CreateMSXpack/MSX/C-BIOS and finally the necessary files for creating predefined MSX models https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/blob/MSX2test/releases/CreateMSXpack.zip
Thank you Molekula 🙂
Are Slot SCC/SCC+ and mapper type R-type need some fixes to work ?
R-type in the next version. SCC/SCC+ yes
I salute you for your hard work. But I tried to test your new MSX core but I don‘t know how to use it, how does firm ware bios load and what are *.msx files?
on the OSD, you have
Load ROM PACK "*.MSX" -> It is rom pack of MSX model (MSX1, MSX2)
Load FW PACK "*.MSX" -> It is FW pack containing FMPAC, Game Master 2 and FDC rom used for floppy of MSX1
you need to use the package https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/blob/MSX2test/releases/CreateMSXpack.zip
it is python script to generate MSX Pack for FW and MSX Model you want (some are presents)
@craggy iris thanks for the new version
are there a lot of changes since I last tested it?
I have unpacked and checked the MSX pack file but I don‘t know what to do with it.
It required to have python 3 installed on your computer
and on rom directory you need to put rom files
you praise the cowgods and sprinkle holy water on your desk - make 3 pirouettes and jump in the air while yelling 'ni ni ni ni ni'
and then it magically works
and execute the script
in MSX/C-BIOS directory you have C-BIOS files already produced if you want to try it
yeah cbios can be distributed freely
yeah 🙂
I can tell you this since I know it's open source and I'm part of that team too 😄
some examples of files present on my rom directory
great stuff
with C-Bios is there a way to use floppy even if we need to use retail disk bios ?
What is the difference between “load rom pack” and “load fw pack” in the osd menu?
#1056033525922537542 message
If you load "MSX - C-BIOS.MSX" on load rom pack the core will start in MSX 1 mode with C-Bios of MSX1
and for "MSX2 - C-BIOS.MSX" it will be MSX2 mode
@karmic rover that only answers half the question 😄
So all created .msx should in msx1 folder?
I just add an example of my previous comment link above 🙂
@fallen summit we need a good FAQ 🙂
yes you need to transfert them to MSX1 folder on your MiSTer
The uploading of ROM and working with BRAM and SDRAM has been completely revamped. Nothing has remained in its place. In return, it is easy to add new MSX models and subsequently implement further extensions. Errors may appear where they were not before or were removed in the past.
It should be added that names are not used at all. The deciding factor is the MD5 hash.
Where'd you find that? 😄
commit comments
MFRDS ROM jako celek. Potrebuji kvuli flash
I guess you need a flasher
syntax infinity hangs now with the sony dmkii
Does anyone have a simple program for testing SCC and SCC+ ?
trilotracker would be a good thing to have
it's a 'mod' tracker
this works great 😄
Rather, I would need to control each channel in a controlled manner
oh - not that I know
a music player could be usefull ?
Anything that can selectively play channel by channel.
trilotracker
or I could write a basic program
SCC basically is writing a waveform - volume and frequency to a bunch of addresses
I guess that's the way it's gonna work out. I'm gonna write some test code.
Konami's Synthesizer (1986)(Konami)(Japan)(Program)(MSX1)(Konami SCC)
Thanks, but it's a bit cumbersome 🙂 I'll probably stick with the utility I can protest the behavior after each change.
ok
Simulation looks better than reality
Eh 127 is the middle point -127 / +128
And then there is a small discrepancy in the frequency with psg vs scc
Can’t remember the details been a while
Hi! I am trying the CreateMSXpack python program on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and it makes my computer unusable (it captures the mouse and keyboard input, and nothing appears on screen: I have to switch TTY to kill it but even then I have to restart X11 session to regain control).
Maybe I am doing something wrong?
I am simply executing createMSXpack.py
Hi, The normal command for Python is "python3 createMSXpack.py"
Ah, that made it, thanks!
Where should the MSX machine definitions go? In /media/fat/games/MSX1 or in /media/fat/games/MSX1/MSX?
You just needs to put on MSX1 folder and you need to load them on the OSD
After loading it will use for next boots of the core until you change your MSX Pack or FW pack
I was missing the FW-PACK. Now I have FM music too. Thanks!
Great !
Gathering the Game Master 2 ROM was not easy.. seems to be missing from the file-hunter BIOS pack..
For me it's not a problem but I hope normal users don't have to do all this when the core is released 😛
next step is to produce xml description of MSX 1 and MSX 2 missing 😅
Do i need to cooy all of this created file to msx1 folder on mister? Or just c-bios folder with its msx file on it, cart_fw.msx and cart_fw_en.msx to root of msx1 folder? Do i need to copy all other system machine folder to msx1 also?
It depends of MSX model you want to use
C-Bios lack of the support Disk support on basic mode for information
It's true. It's a signed signal. I've already detected the problem. You can see here that half the signal is clipped. The PSG within the core is an unsigned signal.
nice
I once wrote the SCC toys for openMSX
and also made the visualizer and editor
so it brought back memories
MSX2 test release
Fix broken channel2 SCC/SCC+
Add R-Type mapper
When I tried to set it, I have black screen with the last test release
R-Type working again and sound of roms SCC is great 🙂
Still issues to use slot SCC and SCC+ I'm not able to launch snatcher or sd snatcher
My black screen is maybe link that CART_FW.xml doesn't have megaflashrom roms
yes with CART_FW_EN.xml when Megaflashrom is set on slot A, Nextor is loaded
oh nice
This slot will permit or maybe it is already the case to boot on the vhd ?
can I update the CART_FW.xml to add the missing contains ?
I hope the new core will also support vdp 9958, I hope the space manbow‘s sprite will be improved.
Does the new msx core also support the koei game sram save?
What is the difference between CART_FW.msx and CART_FW_EN.msx?
did you even look at the SRAM options? 😄
Is there a particular MSX machine which has most of the features you'd want, and which a pack can be created for? Like the openmsx fantasy machine?
that's an MSX2+
this is MSX2
but I assume it won't take too much effort to make it into an MSX2+
maybe a next full release?
Cart fw.msx contains fmpac and gamemaster in Japanese the en one is in English.
maybe we can rename CART_FW.msx to CART_FW_JP.msx
@craggy iris in the game "The Lost World" (floppies games MSX2 FM-PAC Version) with older core (before MSX Packs) and 128KB VRAM set in Advanced Settings. The game stars.
But since the MSX Pack MSX core, I have this message when I tried to launch the game and I checked msxdiag, it shows VRAM 128KB on his side
@karmic rover Edit the Sony XML file and give yourself more RAM: block_count 4 is the default 64kb, 8 is 128kb and 16 is 256kb. Then just re-make the .msx
This also solves the Syntax Infinity, SD Snatcher, Uzix etc (apps/games/demos who need 128kb+).
Thanks 🙂 It is kind of hack 😅 normally those games work with 128KB !
Sony XML has default 64kb RAM 🙂
Speaking of Sony F1-XDmk2, the bios/sub/disk ROMs used are actually the same for F1-XD (same SHA). Differences on real HW I think are the floppy drive being belt driven on mk2 and having grey instead red cover part.
The Sony HB-F1XDmk2 is a cost reduced version of the HB-F1XD. The features and functions are identical, but the casing is a slightly darker black and the red FDD cover has changed to grey.
So it appears that also originally NMS 8250 came with 128kB while Sony F1-XD with 64kB RAM
Thanks !
I think it was VRAM but it is main RAM. the older core MAIN RAM was 128KB by default 😅
So many rams i'm lost 😭 so no issue
Think MSXDOS2 is kinda broken (or at least I had some issues on 11.06 version of the core). Loading MSXDOS22 rom in slot 1/2 (as I did before to use DOS 2 disks) will make the core going into reboot loop. Figured out it is supported/included with MegaFlashRom instead, will have to check more and also on the new version of the core 🙂
Oh, and if anyone wonders, the CreateMSX script works fine on MiSTer linux, that's how I create my .msx files/modified the .xml to my liking etc
Have you made a XML description of NMS 8250 ? If it is not I will try to do it on my side.
no, i just used the ones that come in the package
the only one I really modified (and split in two) was the F1XD. Made one with 128kB and one with 256kB, plus removed the "mk2" part of roms names.
if you want, I can share them lol
no need thanks !
but maybe it is better to have NMS 8250 in place F1XD on MSX Pack to support more MSX2 contents
I use both, usually if smth not working on F1XD, i switch to NMS to see if it is the same issue :). That's how I looked up in the RAM issue above
I opened cart_fw_en.xml inside the cratemsxpack folder. It wasn't just a different language. cart_fw_en.msx has a lot of special system roms.
yes there is more elements used by the slot MegaFlashROM.
If I use cart_fw.msx, I can‘t use megaflash function?
MSXDOS2 works with CART_FW_EN and MegaFlashROM in slot 1. It will boot in MM (MultiMente) GUI, Floppy images would be in drive B. So press, "L" to change the drive, then either use command2.com to go into DOS shell and do whatever you need to, or just directly run the .com files needed from the floppy.
There may be a simpler way, just didn't had the time to read more on MegaFlash/Nestor stuff yet :))
me gusta
😍
unknow reality work but with lot of scramble screen
The current ram of the new msx core is 128kb. How much ram do we need?
It is enough for most of the MSX2 contents ! My gif is just to respond to TO last message with 768KB for main ram
256KB 😛 That is the maximum for now, unless the extra 512KB from MFR
@karmic rover interesting, SymbOS recognizes only the 512KB MFR ones. If no MFR used, it recognizes the "normal" 256KB I assigned it
Yes maybe it could be great to test on another emulator or on real msx to see if it is the correct behavior
I have a real MSX (exactly Sony HitBit F1 XD-mk2 lol), but not other expansions and such. Will see on OpenMSX at some point, though for this i kinda wanna wait for VHD support. It's bit fiddly to strip it down to 720 Kb floppy, and not much fun as it would lack most of stuff
ok let us know when you have time to do the test again
I know that the Main ram needs 512kb or more in the illusion city english game.
Haaaa... Abadia Del Crimen (Abbey of Crime) didn't work before (even with 256 KB) but works now with MFR in slot 1 😄 just hit the autoexec.bas from MM
with 265KB or less it would crash with an error "memory whatever at line 100 smt"
Is it not a turbo R game ?
The original game runs on turbo-R, but this game with language patch runs on 512kb msx2.
so it could be work with the patch version
🙂
so MFR works now?
SRAM option does not work, if you select koei in the mapper option, koei game will not run. I think koei sram is not working.
that sounds likea bug doesn't it?
yes it doesn't seem to have a mapper for koei

good - no one plays those games anyway
no good translations and I don't read Japanese
Does this support msx2+ or not yet?
nop
KOEI and other mappers containing SRAM are awaiting reimplementation. I have finished the preparation for SRAM storage.
could you send me the MFR firmware ?

IK PRAAT NIET ENGELS ANYMORE ---- what a mixture...
Where did he dig it up from? Hiroshima?😱
Had to go and pet mine, to assure it is safe and sound and to forget what i saw 😄
Panasonic FS-A1
you missed the FDC (floppy disk rom). Counter-checking with OpenMSX, think it is this. Will try to generate an xml after i identify it
it doesn't seem to have fdc in the slot map
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Panasonic_FS-A1
The Panasonic FS-A1 was available in black and in red.
right. it is very accurate your image, just reduces the usability on standard
the new core of yesterday you can add an FDC on a slot A like MSX1 for MSX2 that doesn't have FDC
I will try to make https://www.msx.org/wiki/Panasonic_FS-A1F (with disk rom and better UI)
The Panasonic FS-A1F MSX2 is basically a FS-A1mkII with a built-in 3.5" floppy disk drive mounted on the front of the case, below the keyboard. The FS-A1F was available in black. It was aimed at the Japanese market.
LOL. I was still on 13th of June version, you're absolutely right :))) Now on last ver 😄
I will join the fun tonight - got a bunch of meetings right now
If you guys give me your packages I'll host them
I'll also update the documentation this weekend
it doesn't seem to work correctly ... the size of MSX pack is bigger than FS A1 maybe the core doesn't support it
I share the xml just in case if you see issue in it
I love this core
Please elaborate. What's wrong?
msxdiag shows the correct info but when it tried to launch the cockpit
Normally I would have this
but in the core I have that so it seems stuck
the size of the MSX pack is 131,8KB
And what model would that be?
It is this one https://www.msx.org/wiki/Panasonic_FS-A1F
The Panasonic FS-A1F MSX2 is basically a FS-A1mkII with a built-in 3.5" floppy disk drive mounted on the front of the case, below the keyboard. The FS-A1F was available in black. It was aimed at the Japanese market.
but maybe my xml description is not correct
oh fun .... removing the disk rom image from the MFR is not possible
😄
you're stuck with having it autoboot to multi-mente
F3 Erase ROM disk rom not work ?
@craggy iris we are treading into an area where the inter compatibility problems with MSX models is becoming a thing. For the final release we should settle on a MSX machine they people should use (in documentation only for obvious reasons) and just pick the most compatible MSX model with the implementation
Be it a real or a fantasy machine is not really relevant since the OCM is a fantasy concoction too
I am really enjoying the core like it is now 🙂
Sony HB-F1
those are very beautiful
I had this model
cyberpunk computer
it has a 6 mhz mode, but it breaks everything
If you settle on a single machine, are there machines that do both PALand NTSC?
Panasonic FS-A1F use Toshiba's FDC. It seems not working in this core. Many Philips and Sony machines use WD FDC. It works fine.
This stuck is caused by Toshiba's FDC. I have the same symptom.
Ok thank you !
Have you made others MSX model ?
Not much. It's Daewoo CPC-400S, Panasonic FS-A1F, FS-A1, some Sony MSX2s.
I will make some Korean MSX1 this weekend.
Great do not hesitate to share or post your XML files on GitHub
Okay, i'll do
I have post some on my side 🙂
I tried the awx53ii (msx2 Arabic one) but it hangs before to show the MSX logo
I'm familiar with Arabic MSX but that symptom is interesting.
I can share the XML file in one or two hours if you want to check
I used Mame bios roms I couldn't find all bios roms for openmsx
When I comment out FDC on AX350II XML, it seems booting well without disk drive.
Is there any reference guide to make keyboard layout in XML?
@craggy iris ^^ I've suspected the FDC to be a point of failure - I think different MSX models expect different FDC controllers/hardware
see my post earlier about " inter compatibility problems "
so I think we should stick to just an MSX like machine - like OCM
or expand the FDC controllers ... which I don't think will be sustainable
not saying to duplicate the OCM 😄
for the moment there is no documentation of how make the xml
I think the core is too young to draw such conclusions. Having more options may not be such a problem.
oh
keyboard layout is a conversion table between ps2 keyboard and PPI port of MSX computer. The ScanCode received from the keyboard is converted to rows and columns connected to the PPI using this 512 byte table. So to define the layout, you need to know the HW connection of the keyboard. A higher nibble is a row and a lower nibble is a column.
well FDC behaves differently on different models
As Vampier writes here, some MSX models use a different floppy drive controller. At this time, Western digital WDxxxx controllers are supported. Support for other controllers needs to be worked out, and it won't be for a while in this case. You can find out what type of controller is used for a particular model from the OpemMSX definition. If the <WD2793 id="Memory Mapped FDC"> element is in the XML definition, success can be expected. If it is as in this case it is not worth even trying. It will lead to a deadlock. <TC8566AF id="Memory Mapped FDC">
Thank you for the information to identify it on OpenMSX and your time on this project 🙂
Something I've wondered for a bit:
When this core was starting, the question came up of what ROM to use. The machine is a Philips, but I found the ROM as a Goldstar, and as a ROM for other seemingly unrelated machines. Is this ROM actually from some sort of reference design that a bunch of companies used as is?
Well the ROMs you are referring to are BIOS files
And with all different manufacturers doing their MSX lines things got a bit weird
Can you make multi-slot available instead of 2 slots in the new msx core? I want to use megflash rom and fmpac rom at the same time while running the game rom.
That doesn’t make sense to me. That’s what the megaflash ROM is for. It might be possible to load the ROM content from OSD and “flash” it into the megaflash rom. At the same time, loading the ROM directly from OSD could cause problems associated with selecting the mapper. Therefore, I think this cartridge should be used as the author suggests. Adding another slot is HW limited and the core design is for a maximum of two external slots. However, there are MSX models that have FM internally. The core is ready for it, I just haven’t gotten around to preparing the XML definition.
Zanac ex ehnaced rom needs megaflashrom SD to play double psg sound and use fm pac music.
Then you need to place the Zanac ROM on a floppy disk or SD card and "flash" it to MegaFlash. After rebooting MSX, the ROM will boot from MegaFlash. I haven't added PSG to MegaFlash yet, but I don't see a problem in adding it in the next version.
Thank you. I want to use Daewoo cpc-300 bios, but I will move on to the tutor screen as shown in the screen below. Is there any way to skip this screen permanently?
Not yet, in my opinion. You need to store the CMOS RAM from the RTC where the skipping information is stored. I haven't dealt with this yet. I have a low priority plan to do this.
MSX noob here. How do I start troubleshooting when a game doesn't work? Wanted to try Aleste 2. I got the Nosferatu vhd from 2023-02-25 and Aleste 2 plays music but only shows me a black screen. Other games I tried so far are working. I'm using hdmi vsync_adjust 0 can this be a problem with some games?
You use rom game or disk game ?
Im loading a vhd
I understand you using the OCM MSX Core and loading the VHD
But in the VHD, you load a game on Sofarun I presume Is it a Rom or a DSK ?
Oh those damn MSX vampires ….
Must be a distant or close relative of you 😎
I'll check what Im loading.
It's a .rom file it says Aleste 2 Theme - WYZ (mirrored) rom
if it is named Theme maybe it is just the music 😅
originally it is a floppy game and a hack version existed the size rom is 2MB to store the 3 floppies of the game
Okay no I feel silly 😅
Last time i try, aleste 2 Works And it was in the msx2 files
in this VHD normally the game will be named "A/Aleste 2 - Compile (1989) [ROM Version] [v8 by Ricbit] "
@sour turret Do you have the latest vhd version?
Ah thanks! Now I understand, I somehow went into the MSX folder in the vhd and then forgot that a msx2 folder even exists
It should be hopefully be the newest. It's from 25. February this year. It's the newest I found
That's right
it took me times to understand how to save on metal gear with the new core 😅
Oh boy - it was a mistake adding that one
yes that VHD is the latest - it will also be the last one

New version on GitHub
MSX2 test release
Update of createMSXpack
Added new MSX modles
Added ASCII16 SRAM2 mapper
Added ASCII16 SRAM8 mapper
Added Second PSG to MFRSD
thank you Molekula 🙂
Maybe an interesting tool for VRAM
https://twitter.com/aoineko_fr/status/1670409707213803521
you're on a roll 😄
I have tested ASCII16 SRAM2 mapper for Hydlide II.
I manage to generate the SRAM save file.
For the SRAM to be reconiszed and load in game. we need to create a new character on start screen and load the SRAM and load last save game to retreive previous saved character.
The SRAM is may not loaded automatically I presume and also if I tried to load the SRAM on start screen the saved character is not proposed.
I'll check. I am working on autoload after uploading ROM/FW/MSX. In the final version, SRAM should store extra for ROM and for expansion cartridges (fmpac, Gm2 etc..) and also according to slot position.
Thanks for the continued work on this, @craggy iris
It's becoming my favorite 8bit computer core, no doubt 😄
Today's release doesn't have a new .RBF, right?
I mean, it's a firmware pack only release, right?
Ah! Great! 😄
Done
@craggy iris Maybe I am looking at the wrong repo, but I can't see a new RBF in https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/tree/MSX2test/releases
@cyan horizon What now ?
Yes, now it's there! Thanks a lot!
BTW, what's with fc80han.rom? It's not on file-hunter and even google doesn't return a single result for that file
I don't know. I'm not the author of these models.
Hmm... @fallen summit Do you know what's goin on with fc80han.rom?
Also @craggy iris SCC+ sound in Snatcher doesn't seem to work. Maybe that's known?
@cyan horizon SD snatcher or snatcher ?
Snatcher
on my side I have music sound on Snatcher (jp version) mode SCC+
What is the version of Snatcher are you using ?
I have the HDD install by Caetano (it's translated to english too)
it is the version with 4 floppies and it could be used with floppy or installed on hdd ?
with this version on floppy mode I have sound also on SCC+
However the SCC mode (Caetano version) is kind of weird less percusion than PSG version available in this title.
The JP version on SCC mode is way better.
also on floppy mode with Caetano version you need to choose the slot (0 to 3) for SCC/SCC+ module have you set it correctly ?
fc80 has goldstar hangul bios 1.0. and fc80u has goldstar hangul bios 2.0. except hangul bios version, these two models are same machine.
Here is fc8-han.rom
@craggy iris I tried to build Hitachi MB-H3
It is MSX2 with 64KB VRAM but the XML file doesn't permit to set the amount of VRAM if it is different of 128KB VRAM.
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Hitachi_MB-H3
That is a correct observation. There is no support for it.
Checking the last commit with SRAM updated and it is working now.
I have my character previously created on the list on title screen of Hydlide II
Thank you 👍
MSX2 test release
SRAM upload fix
Added automatic loading of SRAM after filling ROM
Added ASCII8 SRAM, KOEI, Wizardi mappers
I have reached a state where I have implemented everything I wanted. Now, I would like to focus on bug fixing and addressing incompatibilities. Therefore, I kindly request those who are interested in testing to report any errors on GitHub, along with a description of what exactly is not working. This includes specifying the MSX model and the specific software version, preferably with the SHA1 of the corresponding file. Reports containing only the software name are entirely insufficient. This would greatly simplify the process of identifying the bug. For verification and functionality comparison, I use openMSX. If an error is found in openMSX, I no longer search for it in the core. The reason being that I do not have any real hardware available to verify whether it is an emulation or software error. Regarding new extensions, I welcome suggestions that are within my capabilities and have a higher demand from interested users. Feel free to vote on it 🙂
Regarding the new extensions, Support of MSX Music (FM) as bios will be appreciated. 😊
Please link to the wiki for exactly what this is about.
I'll find out the wiki for that. But it takes time. In the meanwhile, Let me explain more.
Many MSX2 users mod their hardware to pseudo-MSX2+.
It's changing VDP9938 to VDP9958 and put FM-PAC inside their MSX2 computer.
In theory, if we add panasonic fs-a1fx's msx music bios and FM-PAC HW to MSX2 computer, then it's working like FM-PAC inside.
Current MSX1 FPGA core has FM-PAC HW. If createMSXPack support FMPAC as bios like FDC did, then core can detect if their is FMPAC inside bios and enables FM PAC HW.
Then we can use SLOT A and SLOT B freely.
This is just my idea.
MSX2+ feature only (not all msx2+ models though)
And turbo-r
I agree your opinion. I just thought it's easily doable in this core. But nevermind!
The Panasonic fs-A1fx didn’t have MSX music 😉 I got one
Yes it a nice thing to have I agree
Sorry, it's fs-a1wx
Yup that one has it
Also a nice machine
@craggy iris MSX Audio/music is a nice thing to have. But if you plan the implement msx2+ then it will be included anyway
@stuck valve the sram part isn’t included with MSX audio right?
@craggy iris will you accept to move this old ticket on MiSTer-Devel issues list ?
https://github.com/tdlabac/MSX1_MiSTer/issues/25
thanks @stuck valve i was too lazy to look it up myself - and my memory is getting a bit hazy now that I haven't looked into it for a few years
yes
Okay. I was counting on the internal OPLL. It will be a minor modification to the MSX package creation plus a bit of logic inside the core.
Has anyone tried manbow 2?
yes it works
Thanks, gonna try it while get home
I intend to roll out https://www.msx.org/wiki/Sony_HB-F1XV
Is that a good option ?
The HB-F1XV is the final MSX manufactured and marketed by Sony. It was aimed at the Japanese market.
that's an MSX2+
that would requre a new VDP and probably a switch for 3.58/7mhz
oh nevermind this one only could be 7mhz with a hardware mod
the panasonic fs-a1wsx would be nice too (has 7mhz boost)
@craggy iris just a heads up - computer models mostly had a switch to disable the internal software
the nms8220 didn't and you had to hold ESC to bypass it (or just remove the ROM)
This should be solved via the OSD menu. As soon as I come across it somewhere I will add it as an option to the XML definition. This will solve the HW switch and the state remembering.
I have a feeling this model has a Toshiba FDC controller. I don't have it available at the moment.
Don't you just love the MSX 'standard' 😉
standards are great - we have so many to chose from 😄
If you want star msx2+ implementation and don´t have Toshiba FDC controller the Sony HB-F1XV or Sony HB-F1XDJ are a good for start!lack 7mhz z80 but is a good model of msx2+
testing the new cores, all seens work very well!excelente work!very thanks!
Yup / I am also very happy with the implementation as well
if someone have the time to test the intro of Dragon Slayer the Legend of Heroes ? The text of the intro is really slow to be displayed and the music finished before the end of the intro. I have the same behavior on PSG mode or FM PAC mode.
I have the same behaviour here. Strangely the text speeds up once the music is finished.
@craggy iris Hydlide 3 - The Space Memories
sram save is not working.
What is the maximally useful for most gamers' purposes MSX model that is supported?
That is the Sony's final MSX2+ computer and I believe it's good choice.
true MSX2+ have 7mhz functionality
Thank you for your test I will opened an issue.
which version of Hydlide 3 are you using I will try it also on my side ?
Version and mapper
yes also the mapper is important
Xanadu (MSX2 floppy version) asked for a drive B.
I need to check the manual if it is normal 🙂
Use CTRL when booting?
I will check after work 🙂

Is it a fan translation or a retail version ? What is the issue you have ? The save file is not created or the sram is not loaded ?
It's fan translation version. The save file is not created.
On retail version, is the save created ?
The same is true. Maybe it‘s because I don’t know how to save, but I know that after sleeping in an inn in the game, it‘s automatically saved in sram.
Who knows how to save SRAM in the new MSX core? I look forward to hearing from those who have successfully saved in HYDLIDE 3.
in the OSD you have Save SRAM option if you choose a mapper who permit to save on SRAM
also it is important to set the amount of SRAM in some cases it is better to set the amount like War of the dead game
I will check after work for Hydlide 3 if I managed something
https://romdb.vampier.net/index.php?show=463 (the mapper is the same as the goodmsx version)
When you choose mappe ASCII8 you need to set SRAM Size to something different to auto to have SRAM Save on the OSD
i choose 8Kb for the size I go to the inn and save sram on the osd
the save was created but after restart the core and the game the character is not on this list
I will check the manual to see if it is really on the Inn to make the save and check if I can find 8kB is the good amount of SRAM
I checked the manual it can save with FMPAC but I don't understand how to do it on the core sorry
SD Snatcher you need to use a user disk to save
You could create disk and format it on MS DOS of the MSX
I can share mine if needed
Thanks found how to save ingame press f3 and insert user disk, thanks for the hint.. Msx noob here..
it is a computer the manual game is important
WIth CTRL hold during the boot, it set only drive A !
Yup
Hey. Hey. New version. Need to create new MSX packages using createMSXpack. Who can properly test Sony_HB-F1XV ? There are new parts that have not been in the core yet.
MSX Diag show this 🙂
Burai and Twinkle Star start to show kanji before it was blank rectangle
and MSX MUSIC works without FM Pac 🙂
F1 Spirit 3D Special (i presume because it is still the VDP of MSX2)
Do you guys know where to find '800han.rom', v20gbios.rom, v20sbios.rom, v20fbios.rom and cps-400s_hangul1.rom?
They seem to be missing from file-hunter and from any results in google, as if the files didn't exist anywhere, have these been dumped?
v20xbios.rom could be found on Mame
FMPAC has the ability to store SRAM only on a modified main MiSTer. The only thing that can be saved now is SRAM bound to a loaded ROM and a mapper that supports SRAM. The automatic SRAM size selection does not work. Again there is no way to detect it without external support. On FMPAC the SRAM content can be saved to disk
Thank you I will try it.
So after go to inn on Hydlide 3 with FMPAC set in slotA I can reset & detach rom cartrige It keeps information on SRAM of the FM PAC and I just need to save PAC to disk ?
That's a good question. Actually, off the top of my head, I don't know. Rebooting itself leaves all the memory in place, but releasing the ROM maybe causes a reload of everything.
we need to detach rom cartrige to access FM PAC menu I will test it and give you the result
it works 🙂
Thank you Molekula for the hint
@stray reef so to save in Hydlide 3
You need to set FM PAC on slot A
Mount A blank disk
Load the rom Hydle 3 go to the inn
Reset & detach rom cartridge
in basic type "Call fmpac"
go to copy
PAC -> DISK
Set a name for the file
reboot your mister
to load the save
You need to set FM PAC on slot A
Mount A disk with the save done previously
call fm pac
go to copy
DISK -> PAC
Select the file name you used to save
load the rom hydlide 3 and normally you will have your character name on game start
Thank you But it‘s too complicated.
I want to find a convenient way.
Do you have plans to support sram saves on FM pac in other slots while running game rom?
As I wrote above. The main MiSTer must be modified. I have a version that handles two FM-PACs in two slots and can store SRAM for each slot separately. The current version only stores the SRAM associated with a specific ROM.
@karmic rover Can you please tell me how do you succesfully load Snatcher HDD-installed with correct sound? So far, I set SLOT A to "MegaFlasROM SCC+ SD", SLOT B "empty", then I load my VHD with Snatcher on it, then on MultiMente I navigate to unit B, then load the game.
The game loads but sound is broken: only a high-pitched audio can be heard 😦
I don't think it can work. When the ROM is released, the SRAM is initialized. Surely a dump of SRAM containing some user data will be stored on disk ?
I can share my disk to see the content ?
Do you mean you‘ll be modifying it on Mister main when the public version of the new core comes out later?
if (rom_eject) begin
ioctl_size[2] <= 0;
ioctl_size[3] <= 0;
load <= 1; <<<<<<< This moment reload all RAM content
end
My idea is that if the existing MSX project can be replaced, I will send a Merge request to modify main. This is because modifications in main are tied to the computer name.
I didn't tried HDD installed of Snatcher with Megaflashrom SCC+.
But the english version also existed on floppy and can be launch without installed it on HDD
In this case I used Slot SCC+ with those floppies and run the game and I have SCC+ sound.
To be able to have 0- Run Game in the screenshot below the Main Ram needs to be above 128KB (256KB)
Do you have a link somewhere to a vhd containing everything needed to run OCM MSX ? I just need the minimalist version without added games and commercial SW. Thanks
Ah, ok. How can Main Ram be set to 256KB?
I don't see any RAM options. What MSX model did you use?
I'll try to work around it. Do a reset, but don't allow the ROM to boot.
We have this tool on MSX Core.
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX_MiSTer/blob/master/README.md#notes-about-sd-card
you can create a VHD and juste launch the script to populate the vhd mounted
sent a PM
the OCM vhd contains the bios files etc.
I had a clean vhd that I tried to upload to an 'org' achive but it was rejected
not sure why
thank you !
main ram 512kb possible?
I don't know with the current core
turbo-R gt is 512kb. I hope it‘s possible in the new msx core.
With the new model Sony_HB-F1XV and the last release, we are stuck at this screen with MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD.
It works for other models with last release
and also SD snatcher dsk wont boot on new core, play fine on old core
what is the behavior you have ? Is it black screen ?
The model Sony_HB-F1XV have only 64KB of main ram so it is not enough to play SD Snatcher
yes black screen
if you try with Philips_NMS_8250.MSX normally it will work with the last core
yes i use that model on older core.. so ill stick to that model..
I desperately hope that Panasonic WSX will also be added to the machine xml of the new core.
For SPC-800, you can find it on http://bluemsx.msxblue.com/resource.html
CPC-400S rom is also there.
The 800han.rom file there is not the one needed by CreateMSXpack:
Not found ROM 0 SHA1:1', '800han.rom', '1e7616261a203580c1044205ad8766d104f1d874'
You mean sha1sum is incorrect?
That's what python3 createMSXpack.py says, yes
The same problem is present for the Canon V20 BIOS:
Not found ROM 0 SHA1:1', 'v20gbios.rom', 'd67be6d7d56
Not found ROM 0 SHA1:1', 'v20sbios.rom', '9fb289ea5c1

Okay, actually I created XML using physically dumped SPC-800 rom. I'll check what is difference between two roms.
scroll up, someone share it.. my bad, its fc800han.rom
Corrected. Will be in the next build. It's already in Git.
I also modified the behavior for unload ROM
Thanks for those quick fixes. I will test it tomorrow!
@craggy iris I confimed internal OPLL working. For my test, I made the machine like fs-a1f+opll+wd fdc. 😊
I found the difference between my 800han.rom and bluemsx's 800han.rom. My 800han.rom has 8kb padding. I'll update SPC-800.XML to use bluemsx's 800han.rom.
I would use the openMSX roms as a base
we've put a massive amount of time and effort into them that they are a 1:1 true dump
including all variations
@fallen summit I see. When I create machine's XML, first I'll use openMSX's rom dump.
let me message you the link with the official system roms
Please... Thank you
I need to update one for canon !
If the XML definition says that the ROM should be 2 blocks (16kB) in size and a smaller ROM is found, it is automatically aligned to the desired size. It is filled with the value 0xFF
Yes, you alrealdy told me. But I forgot to change that one, SPC-800.
FC-80 adn 80U was changed to original 8kb rom.
HI.
New release 20230621
Enhancements: Unload ROM without reload RAM
Enhancements: Update Video proccesor from OCM v3.9.2 [ALPHA9]
Compatibility: Modify SPC-800 machine config
BUG: Repair of halnote mapper. Combine SONY HB-HB-F1xv + MegaflashROM remained stuck during startup.
BUG: Incorrect sending of ROM size for the device.
BUG: Enable CAS playback only after CAS is loaded. Isue #18
Issue #18 should be reopen, Snatcher is missing most of the instruments in the soundtrack, this is how the intro should sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNdTjeG0Hcw
In fact, it sounds like that when the game is run from floppies.
Thank you. However, there was an error in cpc-400s bios. I looked for cps-400s_kanji.rom but all the files I got get the same error. Don‘t you have a solution?
@stray reef pm me ill send it
Thank you. 👍
Thanks @kind robin 🙂
the only way I can see a VHD (when I use my existing ones) is to 'call fdisk' in basic - delete partition - make partition
then when I try to copy over the disk image from the MFR to b: the screenshot above happens
If I compare the behavior on MiSTer and OpenMSX the sound is the same. Same extension and same computer model. Whereas your comparison is against a different combination of HW. Is the problem in the emulation or in the game ? I don't know.
How big an image are you using ? I'm testing on a relatively small disk (8M)
I've only tried the one I have for the other MSX core and I get the same error as you. I've tried making a new VHD but I don't know much about MSX so got a bit stuck...
I'm not sure about the compatibility between VHD for MSX (ocm) and VHD for MegaFlashROM. My findings are that VHD for MSX(ocm) can be mounted in Windows as a virtual disk, but I have a problem in Linux. With VHD for MegaFlashROM I have it exactly the opposite. That's why I've asked here for an already created minimalist VHD for MSX(ocm). I failed to create a VHD for MSX(OCM) according to the documentation and put it off for sometime.
Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
Thank you for explaining
8mb as well
My workflow
dd if=/dev/zero ibs=1M count=8 | tr "\000" "\377" > 8m.vhd
Mount VHD via OSD (8m.vhd)
set extension MFRSD
reset
exit mm
run basic
call fdisk
Key: 1, 2, 1, F, y
wait format and reset
select all files (space)
Copy b:
alternative:
reboot and hold key UP
F3 and Y (erase)
reboot.
Now disk A is my 8m.vhd
Taken from your video 😄
Or run openMSX with MFRSD extension. Do these steps and then take the disk image from the disk and rename it to VHD (c:\Users\tomas\OneDrive\Documents\openMSX\persistent\MegaFlashROM_SCC+_SD\untitled1\SDcard1.sdc)
does it now auto defaults to one drive
christ ... glad I moved away from Microsucks
@craggy iris will you implement MSX-JE in the Sony HB-F1V? If this is not focus this time, I'll not test Kanji input.
I didn't test the last release but the wordprocessor dsk packaged with Hb f1v said msx-je is not present on the previous release. It could be a good test.
Is it possible to use the right keypad? I feel very uncomfortable when I play koei simulation game. Is it possible to map the right keypad?
Same symptom here.
Please what specific software can I test with. MSX-JE should work, but I added it in blindly just based on "how it should behave".
On bluemsx resource page, there is hb-f1v utility disk (it's 4 disks set). You need to boot hb-f1v with disk#3. It should run wordprocessor with MSX-JE but stucks when reading disk.
HB-F1XV
Thank you. Thank you. I'll test it when I get home.
This tool "MegaReport" is quite useful. When I run HB-F1XV on openMSX, it shows "MSX-KANJI : FOUND" and "MSX-JIS : FOUND"
But on MSX FPGA core, it shows like below.
With slotchecker tool, it shows the same slot map
Same result on both openMSX and MSX1 core
looking how to automate making a disk image on debian without using openMSX to create a partition and format to fat16
you would think it's easy
well apperently it's not
I have to thank the good soul that created the Pack, Mister MSX BIOS in the blessed archive, and the core keeps getting better thanks for the great work @craggy iris
I'll probably will included it in my webpage
I just need someone to sent me the latest and greatest
It will help a lot, but I think it's better to put it when you already have all the msx versions that will be supported
@stuck valve it is for msx2 and up
Does somebody know what configuration would allow Snatcher to work with correct sound on this core using the english HDD install?
I have already tried many MSX2 models, all with MegaFlashROM SCC+ in SLOT A, and sound seems to be broken in all of them.
I even opened an issue for this:
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/issues/18
But it seems Snatcher HDD also has wrong sound with MegaFlashROM SCC+ in OpenMSX, which could be caused by the emulator, or the game, etc.
Any ideas?
Ah, could be this!

New release 20230623
Improvements: Add SRAM halnote mapper
Bug: halnote mapper
Bug: Kanji driver fix
Need to recreate MSX PACK. Specially SONY-HB-F1XV
The MSX-JE is now operational. But after uploading the wordprocessor, there is a problem with VDP. Probably a problem with image synchronization.
Great progress! Would it be worth adding your MSX core to unstable nightlies now so new version are automatically built and can be grabbed?
Thank you for the quick implementation!!
I tested the kanji input shortly.
It works well
Also Sony HB-F1XV's word processor works. I think the problem is not on vdp side. There is an issue on intelaced output thru HDMI. intelaced output thru CRT is fine.
Does not move from the Daewoo X-II cpc-400s Bios to the Basic screen. Please check.
It's the known issue because of non-supported FDC controller. It will not fix soon.
Perhaps poorly worded. It's a problem between VDP and the framework in charge of HDMI
@craggy iris you can easily swith to interlaced mode using basic command on MSX2
screen 0,0,1,1,0,1
Last(6th digit) 1 means interlaced.
does megareport exist in a rom file ? or can someone make a bootable floppy from it please thanks in advance
You can find the disk version on file-hunter.com.
It’s even easier with the vdp(10) registers
I was wondering if the Syntax Infinity demo on the OCM was displaying the same behavior:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fd5ic5ynAWg
@2:24 the Twisting Bar - t
@stuck valve unknown reality runs on the core but some screens are just really messed up - due to the interleave screen mode
The title screen of this game have also the same behaviour
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/issues/15
@karmic rover can you PM me the pack you have?
I want the game rom load menu and game disk mount menu to be at the top of the OSD in the new msx core and that would save a lot of time. In fact, the BIOS and FW load don‘t use very well. What do you guys think?
The Bluemsx(or Openmsx) emulator automatically recognizes the rom mapper. Ocm or new msx core needs to be specified individually, so what principle does Bluemsx(or Openmsx) automatically recognize the mapper? Wouldn‘t it be possible to apply this in the new msx core if we know the principle?
@stray reef https://romdb.vampier.net/index.php?show=643
this is what is in essence the base or openMSX and the blueMSX rom database
there are plans for rom headers
but i haven't gotten around making those
The rom header operation was included in bluemsx(openmsx). Then it was a problem that would be solved if this work was put into the new msx core. Does it take a lot of time?
Not really - just a lot of planning
I will send you tomorrow I think !
thanks
How should I name the VHD file so it's loaded automatically when I have "MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD" on SLOT A?
I thought it should be called /media/fat/games/MSX1/boot.vhd but that doesn't work at all.
Do you know how to use the MSX koei num keypad? It was available on bluemsx, but the new msx core doesn't recognize the keypad.
the video issues on Wordcompressor, unknown reality on HDMI do you think they could be link to video settings not working like Video Mode NTSC/PAL
How unload rom is working on the core ?
I'm not able to use save on floppy read by the FMPAC for the game Hydlide 3.
With the MSX2+ (MSXPack) the double PSG and OPLL are usable with the ROM Zanac EX enhanced version loaded on the OSD 😁
if it's based on an MSX without numeric keys then I don't know - I don't know how to map to the core
With the Sony HB-F1XV (still using VDP of MSX2) having OPLL builtin so no need FMPAC just Megaflash Rom on slot A and load the rom on slot B
ok
As far as I remember, the OCM msx core also works with the right numeric keypad. I hope this issue will be done in the new msx core.
It's not a rarity, but the interleaved mode used. I already have an edit that at least on HDMI will display the image and not break the sync. But there is noticeable flickering of the image. (There are two frames alternating). But I don't know what it will do on a CRT where it works properly. I have no way to test this. I am now working on optimizing the VDP connection to the framework.
If everything works as it should, then after reset and detach ROM only reset and remove access to RAM for slots A and B. So the ROM should no longer boot
Yes the rom doesn't boot but I'm not able to load SRAM contents stored in dsk on fmpac for the game hydlide 3. I will try again.
Don't even try. It won't work. The SRAM contents will be erased when the ROM is loaded. I'll have to redo that.
ok !
How should I name the VHD so it's auto-loaded by the core, please?
No such thing is implemented. In the next build I will enable saving the last selected VHD. Then it will be loaded automatically until the VHD is removed.
buggy but nice
Tech demo
Hi, I have posted a version for video testing. https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/raw/MSX2test/releases/MSX1_videoTest.rbf Please someone who has the ability to test the behavior on a CRT. Especially the behavior with and without border. Available in the video settings menu. Separately for MSX1 and MSX2 (they are different VDPs). Also https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/issues/15 should solve the problem, but I don't know if the HDMI modification broke the output on the CRT. Thanks in advance for the feedback.
I will test the hdmi tonight !
it's better but not all screen are correct on hdmi
Los Amores de Brunilda first screen is good now
text looks a bit strange on the new video test core (same on CRT)
256 instead of 512
we're going to work on the release of the new openMSX soon
so I'll be busy with that
confirme same issue on HDMI
PAL/NTSC and the border work again
Unknown Reality is better
The wordprocessor with video test version (border set to yes)
Broken also in CRT
looks cooul though
Thanks to everyone who participated in the data collection of #MSX VRAM access speeds via #VATT.
I've put all this in a database for easier analysis:

That's not good news. Thanks
The reason for this bad display is already known and the fix is simple.
Good to know, thanks 🙂
New test release 20230702
Add OSD option border y/n
Use framework component - video_mixer
Please test on CRT. Including interlaced video
On HDMI 🙂
Is someone managed to run Rune Master II by Compile on floppy ?
I have just black screen. I have tested different dsk files
This text looks correct on CRT now too. In black and white for me because I use S-video, though
If DSK runs on openMSX and not on MiSTer I can run a simulation in Verilator and find where the behavior differs. However, I need to know the SHA1 for DSK and the chosen MSX model in openMSX where it works.
Model Sony HB-F1XV
sha1sum Rune\ Master\ II\ (1990)(Compile)(ja).dsk
ca1c181d5a004adacf008c738f97cd38778f42a6 Rune Master II (1990)(Compile)(ja).dsk
It is running on OpenMSX 17.0 see the screenshot
I tried also on different other models in the core. It is black screen
I can opened an issue also on github if needed
On OpenMSX at this screen we need to strike space key to go to the next screen to choose the name player
I tried on the core to strike the space key on black screen and time to time I can go in game
On CRT, it look fine.
On HDMI, upper part of screen seems clear. But lower part of screen is blurry.
The bottom of the hdmi is visible on crt ?
Not the bottom, i mean the lower part of screen
Looks fine on CRT
You can see "vcv" string is not clear. But "sdds" and "ssas" string looks clear.
Ok I see thanks 👍
What is the HDMI resolution ? I don't notice anything like that on my LCD panel. Do you have the native resolution of the LCD panel set in MiSTer.ini ? Interlaced mode on CRT doubles the lines, but on HDMI it alternates even and odd pages. No line doubling
It's 1920x1080
I'm not sure but it can be LCD problem. I'll test with other LCDs tomorrow. Which resolution was on your test?
1024 x 600/60 and 1366 x 768/60
@craggy iris this issue is visible only with border on. Without border, there is no visual artifact.
I tested 3 monitors with same symptoms. Two 1920x1080/60 monitors and 1280x1024/60 monitor.
When I switch the output resolution to 1024x600, I could also see the issue with border on.
syntax infinity is seriously broken
anyone else have this?
eh
@karmic rover did the pack change?
I don't that this behaviour for the second video
Normally no changes in pack since some updates
I have to tried the first one to see
Molekula changes the OSD
maybe you could remove your cfg file to see if it is better
@craggy iris I attached the video for easy understanding.
CRT is fine with or without border.

metal gear with SCC addition was released
😮
I think it was already exist but great new stuff
Japanese or English as well?
There is some video some years ago of SCC version by fony. Is it the same version ?
oh yeah it was from 2022
just PSG>SCC translation
nothing really special
but it sounds a bit nicer
Sounds pretty cool
done
Original artwork of what?
Seriously …. Metal gear 2
Metal Gear 2 "demo" has awesome music
mecha assault 3
instead of remaking snake eater they should use the opportunity to remake 1 and 2
the OLD ones
Isn't MGS1 already a remake of 2?
not if you know your LORE

We need a multiverse gear solid where Snake from prime universe teams up with Snake from Snake’s revenge to take down the snakes from Snake Rattle ‘n Roll
Only to be DDTd by Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts?
@fallen summit if I’m understanding correctly, Bill Gates likes the MSX. Therefor we can conclude that people who bought MSX were indirectly responsible for fueling Microsoft’s rise. So then I can also conclude that because you’re such a big MSX fan, you’re likely the person to blame for Internet Explorer.
Could be worse. Could be clippy.
Billy Gates later denied all knowledge about it
as Nishi pissed him off
Exactly 30 years ago an 18 meter tall, 30 meter long dinosaur appeared in Shinjuku, Tokyo in an event that celebrated 1 million MSX computers sold. Created by the same company that made the models for cult classic Godzilla, the dinosaur was the attention grabber of MSX Dinosaur Land which took place between December 1st, 1985 and January 16th, 1...
Proof of concept for a graphic OS for MSX 1, inspired by Windows 3.11 / 9x. It runs on any MSX machine with only 16kb of RAM.
The goal here is showing how it is possible for a 1983 8-bit home computer to have the user experience of an early 90's PC with Windows (even faster, as here there is not swapping file). The idea is to be frame-fast on a...
@river raft here is where the action is 😉
has the MSX1 core on main been updated since last year?
Computer MSX1. Contribute to MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer development by creating an account on GitHub.
No
yeah but a beta version is present on msx2test branch
Hi. I'm new to this community.
@craggy iris looks like someone finally decapped an SCC chip
Raki... that's a familiar name. Hopefully, this will bring a hardware model of the SCC which produces the same inconsistent output as the actual chip.
@paper kindle there is also an SCC+ but I assume it’s mostly the same
Think that one no longer shares the same waveform between channels 4 and 5.
So will there ever be a Nabu core?
Out of scope for MSX
Keyboard handeling is much different to start with
And needs network capabilities
One person saying he is working on nabu core some months ago.
needs mouse support, it won't work with the controller as SymbOS does. Otherwise, for what it is seems to work fine 🙂
Yes the mouse will permits to play some adventure games also !
@paper kindle https://www.msx.org/forum/msx-talk/general-discussion/the-meaning-of-the-scc-test-bits
A few people seem to be interested in the SCC test bits, so I thought I'd leave the info out there.
working on a proposal for a 'beginner' interface for openMSX
Basic Functionality for openMSX
The following should be there at all times:
Menu 1 - Loan Media
- Slot 1 - Cartridge
- Slot 2 - Cartridge
The following items depends on the MSX system:
- Disk A
- Disk B
- Casette
- HDD
- LaserDisc
Menu 2 - Configuration
- Video Configuration (Mirror Catapult)
- Audio Configuration (Mirror Catapult)
- Advanced (allows you to Switch to advanced mode - what we currently have)
Menu 3 - About
- openMSX version and misc information about the version
- openMSX homepage link
- GitHub
@fallen summit You should really port OpenMSX to libretro. Smooth video and shaders are a must for MSX and libretro provides both.
The open part in openMSX really is a thing 😉
also I'm only doing support for openMSX these days (discord server/romdb/youtube)
next to keeping everyone happy with a new stream of roms ever year, I'm pretty busy
kenny's videos are great
Hello everybody, i've tried some times to do something with https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/MSX1_MiSTer/blob/MSX2test/releases/CreateMSXpack.zip
for having a MSX1 VG8020 with FDD and a MSX2 8250 with no success, because i didn't understood how it works. (i am using Python via CMD).
So i pray for some angel that could help me with an already working configuration for lastest beta MSX1/2 core 😦
Thank you very much in advance for your help
@random citrus https://vampier.net/MSX/
Biospack.zip not found, i am sorry 😦
At this sentence in the website
You can also look up the mapper types for the ROM you try to start here
yes but it is linked to MSXPack when I tried it
oh
Guys please a little help, i've received MSX.ZIP file and unzipped it into \games\msx1 folder
No msx1 folder present in root of microsd card but when launch core (2 july 2023) get always black screen
F12 doesn't works (don't open OSD menù)
What should i do now?
I had to remove the settings file for the MSX1 core to get it to work
Video encoder demo made for Vammala Party 2023 (Played back using MSX tR + GR8NET)
new MSX demo 😄
Will try to do it asap
Thanks

lol
In our region the MSX was called the equivalent of "Stone" 😆
What kind if state is the new msx core in? Is it a viable alternative to the 1chip core yet?
it's better for some games than the 1chip core in terms of speed/accuracy from what i could tell, overall the compatibility isn't as broad across a lot of different models though.
i'm not an expert on msx, but some games obviously had bugs on the 1chip that weren't going to go away
Yes it’s viable - @craggy iris seems to be busy so progress happens when progress happens
Which games?
Newly found undumped game - just finised it
It's called "Transportation Near Miss"
Hello, finally i removed all MSX config files from "config" folder into root of MicroSD but this core still freeze and don't permit to do anything, OSD included
who made your DDR3 memory module?
@craggy iris https://twitter.com/RCAVictorCo/status/1691069117808476160 😄
I've took my Mister FPGA some years ago from ManuFehri, i don't know about DDR3 module details
I don't know why it doesn't work
If you rename config directory just for the test ?
to be sure to use a stock configuration
post to keep this active 😄

need to play Castle Excellent. @fallen summit do you recommend any version to play in the new core? saves are welcome..
i mean, does molekula's core support saves on tape?
i thought i saw some rom hacks to save on disks
Dunno - never liked the game
The only thing I loved was pushing graph and code at the same time 🙂
Really?
Took me a while to discover I could use graph to speed up the game even more
Good times 😇
guess i will play it on OpenMSX
this version supports save on disk: Special version by Ramones 2015
924EFAF45F7ADF25D1D7D89847A3EBE648FA7FC2
I tried playing the game - but it was too frustrating
i have good memories of playing The Castle Excellent for hours
it was frustrating to play the same part over and over
i didn't have a tape recorder
not sure it would even work. in Brazil we got those "disk" versions
hacked to display the name of a local pirate store
@fallen summit you got an idiots guide to using the core?
All I get is artwork when trying to run stuff
Thanks for anything or nothing..just knowing you thought of me for half a second is worth it
Check the second pinned message
Thanks
Looking and testing..im about to give up and use an emulstor......lol
My guess right now is the default bios boot rom is the issue....
Ah well..I shall keep testing later
Hello everybody, just wish to tell you that finally i've solved question of not working core MSX1/2 dated 02 july 2023..
Simply i need to load previous core dated 23 June 2023 that is working, load a MSX1 or MSX2 systems, saving configuration and after this, finally lastest core will works!
I've did it on both 2 Misters that i own and it has worked in that way on both ones!
Do ...ummmm... do You make yt videos? Lol
@muted sorrel
I'm going to run through your og video to see if I can get rhe msx core working
But there is the new msx1 core now .....which supposedly you don't have to build or find a VHD, but I have not gotten anything to work...I hear music and that's it
But I'll still try the old school vhd method to test your old vid
Wait..... wait....... im so damn confused now...lol
The msx1 core only plays msx2 games.... or there is a new core called msx2 I need to find thst isn't part of the update all?
Molekula's MSX1 core is also now MSX2 capable. This is not part of update_all script, as the core is not finished. So, if you want to test it, use Vampier's FAQ pinned. Basically, get the latest RBF, put it in some location (I put them in Unstable for example). Then get the MSX bios files and put them in /games/MSX1 folder. ROMs/DSKs/CAS/VHD games/files also go in the same folder.
No, i don't do YT videos 😄
Lastest MSX cores permit at user to select which system to use, there are many MSX1 and many MSX2 models avaiable
Strangly reminds me of Adventure Construction Set.
Although the new msx1 core has not been completed yet, I hope that the new msx1 core will be developed in analogue pocket open fpga. Since amiga pc core has also been developed for open fpga, I think msx core is also possible.
We get it..... you own a pocket
.....so do i... lol and I'd love to play metal gear in bed since second kid is on the way and the luxury of playing my mister is even further away
Sorry for the comment to make me seem like an ass...it gets attention tho lol
I'm on vacation, and I've got more responsibilities piling up. I'll get to the core again soon.
Hi @craggy iris - ok 🙂 enjoy your vacation
was just getting worried about you as a person
the core can wait
priorty is real life that pays the bills
About lastest MSX1/2 cores, i think that 2 july 2023 core has an issue because IMHO it's not correct that it's necessary to run and save configuration on 23 June 2023 core before run lastest 2 July 2023 release with success
@craggy iris @fallen summit
It's not urgent, just a thought that i am sharing with you all
Bit confused on how to set the current core up - I keep getting a black screen and need to reboot MiSTer upon launching the core
I added boot.rom as instructed, IDK what's with the bios-pack thing though
See Vampier's FAQ in the pinned messages. Also do scroll up, plenty info in a lot from other users as well
I followed the FAQ but it's bit unclear with what to do with the biospack (like, is it same as making a VHD?)
Can't find this thing from the FAQ page for example
#1056033525922537542 message
that was from older versions and tests 🙂
now.. you have that biospack zip from Vampier. Extract it on media\fat\games\MSX1 folder
then the usual F12, load ROM Pack *.MSX to whatever system you wanna play with
#1056033525922537542 message
maybe Reset settings from the next OSD page would help, if you used before the core/official one
Try 20230623 version, with last version i have black screen as well
Yeah, now it works
I'm guessing something's off with latest build?
On that end, can't seem to make other BIOS-files than C-Bios work
Here a sony HB-F1 is working
Tried that but just gives me black screen - can't launch games with it
Using Vampier's biospack - did I miss any steps
Wait, you have load BIOS-file as "rom pack"? Kinda confusing
You need load .MSX from OSD menu
I assumed you have to load BIOS-file as through the "FW Pack"-option
Nops..i don't use this option for the moment
演奏的には地味に難しいタイプの曲で、サビの音飛び&リズムで苦戦しました^^;
名曲揃いのSPACE MANBOWですが、その中でも1,2位を争う人気曲ではないでしょうか。
楽しんで頂けたら幸いです♪
Woh, furrtek is decapping R800!
2nd Unix-like OS working 🙂 Fuzix (https://github.com/EtchedPixels/FUZIX)
with several text-based games as well :D)))
Speaking of MSX and Operating systems, this is my list of findings (mind you that the OS definition might vary, some are just GUIs on top of MSX-DOS, but better than a file manager like MM and such. And yes, Basic is oh well... BASIC :)):
Short list of MSX supported OSes:
- MSX Basic - default programming language etc
- MSX-DOS (multiple versions)
- SymbOS - SYmbiosis Multitasking Based Operating System
- CP/M
- Uzix - a branch of what back in the 1980s Doug Braun wrote (a Unix-like OS for the Z80 called UZI)
- FuzixOS - an even newer branch of UZI, still active as it seems
Untested yet or much on any of the cores (TO DO list): - Win2k
- MNBIOS for Philips NMS-82xx computers
- Multi-Z
- HAL Halnote
tested those at least against one of the MSX cores (OCM and Molekula's) with a preference for MSX2
if anyone knows/tested some other, lemme know 🙂 again, my criteria is to be smth more than file managers running on top of MSX-DOS
that FS-A1 is embarassed to be associated with it
@fallen summit
I don't think I've seen that add-on
MSX has so many odds and ends
Reminds me of this SGX add-on that never happened
Do we have SNAC support on any of the MSX cores?
fs-a1 is a compact nice MSX2
I have an FS-A1FX here
A1 was my first MSX
I played Akumajo Dracula on it quite a bit on that tiny jellybean gamepad
I still have one super clean A1WX
Sadly I may sell it soon with some nice additional items
MFR SCC+
Snatcher Sound cart
Egg mouse
modded Genesis controller
Thats a nice looking MSX
Not my personal one, but it's also super clean with the sticker near the spacebar
Yeah that one is hot, I sold one in like-new condition in the box
Ren-Sha ~
This was mine before I sold it
Then the buyer contacted me like "Uhh how do I use this"
Alas
It was so clean
Who buys an MSX without at least some knowledge of what it is and how to use it
Monied people on Ebay
You plug it into the wall. You plug in the cartridge or disk. You turn on the power switch

But Japanese makes things so ALIEN to noobs
My MSX modded NES controller went to Vampier recently
Shit, I wish I still had the Turbo R
But I just don't like sitting on a pile of VG stuff that is slowly degrading as I don't use it
I did get to briefly play some games that support MT-32 using the real unit
Had to mix everything together with a little audio mixer
Illusion City sounded hot
Thats cool.. I wonder if either of the MSX cores on MiSTer support that
It's a small assortment of titles that support it
Very small
Thats fair. I mainly setup my MT32pi for X68000 core, but Id like to have it work with MSX cores as well
Plus I had been reading about how people mod the audio in the Turbo Rs to "correct" it
And I wasn't about to do that
So I figured the A1WX would be a good reference MSX to keep
I miss some of my real hardware sometimes. I think in the case of MSX Im mostly satisfied with the 1 Chip core, but the new one being able to load files in will be a better thing whenever its done being developed
Oh cool, Famicle Parodic II. Vampier told me about the original, its cool
IIRC the Turbo R lets you use the MFR cart to the full potential
And some hacks take advantage of the R800 CPU?
But I'm no MSX dev and would not use it
If I had a big house with space to display everything, I'd still stress over all the dust that accumulates on consoles
And all the cables needed to attach it all
My house is 1500 square feet, I had a nice little game room but I dont miss the repairs on arcade pcbs, worrying about chips dying in hard to open famicom shells, peeling labels, etc
I sold it all in 2018 for the most part
Yeah I'm still in the process of selling
Getting closer to having my core collection in place
Never got into arcade PCBs or pinball, thank fuck
Though repairing PCBs does seem intriguing now that I have tools
I really hated replacing that Konami sound module for Xexex
It just sucked, it was before the replacement modules were available from the cottage industry
Its better, now
I was also kind of pissed off, Xexex cost $500 and the module failed within a month of it arriving
yeah just fuck that shit lol
Seems typical for Konami's wacky arcade HW
I'm hoping we get GI Joe and whatnot
That game is so over the top
GI Joe is great! The awesome spiritual sequel to Devastators
ALIENS is better than I remembered
Been playing the JP version and comparing
They added lots of Cabal-style levels for the USA
Yeah its allright!
The Simpsons is kind of uhhhh OK
Better than the first TMNT arcade, at least
That's so repetitive it makes me die inside
Haha yeah.. I had pcbs of those, so I had played them more recently before the cores came out. I kinda knew what I was getting into. I think a lot of people had rose colored glasses on from childhood cab sessions
They're fine but Konami beat em ups arent the most complex in the gameplay department for the most part
Well a big factor was having four players on the cabs back then
It seemed like a jamboree
I played through Asterix with someone on Fightcade recently and that game is an absolute slog, I didnt like it much
But when you play alone... well
That's too bad about Asterix
Used to love those comics
I'll still play that and Bucky when they happen
You might like it, I dunno. It just got super repetitive like you mentioned
I've tried them all via emulation, at least a little
You know me though, I never shut up about Denjin Makai 2 lol
Yeah lots of people like that one
But anyway, I wish I had a full set of Konami on MSX
I gotta get back to speedrunning Cabbage Patch Kids
That gets nail-biting
I had a pretty good amount of Konami for MSX, a few duds but not bad at all overall Id say.
