Passing Breeze for life!
MSS
it was a cool adventure 🙂
So are we really just a couple of releases away from the Saturn being in a finished/official state?
I’d say it feels pretty finished already. No idea when srg320 will release the next official release though
Did Robby’s crappy pyramid game get fixed?
Just noticed that the Sega Saturn thread is now tagged "Established" 🙂
Is is just me or is Thunderforce V still choppy as heck in places compared to original hardware?
I thought it was more pronounced than I remembered too.
You can really make Radiant Silvergun chug hard when using the search weapon as well. Think if there was slowdown on real hardware then it can be a bit more on the core.
single or dual?
Single. Choppy with fast timings too. QMTECH.
as long as you know it’s not really the core at fault. and single SD is doing all it can
Doesn't sound all that 'finished' to me 🤔
Because there’s like one or two bugs?
I mean, technically 0 bugs would be “finished”, but the differences between successive versions seems very small now
who told you it was?
I said it felt “pretty finished” (i.e. almost)
There is always more to do but it feels mostly complete. I assume if srg didn’t have things left he still wanted to do he would have released another official release. Maybe this close he is just waiting till he is ‘done’ to do another general release?
Art is never finished only abandoned
what's my crappy pyramid GAEMZ
The one that ran like a slide show some time back was kind of Egypt themed? You asked for a real hardware test
I know that there are things in Main_MiSTer for both Saturn and TG16 that are waiting for a new release - and those changes (at least on the TG16 side) require a simultaneous release of Main and the core.
oh yeah lol
so maybe it's pending the Main release
Hey all, whats the status of Saturn on Mister? do i need to download something separately? like a stable build? or just update_all and load up the SD?
Saturn is in an excellent state right now. You can get an older build from this year (but still good) from running update_all. There are newer builds you can download from #unstable-nightlies
You will need saturn bios files, which can be optionally obtained from update_all
it’s really good, you should try it
Nice! I really want to play that Golden Axe Duel game!
This could be multiple games. Powerslave? Lupin the Third? Cleopatra Fortune? Jewels of the Oracle?
(aside from the slideshow part. I mean the pyramid part.)
you can even play the S-TV version
It’s our secret game, just between @visual grove and I
Giggle puppy snuggle love was the name of our homebrew. There’s only a button for ‘frolic’
it’s called Atlantis - The Lost Tales and it’s still choppy
I forgot about that one, my ace in the hole was bringing up the Battletoads core
Now I’ve got two aces
Oh I missed that Saturn Egypt game 😆
Oh man, I just updated the core for the first time in a few months and out of the blue, I have a stark green dot in the center when booting into a game
Somehow the light gun is now enabled (or supported 🤷♂️) cuz I never had the dot for the light gun before (and never used one either)
go into input settings and make sure pad 2 isn't set to lightgun
I didn’t see this in the GitHub but on the newest single ram core in Panzer Dragoon the top half of the text flickers on the hard mode ending. You can view it by entering the code from the main menu so you don’t have to play through the whole game. Can someone test on single and dual ram and see if they can replicate?
hahah have had the exactly same issue and thoughts 😄
Its super easy to fix ... like Zakk described...
Yeah it was but I have no recollection nor had a need to enable it ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Was weird that it was enabled seemingly be da fault
Default
The fault of default 🤷♂️😜
Not an issue on dual ram with the latest unstable core + main.
yup, the bits where you freely look around are half the fps that they should be, will raise it on github later.
@wise brook I tried my wheel on the saturn core and it doesnt work in wheel mode or 3d pad mode in out run. analog seems to be detected in 3d pad mode so the steering wheel works, but the L/R used for gas dont seem be be bound to any axis that mister has bound to my wheel
wheel mode doesnt respond at all, not even the start button.
seems to do weird things to the bios screen when wheel mode is toggled also, jumbles up the music player oddly
thanks for testing. Do you know if whell support has something like a “module” that can be added into cores
copy and paste the code so to speak?
is psx the only other core with notable wheel support actually?
maybe its on ao486 too
Maybe worth making a feature request?
there kind of already is one
easiest solution is, finding out if there’s a guy specifically known for adding the feature to the psx core
like blue1 being the snac GOAT
i’d even be willing to try dip my toes into adding the feature to the core if I had even the most basic of starting points
sorg added the psx wheel support iirc
I think I had wheel working with snac, but the issue says it's broke. I know you're talking about usb wheel(I think). There is already code in hps2pad.sv for the usb wheel. SRG probably broke it when added the snac code(he rewrote most of it) . You might be able to try a build before that and see if usb wheel worked. You just need to figure out how it's broke and fix it.
snac wheel and everything snac is working perfectly now
unless the midi keyboard isn’t working, but I’m not a big enough sicko to own that
TBH that probably connected with the serial port
ok maybe they were wrong about snac. but the usb wheel is in the options for usb pads, so it may have worked at one time.
thanks for confirming snac wheel works btw
the problem is in hps2pad or may be around here I'd say https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/blob/main/rtl/Saturn/SMPC.sv#L802
case (PORT_ST)
I was able to use an N64 nso controller as a wheel
analog log stick worked for the analog axis of the wheel and up down was mapped to the floppy paddles behind the wheel
What about the SNAC midi keyboard wheel
With Dack and Start buttons
So what do you think @prisma wraith problem was that it didn't work for his wheel? core didn't like his mappings
Thanks for the heads up. Will test it later.
Tested the new mister unstable with albert odyssey. Issue has been fixed. Sound plays perfectly in sync with the animation during the intro.
Same for Die Hard Arcade, all fixed, github issue closed.
oh, he finally added all the fixes to main? for the first time in months?
i’m hearing a burp at the start of tracks in the attract mode.
gonna check it’s not a .chd thing
Except it’s not the first time in months. There have been Saturn main fixes 10 and 11 days ago, another in mid-March, and others in Feb
oh, I missed the ones from 10 and 11 days ago
and March...
I think it might be a CHD thing, new mister update caused the fox logo music to cut off WAY early for me. Switching to bin/cue fixed it.
present in redump bin/cue and chd
i coped over wifi so unless that introduced the exact same issue
dual ram direct output, for reference
i’ll take out the sd card and manually transfer a bin/cue…
copying bin/cue of Die Hard Arcade and Dynamite Deca
cue/bin on my end and everything sounds good. I noticed that the intro subtitles for the voice over are way out of sync in a couple of places, gonna check real hardware and see how it does things...
did you get a prank release of the game
It's bugged, the subtitles are appearing over the logo when they shouldn't, the timing is way out.
might be a case of an earlier fix when combined with this throws something out
it’s all part of the process
~~I accidentally loaded up Die Hard Trilogy trying to hear these burps, and I don't think I ever ran it on the core before... but after the copyright text the game completely hangs on a black screen with a ton of garbage noise just endlessly looping. Tried with both CHD and bin/cue. Running off an SD card with Dual RAM.
Tested on todays unstable main, and the slightly older unstable.~~
Edit: Ignore me, literally known already.
use regular bios, set region manually , don't use RAM carts https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Saturn_MiSTer/issues/161
Solved that mystery fast
I think a note on the compatibility spreadsheet would be helpful with that. Those are the sources I check first.
The relevant note has been there for a long time , I added it myself
Ignore everything about me right now, it's too early to be doing testing... I should go back to bed.
sleep well sweet prince
Good news, the subtitle bug is only with the patched version of the game that I mistakenly booted, the normal version doesn't exhibit the bug.
just the audio burp for my dual ram setup
Audio blips like that are weird, I reported a few that others couldn't replicate at all so closed the github tickets, but I still hear them to this day.
And just in case anyone notices the patched version bug in future, this is what it looks like.
hey y'all, SHIRO! is doing everyone's favorite Saturn-exclusive rhythm game for May's community challenge, and once again there's a MiSTer/emulation category: https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2025/04/30/the-shiro-community-grooves-to-jung-rhythm-this-may/
That’s very considerate to include a MiSTer category. Thank you,
yep. we did that for the challenge in March, too, although no one entered with the MiSTer ... hopefully some FPGA fans give Jung Rhythm a shot
Not that I need another controller, but has anyone used the Twin Stick via Reflex Adapt?
I've used it a lot. Pretty good to play xeno crisis on mega drive!
Oh man, that’s what I wanted to hear! Thank you
That's pretty cute.
さすが日本
I like how it got unofficially nicknamed the Spielberg Controller
Cuz Steven Spielberg inspired the creation of the controller
the thing is, the saturn didnt even have two separate analog sticks, so the triggers could be bound to the right analog stick or vertical axis on the left stick and work with wheels perfectly fine. imo the analog triggers on saturn would be best translated that way instead of adding new axis specifically for the triggers to mister
i think this is the core of the problem, but i'll let you wizards determine that.
i don't think it works to map both triggers/pedals to the same axis since that means you cant press both at once
i.e brake and accelerate at the same time
you have two axes, use them
and my axis
Off hand is used with disadvantage
even just mapping triggers to the analog stick axes would require a not small change to main for mapping. you'd have to ask the user to move the triggers, and then probably selectively disable mister's generation of digital button events for analog movement
how does like, batocera handle this for example?
by not having mister's input model
it's not comparable. they just...map the analog triggers to triggers
I think saturn wheel buttons were all digital and only the wheel itself was analog. So why was Walrus's wheel not working when wheel was selected was what I was wondering. The analog triggers not working when 3d pad is selected is a different problem.
double check that he was using up down
and it was mapped in main as such
I remember that the paddles are mapped to the up and down parts of the dpad
if the wheel uses some odd axis for turning it may not get auto recognized as one of the analog sticks
there you can see what he originally reported #1046941029296779344 message
Maybe he'll test more(in wheel mode), and maybe try mapping or remapping
Wasn’t that actually the case, though?
Oh, I know that one. I watched the Pandamonium vid.
All hail the panda
last thing about the wheel for now @prisma wraith looks like SRG fixed the wheel on Mar27 so if you can try a build after that.
Anyone finished Princess Crown? Is it good? Worth playing through? Difficult?
I'm over 20 hours in and I think it's Vanillaware's best game. Definitely worth playing. I found the difficulty just right so far.
Definitely worth playing, yes... but I think Unicorn Overlord is their best game... so far.
part of me is wondering why you’ve not rushed to find out for yourself.
this platform gives you access to the majority of gaming history at no additional cost
patching and starting has never been easier
just… play and see
maybe discover a disappointment for yourself, because then at least, it’ll be your own experience
i resent not watching one of my favorite films for years because i trusted a negative review over my own judgment
I found a bug while playing the other day and I'm not sure how to tell if it's the patch or a core bug. 🤔
You could try to replicate it in the unpatched original rom.
It's really far in the game at a specific part unfortunately. I'm assuming the saves from the patched version aren't compatible with the unpatched version
Saw some people talk about the Eadmaster translation, and apparently it’s overly literal, and clear that Eadmaster rushed through it to be “the first one” to release a “completed” patch. I also don’t fully trust Eadmaster for various reasons. Imma wait until the SamIam translation comes out.
The person eadmaster got to help translate initially was essentially a beginner in japanese, hence the literal-ness
Allegedly, paul_met contributed a bit to this version, which is cool, but I have no idea of the extent
Gotcha, that makes sense. This whole job has a real amateur vibe to it.
Just to be clear are you talking about the Princess Crown patch that went to 1.0 recently?
Yeah
I haven’t had a chance to look at it myself yet
The one by the guy who built it off a like 0.3 version from the original translator
Didn’t get the impression that the script was amateurish from the VGE videos
Right yeah
From what I've heard from other translation groups on other projects that were discussing it at the time, the translation is excessively literal, and in some cases has odd grammar and uses words and phrasing that doesn't sound like something a human would say in conversation.
Yeah, heard the same. Like, it’s definitely better than using Google Translate’s camera function on the game, but Imma wait for the real deal.
One has had much more effort put into it
Translating Japanese literally definitely sounds / reads unnatural in English.
Is the SamIAm one still active ?
They say they're still working on it. It caused a whole ruckus back when eadmaster announced his.
It’s like 99% done, but life has gotten in the way, and there are some serious bugs he needs to fix
Gotcha
For anyone curious this seems to be some recent info:
I still gotta make time for Sakura Wars 1 lol…talk about life getting in the way :/
But this is the real deal. You’re the first I’ve heard not liking the translation and from what I played it was fine.
Princess Crown got translated, this guy did it first. None of that is changing. I think it’s cool other people are translating and good on them. But these are people who worked hard for free and in their spare time. We should appreciate their hard work.
And to be frank I don’t think a Princess Crown translation would’ve ever been released if it weren’t for this guy. We should be thankful that he actually got it done and kicked everyone else’s butts into gear.
I will say I am glad he indirectly got the ball rolling again
He very directly got the ball rolling and it’s unfortunate the original translator had such a negative public reaction to it.
I honestly never heard of the guy before reading the Princess Crown’s translation GitHub crediting him. First thing you read.
I think if the original people just had a few more updates over the course of the project, that whole incident could've been avoided. They tended to just go completely radio silent for years, only offering up maybe "yes i'm still working on it" when it inevitably came up when someone asked if it was dead, or relying on other people to offer second hand information that they spoke with cyberwarrior or sam and were told it was still in progress.
The link that @tribal burrow posted to a post from feb this year, has more information about the status of the project, than what they were offering up over the decade this project has been around for, at the time it was actually happening. If they just had some more contemporary status updates, it would've put a lot of people at ease about the whole thing.
They’re all cool. Love translators making games more accessible for everyone. 💪
Yeah every fan translation project is a blessing honestly. It’s nice when the projects reach or get close to professional results but these ppl are working for free. Even professional translators and localizers get paid peanuts these days but that’s another issue
Yeah that’s unfortunate and I worry about ChatGPT translations. Although I’m a hypocrite as it doesn’t bother me when a fan translation uses ChatGPT lol.
Like if I’m paying for it, do the due diligence.
There's a PSP game, where the only translation available is a pre-ai google translated script. It's borderline unplayable because of how terrible it is.
Anecdotally it seems like lots of companies in Japan are pretty gung-ho about using AI. I could see a lot of them leaning on it for translation and just have a native speaker check it at like minimum wage/contracted so they don’t have to pay for their insurance benefits etc
lol is it that 3D Suikoden game?
Shining Ark, had to look it up real quick
borderline unplayable may have been an overstatement
de-lurking to ask a question of you kind folks - seems consensus is that multitap *should *work via SNAC, but no dice for me on stable or latest unstable core, with/without stable main. Can anyone confirm it's working (or not) for them? Cheers
I had it working in my old builds, not sure it works with the current core SRG rewrote some stuff and I don't have one to test. You can try one of my old builds. they won't be as good as current code and may not even boot. #1046941029296779344 message
Ah great, thank you - will test it now
Some people are just never happy
unfortunate for who
@inner token Your build works great, thank you! I've got 7 players working straight away (6p via multitap, 1p USB) - looks like the SNAC refactor might have caused an issue with it
not concern trolling, or being facetious
cool I thought that would work, I have another build on here with usb multitap too you can look for. there was a limit and you couldn't do 10 player.
Nice, lucky to have the hardware to run it with SNAC, but nice to know there's USB to try as well - it's really just for bomberman, and that seems to work well even with older builds
FWIW I don't have a particularly strong opinion regarding Princess Crown's tl, but a lot of this does remind me a bit of the work going on rn with Tales of Destiny 2 - another RPG with at least two distinct ongoing fan tls.
I don't think having different interpretations is inherently a bad thing, but it's pretty clear that eadmaster and SamIAm have different priorities in mind. I'm just happy the game is getting attention at all, as someone that enjoys Vanillaware's work and has always had a passing interest in this game.
I will also add that SamIAm has been Pandaman's goto translator as of late (I forget if he's the sole JP translator or not, but have you SEEN the Virtua Cop video? lol), so I perfectly understand if he just has a lot of shit ongoing getting in the way of his free passion project.
the virtua cop review is, simply put, the gold standard by which all other long form game review/documentaries ought be judged by
Yeah, I’m glad he was able to pull most of the dev team for that. Wish he could have gotten more sega devs for the sega rally video, but pivoting to the actual rally race to mirror the game was good as well.
Granted, I came out of that video telling myself “you don’t need another hobby, don’t look for a used Celica”
I was excited for a Yo-Kai Watch 4 translation, only to find out they translated it with AI. Yuck.
I think that was true of the early releases, but in the months since, a lot of work has been done to make the English more natural. You can see it clearly in the github diffs
I've had no issues with the translation so far. Growing up with JRPG's in the 90's I've seen many worse translations, and they were official
No "This guy are sick" to be found so far in Princess Crown
no jokes about Bill Clinton either
...or Annie Lennox.
All your base are belong to us
oh like the gif
Oh man, this game is good!
Haven't you seen Red Dwarf
there are indeed space cats
Never
Are there any games that are worth it to play on the saturn analog controller?
and one of them sounds like ALF
Nights into Dreams
Sega Rally Championship Netlink+ Edition
NiGHTS is the main one. If you play the English fan translation of Baroque, the 3D control pad gives you a much better control experience. Burning Rangers and Sonic 3D Blast, also. It’s not crucial to the experience, but all scenarios of Shining Force III support it, making overworld traversal more fluid and convenient. There’s also that racing game that just got translated to English, Choro Q Park.
Panzer Dragoon and Zwei support the 3D control pad, but you can’t move all the way to the corners, because they’re emulating the Mission Stick controls, which have a square gate.
I bought a Mission Stick mainly to play those games.
using a modern controller and setting it to mission stick in the OSD might work perfectly
Oh, cool
Oh yeah, Battle Garegga also supports full 3D control with the pad, but I still can’t decide if I prefer that over playing it with my arcade stick.
Later versions of Sega Rally support it, but that game already plays really well with the normal digital controller
The Japanese version of Need for Speed supports it. The one that’s a reskin with all Nissan cars.
can anyone here using a direct video to DAC test Die Hard Arcade for audio pop at the beginning of tracks
does anyone here not have a DAC lying around they can test?
clean as it should be
Soukyugurentai also works with the analogue input.
Stellar Assault SS
Also, Deep Fear controls completely differently (and better) with the 3D analog pad vs. the standard pad
Nights
Deep Fear with D-pad = Resident Evil tank controls
Deep Fear with analog stick = modern controls for sane people
I don't think Resident Evil controls are "insane".
Maybe you didn't play the game back in the day, and want to play it now because "retro is cool, bro", or something like that...
This has most likely been asked before, but is it possible to set unified controls for all the ST-V cores?
Not sure if asked for but a flip screen option would be nice like there is in the psx core as my main monitor only rotates one way and it's the wrong way for layer section
ManxTT
Powerslave
Outrun
is the analog pad supported on the core yet? Not been following recent updates
I’m being facetious.
With SNAC, yes
Except the analog triggers, of course…
Which games make use of analogue triggers?
Racing games, often
Even on the Saturn? That surprises me
People who like Resident Evil controls are insane, gottem
I actually like Resident Evil controls lol. People who complain about them are WEAK.
Tank controls, control movement based on the facing of the character. So pressing 'up' would always make your character move forward with regard to their own facing, and completely ignore your player camera view.
For those not following too closely, I think I figured out why there’s an audio blip for my set up while playing die hard arcade
it looks like any time direct video experiences a resolution change while audio plays. There is a momentary audio stutter.
happens on any core/game
Immediately noticeable when the PS1 boots
Is this just due to your particular setup?
I think it is explicitly the nature of this DAC
I’ve eliminated all other variables
if I use any of Mister binary - unstable or main.
Direct video has the audio issue
The retro castle DAC is five star rated by Kuro and I’ve always loved the picture
I guess I just never noticed the issue because I never really played that game too much
and when I got really into it, it was via the ST V
perhaps based upon how the core handles resolution changes it is more or less likely to happen
Or maybe a cheaper dac would care less and maintain audio
having an odd "error" core will always tell me the drive door is open, but there is no option to close it. any clues? tried the latest unstable and the version that is in the (latest)update all.
The only time the core should tell you that the disc lid is open is when the core boots
Perhaps you’ve screwed up the bios
And it needs to be named correctly
yes, i'm using all stuff which has worked up until today after I did an update
Delete your config and set it up again
configs are not downloaded, they are generated if they don't exist when you run the core.
Could it also be the display? Because some displays handle the resolution change better?
Also, I think is exactly the stuff zakk was looking at before he fell down an interlaced hole
It could be exactly something to do with interlaced now I think about it
Zakk, iirc, was looking at making that res change (specifically) better on mister
but I don’t think it’s my display because if I plug the mister directly into a TV or extract the audio to speakers or listen to the output from the TINK5x it’s the same
Just direct video? Or normal video too?
tell you something this is one way to spend my time off work.
heheh
Only with direct video and only with interlaced output, does the issue occur
maybe sonic2 2player on the Megadrive will do the same thing
Ok. Let me order another audio dac from Amazon, and I’ll test on my non av system direct video mister
But if it’s the hiccup I’m thinking of, it’s been there forever
Interesting that it doesn’t happen with diehard arcade STV
Does it happen with Dino crisis?
no luck with that one unfortunatly
Does it not let you load games?
yes
Because it will report the drive door open on boot
i get the boot screen and then goes straight to the CD menu
Yep, that’s correct. And then when you select a cd image, does it stay there or does the core reboot?
What’s your bios and what is it called?
hi saturn 1.003
What am I looking for specifically in Dino crisis?
I’m not experiencing any audio drop outs when going between menu and game
maybe certain resolution changes or certain audio prompts starting during the resolution change are more rough than others on the DAC
fwiw no issue with sonic two on mega Drive either
Weird
Delete the bios and have update all grab one.
crazy even that does not the trick
Is this with every game?
What kind of files are you using?
Do you have a spare SD card that you could test a clean install?
CHD format. tried all regions
I try with another SD card and see how this goes
ok the other card works on the first try
Both the same speed rating?
Dac coming today. This afternoon, science will be done
i'll give it a try! 3d pad mode is really what we would want to use with wheel and pedals on this core whenever possible though. cannot bind button presses to my pedals, which would be needed in the standard wheel mode.
ive got some free time this weekend to test a bit more. I'll try my saturn light guns again also, those didnt work last time I tested them with SNAC in the core either
using snax?
yep
ayo, just realized
Dual shock works with Panzer Dragoon Zwei
as a full on Twin Mission Stick
Now that’s a hefty discount for analog
yeah, getting a pair of those in the wild now is easily a $200+ affair
I was able to map it for Bulk Slash too.
What settings do you use for it?
ah yes, nose buttons
OSD, input1 set to twin mission stick
ah neat, just mapping the analog sticks as dpad inputs
also for Zwei i merely set the DS5 to;
face buttons = a b x y
l1 r1 = z c
l2 r2 = L R
the analog stick were already set to what they needed to be
Hope you finished all the other English translation patches lately because another one just came out! Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon is the latest Saturn fan localization — get the details in my story:
https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2025/05/05/english-patch-released-for-waku-waku-puyo-puyo-dungeon/
Oh wow, another translation! 😍
I remember getting stuck at the Harpy boss fight, because she would keep spamming these song attacks that effects the entire floor.
@winter phoenix is there any reason why so many Saturn translations have been released lately?
Like new developer tools or something?
It's basically a mixture of new tools making it easier to modify and examine the files for SEGA Saturn games, emulation for SEGA Saturn greatly improving, and mods for the original hardware making it easier to play games. All this means there's more interest in SEGA Saturn, including making translation patches for the (many) games that never got released outside of Japan.
What a time to be alive
Exactly. I don't even care that modern gaming mostly sucks. The retro commit gives me new gems all the time
exactly why im still playing these gems
there arent many new translation tools (lots of great homebrew ones though!) ; the main reason for more translations is more people getting into it and more knowledge being found and spread.
the more translations the better
I’m the opposite! the less translations the better. Will force people to learn a new language.
-_-
lol
does the default Saturn core utilize dual ram if present? Or do you have to launch the latest unstable build for that?
There is a dual ram build if you want dual ram
By default the dual ram build is not distributed through the official MiSTer update script
We’re thinking of ways of automating that process in the future but if you want dual ram you’ll need to download it yourself for the time being,
ok, thanks!
If I play Radiant Silvergun and then try to load another disc, it won't load until I reboot. Does that happen to someone else?
yeah it happens to me randomly
If I were to assume it’s like you popped in another disc while playing Radiant Silvergun
No but its always recommended to reset the mister if you change a game
You’d have to reboot the system in order to play the new game
I’m guessing here anyways
even when the games are in their own folders and the core resets on load it can still not load the new game
I've had to unmount, reset, then reload the game sometimes
well for single disk games its recommended and i do so... For multi disk games .. if its says insert disk two i insert disk two
and dont have any trouble... Like Final Fantasy PSX or similar stuff
The issue occurs more for me on the Saturn
I can eventually get the games to run at least
Just a mild annoyance
And there really isn't a reproducible pattern
I usually just swap games on the OSD. Found it weird that the problem only happens after Radiant Silvergun specifically.
lol I forgot what dumb bullshit I typed this time:
lol I’m kidding I love translations
great home screen 😍
I'm guessing it was this one...
...the one with all the reactions. 😉
Damn... used up all my snark of the day with one comment. I need to pace myself.
Are you using the latest stable? It's pretty old now, and the core has improved a lot since then
latest Dual RAM
shrew: tamed
Thank you for taking one for the team
This is the Robbiest lock screen imaginable. Perfect 👌
Is there a game that requires dual ram? I saw there's a Saturn core for dual ram.
(Got my 2nd ram coming today so wanted a few things to test it. I already have the 2nd memtest)
There are a bunch that work better with dual ram
Some (all?) of the 3D fighting games - Slowdown on single RAM
Pyon Pyon Kyaruru no Mahjong Biyori -- Has corrupt intro on single RAM
Grandia - Graphical issues on single RAM
I think there are some others too, but I can't remember them
sweet ty
Just found that game compatibility Google doc thingy.
Can anyone test and validate games? I might do a playthrough of Resident Evil 1 (and complete it). I wouldn't mind doing that playthrough with the Saturn port.
I could even try the Japanese version too. I noticed that completed games are highlighted in green.
Yeah, anyone can test and validate games
Sweet. I've actually not played the Saturn port of Resident Evil (Well in my case Biohazard)
I do know there's a few extras and differences.
(and generally the Japanese versions of Resident Evil are easier)
Damn, I'm surprised on how good Biohazard looks on the Saturn.
the saturn was a beast for “3d” and “2d”
and this lands beautifully between both camps
edited to point out that 2d and 3d are mostly marketing terms
Thankfully you can check the keys and see what specific key it is.
Otherwise I'd have to get the translator out. (Or try every locked door)
Is this core already the best way to play Saturn games without a Saturn console?
Yes
Question for all my Saturn gamers.
Should I have anything selected for the Cartridge option? Like rom/dram/backup/none
I may be wrong but I think the games will prompt you if its required
I think there are incompatibilities with some options but I’ve left mine on the 4mb cart for months and haven’t had issues.
By incompatibilities I mean like original hardware issues with some games.
Honestly I'm so inexperienced with the Saturn.
Cheers boss. Thank you.
The Saturn is a cool console. It's full of surprises. I just discovered the secret smooth 60 frames option in the japanese version of Outrun. Thanks to the game challenge thread.
It's so smoooth!!
I'm leaving it on the 4MB DRAM as default.
And change it to the option for the games asking for something else.
There is an interesting blog post on that topic, think it was linked here at some point. Something about using the wrong sized cart for some games having an adverse effect but I can't find it.
And this is now my canonical mental picture of Robby
Try getting killed by plant 42 when you get there, it squeezes Chris/Jill in half on the JP saturn version
Haha, will do!
gotta take care with your ink ribbons iirc - saturn version has the least ribbons of any version
Whoa whoa. Making Robby feel important around here is strictly forbidden!
Yeah, he definitely does not need any assistance with that.
Isn’t the Saturn version a slightly enhanced port of the PS1 original?
It's a weird one
If we compare it to the first release of Resident Evil on the PS1. It has slightly more content I believe. It has a battle mode and a suprise towards the end of the game. Unfortunately, you can notice the downgrade in visuals and audio (not bgm) compared to the PS1
I thought the Saturn version had slightly higher poly models
It might do? I just feel like the PS1 just had better clarity with the visuals aswell as the sounds.
I also could be full of shit lol. It’s what I thought I read but I never played the Saturn version to compare.
The Saturn version actually has higher quality backgrounds than the ps1 version
the saturn version definitely has different models for the player character and enemies etc
Yeah, it's more different than it is "worse" in my opinion.
Oh that is a suprise.
Slightly higher quality but still 😁
Actually the bgms sound slightly different too. Listen to the track when the first zombie attacks you and Barry in game, and you’ll hear it. And note that the ost uploads on youtube are just the psx ost with the battle mode music added in, so you’re gonna have to check in-game
Ahh I didn't know there was that many technical differences between the Saturn and PSX port. I only knew about the content differences. So it is a welcome suprise.
That is pretty cool.
Just about to go outside (found the 4 medallions) with 15 ink ribbons to spare.
Been playing Shienryu S-TV via RT4K with Pramod's ST-V profile and it looks absolutely stunning.
My crappy photo can't do it justice.
What is that "ST-V" profile?
Possibly a video preset, is my guess
But the st-v trash can cabinets had one of the worst wells gardner monitors so if it looks stunning they’ve done goofed
Using the Tink’s rotation or did roTATE get added to the core recently?
Aah, a Reteotink preset. Makes sense, I guess
Using the tink. I'm not sure if rotate has been added to the core. I don't think so. Not yet anyway
Well idk about that..plus it's all dependent on setups and of course it's also subjective
Yeah U2000 chassis didn’t make a great picture compared to its contemporaries
Early poly stuff probably was helped by it like the only popular game in this market, Die Hard
and to a lesser extent Remix though I personally never saw a Remix in the wild only Die Hard
Kind of surprised the cabinets weren’t more popular since they must’ve been cheap to make and buy but arcades were on the way out in the US so probably why
It’s a Rubbermaid trash can and a low grade WG monitor 😅
I was completely out of arcade gaming at this time so I never played any of them. There were very few arcades left in my part of the UK at that time. Plus I was travelling a lot at that time too.
I don't remember arcades as a child (UK). I think they were more prominent in seaside towns?
So I missed all the arcade craze.
Yeh I'm probably older by the sound of it, my local town had one arcade mostly jamma cabs and the kind of place that as a young kid you ran the risk of getting robbed.
Most good arcade memories are from Holiday/seaside resorts.
Such as 87 ISH in Cornwall - sit in Outrun, Afterburner and Space Harrier.
I have noticed there's a few "retro specialist bars" though. Which is pretty cool.
Yeah you are.
I just haven't really came across any bar seaside towns, in amusements.
Yeh there is one actually close to me never been in yet. Lol
Also I keep on planning to visit the various Arcade Club branches particularly Bury and Leeds. But I never seem to make the time. Maybe this summer.
Yeah we got a few barcades in Dallas, they’re cool
Shit, maybe I go to one for my birthday
I've been to a few and they are decent. I normally keep back a token as a souvenir.
ArcadeClubs are supposed to be great. They the pay to get in then free play model
They suck on the weekends when all the kids are there
Is there places like this in the states too
Arcade Club is Europe’s largest free play video and pinball arcade. More than 1000 well maintained classic arcade machines in our ever expanding library. Three exciting locations: Bury in Manchester, Leeds and Blackpool, all with modern and classic games to explore. Once inside all games are free to play! We have family-friendly venues with a ...
I’m unfortunately the type of person who will give up my game immediately if a kid wants to play it lol
As far as I know that’s the prevailing type of “barcade” here. Pay for unlimited play.
the actual "barcades" are not pay for unlimited
maybe other people are doing it that way and naming themselves in a way to not get sued tho
Oh nevermind, then I don’t know the difference
I dunno about the locations outside of NYC, but the original "Barcades" here tend to be more pinball focused. I mean, they have some classic arcade stuff too but they still manage to stuff a buttload of pins in
Oh it’s the an actual name of a chain
and obligatory Pacman battle royale cab
I meant it as literally an arcade with a bar
unlimited play+bar seems like a weird move. you can probably milk more money out of people not doing that
the ones i've been to had like a tokens system
the tokens were pretty cheap, i think its mainly just a way to keep people from hogging machines all night
We have both here. My favorite in the area is called “freeplay” (there’s one in Worcester and Providence) You pay $12 for unlimited
So obviously they make all their money selling drinks
That's cool but how's the game going?
Hey it's going absolutely fine
Now I think I encountered one bug
I picked up a note and I just tried to get out of it fast. The top part of the screen showed a bit of static. Like a bar of static.
It just appeared and went
But everything is fine so far
(I am using the dual ram unstable build with the normal main mister)
I also like the Saturns way of implementing transparency.
I think it's quite quirky
An update on that wheel situation, @inner token:
The latest test build from april has the wheel mode properly working for me. 3D pad still missing the gas/brakes but otherwise has all other buttons and the wheel working also.
Still cannot get the saturn light gun to work with SNAC though, tried two different older SNAC variants I have, v1 & v3 from misteraddons. Didn't work with either. I'll try my saturn controller with SNAC next when I have time to see if that works, at least.
Has also happened when I went through a door.
Resolution change?
Nah, there hasn't been any Resolution changes reported by my TV. Its only happened on 1 door and 1 file. It's also very brief and fast.
But so far it's been amazing
Quick Saturn core question. I booted up Sakura Wars 1 and the option to save is greyed out. I haven't touched the Saturn core in awhile, do I need to set up a virtual memory card in the core in order for games to save?
nah
so, have you updated everything?
cause the moment you get to a save point in a game, making a profile in an rpg for example, you should be able to commit the save to the sd card
or just turn on auto saving once you boot a game
Did a full update_all. Saving in game is still greyed out. I must have some setting off I assume
including autosave
Yup, autosave is on
I worked my way back to the first save screen, and its still greyed out
I am on the latest unstable saturn core, so maybe thats the culprit?
so you’ve made a save in one of the 3 save slots, and the mister osd didn’t show saving for a second?
Yes. Just save in the game itself first. Then it should show up in the core OSD.
Thats the issue, it won't let me save in game. The save screen has 'save' greyed out, like its wanting a memory card plugged into the system
wel it’s not a core stable/unstable issue
Yea, thats what I am figuring. It worked fine on an older core
Have you tried saving in a different game?
Yea, I've had no problems in other games on this build
the screen with the Status, Save & Resume option?
hmm might want to ask the Shiro! discord they would know more intimately about the game
Thanks. I will give them a holler and see if someone has come across that issue before
Just beat Yawn part 2. (About 5 mins after beating Plant 42, so I'm back in the mansion)
boom, You've basically caught up with where I am on Director's Cut's arrange mode
Are you doing Jill's campaign or Chris'?
Jill
(but it's slightly easier too as I'm playing the Japanese version of the game)
Oh right, I forgot the JP version is easier than the EU/US versions
More ink ribbons etc?
Yeah, I think? I'm getting 3 per pickup, and I have around 17 now I think? (Saved around 4 or 5 times)
I think there should be less zombies (I do know this is a thing with Resident Evil 2 and Biohazard 2)
And maybe health of zombies too?
I'm getting the standard 15 rounds of handgun ammo aswell as 7 shotgun shells for the ammo pickups
maaaybe. I'm not sure about the zombie count (as far as I remember there is no difference between the EU version and the JP version I play nowadays, but then again, it's been very long since i played the EU version), but it's very likely they could have changed the health of the zombies
From what I know the US version doesn't have auto aim
Can't remember if EU has it or not
At around the 17min mark. He talks about the Dreamcast port of Resident Evil 2. He then goes to talk about how the Japanese versions are easier and shows a segment where there's less zombies compared to US/PAL. (Although, it is about Resident Evil 2)
Here is something that I don't think has been done before: a showcase of unique in-game content among ALL versions of Resident Evil 2! This took a lot of work and a lot of play, so I hope you enjoy it! Let's go crazy!
Note: Deadly Silence was released in 2006. Sorry for the error.
Anthony Quintana's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/use...
I don't remember my old PS1 version of the game having auto aim.
I have all the RE games on GameCube for some reason lol
Indeed! Yeah I was thinking about RE1, but I didn't know about the number of zombies being increased for the overseas releases of RE2. Interesting!
They're good ports and come on cool small discs, what's there not to love?
That was my thought process too, but like, why do I have this lol
hahaha
having all of the classic REs plus RE4 on one system is pretty neat though
(minus OG RE1)
Bar the PC. I think they are the best ports on console.
(can't really talk about OG1, but Remake is good)
I just got into buying cube games for a few years and couldn’t pass those up
And now I have flippydrive
And those games remain untouched now lol
I went out of my way to get black label copies of all the REs on PS1 and now...mostly play on xstation, MiSTer or the PC versions lol
They look nice on the shelf at least I guess
@burnt matrix
does that even work fully on the core?
It coins, we can go in game, we can honk but it seems to miss analog input to brake and accelerate
I opened a ticket for it
sound works also
ahh the triggers
it uses the same mame input map as some other safari game
PORT_BIT( 0x01, IP_ACTIVE_LOW, IPT_BUTTON3 ) PORT_NAME("Winch")```
not sure it is analog
although mame may just have it wrong. if I didn't generate an mra from it it means it isn't in the software list so it's probably jacked up in mame anyways
sw1 sw2 and sw3 mapped to button
there is this commentary also in Mame
GAME( 1997, wwshin, stvbios, stv, wasafari, stv_state, init_stv, ROT0, "Sega", "Waku Waku Shinkansen (J 971031 V0.002)", MACHINE_NOT_WORKING | MACHINE_NO_SOUND | MACHINE_IMPERFECT_GRAPHICS ) // needs inputs
yeah, I dunno why they attached wasafari input init to it
a crank is like a throttle I guess
so can you control it via snac?
unlikely
hmm, darn. not in mednafen either
What is the screen of input of Safari to see if it is different ?
it is completely different. two switches and 'winch' that is 'off' so probably also a switch
he made port comparisons of RE1 later and I don't recall anything about thinning out zombies for japanese market
i think in RE1 the difficulty differences come from enemy HP and ammo/ribbon quantities mainly
its generally too cramped to add additional enemies anyway
Woah
Something strange happened
I was expecting to fight the Helicopter Tyrant with the timer.
Didn't happen. I compared footage to someone's longplay and they had the bossfight
Bit anti climatic
But yeah, for that game compatibility list. Whoever updates it. You can say Biohazard has been completed (well Jill playthrough of course)
Was a lot of fun
I forgot how bad the voice lines were.
Also the mansion didn't blow up and I had a post credit tyrant scene
Ahh. I forgot to save barry, seems that's the reason why my ending was slightly different
Oh well
It's been a very long time since i played and completed Resident Evil 1
You didn't trust Barry
||you monster||
jk it happens
I always do the runs with all MO disks inserted so I don't even remember what happens if you don't rescue ChrisJill
THANK YOU
All I need in life, I will honk and smile
HONK
HEY how do you have a gradient
he's on fire
what is going on
I don’t know what’s wrong with my name, are you seeing that too
you have ascended
(all the mods have gradients now)
Too bad that you can’t use custom images for the server tag. I would roll with a MisterKun proudly

I’m that guy now
Lmao
I’m a discord plebe, half the shit time happens I’m like “oh okay”
Hey, at least you got his polaroid pic with his wife and two daughters!
Or was it one daughter?
I can't remember myself and I only just beat the game a few hours ago haha.
Haha fair enough 😂
it's daughters plural
I think what Peter meant was did the photo include one daughter or 2 of them.
And based on the in game photo. It's 2
I wonder which one said the iconic line ||GO JUMP ON A DILDO BOSS||
Die Hard was the main game used for those cabs. Shienryu was most likely connected to an Astro and many Japanese candy cabs at the time.
Fair point, not sure what an STV tink profile would be still given that means it would have been MS8s, MS9s, 2931, etc
(insert all other contemporary candy cabinet monitors)
Maybe that profile had settings for rotate? Not sure, I'm curious to try.
I havent tried Tink4k rotate function yet. Maybe that profile integrates all that and some?
Sorry to anyone looking forward to homebrew contest results this weekend https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2025/05/09/segaxtreme-homebrew-competition-results-delayed-to-may-17/
Have we heard from SRG at all? Like has zet spoken to them? I only ask because he’s been quiet and lives in Not One Of The Best Places In The World™
he responded to a github issue yesterday, he's fine
@mortal mist Sorry for the ping but I saw that in regards to adding information to the game testing sheet, we should contact you.
A few days ago I did a full playthrough of Biohazard 1. (Well just Jill) and I completed it. If you wanted to update the sheet, then your more than welcome 🙂
I did get 1 bug though. Out of all the doors and files I've picked up and went through. 3 or 4 times I had a small static horizontal bar on the top of the screen. It was very brief. I was using the dual ram Saturn unstable core with the normal main mister.
You sure that isn't just junk data that is meant to be obscured by overscan?
Just want to double check since sometimes glitches like that are intentional.
thanks, I should have checked there first
Please send a request for access to the sheet, you will be able to add your test results. As for the error you saw in my opinion it is an overscan area and you can't see it on the crt. You can use the horizontal crop option in that case.
if it happens so rarely, it will be hard to reproduce it
He is fine, working quietly.
You know what I think your correct with the overscan so I won't report the bug.
When I get some spare time il request access to the sheet.
Yeah it happened very rarely. With the amount of files and doors I went through, it was a total of 4 or 5 times I saw it.
“SRG”?
Saturn core developer
that’s grim, not knowing who makes the cores you play
that’s one of the big differences between this scene and the “retroarch community”
Saturn Rcore Gdeveloper
And snes, segacd, Battletoads, uh random other contributions. Also sadly 3DO in the future 😉
I got in like a month ago.
Is that the guy that made Cube Cat?
I noticed that Cube Cat wasn't in the Saturn homebrew contest this year
Ah, 7shades made the Seniriu Terrain Demo
he helped with it, yeah. a lot of us were surprised there was no CubeCat this year
Hopefully he's cooking something good
@warped saddle, is it possible to add hiscore saving to both trap15 STGs?
oh, yeah.
Happy 30th anniversary in North America, Sega Saturn! The community that's played and loved the Saturn for three decades is an enduring symbol of the console's success:
The Sega Saturn is a success story.
Thirty years ago today, the Saturn arrived on North American shores on May 11, 1995. Over the next three years, fans enjoyed a library of nearly 250 games.
As we rang in the new year in 1999, those games had largely disappeared from store shelves, and the Saturn’s story could have ended there — but it d...
Saturn found success in death
I see a lot of success for the Saturn in Japan. It was a manager in the US who was so reluctant in accepting it that it never had a chance to be widely accepted in the west.

The Saturn was really close to the Genesis in the number of released games and with more trust from the USA would easily have trumped that.
Estimated number of GBA borders: 10,001
Wii U so trash that it doesn't even chart.
and I somehow own 2... 👀
Wii U is a great system just because you can hack it and have all the games
I wish the list had Game.com and RCA Studio 2 just so I can laugh and the number of games they have.
And the Gizmondo, and the Tapwave Zodiac
good luck finding a Wii-U to buy though
Still easy in UK and US at least, tend to be £$50-90 for a working set
can’t do 240p tho 😞
The games are widescreen why would you wanna
Yeah I tossed my Wii to charity thinking it was redundant
ps3 was a bit more locked into widescreen
Hadn’t used either in quite a while and didn’t realize there was no way to get native 240p from a wiiU
Yeah I guess if you wanna play Wii or Gamecube games on a CRT
I found a Wii, Wii-U and a 2nd gen PS3 in the trash a few years ago. Guess which one I didn't take? haha
Wii U is worth owning if only for the HD remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess
I think the Wii U is pretty cool. Wouldn’t recommend anyone to buy one but I enjoyed the Nintendo games on it
Despite my WiiU being a Zelda model I never once beat Wind Waker HD
didn’t like it
i have a modded Wii U and the only downside is how clunky the OS is. It takes like 5 minutes to launch the OS and select a game
The Switch by comparison is amazing. Takes like 5 seconds to open a game
But the Wii U is worth modding if you want to play the Wii and GC libraries
The UI sucks, but the even bigger issue is that the gamepad has a battery life of about 2 hours and atleast both that i've owned seems to suck battery even when its in idle / turned off so you have to have a charger close by 24/7
It's horrible. My battery lasts like 30 mins to an hour and it has to constantly be plugged in
The pro controller has insane battery life on the other hand instead which is kinda ironic
It's pretty cool to mod the Wii U, but what isn't talked about is that it's a nightmare getting everything set up properly. It takes so much research and so many hours to get everything right
you can get bigger batteries for the wiiU gamepad iirc
Probably a good thing to do if you're invested into the system for sure
like nintendo cheaped out at the last second, the bay can take a much larger battery
I'm gonna play Burning Rangers with my new 3D controller that I bought because of this chat, never used one before so I hope its worth the money
got a snac adapter and voltage changer?
i don't think i've ever finished a saturn game ... huh
speaking of
Ye I have both a SNAX64 and an Adapt, not sure if the 3D controller works with the adapt tho
And it's also got some Taiko no Tatsujin games
got a nicer level shifter
it should with snax and the necessary cable
Ye I recently bought the cable so I believe its the "improved" version whatever that means
those are just much more reliable for lightguns afaik
Fair enough, I just use a Guncon 1 with the Adapt for my light gun usage. A bit cheaper than buying a lightgun for every platform and also reduces the space necessity
Every time I boot up the Saturn core it’s as if my mind requires me to do a lap in Sega Rally first lol
Game over yeah!!
No games worth buying that aren’t on the switch?
The greatest sounding failure ever
There are some great games on the Wii U that didn't get ported to the Switch
The hardware and games are for the most part really cheap right now, but I imagine in ten years time they will be way more expensive as people go back and revisit it
Twilight Princess and Wind Waker remastered
As is always the way 😔
Splatoon
Wait until there’s a YouTuber that does something about Wii U hidden gems
Whatever the 3D Mario was, Galaxy?
I still think it's funny that the first time I ever played Breath of the Wild was the Wii U version.
It wasn't bad.
Zombie U was cool
None on Wii U, right?
I enjoy the NES Remix games still.
3D LandWorld that came out on switch
I played BOTW on Wii U, it played great
Quite a lot did wind up getting ported over but there are still great games on there that didn't
Zombie U, Splatoon and the Zeldas are the games I know of
Also probably a Yoshi game
Kirby as well?
Possibly
The Rainbow Curse one?
Maybe Ninty will rerelease them at the end of the Switch 2 lifecycle
I think there's a hint that Rainbow Curse will either be ported or remastered for the Switch (2), but as of right now it's still tied to the Wii U.
I know this was supposed to be good games, but I am surprised Color Splash never got brought over to Switch
The fact that they showed off the GC version of Wind Waker in their announcement of the Switch 2 was baffling and suggests there are no plans right now to rerelease the remastered version
Poor Devils Third, no one remembers that Masterpiece
Forgot about Wooly World.
Speak for yourself 😏
I only remember because of the cute amiibo
- Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
- Yoshi's Wooly World (if you don’t want to play on 3DS)
- Twilight Princess HD
- Wind Waker HD
I could list more but I think those are the only safe bets
And games that weren’t superseded by an improved sequel
Like Mario Maker and Splatoon
Oh yeah Wind Waker HD
Improved sequel isn’t a thing
I mean, it is, but they’re never replacements
It saddens me that Splatoon 2 can be kinda dead now Splatoon 3 is out, for example
Personally I’d never play the original Splatoon again
(Those games should always just copy over the old maps)
Or the original Mario Maker
Well the 3DS Mario Maker I would because it included a ton of user maps due to lack of online
excuse me, this is sega saturn
I’ll remember that in 2065 when you’re playing it on the MiST4r
Yeah, damn mods
Wait... I thought this was Nintendo Saturn.
Splatoon is definitely worth getting for the single player campaign that as far as I am aware want ported over
Yeah, Splatoon 1 had an amazing final boss fight. And no, it was never ported over.
Anyway, I've said it before, but Yoshi's Woolly World alone is worth keeping a Wii U on hand. The 3DS version just isn't as good.
3D World
Land was 3DS
I couldn’t remember. One of them 😅
I wish people did romhacks of Sonic World to make new levels.
Almost all the basics of a 3d platformer engine are there!
what's Sonic World
Sonic World is the 3d Sonic section in Sonic Jam
the one that created hope for a future that never came
Dunno, it’s genuinely really cool though.
This is the music that plays when you run out of lives in Sonic 1.
In my head canon it is more of a we cannot sell ports of the old games, dammit
looking at the footage, it seems the downfall of that engine would be that it lacks depth, it's all mainly on a big plane
whereas 2d sonic makes use of height a lot
I’m ok with that.
yeah
To be fair, jumping and positioning is pretty awful on a lot of early 3D platformers
The best you can hope for is decent shadows
I'm sure the Saturn could do better, but complexity becomes an issue once you can see "deep" onto multiple layers of platforms
I guess sonic adventure did it right
it's not like the old games and more like an obstacle course in "real" environments
Sonic adventure did a huge amount right
Especially the music 😎
The story was pretty great too
The worst thing- “Dr Eggman”
they did well to bring in elements of the cartoon character dynamics
I thought Sonic World was built on the same engine as NiGHTs, and it was Yuji Naka who nixed the idea of SoA using the engine to make a Sonic game.
what's wrong with egg man
"Dr. Robotnik" is an objectively better name than "Eggman" and I will die on that hill.
what if he was Robert Nicholas Eggman
And the enemies were called badniks
Well I guess he's officially Dr. "Eggman" Robotnik.
That’s how they kept us all happy 😅
Since his grandfather was canonically Gerald Robotnik.
gerald
Best 3 Saturn games - go!
I'm still surprised they used the Robotnik name in the movies.
They're all better than they have any right to be, even the first one.
I liked the Mario movie too though
The Mario movie was also better than it should have been.
Especially considering Crisp Rat as Mario.
Bonk movie next
It wouldn't surprise me. They're gonna make movies of everything now that TLOU and Sonic and Mario have proven there's a market.
qbert
We'll see if OutRun is any good.
I saw Until Dawn the other day. It was… as bad as I expected
Ah I was right
There's a hidden "play as Sonic" mode in Christmas NiGHTS. It is... Not very good.
Maybe one day a really late version of xtreme will be out in the wild
(I know there are some things out there, but nothing very late afaik)
i’m glad sonic got sidelined so the team could go off and do other things, Ristar included
Saturn is bursting with IP that came into being on that platform
every nintendrone who can’t shut up about DKC or Yoshi’s Island should be made to play Clockwork Knight & Astal
There needs to be a Gunstar Heroes movie.
Maybe even a Metal Slug movie, complete with plenty of rawkit lawnchas.
can jack black be the hostages
No, but he'll say "Rawkit Lawncha!"
...
then only mild chuckles...
Then he'll be some schmo working at a box factory.
Thanks I hate it
You're welcome
Thank you!
I love it!
The Arnold toupee is just
Old Stallone is giving me the heebie jeebies
Though it might be because I have watched 41 Stallone movies since March
Let's go uh, Zooey Deschanel as Fio and Margot Robbie as Eri
It did not do so well with Margot Robbie
Zooey felt like a shoe-in, so I'm glad that worked. Emily Blunt might be better for Eri - in fact, it kind of weirdly looks like it decided to throw Emily Blunt in there instead lol
man though, we've come a long way from Will Smith eating spaghetti, haven't we
They have all new Will Smith eating spaghetti
Sly's gun sight is something unique
So are the guns in Metal Slug!
fair enough!
English patch for Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom Sega Saturn.
Patch created using Delta Patcher 3.1.5
Dump from Redump.
I only tested it with Fenrir ODE (Real Saturn) and with Kronos Emulator.
For those who test/play using the Saturn CD-Drive...
is that a saturn port of the arcade game?
Yes
So this translation is awesome but if you have a MiSTer you already have access to the arcade game in English.
that was what i was wondering about, thanks for confirming
might still have a look out of curiosity
I need to see with the translator, there are some grammar errors and a typo during my gameplay.
There is a message inside the game where it should say : "you have lost your boost of speed", instead we have "you have lost your boots of speed".
Otherwise, the translation is interesting and should help people playing that game.
huh, boots of speed sounds like an actual dnd item
Okay, it's inside the lore, so no typo.
And the grammar errors are just plain "Ye olde" English.
I just posted my story on that, I wrote it last night!
https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2025/05/13/english-patch-for-dd-tower-of-doom-is-out-now/
The script was taken directly out of the officially localized arcade game, so it isn't a new translation
You absolutely could just play the arcade one on MiSter, but then you wouldn't be playing Saturn as Segata Sanshiro intended, so...
We used the same Saturn devkits at Core. One per team. Testers had the hardware address checker.
Earlier kits were the Sofia boxes from Japan. We had a protoype the size of a beer fridge with only one SH2. Alas, someone fried the mainboard by introducing it to 240V. It probably ended up in a skip.

Some of the Sega Ssturn equipment used for the never-released version of Descent from the Volition donation to The Strong.
Some Saturn devkits.
I can report that the Sega Film Tools tutorial worked and you can make custom Saturn video disks. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2sBPXbe18-k
The tutorial is here https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2024/07/05/create-your-own-saturn-video-discs-tools-and-tutorial/
excellent usage of the tools
how good is the core as a standin for a dev kit these days
All the homebrew I've tried works
Wait, movie core?
Yes, what movie core?
Wonder how it is vs VCD?
Playing ripped kung fu VCDs would be neat
MPEG1 is significantly better than Cinepak at the same bitrate
Here's a pretty good comparison https://colinmckellar.com/2024/01/11/video-encoder-comparison/
(VMAF score https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Multimethod_Assessment_Fusion on the y-axis, size on the x-axis)
The CD-i core will be the best movie core when they add support for the mpeg card.
looks like Brittney and Andrea from What's Good Games 😄
I kind of wonder how companies like the ones who made the specialized codecs for the Nintendo DS kept doing business now that everything uses standardized and open codecs mostly, or internalizes theirs.
In October 2011, Mobiclip[6] was bought by Nintendo and is now a subsidiary of the latter. Since then it is now known as "Nintendo European Research & Development" or "NERD".
Oh...
Haha wadda buncha NERDs
I hope you like the acronym.
Yeah it’s very clever
I know almost everyone there since years, some long before integrating NERD.
Dude that’s awesome!
Some time ago they recruited emulation experts and security researchers.
He's a NERD by association!
Git'em!
Symmetrical joystick layout and Saturn-style d-pad is actually what I've been looking for...
Jesus Christ
I really liked using my M30 for the Saturn core.
At some point il test and hopefully complete a few more games. So I can update the compatibility test sheet.
4 face buttons. I mean, I get it. It's obviously a Switch controller after all. But still...
Dual shoulder buttons too so it’s extra chunky up top
It's a DualChonk
Hey look, Sony hired the controller designers from the first Xbox
pixar mom controller
Thick thighs save lives
gimme that chonk
They've almost got it! So close!
could have swore i skipped past a madlittlepixel vid proclaiming this as the best controller ever, at least going by thumbnail
Damn.. I'm amazed SX is still around, I used to be active there like 25 years ago.. likely more actually, since the forum software was replaced at some point. I think I was even a mod for a while or something.
I sense a new release coming soon
Oh, I've posted my usb2saturn adapter over at SX. If anyone is feeling adventurous to try it out. I'm also planning to release the single 10p multitap adapter. Need to try it on the saturn core with snac.
Competition results livestream is starting now https://www.twitch.tv/emeraldnovagames
The results are in, and the winners of this year's SegaXtreme Saturn homebrew contest are racer Micro Motor Mayhem, the English translation of Mobile Suit Gundam and new software development kit Saturn Ring Library! Get the details here:
Rigged
I heard the Gundam guys paid you off to win.
lol sorry I shouldn’t joke about that stuff, someone might believe me
I had nothing to do with the judging! LoL
This is a great article, thanks for writing it and sharing it with us.
Thanks. I'll put the full rankings in it once Nova updates his site with them.
all this and more playable on your MiSTer
question, should SRG submit his core to the comp?
I think he could ... the only problem is that not every judge might have a MiSTer to test it out, though. It's worth asking Emerald Nova about
Hmm, I'm having trouble getting the Sakura Wars 2 English TL to boot on either the latest stable and unstable cores, despite the English TL of 1 and the original JP version of 2 loading just fine
it's giving me the "Drive Door Open" error
I just try to load the game and it goes to the CD player menu with "Drive Door Open"
and resetting from there just brings me back
sometimes a bad copy of the file can do that. sometimes just relaunch the core and game can get over that hump
and again, SW1 and the Japanese version of 2 load just fine, and I've tried both my own custom patched files and even tried a prepatched version found online, same result
yeah I'm really scratching my head here
I tried switching between regions but that didn't seem to help either
i use a region free patched JP 1.01 bios myself
But this shouldn’t be giving you an issue
I'm pretty sure that's the one I have, I've been able to play NTSC-U and NTSC-J games without issue
i hate to waste anyone’s time testing solutions,
if you had a spare sdcard to try with i’d recommend that
considering everything else works, games and cores alike, I'm not sure that'll be of much help
it's not the patched bin/cues either, I'm testing them out in Mednafen and they're working fine
only really to tell if a bad sector was on the card.
i just converted it with chdman and that boots 1st time too
so it's specifically this game, specifically on mister
erm, what’s your input set to?
i’d be shocked if this game had the Shinobi bug
but stranger things have happened
nah, boots with 2 pads set as default
okay now this is odd
so just to do some A/B testing, I put both my self-patched files and the prepatched downloaded files on there, and this time my self-patched ones worked
even though they didn't before
hmm
hate to post it
but occasionally it’s appropriate
god damn i love this opening song
anyhow I have another quick question
sure
how do I get SW2 to recognize my SW1 save on Mister
easy!
the games only share a save instance, if they’re kept in the same subfolder
if for example you have a folder called “kohran is best girl” and put all your sakura wars games in there, a save file with that folders name would exist
so, if you’ve already got a SW1 save you could just duplicate it and rename it to the folder for SW2
or just put the SW2 game into the SW1 folder
so I make a folder with the same filename as the SW2 bin/cue and put the SW1 save in it?
at first
