#ASCII - MSX
1 messages ยท Page 2 of 1
Meta data can contain information if it doesn't
We know from experience
Metal Gear JP doesn't work on EU MSX-es for example
loads of butthurt comments from ebay sellers are a result ๐
I would say between the the MSX power users and devs here you could spec up exactly what would all be needed for the ideal header format and presumably be quite easy to patch all the roms currently out there, then put this pack up on archive etc. Do it well enough and maybe the other communities will pick it up in the future.
one of the issues is historical precedent
msx is a platform that had concurrent rom dumps / 'piracy' with its lifespan ... it was a computer; people wanted to run roms
i mean i guess this is true for consoles too though
it just seems like it was pretty prevalent on msx compared
I will fight their MSX assault dual wielding Nintendo and Atari lightsabers like a badass sith
I can knock up a sheet later of all the roms as a starting point and we could assign mappers to each one, that should give a clear starting point of what is needed and how many potential mappers there are
but anyway
mister is our platform and we can do what we want
it would be nice if they were on board, but hardly required
Yeah, and because this is being done from the ground up and we don't have any baggage we can look at this with fresh eyes and go for the best user experience
either way though the first step in making anything work is a solid database of information that has at least some kind of crc/sha1/etc that can identify roms technically
@kind robin can we atleast agree to keep the extension different?
yes
like msx1/msx2 instead of rom
good ๐ I agree
Also a good understanding of what different mappers would be needed/useful
not three letter?
yeah .msx is fine too
the header can contain the system
msx and ms2 ๐
nah let's stick to msx .... ms2 triggers my ocd
i'm a big fan of RIFF style headers
I am assuming MSX1/MSX2/MSX2+/MSXR with there being mappers within each for different sound chip expansions etc.
they are super easy for both hardware and software and use extremely low resources and are adaptable
.memfr2 - MiSTer enhanced MSX format ROM 2
anyway vampier, just keep focusing on your exportable database and we can take it from there
@marble barn depending if @craggy iris is willing to implement OPL3/OPL4 ๐
or v9900 support
You could make a mapper for those anyway and if support comes support comes, and if not then it would still be read as something that works
what about disk images? those are out of scope for now ๐
Final Fantasy - auto hold CTRL on boot
The beauty here is if we are making a mapper classification from scratch then it can cover everything that could benefit from one, even if the core doesn't currently support it
Konami saw how well some of the British ports of their arcade games were received and sold, and they wanted some of that publishing money. They self-published a few arcade ports and they were all mediocre at best. Konami UK's Speccy port of Nemesis is abysmal, sadly.
yes - it was because the UK was really a bunch of bedroom programmers
where in JP it was more professional
Some of the ports were excellent on the 8-bits, Konami's were not.
the gradius port has the programmers name plastered all over the screen
it scrolls like a snail
sound effects are....WTF
Most arcade ports on the micros were pretty average, but the Konami ports were some of the better ones.
I mean look what they did to the JP version of nemesis with just a few adjustments
Only for MSX2 or higher.
Video saved with openMSX emulating a MSX Turbo R...
You can download IPS patch in my Github: https://github.com/bladeba/MSX
Nemesis on the C64 was okay. The Speccy version had abysmal collision detection
For Green Beret MSX, they were better off not releasing it. Same for Nemesis on the Speccy.
the helicopter battle or horrendous
Considering the hardware limitations, the Speccy port was really good.
A walkthrough of the ZX Spectrum game, Green Beret. From the recording originally sent to http://www.rzxarchive.co.uk/
#ZXSpectrum #RetroGaming #Walkthrough
No AY music, as it predated the 128 Speccy
despite the lack of hardware sprites that doesn't look half bad
Excellent programmer who really knew the hardware - Joffa Smith.
So I didn't realise that Vampier has a rather excellent online database of all the MSX software out there here:
ROMDB.vampier.net
And this evening I spent some time spinning records and making up a sheet documenting the various games and apps for the different hardware generations/models and their types based on the best pack I could find. I thought maybe it could be of use for testing or noting potential mappers. Anyhow was useful for me making it, and figured worth sharing. There are counters at the bottom right of each tab that give a breakdown of different software types and file formats that could be interesting to people wanting an overview at a glance. May be useful to someone for something.

isn't this one infamous for being one of the most difficult versions of Gradius?
@craggy iris In the msx2 core, YS2 game only works with the keyboard and the joypad controller does not work. Do you have a solution?
On the manual of YS2, it says the joypad needs to be connected to port 1 if the model supports two ports
@stray reef you ask the most curious questions that have nothing to do with the core at all
it only strengthens my resolve to make a FAQ really soon
`The MiSTer FPGA MSX 1/2 core
The MiSTer FPGA MSX currently in development by Molekula.
Why a new/2nd MSX core?
The current One Chip MSX Based core only supports the interaction with a VHD, this limits the interaction with the core to using programs like romload/diskload or SofaRun. Although this solutions is fine when you have advanced knowledge of the MSX platform it's not ideal for people who want to get the fullest out of the MSX core or just want to start a quick game from by loading a ROM or a disk image. Adding files to a VHD image can be tedious and moving the large VHD file back and forth from the current One Chip MSX core can be a tedious undertaking.
The orginal use for the One Chip MSX core:
- Support various single board FPGA computers
- Have pyshcial cart slots that support real MSX cart
- Use an SD card as a large storage medium (easy to add new files)
Despite a few bugs this version of the MSX worked perfectly for the die hard MSX fans, however it translated rather poorly to the MiSTer platform due to a lack of cart ports and the use of VHD files.`
there we go -hope I summed that up good enough for the justification
I wonder if we should get name.text to change the old core name to "MSX One Chip" that might make things a bit clearer for people
oh i meant to thumbs up the whole thing, but yeah haha
the way i think about it, the OCM-based MiSTer MSX core 'inherited' some things from the OCM that ended up being limitations because the hardware is different.
`What does the new MSX core support:
- Direct loading of Disk/CAS/ROM images (see below of instructions on ROM Loading)
- Switchable dedicated MSX1 or MSX2 mode
- ADC tape input support
- Joystick support
What doesn't the new MSX support (yet):
- MSX Audio/FM sound/OPL3/OPL4/OPLL
- SCC support outside ROMs (sorry SD Snatcher will sound like grinding gears for now)
- VHD/SD Card support
- Second disk drive support (hardly used by any software)
- MIDI (limited to a only a few MSX models)
- Mouse support`
@tame aurora somehow in the names.txt file it claims the OCM Core Supports turbo-r
that is so not true ๐
oof haha
supposedly that new msx0/3 stuff they're doing contains a turbo-r capable fpga board of some sort, but i'll believe it when i see it. the whole thing is so confusing right now
`Bios Files:
I used the following BIOS files for my personal setup which works just fine:
MSX1 main BIos File
- 829c00c3114f25b3dae5157c0a238b52a3ac37db boot.rom - MSX Main rom based on the the Philips vg8020
MSX 2 Bios Files
- 4ce41fcc1a603411ec4e99556409c442078f0ecf boot1.rom - MSX main rom - Sony HB-F1XD
- 0fbd45ef3dd7bb82d4c31f1947884f411f1ca344 boot2.rom - MSX2 Sub Rom - Sony HB-F1XD
- 24f3bea9f47a4d9f89be1ae1040facbfd0dba1bd boot3.rom - MSX2 Disk Rom - Philips VG-8240 Disk Basic`
I confirmed the joypad doesn't work on YS2
I think it maybe link to that
I will test your command
let me start ys2
the adventures of vampier & wark
@karmic rover if you use your stick do the numbers change?
Some games access the joystick port directly and set it up in a non-standard way. In MSX1 I have solved several such issues
yes number changed in second column
ok
good
that joystick reading is done by bios calls
so not sure how those guys are doing it
on the manual they said it needs to be plug on port1 so maybe other things are specific on this case
we could open an issue when the first version of the core will be released if the issue remains
i will keep it on my side ๐
@fallen summit LMK when the new core is to the point where the old one can be archived
having two around is undesireable
@kind robin this is for @craggy iris to decide
okay whomever ๐
I think the new core will get better ๐
it's already better in a lot of ways
it's the future
especially since it has an active maintainer and is written in a way that others can easily help with it
the source is being cleaned up a bit as far as I know
after that it will be released to the github
how is the feature parity currently
not sure what you mean with that question
oh being kept in sync - well - I let the OCM dev know about a VDP bug
it's just sitting there looking at his twitter he's more busy with the new MSX platform
@kind robin @fallen summit I basically don't care which core is in LMK. The current core has its place there and I don't insist on mine. I think the current kernel(MSX) provides options I may not even get to and it would be a shame to get rid of it. If someone joins the development eventually, it will only be a good thing. Let the community decide what it wants. I'm basically playing and you guys are enjoying it. ๐
Having two cores is generally bad for the community
it would be much better and less confusing to simply have one core that gets all future effort
considering the existing core has been practically unmaintained for years now, yours is the obvious better choice
I'll assist you in reaching feature parity however I can so we can deprecate the old one and move forward with yours
I'm here to test - but I won't be much help on the programming front for the core
here is what would make the core complete:
- MSX2+ support including MSX audio (which is basically FM support - this is in the OCM core)
- SCC(+) Support for konami disk games like Snatcher and SD Snatcher
- Optional big media (VHD) support like with the MegaFlashRom or Carnivore 2
Wishlist - RS232 or TCP/IP Stack support / Laserdisc / Digitizer / OPL4 (moonsound) / Full Turbo-R support / MIDI out / Full Panasonic FM-PAC support including SRAM saves
ROM detection through either a database or headers (WIP I think?)
@craggy iris about the mapper detection - we're thinking about adding a header to the ROMs which you can use
Please describe more. I am working on some form of mapper acquisition right now.
@craggy iris you know how NES/SNES have headers these days to identify the game and the mapper - well imagine some meta data attached to the ROM itself.
so at the end or start of the ROM we could have a 512byte header or something
this would eliminate the use of a database
Technically OK, but in terms of use I find it complicated. Wouldn't the solution be to add it to the name [mapperXY]?
I was meaning to do this yesterday, let me knock up a sheet quickly for features across both cores
@marble barn see above for my assesment

MT-3...
Can anyone who knows the old core better confirm the TBDs and proof this list?
Anything missing?
i think msx-audio and msx-music are being confused there
Should it be MSX Music?
msx-music is the YM2413 found in the MSX2+ computers (most of them)
also, in terms of midi and mt-32 ... i guess it's questionable because midi itself was only present in the turbo-R which isn't a part of either core, right?
Apparently it was in some MSX1 machines
if you mean the sfg-01/05 you're sorta right
i have one
it's kinda confusing but it's an addon cart, just a different sort, a more permanent one. and the MIDI was only in the sfg-05 (the earlier one used the DIN-5 plug but it wasn't for MIDI, confusingly)
Hmm, how would we note this on the sheet and do you know if the old core supports this?
it doesn't
also, the old core doesn't support SCC+?
i could have sworn it actually did; i guess i need to check
I thought it only supported SCC, but if someone can confirm that would be ace
i'd be really surprised as it's not much different and is backwards compatible
Temptations isnโt playable in OCM core. So, I dont agree it is perfect. ๐
@fallen summit does the old core support both SCC and SCC+ or just SCC?
i can't agree that it's perfect either; at some point the older MiSTer msx core started outputting very weird analog video for me and i couldn't really use it
it was also incompatible with a lot of things that worked on my actual 2+
Am I right in assuming there is no SNAC support and thus no support for light guns on the old core?
I assume no SNAC, it's not listed
This is from the blurb on GitHub:
Features:
MSX2/Plus/3.
Sound YM2149(PSG), YM2419(OPLL), SCC.
Various sound and memory expansions through virtual cartridges.
Turbo modes for CPU.
Mouse.
Joystick.
Real time clock.
VHD images HDD.
SD card support <4GB (SDSC) and >4GB (SDHC/SDXC).
No requires secondary SD card on I/O board v5.x. Supports both SDSC and SDHC cards.
-I am guessing SD card support is related to VHD support?
something that does not exist
is this from HRA?
Is it an emulator thing?
MSX3 was support to be MSX-Next
MSX-Kai
but Nishi requested the name to be changed because he's working on an MSX3
So what does the core do for it to claim to have MSX3 support? I'm wondering why it is listed in the github page
heh welcome to the nightmare
the sooner you ignore any mention of msx3 the better it'll be
@marble barn MSX3 is basically FPGA
or it used to be for the longest time
then Nishi became active and basically requested that they do not use MSX3
i think it was just a term meant to encompass the enhancements to the OCM firmware people were doing
i think probably the focus should be on hardware that exists heh
the original OCM was missing some stuff that people wanted; i don't believe it could be a 2+, etc
OK, cool, so it doesn't mean that it can actually do something that the current core could if it had MSX2+ support? It isn't extra sound chips etc. it is just a name for the project, right?
or maybe it was turbo-R, which i think is like partially supported
I had wondered that as well, if MSX3 = TurbpR support
either way it's just confusion when we're meant to be considering the original hardware
no HRA was working in turbo-r support and he has it working on his end
I'm just trying to break down what the old core does into features, even if they are not original hardware things, so we have them in a list and can understand what it can do that the new core can't currently (even if these are dumb feature of fantasy features, it is good to know regardless)
but with Nishi releasing new stuff he went on to other projects
yeah nishi says that a fpga implementation of turboR is part of what he's doing
which ... if it happens ... well that'll be cool for sure
Would it be possible to add the name of a reference game or app that uses this feature to @Monday's list? (ROM, DSK, CAS) I'm often looking for something to test HW with. This would be handy and would save me time with searching. Basic things like ROM, CAS, RTC, Joystick are obvious.
https://twitter.com/thara1129 here is the creator of the current OCM core
@craggy iris I'm always here to answer questions if you have some
ROMs are the list I gave you msx1/2 roms
disks - I will provide you what I use to test
hey poke-1,0 ๐
I'm more a poke-1,170/poke-1,255 guy myself
(inside MSX joke there)
-I've listed the light gun games
This is what the sheet looks like right now, is there anything in there that is wrong or doesn't make sense? Anything else missing?
Right now, based on this breakdown these are the "only" things missing from the new core that are in the old core. Is this accurate or are we missing entries?
(if someone can confirm if the old core has or has not got SCC+ and virtual lightgun support that would be helpful)
msx-music, not msx-audio
which yeah can replace fm-pac
unless i'm confused? MSX MUSIC is the OPLL is the YM2413 - MSX AUDIO is the Y8950 and wasn't ever included in a MSX
in terms of original games i think it's like less than ten that supported msx-audio but a LOT more supported msx-music as it was built into some models
OK, trying to get my head around these. So we don't need an entry for FM-PAC as this is covered by the MSX2+ support?
what is the 1 thing I have been consistently mentioning with FM-PAC... yes SRAM
and about that - @craggy iris don't forget to make sure the MSX core can save the set title/set screen/set password settings ๐
OK, so FM Pac stays and I will add +sram in the name
Do we or don't we need entries for MSX Music and/or MSX Audio or are they covered ?
sram
for more clarity on msx-music vs msx-audio: msx-music was included in most 2+s and all turbo-R models, and the fm-pac provided it for those without. probably like a thousand games/software support it. msx-audio is way better in terms of capabilities but less popular in terms of software that supports it. both would be nice eventually but i think the first would have more impact
especially since it's part of the standard (a technically optional part of the standard but still it was included in many machines at a certain point)
that said i think a fpga core is a great opportunity to reuse work from other cores to support some of these less popular addons? i don't know, haha
@fallen summit You're a stickler for details. ๐ title set ....
lol
lol @craggy iris - correct ๐
set title "vampier",2 ๐
someone can do that in the core and then reset
have fun with the result ๐
If there are any other obscure add ons then please list them and I can add to the sheet so we have them documented
Any other expansion carts, or steering wheels, paddles, etc. Be good to list them even if they aren't in either core. Good to know what all exists.
hahaha
i was just about to joke that i was glad that i wasn't the one making that list
there's a cartridge for neo geo music
there's one for pc98 music
Where's my SID support?!
vgm player - you can ask Grauw in the MSX scene how that works ๐
@tame aurora that effect can be done by typing set title "Gogurt",2
see this image? see the midi ports? slap! no you don't. what if i were to tell you that when this image was taken, those were Schrรถdinger's MIDI ports
yes i'm aware; mine says "hey bud" and plays a chime when i turn mine on
haha
at the time i wasn't sure if that was a SFG-01 or SFG-05 - i lucked out
requiring naming ends up being harder in a lot of ways, and a lot of people get upset having the names of things cluttered with stuff like that
it can be either a header or a database, but imho it's better to have the various information contained in the rom itself
you can keep a lot of handy things to make the experience better, like region, required mapper, required system type, ram, sound hardware, etc
then when a game is loaded, everything can just adjust on its own
Itโs been exciting and nice to see the msx getting a lot of love
Now Iโm trying msx2 for the first time like this. I just see a black screen ๐ฌ what am I missing. Some boot file in a folder somewhere ?
@limber kettle #1056033525922537542 message
I wonder if thepsylon would be open to a new database of WIP core BIOS files covering MSX2, Saturn and Jaguar. Could make life easier for a lot of people, and just move them over to the main BIOS database when they go live.
Ah phew, I didnโt have to make my list of sound carts as Nitta-sensei did me a solid https://twitter.com/tadahironitta/status/1611557978980888576?s=46&t=eUOco6WxmL61nDmqQ6uzaw
oh nice, an MSX core I can actually use lol
I have the old one but it takes a long time to load games
unzipping on a 3.5mhz cpu hehe
it's not fun!
How does the sound of the new msx2 core compare to the real msx machine? I know that the new msx2 core does not support OPLL yet. Does the PSG and SCC sound accurate?
It appears so. Some people I know with real hardware claim it's accurate.
Are there any rom and dsk games that currently donโt work on the new msx2 core? Iโve tested new msx core, and more than 98% of the games worked in this core. And once itโs executed, it seems to work very similarly to the real machine without errors. Other people think so too?
For roms, I have Lilly's Saga, The sword of Ianna, and Los Amores de Brunilda that don't go to game
What is the simplest way to load .dsk files?
you load dsk from the osd (dsk are present in sd card) after you need to reset the core.
Also if you have rom previously loaded you need to reset & detach rom cartridge
Ok Iโve tried that, mounted .dsk file and reset but it just returns to the msx Home Screen. Do you need the type in a command to the load the mounted dsk file?
For most games it loads directly without command to type
Ah ok, maybe the bios needs replacing then. Thanks for the tip ๐
you can use them
On XZR game, I have an issue not present in XZR II game.
After the intro of XZR game, there is a message to put the floppy B on drive B but we don't have a drive B on the OSD.
The XZR II game permits to put floppy B on drive A.
The sound of the MSX core is pretty close to the original one - depending what model you listen too greatly differs but I would say itโs pretty much in the ballpark
@karmic rover Lillieโs saga is a different story - I saw that KdL made some adjustments in his bios pack for this game to run - it might be a symbioses between ocm core and bios he maintains
But I believe that the end goal is for the core to behave like a real MSX2
RS232 or TCP/IP Stack support - a No No on both ๐ฆ
and the rest of @fallen summit wishlist ๐
as for applications in the MSX2 tab, quite a lot of them run (the ones with "needs MSXDOS are usually made for MSXDOS2, so it would require to load MSXDO22.ROM in slot 1 first
also on some of those needing MSXDOS, like PCXVIEW, it also needs adding command2.com and msxdos2.sys on the DSK image itself
or boot from MSXDOS2 disk (and rom ofc) , then swap disks
Yeah we should look if Molekula wants to add a few slot loads ๐
so wait, is this new msx core available right now as a dev build or
Yes
lol, software library is a rabbit's hole ๐
finished improving!
This demo have some graphical issues
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=88551
yeah Syntax Infinity has some graphical issues too - this is to be expected - HaRA even admitted that the VDP has timing issues
I have a question about VDP do we use the last code of OCM for VDP or the one of MiSTer Core (older version of OCM) ?
that question is for @craggy iris
OCM v3.9.2
Thank you for the confirmation ๐
to get that end screen just activate caps-lock
If one was to search an archive or elsewhere for a lot of MSX stuff bundled ready to go, what terms would find the most up to date version?
Need to play those shmups
In the old vhd-based core, you have access to change some settings before launching a game. A particularly useful one is changing vdp to "fast" which eliminates lag in game to great effect. Example:
https://youtu.be/l1bMh2F07Yg
As I never grew up owning any msx computer I have two questions. Was this faster mode ever a possible configuration on real hardware or is it strictly an fpga / emulation improvement?
Second question are there any plans to implement this in the new core later down the road when it's more mature?
@narrow furnace sorry what are you on about here?
VDP was 1 chip - 1 speed
Some MSX models had a switch to access 7mhz but not till msx2+
This switch was either hardware or with Sony/Panasonic models also software switchable
Oh, in Vampire Killer level 2, there is severe slowdowns when Medusa heads appear. I assume this is normal. The old core had an option to set vdp to fast which eliminates the lag. Was wondering if this was possible on some real msx or just some fpga improvement from the author of the previous core.
Vampire killer is from 1986 and the first Konami msx2 game
You should see the frame lag on metal gear
Almost all games had lag - but to be honest back in the day we didnโt even notice
We didnโt know better
@narrow furnace what I can tell you is that the games were created on a computer that ran 4mhz
Hi,
A recurrent question concerns the tools Konami used to develop their MSX games. AFAIK, no one ever had any idea what they were using.
For more info
The fats VDP would have been an FPGA implementation adjustment
Right, well the reason I got curious is because I'm speedrunning the game. And I didn't notice the lag there in the current record video which was played on real hardware. So that's why I was wondering if there was a configuration like this (fast vdp) for real hardware. But probably it's just the person did something to eliminate some of the lag for that screen I guess.
Thanks for the answers
@craggy iris
The real msx2 machine has a โpauseโ or โstopโ key on the keyboard that pauses the game. Is there a key that also has this function in the new msx2 core?
On my side it seeems "Print Screen"
you can test it on the basic
10 print "toto": goto 10
RUN
and strike print screen
@stray reef
`FAQ
Q: Help where is my stop key?
A: Print Screen / so to stop a basic program you would push [CTRL]+[PrntScrn]`
at the end, it will be great to have a keyboard picture of PC and MSX Keys located ๐
Q: How do I use F6 - F10 on the MSX core? A: The MSX has dual use function keys that can be accessed with shift. [F1/F6] [F2/F7] [F3/F8] [F4/F9] [F5/F10]
Here is a FAQ for the MSX core https://vampier.net/MSX/
We got a FAQ!
I probably should also give the EU SHA1 values
if anyone has a good working setup using EU files let me know
Thank you @fallen summit !
np
will be expanded with a section on rom loading
after I get off work
and whatever @stray reef will ask in the channel as those are good questions to add to the FAQ
I wonder what the select key is
On my japanese pc keyboard the key for "_" and "\" doesn't work I didn't know how to print "_"

thanks
The CTRL key works for Final Fantasy Game but doesn't work for Marchen Veil I (1986)(System Sacom), I have a screen saying hold ctrl key and reset.
thanks @low barn I will use those for the values later
I use this and the Sony one whenever I test/play around with smth
MGL files could help on this matter and have multi configuration and just switch for one to another
maybe put the file size, it helps distinguish (since ext is 16kb... at least the one I found)
it has sha1 ๐
fair enough - looks like I have the EU bios. is that locked to 50hz?
the core in MSX2 mode have a auto mode
with BIOS JP and a game 50hz It switches to 50Hz from 60Hz when the game statrs
if the game is hard programmed to switch to 60hz (vdp(10)=0 in basic) it will do that
otherwise the core will stay in 50hz for EU machines
thus giving a slower experience
poor old young me played msx games in 50hz while booting from cart
thanks ๐
good now we have a 'see the pins' excuse ๐
Nice! This will be super-helpful. thanks
@fallen summit Good! thanks!
does Knightmare+SCC patch work with the MSX1 core?
Knightmare gold needs an MSX2
not sure which patch you're talking about
the mapper should be KonamiSCC in any case
I think I have a wrong boot3.rom
boot1 and boot2 have matching SHA1 to the EU one you listed in the FAQ
I found it
ok
one moment
sha1 seems ok
boot1 - 6103b39f1e38d1aa2d84b1c3219c44f1abb5436e
boot2 - 5c1f9c7fb655e43d38e5dd1fcc6b942b2ff68b02
boot3 - 24f3bea9f47a4d9f89be1ae1040facbfd0dba1bd
no attach as ROM
right - it shows the MSX logo twice then exits to basic
ah
I found some other SCC games but they behave the same way - will try to find another source
thanks
works on openMSX
I guess the core doesn't know how to handle this ROM
not surprisingly as it's not really a konamiSCC mapper
some of these roms with SCC support have been butchered to just barely work
just play the original one
savages... ๐
plenty are bad on your rom db https://romdb.vampier.net/edit.php?id=617
btw unknown means - not sure where the dump comes from but should still work
the ROM works with the old MSX core using SCC+ in slot1. I think that expansion is not yet supported?
theres a few enhanced Konami ROMs floating around that benefit from it
roms scc like knightmare only works if the size is 64k,128k,256k or 512k.most on internet have not this size.....
hey new version of this great game
with bug fix
@honest fractal that statement is wrong
at least in my last tests
I know what you are saying but slots are being filled
the mapper can be forced to use konamiSCC
and when you look at the ROM it's 52kb big
3x16+1x4
this might be the problem
padding another 12kb might help but I don't think it will
test yourselft with mapper in auto!
All those scc roms that have a "weird" size with a hexadecimal editor, zero-filling the missing space at 32k, 64k, 128k etc... as you need, they work with the mapper in auto. Including metal gear 1 scc hack
The SD snatcher works with scc (at least the Spanish translation that I use) if you put this fake scc rom in a slot!
@honest fractal thanks ๐ I think openMSX pads the missing space
I just tried when you told me - sorry I said you were wrong ๐ I was wrong
I talked about it with Molekula on github it seems that cartridge slots don't recognize rare size roms but if you convert them to standard sizes they work perfectly even on auto.
might be a good idea to build that into the core
There is no problem, we all make mistakes, I make mistakes! We are all here so that the core works better every day!
if you can, test sd snatcher with fake scc, spanish translations works!
the openMSX auto detection works pretty good - one ROM I tested was Aleste which doesn't auto detect on openMSX
wonder if Molekula used the same
man that SCC sounds so damn sweet
the sound on the core is nearly perfect
Yes, converting the roms is a bit laborious.....it would be nice if in the future they would work in non-standard sizes.Yes, the scc sound very very well
there are some clicks on SD Snatcher
could be because it uses SCC+ and the 5th channel isn't programmable
not in the konamiSCC mapper at least
(scc channel 5 mirrors the channel 4 waveform)
I have the roms converted to standard sizes, but I don't know if it's legal or if it can be shared here. If I can share those roms, I don't mind sharing them here
I'm sure that's why. SCC+ would be a nice addition to the core in the future!
yup - WIP I believe ๐
here is the part I was talking about
you can hear clipping and ticking
The sound does not work for me in the video that you have passed using the VLC program.
I made this program in basic many years ago, in the core it doesn't work well, i tested it in real hardware and it works, could you try it in openmsx to see if it works? if it works, maybe it can help the development of the core. thank you very much! @fallen summit
can you try a philips pal msx2 and a sony msx2 japanese please?
dammmm!!!sorry
corrected the inverted vdp lines, I'll take a look at real hardware to see, I know it's not complete but the manufacturer should work.....I'll improve it in these days. Thank you very much for the test!
@honest fractal if you're 100% about the model detection let Manual Bilderbeek know of the openMSX team
(aka Quibus)
let me test for 100% sure but i think that should work
I think sound "problems" is for scc and SCC+
As a complete outsider that doesnโt understand most of this chat, I just wanted to say itโs wonderful to see such amazing support from the community on this new core. ๐ป
@bright rock oh - we're just talking MSX in general
๐ฅณ
quite some clipping going on
@honest fractal thanks! the padded ROM worked... guess I can pad the other SCC patches to have standard sizes
Hello ! Which rom bios is good for use Japanese MSX2 ?
Hi, you have information on FAQ pinned on this channel
Monsieur Vampier
Molekula is currently working to create a direct ROM/Disk/CAS load core for the MiSTer to pull it inline with other cores and how they work. I will keep a detailed manual/FAQ here https://vampier.net/MSX/
Great ! Thank you @craggy iris !
I tried PArodius, but it's because I didn't have any MSX2
hohoho
Parodius.... I love this one
@fallen summit you use this rom for your video ?
SCC fake cartridge - Konami (2003) [not a game or program - this is a dummy SCC cart for use in slot 2] [6108].rom
yeah it's just a empty cart
the mapper is what does the trick
make sure to switch mapper to konamiSCC
it's a great game; i haven't beaten it but i did beat regular snatcher msx, hehe
I beat SD snatcher before it had a translation
got stuck on the 1st big town quite a long time
but got a killer highscore on the wack a snatcher game
hah
liking a lot this core
this will remain like an MSX2 /2+ pure computer, right ?
no rare things... 3 psgs, 20 sound chips and things like that
right ?
because I tested it and I feel it real.
I just played Aleste
MSX-MUSIC will give the core more FEELING.
If you folks tell me how the MX1 and MX2 cores would be labeled correctly, then I will gladly change the naming. Often I have to make assumptions and prefer to name the systems according to real life system names ๐
you can start to remove the Turbo-R name from the current MSX core ๐
is "MSX One Chip" Accurate for that one?
yup
I would say rename it to that, before it is phased out
Yes, I want to say that this core will remain as a real MSX machine without ULTRA FANTASY devices.
because it feels good
Now I removed only TurboR, let me open up the CSV again ๐
Hm, the 1chipMSX is an FPGA reimplementation of an MSX-2 from 2006?
Yes, and it's stupid expensive to get one.
yes, and since then people have made firmware for it to add more features
@formal vale yup and this core is still being developed by KdL and Hara
yeah it was a pretty small run i think. a lot easier to get an actual msx ๐
So it would not be correct and more recognizable to just call it MSX-2, right?
@forest nymph since when are you in this server? ๐ welcome lol
@forest nymph is the real MSX guru and my personal MSX hero
you have an option to switch to MSX1
Actually, you invited me when I mentioned my interest for the MiSTer.
oh derp
I ask, because whenever I can I prefer to label a system with the name of its retro-role-model.
i don't think either core should be named after a certain msx standard/version; they should probably have names that show what their difference between them is, if possible? or if one's going to overtake the other i guess it doesn't matter
it's never MSX-2 ... it's MSX1
the new core is MSX1/2
and not MSX.5
always fun to use MSX1/MSX2
The old core would be better to name "MSX One Chip" to clearly differentiate it from the new core, that at some point will need renamed from MSX1 to MSX2 when it has full support. The old core (MSX One Chip) will be getting removed from Main once the new core has feature parity.
We can add old models in names.txt
So, what's up?
MSX One Chip isn't a name that's ever been used though ... It's 1ChipMSX or One Chip MSX or OCM for short, etc. also the new one does use parts from it, too - it's just not as directly matching, afaik
naming is tough haha
1ChipMSX is going to look weird in the menu and is going to put it to the top of the list, which is the opposite of what we want really
"MSX (1ChipMSX)" a compromise?
So, I originally mentioned TurboR in the naming of the MSX.rbf, because the github says "MSX2/Plus/3". for MSX-3 Wikipedia says "A new MSX3 was originally scheduled to be released [...] In its place, the MSX TurboR was released", guess that was wrong.
MSX.rbf I would name "MSX (1chipMSX)" (Same thought, moondandy ๐ )
MSX1.rbf I would name MSX/MSX2
This way they would group and for those who care enough and know they can see it is a One Chip.
May even make some folks learn something by googling. Would that naming be satisfactory?
@formal vale as per Nishi's request (the creator of the real MSX3) the MSX3 term has been released - this was a term created by the MSX scene to encompass their dream machines
MSX3 is unreleased as of now
I see, thank you for clarifying ๐
A MSX0 is also on the way
there is not information about the R800 for a future MSX TR core ?
Hara has worked on the FPGA implementation for the r800 - but went silent for probably the reason that he seems to work with Nishi himself
So, would the proposed naming of MSX.rbf = "MSX (1chipMSX)" and MSX1.rbf = "MSX/MSX2" be correct for now?
I would say that's a good assessment and naming convention
agreed!
MSX1/MSX2 might be better
I get why MSX1, but where the machines ever named that way and not just MSX?
no but in the scene we either use the term MSX1 or MSX2 software
MSX software encompasses both ๐
since there are many msx1 models it's too much to name them all
Yes, I get that it is the top term encompassing it all. The question is though if it should be named as a scene names the systems or like they were seen on the shelves. Just a thought, there is arguments for either and I don't mind, you folks are clearly deeper into the topic than me.
Alright then, MSX1/MSX2 it is now.
*hopes ppl would read forum/Discord/Vampier's site/etc first after seeing the naming change ๐น
the new names.txt files are live now, thank you all ๐
thanks
50hz/60hz difference?
just get the new one to feature parity and the old one can get the heave ho
no reason to keep it around in the menu
seems like molekula is getting there pretty quickly
page updated with ROM loading instructions
well the PSG sounds good
this is the Speech In Laydock and uses 'clicks' to do voices.
how up to date is the mister-devel repo with all these changes
I dont see any recent commits but I was thinking of making some changes
I may be wrong but I don't think any of the MSX2 work is in there, it is all test builds not from the main repo
you are correct ๐
Hoping it makes its way to unstable nightlies soon...
@kind robin I believe @craggy iris making the code presentable and optimized before pushing it into the world
I blame @marble barn 's list ๐

what amuses me most at this program are the "error" screens you get if you put your age under 18 or over 70 years ๐

@craggy iris do you have a new version for us to test? We are sitting on the edge of our seats
this ?
Hopefully soon. I have less free time now. The new stuff works, but the launch is not user frendly. I'm working on that now.
thanks @craggy iris take your time
Some old stuff
the original colorset for ease was Red/Black/White/Grey
just like the books as you see here
let me grab an image and try to make it look like the original
@low barn if you boot Video Graphics Plus then Push shift+f5

looks like what happened when I when I shut off the light before bed
Jeff Gerstmann streamed the MSX core recently ๐ค

There's a new MSX core available for the MiSTer and MSX2 support is also in the works! I don't think I've ever used an MSX in real-life, so let's dive into this FPGA-based re-creation of the computer with a variety of games... including some bootleg Mario games!

does anybody have a link to a doc explaining how to use disks?
e.g. list contents etc
for .dsk
I found this, but I tried FILES and I get a "File not found"
files
that's how you list files
load"filename.ext"
loads a program without running it
run"filename.ext"
executes a basic program
basic programs have the extension of BAS or LDR
do I have to switch to A: or something?
what is the disk image you're trying to look at?
one random .dsk I found
some MSX disks have a special bootloader
Fernando Martin Basket Master
does it boot when you soft-reset?
can you pm me the disk
yep hold on
Well, the good news is that it runs already on the core (NMS8250 only, HBF1XD locks up, didn't try on standard VG8240 yet)
I ran it on the sony one
hah... will check it back later, might I've mixed smth else up
@coarse ravine got his disk loading to work - not the latest core ๐
happens to the best of us
Q: Things that should work according to others aren't working on my MSX core A: Update to the latest core and check your BIOS files if that doesn't work.
had 3 revisions old ๐ too used to the downloader updater
it's all good
Q: [Software X] doesn't work right on the core A: Check if it works on a real MSX or MSX emulator (WebMSX is a fast way to check if you don't have an emulator installed)
If we just got the BIOS getter script to grab the new set of BIOS files needed for the WIP MSX2 implementation would this cause any issues for with people still using the released core with just MSX1 support? If not we should just ask to get the script updated to grab the new set
Can that decision be made in advance?
Presumably it is going to change again when/if it is further upgraded to MSX2+ and even TurboR eventually
my two cents: think it is a bit premature, as most of the tests were done on just 3 bioses (VG8240 after the core is being shaped and Sony HBF1XD/NMS8250). And for sure not very thorough tests, as the software library is quite large as well
but for what is worth, Sony and NMS ones plus 8240disk proved to be the most effective combo of bios/sub/disk roms
would be nice to have a EU/JP combo
not sure how this is going to handled in the core though
MGL could be a solution
Metal Gear Lunchbox
Maybe ROM headers could pick the region BIOS if we go that route?
a lot of roms actually sense region and change their output based on it
like i have a salamander cart that displays english text in my USA MSX, but not my JPN one heh
@marble barn ..... JP machine please 60hz
@tame aurora you have an USA MSX?
must be limited to an MSX1 then with MiDi ๐
yes
I just remembered you ever showed me a picture
right i've mentioned it and showed it a few times
haha no worries
it was the first msx i got and it was of course broken ๐
BUT NOT FOR LONG
For this one "SCC support outside ROMs (sorry SD Snatcher will sound like grinding gears for now)"
You may add the use of SCC fake in faq
oh yeah
actually - no because that would mean more text for something that is only there temp.
let's wait to see what Molekula does
Ok !
It works already this way.
On FM PAC video Molekula loads also the ROM of fmpac.
It seems to me the good way for me ๐
Yup
I bought this. What are the experts thoughts on this? I thought it looked interesting.
He put a lot to work into making they book a reality
And it has Pentaro on the cover
It's huge. Looking forward to reading it cover to cover.
it's $75 here in the US - I believe it's full color
I probably know exactly what's in the book already ๐
I mean we used Pentaro as a template for the openMSX mascot ๐
looks interesting
does it have any interviews or is it mostly showcase of games (both good but I like reading stories from the developers)
here are a bunch of reviews
the book is full color as far as I understand it
Yeah it's cool color. It has bits and pieces of history. It kind of feels like a Nintendo Power for MSX. One of the reviews said that too.
Examples
Lots of games have maps:
I hope it has the cart combos for gradius 2 ๐
and nice those KingsValley 2 maps ๐
It was costly but I think worth it. Tons of random info. I'm a big collector of game books too so...
nice
yeah all this knowledge is inside my head and a lot of it is on Bifi's webpage
Nice! I'll check it out. Thanks. Always been a fan of the MSX but never did a deep dive.
I grew up right when Konami was releasing all these games
it was always fun to see a brand new Konami game pop up
except F1 Spirit 3D ....
anything but that one

my favorite MSX1 game from Konami is a shared 1st place Penguin Adventure and The Maze of Galious
La Mulana ๐
the original La Mulana had Konami cart combinations

now you know why with the cart combos possible
I see you need the Nemesis cart to unlock the last level in Salamander. Marketing, lol
Crystal Breeze
yup ๐
thanks to Dr. Venom
I guess Konami was - if these players don't know who Venom is... well... let them eat bad ending ๐
Lol
Nemesis3 did something similar - if you missed a censor you could hardly find the upgrades to the ships and the 3 maps to get to the real game ending
now the game Gryzor/Contra on the MSX
for some reason I do not believe this game was written by any Konami team
it just doesn't feel like a Konami game at heart - I mean it was released by Konami etc. but something is missing from it
still a good conversion
King Kong 2 and Shalom (Knightmare 3) feel weird too.
the book might contain more info on this - no clue
Especially compared to SD-Snatcher which feels like 100% Konami
This book is pretty sweet

What command do you use to load? @limber kettle
Loadโcas:โ,r ?
Runโcas:โ (save as load ,r where the R stands for run after loading)
Cload (cassette load for basic programs - cannot be auto executed but loads faster)
Loadโcasโ looks for a file named โcasโ and city is not cas - so itโs a skip
City connection is also a rom btw
I used run โcasโ and get that skip immediately. Another time it gave me skip:Cod I tried loadโcasโ too.

Checking in on the nerds, how are yโall doing?
The joke is weโre all nerds. ๐คซ
I am a casual gamer
Me too honestly, MiSTer is the only โhardcoreโ shit I do lately lol
actually i did just buy a gunpla today so i will accept the nerd title
but is it really nerdy to like big robots? the jury is still out
I don't know if I've met anyone into big robots who wasn't a nerd
haha
bringing it back to MSX, i played a few gundam msx games ... there's a tactical one that's sorta like super robot wars that was cool, and then there's this other one that seems to change play styles each level...some are good, some are bad
MiSTer is the salvation for people that can't feel emulating, as me.
I have everal MiSTers and use at least one of the on a daily basis. And I also didn't "feel" with emulation, until I discovered that emulating using the Vulkan API with a swapchain of only 2 buffers on KMS/DRM (GNU/Linux is the only operating system that has KMS/DRM) and add shaders makes me "feel" with emulation too ๐
KMS/DRM + 2 buffers only + fakelottes shader is simply awesome. Even a Pi4 can do that. Try Lakka, for example.
โI have several MiSTersโ ๐
vulkan doesn't let you sync as well well as directx
you can get more than "two buffers"
not nearly as bad as opengl where you never knew what was going on
pi's are pretty bad with video latency though, you have to really wrestle with them to even get them to not use triple buffering
and that have that whole dispmanx layer going on
regardless you're likely to end up with a minimum of +1 frames there
probably +1.x, which is 1.0 to 2.0
@bright rock I have 3
lol whyyyyyy, I mean Iโm not surprised considering how awesome you are in the community (seriously your stuff rocks), but why 3?
1 at a friend
1 in the bedroom
1 in my home office here to stream and to pass time while I am running reports
I was playing some Circle of the Moon yesterday before bed
just to wind down
Thatโs pretty cool, I have just the one but I do move it around the house
Also three - CRT; VGA Monitor and of course OLED!
I ordered a new toy from misteraddons yesterday
Itโs the YC converter
@fallen summit To use translated floppies version of Snatcher, do you know what is missing on the core ?
The core doesn't show the menu on the bottom left with the disk 0
pm me a version that works
or if you have any other suggestions pm me those as well
Two MiSTer for me: 1 slim HDMI build for my C1, one beefy build for CRTs and VGA monitor
But Iโm bound to put a 3rd in an arcade cab at some point ๐
Dispmanx is not used on any modern distros. We have been on standard KMS/DRM for a year or more.
With KMS/DRM on the Pi, you ask for 2 buffers = you get 2 buffers. NOTHING to fight about anymore.
Heh, I did the dispmanx backend for RetroArch, I know the thing pretty well so I understand you. But things have changed a lot towards standarization and that added frame is history.
I prefer the MiSTer (having GPL-ed hardware reimplementations of my fetiche machines is a dream core true!) but as things are, Pi4 is awesome for low-latency emulation given you do it on a well tuned system
Stupid distros enable things like triple buffer + threaded video by default, giving software emulation a bad reputation. I have tried to convince them to disable that shit, but they insist on keeping it so they can say their laggy distro emulates DreamCast on the Pi4
I know software emulation can be a lot better than it generally is, but in practice.. it almost never is
I still don't find the CPU in a pi powerful enough to do the job, video hardware aside
too many compromises
it's okay for like 2600, and maybe even NES
but come fourth gen, no good
MiSTer is extremely simple to setup and upgrade compared to using Pi or a PC with disparate emulators
I have 3 MiSTer in arcade cabs, 2 home setups with TVs, and one travel MiSTer
I tried RPis but I always found them too fiddly and brittle (I had a distro break after updating, granted that was a bad distro to use to begin with)
Wow. Howโd you approach the arcade builds?
USB arcade controller or mistercade? ๐
I used both Deamonbytes and Xinmotek encoders
the Xinmotek are surprisingly low lag and available from China (the other "zero delay" board from China is garbage with the worst lag we've ever seen)
so basically the control panel is all wired to USB as a standalone component, and the screen takes HDMI input - so the cab can take any HDMI+USB device
they're Arcade1Up mods - but you could do the same with any cab using RGB output
Lol, I had to learn the hard way with those bullshit Chinese โzero delayโ encoders
Cool, thatโs roughly the approach Iโm planning one of these days
Sweet, I have 2 heavily modded Arcade1ups running EmuELEC inside
You know, I do have room for a Mr mini arcadeโฆ
Iโd have to build it Taito egret rotatable thoughโฆ

Somehow I totally missed the big picture of more easily getting computer games on consumer CRTs!
it's pretty darn cool
i bet the output is a lot better than my actual msx's YC output
the 2+ especially had bad caps and even after i replaced them, it wasn't great. luckily i use rgb for that one
the 1 ... well it's my only option there; luckily it's not too bad
this is obviously AI generated
Did you connect via composite or s-video?
no it's the Western release for megaman artwork
Capcom made fun of it later
I know, but it looks like AI art
a horror show of disjointed styles and unnatural poses
Is he wearing cloth, metal, what
he's wearing shells harvested from beetles

better one
lol
Thatโs late Liefeld
Huh...Didn't know Bender from Futurama ever did a cosplay as Captain America. He must be actively grabbing a beer from his chest compartment with his left hand.
so the new MSX2 core will support s-ram - some might wonder why that is important however.
having that said - the FM-Pac itself has a bios - we made a translation of this bios and it can be found at https://msxtranslations.com/fmpac.php
Translation patch for FM Pana Amusement Cartridge a.k.a. FM PAC (FMใใใขใใฅใผใบใกใณใใซใผใใชใใธ) for MSX
now for those who are still wondering what an FM-PAC is - it contains the YM2413 which also can be found in the SMS
it allows the MSX to use FM synthesis and thus a better quality of music instead of the regular square waves or noise channel.
(it's like the SCC chip from konami)
The SW-M004 is a cartridge called FM-PAC (FM Pana Amusement Cartridge) which was introduced by Panasonic in 1988. It is the only official MSX-MUSIC cartridge expansion and was released under the Panasoft brand, used by Panasonic for some software.
it's also called MSX-Music on some MSX2+/Turbo-R models
Success ๐
And yes, MSX can run Doom ๐ sort of
๐ค
nyrikki did a great job making that Doom version ๐
well, it isn't as snappy as the OCM based core (less RAM, no IDE yet)
SymAMP doesn't run (needs more RAM)
@cosmic maple here ๐
core is gonna make me unsure about how much i care about my actual MSX2+
so what's the source of this core? Is it from scratch or just a heavy rework of the existing core?
OCM elements and a lot of cool stuff by molekula
so the same bugs that are in the OCM with the VDP will be in this core too
but that's ok
I hope they'll get fixed - I put a few bug reports in but nothing back yet
But the OCM version used in this new implementation is more recent that the one in the old Mister OCM, isnยดt it? Are the bugs still present in the new OCM revision?
Yup
the syntax infinity part is the most interesting one
Molekula already fixed the vdp(10)=255 part for this core
(VDP register 9 all 8 bits filled with 1 triggers a fun bug on the OCM core)
interleave doesn't work as expected though - neither on this core or OCM
is there any update ?
yes @craggy iris has not as much time as this moment - so our patience is appreciated
Hopefully what is done can be committed into Main soon even if not ready for a full release, Rysha seems keen to start helping add to the core.
I am almost ready to start adding headers to the roms
going to piss of half of the MSX community - but so be it
why ?
