I didn’t know you remembered

I respect selfish reasons. Those are typically my favorite kind of reasons.

drowsy hull
#

after that robert had to implement sound and increase compile times. that's when I decided that fpga development is not for me

burnt matrix
#

not surprised!

drowsy hull
#

I mean, who has time for compiles taking 15-25 minutes? that's for people doing development in a structured compile-once way

#

or when being paid for it to have a valid 'it compiles' excuse for doing nothing

#

but that was enough self-adulation for the next five years.

The one time apple could have used non generic key combos to invalidate your attempt

fallow oracle
#

"so jae, how's the saturn core?"

#

Just a casual 1CC no worries

#

This is my first 1CC on this, sadly not deathless

#

It's also the easy route but shhh

gloomy hedge
#

especially if you arent using 30hz auto

#

with 30hz auto its even easier

#

but an arcade clear is an arcade clear! ggs!

fallow oracle
#

The two steps to all red wide is too many projectiles that you end up with too many gaps

gloomy hedge
fallow oracle
#

It does, but I've died too many times in previous plays that I'll sacrifice damage output for a more even spread

gloomy hedge
#

like this is 30 hz with the red shot and there aint no gap

gloomy hedge
fallow oracle
#

Yeah, it's the two stages prior to that rofl

gloomy hedge
#

this good enough for me tbh

fallow oracle
#

I have a HAS supergun for when I play on the F3, I do 15Hz typically but I might try setting up two buttons

#

One at 15, one at 30

gloomy hedge
#

or even this

gloomy hedge
#

30 is really good

#

its borderline broken

#

seriously it just melts shit

fallow oracle
#

It is rofl

gloomy hedge
#

it feels a little cheatery on abdhlqv but then on other routes it feels balanced haha

#

anything but the shotgaps in darius 1

#

good god, kill me now

fallow oracle
#

That's partially why I don't but also, there's the whole discourse on autofire anyways

gloomy hedge
#

shoots 4 bullets

#

(when can I fire again?)

fallow oracle
#

So it's like someone is always unhappy rofl

gloomy hedge
#

autofire is the most balanced for competition, and japanese cabinets had autofire circuits anyways

#

anyone who tries to hold that candle of "oh yeah autofire is cheating" is like " cool thanks advocate for carpal tunnel, byeee"

#

the only argument is " but we want to reward you for mashing harder than the otehr guy " in which case, go for it, but I dont value that and neither does the shmup community so its like go have that competition my guy, no one's stopping you, but we dont care to test that exact skill

#

#rantover lol

fallow oracle
#

Yeah, I agree with you on that

amber heart

Using a CHD did indeed fix the issue. Thanks!

Meh. Was hoping for something a little more with these so-called 'remasters' coming out for PS4/PS5. Don't get me wrong, I'm always excited to see anything Lunar-related... but the footage shown so far looked very underwhelming, little more than upscaled (and not very cleanly) PS1 versions.

My recommendation for anyone getting into the series is to play Professional on PS1, all the tracks from 1 & 2 with a far fairer difficulty compared to arcade.

burnt matrix
#

Yeah wasn’t counting PC since it’s not on MiSTer haha

#

Well, a non ao486 PC

#

I suggest the N64 one since it’s in English. Less of a learning curve if you don’t know Japanese.

floral saddle
#

Fair point, in which case I would go for professional on PS1 every time.

burnt matrix
#

Ehh, it doesn’t matter. People gonna play what they want.

#

Saturn is love, Saturn is life!

floral saddle
#

True, but the first 2 games have difficulty levels that can easily put people off the series for good.

burnt matrix
floral saddle
#

Professional was made with consoles in mind.

floral saddle
#

Its fantastic, my favourite in the series. Love the aesthetic of that era of densha.

hearty marten

Do you speak Japanese, Robby?

Still though, N64 one is unfortunately the only option for most people. Being in English is the biggest advantage, even over difficulty.

That is what I hope for aswell, of course. But srg320 having a hard time replicating it is a little bit worrying. I keep imagining that the further away he gets, code wise, from the point where the regression started, the harder it will be to remedy it, while keeping everything else intact.

# celest lake test builds usually aren't on github I don't think? (correct me if I'm wrong, bu...

Yep. Test builds aren’t usually on GitHub, they’re usually manually built and uploaded here into #test-builds

Unstable builds are automatically built with the CI pipelines in GitHub once there are new commits, so you could grab those from GitHub (see @warped saddle’s message for details). They’re also on discord, here: #unstable-nightlies

Test builds are usually manually built by a developer when they explicitly want to seek feedback.

Unstable builds are built automatically (sometimes the buildbot can fail for complex cores), and just reflect the most recent commit in the main branch for each core. The devs aren’t necessarily explicitly asking for feedback, but they’re helpful for e.g. the Saturn, where there’s a long time between official releases.

NB: a “release” is a blessed build which is manually committed to the releases directory of the repo. This one has been manually built by a developer. For more complex cores e.g. N64, PSX, this might have required many builds to find the one which gives the best timing/timing closure.

I hope that helps

warped saddle
#

you can grab unstable releases from github: in the unstable nightly repo for a given core they are publshed as a release

#

actually, there is one "release" and it publishes each build as an asset in that release

# serene thunder IIRC Saga was $100 new in stores

The worst thing and best thing about Saturn was it's unpopularity. It sucked for longevity of the console (though it did ok), but at the end all the toy stores sold off inventory for sub $5. My brother got most of his library at the end of life and he was working a convenience store job paying his own rent. It was so cheap he grabbed things that are hundreds now for 99 cents.
Also, I remember FF3/6 being $80 in store when I asked for it and getting an almost laughing 'no' about it . I can't imagine how loud that laugh would have been if I'd asked for a $100 game. The struggle was real.

I'm doing preservation works since 30 years, worked with almost all known teams, pushed some of them breaking the limits too.

I have once helped some projects like on the Pi systems, but I've seen some limits and I don't like working with pieces of EmulationStation here, RA there and such.
I've seen RA management destroying or trying to destroy people.

Keio 2 is one of the most significant on the sound department too.

I think there are still sound issues though, mainly on the CDDA side of things.

I know the inaccuracies on the CDDA was a known issue a while back.

#

Like some games have sound mixing issues where the audio is more quiet than it should be, typically stuff like vocal songs in the intros to certain games.

anyone else got themselves a snac adapter for saturn or did y’all accidentally pick up a snax version?

Anyone have an idea why SNAC isn’t working for me on the Saturn core?

Out of curiosity what light gun Saturn games is everyone excited for? I see a lot of Virtua cop but I can play that on my PS2. I really want to play HOTD but have heard the Saturn port is rough

it’s a little ugly sure but it plays well

wise brook

had a look on etsy, no joy there either

#

Mister Addons

inner token
#

are you using a blissbox saturn cable?

errant crown
#

It’s the one they sell at Mister Addons

inner token
#

ok that should work. another thing the connector can be funky so you might try not plugging the saturn peripheral all the way in.

errant crown
#

Gotcha

#

I did have a weird issue where it would randomly press Start without me doing anything

#

Does it only matter if SNAC is turned on in the core?

#

Or do I need to also disable Port 1 and 2?

inner token
#

just turn on snac and it should act as port 1 and detect whatever you have connected

#

what are you trying?

errant crown
#

Tried not plugging my controller all the way in

#

Setup looks like this

#

This time, without touching my controller, it automatically skipped the boot animation and the opening cutscene. Hmm.

#

Using the dual SDRAM core, if that makes any difference

inner token
#

what io board do you have? analog 6.1 has a jumper that might need set to io6 next to the user port.

#

on megadrive core start/c wouldn't work without that set for example

errant crown
#

Pfff can’t remember, got my DE10 nano in 2019 IIRC

#

Oh, IO board

#

That one’s a Digital IO board I got a couple years ago

#

I’ll check to see which one I have

#

I got my IO board in early 2022. Can’t find out what revision it is.

inner token
#

marking is probably under fan cable.

#

jumper is under led on digital i think

errant crown
#

My fan cable is unfortunately long gone, since I use a passively cooled case

#

Or, do you mean on that spot on the board?

#

OK, I’ll check

inner token
errant crown
#

Says it’s v1.2

#

The jumper is on that exact spot, too

inner token
#

ok you should be set and ready to go. The saturn cable should work with the single port snac or snax with a regular saturn pad if that's what you were trying.

errant crown
#

The one I’ve been using is a 3rd party one, the S-Bom Joycard

#

Dunno if that makes a difference

inner token
#

it could do something weird, maybe try others.

#

if you have genesis cable you could try it in MD core to confirm all io are working

errant crown
#

I unfortunately don’t, since I use my 8BitDo Genesis controller for that core. Hmm…

#

I do have a RetroBit Saturn controller, but I disassembled it and can’t find all the pieces

#

OK now, the up, left, and right buttons work

#

Interesting, L is read as Start, and the B button keeps automatically being pressed

#

Lemme check my Saturn 3D pad

#

Saturn 3D pad doesn’t work

#

@inner token What adapter do you use?

visual grove
# errant crown It’s the one they sell at Mister Addons

SNAC should be fine, it’s the SNAX line with multi controller support that needs a modification to work but they can work as well: https://misteraddons.com/blogs/news/saturn-stunner

MiSTer Addons

Courtesy of srg320, and SNAC developer blue21, the MiSTer FPGA Saturn beta core received support for the Stunner/Virtua Gun light gun. To my surprise, users were having issues with SNAX, SNAX64, and MiSTercade Remote V2, but didn't have issues with the original SNAC or MiSTercade Remote V1. After some investigation and consultation with blue21...

merry raptor
#

The Saturn core seems to have made some impressive progress last time I checked.

visual grove
#

Err and to be clear you won’t get multi gun with SNAX even after the fix

#

Not enough pins for snac + segas implementation makes it not doable

inner token
#

i tried snax with regular pad, he's just talking about stunner working with snax there

errant crown
visual grove
#

I buy all my passives from digikey so probably where I’ll order them when I get around to it. But I placed an order yesterday with them so bad timing 😅

#

Might wait until I have a couple more things to get because of ship

#

It’ll be like pennies worth of resistors and then $10 shipping

inner token
#

I'm glad he wrote that up though for people with snax who want to use stunner.

visual grove
#

Yup it’s clear info for anyone who can do it.

inner token
#

there's a controller test rom @errant crown I'd say mess with the connection, leave a mm or 2 gap between controller adapter and saturn peripheral while running that.

#

3d pad has been reported working

errant crown
#

Cool, thanks. I’ll test when I get back home.

tiny flare
#

I’ve been using the single port SNAC from MiSTerAddons, which works perfectly for the Virtua Gun

#

Previously I was using their 2-port SNAX which was working fine for regular and 3D pad, but yeah doesn’t work for the virtua gun

errant crown
#

@inner token Thanks for sharing that file! Apparently with Snax at least, the controller port has to be at a very specific sweet spot, or otherwise it won’t read or just mess up all the buttons. I’ve gotten it to recognize my 3D pad, but haven’t gotten any of the buttons to work yet.

tiny flare
#

Oh I should mention when I ordered the SNAC I also grabbed one of the improved Saturn dongles (it calls this out on the store page now). Checks out, it really is improved, no need to wiggle the controller port around to get it to make good contact anymore

warm mica
#

Is there a script to update Saturn core with the latest unstable build?

errant crown
#

I think this is gonna replace my console soon, at least for the most part. Not having to deal with the finicky cartridge slot and getting per-game saves is a huge plus.

#

Plus, no having to replace the battery once a year.

tiny flare
#

Yeah this has killed my desire to mod my Saturn at all, previously was considering getting and ODE and stuff like that

errant crown
#

The PS1 core already replaced my PS1. The N64 has mostly replaced my N64. Especially with the turbo core.

#

Who knows if the Saturn would’ve used memory cards if it had released a year or so later.

#

I mean, the Saturn technically did, if you count those save data cartridges, but only certain games supported them.

tiny flare
#

The system level save memory was actually quite forward looking, it was just too early - a few years later Xbox would have a HDD, which is pretty much the ideal version of that, until now where we have fast and readily available non-volatile flash memory

severe whale
#

Is the mouse support implemented fully? I got the impression that it might need some updates?

Now let’s hope the 480i support is implemented and we are wrapping up!
