So are we really just a couple of releases away from the Saturn being in a finished/official state?

I’d say it feels pretty finished already. No idea when srg320 will release the next official release though

Just noticed that the Sega Saturn thread is now tagged "Established" 🙂

Is is just me or is Thunderforce V still choppy as heck in places compared to original hardware?

floral saddle
#

I thought it was more pronounced than I remembered too.

You can really make Radiant Silvergun chug hard when using the search weapon as well. Think if there was slowdown on real hardware then it can be a bit more on the core.

#

Single. Choppy with fast timings too. QMTECH.

as long as you know it’s not really the core at fault. and single SD is doing all it can

#

Doesn't sound all that 'finished' to me 🤔

hearty marten

Because there’s like one or two bugs?

I mean, technically 0 bugs would be “finished”, but the differences between successive versions seems very small now

I said it felt “pretty finished” (i.e. almost)

There is always more to do but it feels mostly complete. I assume if srg didn’t have things left he still wanted to do he would have released another official release. Maybe this close he is just waiting till he is ‘done’ to do another general release?

I know that there are things in Main_MiSTer for both Saturn and TG16 that are waiting for a new release - and those changes (at least on the TG16 side) require a simultaneous release of Main and the core.

@wise brook I tried my wheel on the saturn core and it doesnt work in wheel mode or 3d pad mode in out run. analog seems to be detected in 3d pad mode so the steering wheel works, but the L/R used for gas dont seem be be bound to any axis that mister has bound to my wheel

#

wheel mode doesnt respond at all, not even the start button.

#

seems to do weird things to the bios screen when wheel mode is toggled also, jumbles up the music player oddly

wise brook
#

thanks for testing. Do you know if whell support has something like a “module” that can be added into cores

#

copy and paste the code so to speak?

thorn pagoda
#

is psx the only other core with notable wheel support actually?

#

maybe its on ao486 too

rich violet
#

Maybe worth making a feature request?

wise brook
#

there kind of already is one

#

easiest solution is, finding out if there’s a guy specifically known for adding the feature to the psx core

#

like blue1 being the snac GOAT

#

i’d even be willing to try dip my toes into adding the feature to the core if I had even the most basic of starting points

thorn pagoda
#

sorg added the psx wheel support iirc

inner token
#

I think I had wheel working with snac, but the issue says it's broke. I know you're talking about usb wheel(I think). There is already code in hps2pad.sv for the usb wheel. SRG probably broke it when added the snac code(he rewrote most of it) . You might be able to try a build before that and see if usb wheel worked. You just need to figure out how it's broke and fix it.

wise brook
#

unless the midi keyboard isn’t working, but I’m not a big enough sicko to own that

#

TBH that probably connected with the serial port

inner token
#

ok maybe they were wrong about snac. but the usb wheel is in the options for usb pads, so it may have worked at one time.

i think this is the core of the problem, but i'll let you wizards determine that.

thorn pagoda
#

i don't think it works to map both triggers/pedals to the same axis since that means you cant press both at once

#

i.e brake and accelerate at the same time

warped saddle
#

you have two axes, use them

thorn pagoda
#

and my axis

celest lake
#

Off hand is used with disadvantage

warped saddle
#

even just mapping triggers to the analog stick axes would require a not small change to main for mapping. you'd have to ask the user to move the triggers, and then probably selectively disable mister's generation of digital button events for analog movement

thorn pagoda
#

how does like, batocera handle this for example?

warped saddle
#

by not having mister's input model

#

it's not comparable. they just...map the analog triggers to triggers

inner token
#

I think saturn wheel buttons were all digital and only the wheel itself was analog. So why was Walrus's wheel not working when wheel was selected was what I was wondering. The analog triggers not working when 3d pad is selected is a different problem.

wise brook
#

double check that he was using up down

warped saddle
#

and it was mapped in main as such

wise brook
#

I remember that the paddles are mapped to the up and down parts of the dpad

Saw some people talk about the Eadmaster translation, and apparently it’s overly literal, and clear that Eadmaster rushed through it to be “the first one” to release a “completed” patch. I also don’t fully trust Eadmaster for various reasons. Imma wait until the SamIam translation comes out.

small ore
#

The person eadmaster got to help translate initially was essentially a beginner in japanese, hence the literal-ness

small ore
#

From what I've heard from other translation groups on other projects that were discussing it at the time, the translation is excessively literal, and in some cases has odd grammar and uses words and phrasing that doesn't sound like something a human would say in conversation.

#

Yeah, heard the same. Like, it’s definitely better than using Google Translate’s camera function on the game, but Imma wait for the real deal.

burnt matrix
#

Princess Crown got translated, this guy did it first. None of that is changing. I think it’s cool other people are translating and good on them. But these are people who worked hard for free and in their spare time. We should appreciate their hard work.

#

And to be frank I don’t think a Princess Crown translation would’ve ever been released if it weren’t for this guy. We should be thankful that he actually got it done and kicked everyone else’s butts into gear.

errant crown
#

I will say I am glad he indirectly got the ball rolling again

burnt matrix
#

He very directly got the ball rolling and it’s unfortunate the original translator had such a negative public reaction to it.

#

I honestly never heard of the guy before reading the Princess Crown’s translation GitHub crediting him. First thing you read.

small ore
#

I think if the original people just had a few more updates over the course of the project, that whole incident could've been avoided. They tended to just go completely radio silent for years, only offering up maybe "yes i'm still working on it" when it inevitably came up when someone asked if it was dead, or relying on other people to offer second hand information that they spoke with cyberwarrior or sam and were told it was still in progress.

The link that @tribal burrow posted to a post from feb this year, has more information about the status of the project, than what they were offering up over the decade this project has been around for, at the time it was actually happening. If they just had some more contemporary status updates, it would've put a lot of people at ease about the whole thing.

burnt matrix
tribal burrow
#

Yeah every fan translation project is a blessing honestly. It’s nice when the projects reach or get close to professional results but these ppl are working for free. Even professional translators and localizers get paid peanuts these days but that’s another issue

burnt matrix
#

Yeah that’s unfortunate and I worry about ChatGPT translations. Although I’m a hypocrite as it doesn’t bother me when a fan translation uses ChatGPT lol.

FWIW I don't have a particularly strong opinion regarding Princess Crown's tl, but a lot of this does remind me a bit of the work going on rn with Tales of Destiny 2 - another RPG with at least two distinct ongoing fan tls.
I don't think having different interpretations is inherently a bad thing, but it's pretty clear that eadmaster and SamIAm have different priorities in mind. I'm just happy the game is getting attention at all, as someone that enjoys Vanillaware's work and has always had a passing interest in this game.

#

I will also add that SamIAm has been Pandaman's goto translator as of late (I forget if he's the sole JP translator or not, but have you SEEN the Virtua Cop video? lol), so I perfectly understand if he just has a lot of shit ongoing getting in the way of his free passion project.

# mossy crystal Are there any games that are worth it to play on the saturn analog controller?

NiGHTS is the main one. If you play the English fan translation of Baroque, the 3D control pad gives you a much better control experience. Burning Rangers and Sonic 3D Blast, also. It’s not crucial to the experience, but all scenarios of Shining Force III support it, making overworld traversal more fluid and convenient. There’s also that racing game that just got translated to English, Choro Q Park.

#

Panzer Dragoon and Zwei support the 3D control pad, but you can’t move all the way to the corners, because they’re emulating the Mission Stick controls, which have a square gate.

#

I bought a Mission Stick mainly to play those games.

I guess I just never noticed the issue because I never really played that game too much

perhaps based upon how the core handles resolution changes it is more or less likely to happen

does the default Saturn core utilize dual ram if present? Or do you have to launch the latest unstable build for that?

burnt matrix
#

By default the dual ram build is not distributed through the official MiSTer update script

#

We’re thinking of ways of automating that process in the future but if you want dual ram you’ll need to download it yourself for the time being,

Where in the game are you at?

zenith ginkgo
#

Quick Saturn core question. I booted up Sakura Wars 1 and the option to save is greyed out. I haven't touched the Saturn core in awhile, do I need to set up a virtual memory card in the core in order for games to save?

wise brook
#

nah

#

so, have you updated everything?

#

cause the moment you get to a save point in a game, making a profile in an rpg for example, you should be able to commit the save to the sd card

#

or just turn on auto saving once you boot a game

zenith ginkgo
#

Did a full update_all. Saving in game is still greyed out. I must have some setting off I assume

wise brook
#

including autosave

zenith ginkgo
#

Yup, autosave is on

wise brook
#

then your fine?

#

you don’t have anything to save until you get about 30mins in

zenith ginkgo
#

I worked my way back to the first save screen, and its still greyed out

#

I am on the latest unstable saturn core, so maybe thats the culprit?

wise brook
#

so you’ve made a save in one of the 3 save slots, and the mister osd didn’t show saving for a second?

pearl harbor
#

Yes. Just save in the game itself first. Then it should show up in the core OSD.

zenith ginkgo
#

Thats the issue, it won't let me save in game. The save screen has 'save' greyed out, like its wanting a memory card plugged into the system

wise brook
#

wel it’s not a core stable/unstable issue

zenith ginkgo
#

Yea, thats what I am figuring. It worked fine on an older core

pearl harbor
#

Have you tried saving in a different game?

zenith ginkgo
#

Yea, I've had no problems in other games on this build

hmm might want to ask the Shiro! discord they would know more intimately about the game

vocal comet

Oh right, I forgot the JP version is easier than the EU/US versions

#

More ink ribbons etc?

sturdy dagger
#

Yeah, I think? I'm getting 3 per pickup, and I have around 17 now I think? (Saved around 4 or 5 times)

I think there should be less zombies (I do know this is a thing with Resident Evil 2 and Biohazard 2)

And maybe health of zombies too?

#

I'm getting the standard 15 rounds of handgun ammo aswell as 7 shotgun shells for the ammo pickups

vocal comet
#

maaaybe. I'm not sure about the zombie count (as far as I remember there is no difference between the EU version and the JP version I play nowadays, but then again, it's been very long since i played the EU version), but it's very likely they could have changed the health of the zombies

#

From what I know the US version doesn't have auto aim

#

Can't remember if EU has it or not

sturdy dagger
#

https://youtu.be/TQGlB1LITGA

At around the 17min mark. He talks about the Dreamcast port of Resident Evil 2. He then goes to talk about how the Japanese versions are easier and shows a segment where there's less zombies compared to US/PAL. (Although, it is about Resident Evil 2)

Here is something that I don't think has been done before: a showcase of unique in-game content among ALL versions of Resident Evil 2! This took a lot of work and a lot of play, so I hope you enjoy it! Let's go crazy!

I need to see with the translator, there are some grammar errors and a typo during my gameplay.

There is a message inside the game where it should say : "you have lost your boost of speed", instead we have "you have lost your boots of speed".

Otherwise, the translation is interesting and should help people playing that game.

We used the same Saturn devkits at Core. One per team. Testers had the hardware address checker.
Earlier kits were the Sofia boxes from Japan. We had a protoype the size of a beer fridge with only one SH2. Alas, someone fried the mainboard by introducing it to 240V. It probably ended up in a skip.

I kind of wonder how companies like the ones who made the specialized codecs for the Nintendo DS kept doing business now that everything uses standardized and open codecs mostly, or internalizes theirs.

In October 2011, Mobiclip[6] was bought by Nintendo and is now a subsidiary of the latter. Since then it is now known as "Nintendo European Research & Development" or "NERD".

fringe kettle
#

Hmm, I'm having trouble getting the Sakura Wars 2 English TL to boot on either the latest stable and unstable cores, despite the English TL of 1 and the original JP version of 2 loading just fine

#

it's giving me the "Drive Door Open" error

wise brook
#

resetting core or resetting game not helping?

#

everything fine my end

fringe kettle
#

I just try to load the game and it goes to the CD player menu with "Drive Door Open"

#

and resetting from there just brings me back

wise brook
#

sometimes a bad copy of the file can do that. sometimes just relaunch the core and game can get over that hump

fringe kettle
#

and again, SW1 and the Japanese version of 2 load just fine, and I've tried both my own custom patched files and even tried a prepatched version found online, same result

wise brook
#

odd

#

region settings of the core and bios type?

fringe kettle
#

yeah I'm really scratching my head here

#

I tried switching between regions but that didn't seem to help either

wise brook
#

i use a region free patched JP 1.01 bios myself

#

But this shouldn’t be giving you an issue

fringe kettle
#

I'm pretty sure that's the one I have, I've been able to play NTSC-U and NTSC-J games without issue

wise brook
#

i hate to waste anyone’s time testing solutions,

if you had a spare sdcard to try with i’d recommend that

fringe kettle
#

considering everything else works, games and cores alike, I'm not sure that'll be of much help

#

it's not the patched bin/cues either, I'm testing them out in Mednafen and they're working fine

wise brook
#

only really to tell if a bad sector was on the card.

i just converted it with chdman and that boots 1st time too

fringe kettle
#

so it's specifically this game, specifically on mister

wise brook
#

erm, what’s your input set to?

#

i’d be shocked if this game had the Shinobi bug

#

but stranger things have happened

#

nah, boots with 2 pads set as default

fringe kettle
#

okay now this is odd

#

so just to do some A/B testing, I put both my self-patched files and the prepatched downloaded files on there, and this time my self-patched ones worked

#

even though they didn't before

wise brook
#

hmm

#

hate to post it

#

but occasionally it’s appropriate

#

god damn i love this opening song

fringe kettle
#

anyhow I have another quick question

wise brook
#

sure

fringe kettle
#

how do I get SW2 to recognize my SW1 save on Mister

wise brook
#

easy!

#

the games only share a save instance, if they’re kept in the same subfolder

#

if for example you have a folder called “kohran is best girl” and put all your sakura wars games in there, a save file with that folders name would exist

#

so, if you’ve already got a SW1 save you could just duplicate it and rename it to the folder for SW2

#

or just put the SW2 game into the SW1 folder

fringe kettle
#

so I make a folder with the same filename as the SW2 bin/cue and put the SW1 save in it?

wise brook
#

keep it in the saves directory

#

it’ll look like this

#

root-saves-saturn
