The two steps to all red wide is too many projectiles that you end up with too many gaps
those gaps go away very fast once your weapon levels up

I was 98-99% sure of the issue from my previous experiences on the system (and how Saturn dumps were incorrectly done before 2011-2012).
And with the SCSP almost perfect now, I'm also reassured about it, that's not a core at fault.

I've just tested the game for 5-10 minutes some weeks ago, so if an issue occurs this escaped my vigilance.

Meh. Was hoping for something a little more with these so-called 'remasters' coming out for PS4/PS5. Don't get me wrong, I'm always excited to see anything Lunar-related... but the footage shown so far looked very underwhelming, little more than upscaled (and not very cleanly) PS1 versions.
Apparently Saroo doesn’t support MPEG card
It disables the CD block system and bypass it.
Necessary for the MPEG decompression card to have it enabled.

I've been using SNAX. I just recieved SNAC V1 from misteraddons..testing SNAC with orange saturn lightgun and got nothing to work

With SNAX the start button on the lightgun works but the screen flashes when pulling the trigger but nothing happens

The Saturn sees the train controller as a regular gamepad so I’d imagine that SNAC would support it, wouldn’t it?
Apparently the different positions of the handle are different face+shoulder button combinations, it’s not analog or whatever

The Saturn version is an improved version of the first arcade game with better graphics and extra train lines. It’s the definitive version of DDG 1.
The PS1 one is a straight port I think.

PC got the best port of the first game. Double the resolution and far more stable textures which flicker about all over the place on PS1 and Saturn. Saturn is worse graphicly than PS1, the texture mapping is awful, it's a rougher looking game.
My recommendation for anyone getting into the series is to play Professional on PS1, all the tracks from 1 & 2 with a far fairer difficulty compared to arcade.

Live footage stuff is interesting but also a bit janky if you dont exactly match the speed the footage was shot at. That game is stuffed with expensive DLC, you dont get much with the base game.
I really, really love how the early Densha games look too, thats a big part in my enjoyment. Nagoya Tetsudo-hen on PS1 is also worth picking up too.

test builds usually aren't on github I don't think? (correct me if I'm wrong, but they are usually just linked here)
Yep. Test builds aren’t usually on GitHub, they’re usually manually built and uploaded here into #test-builds
Unstable builds are automatically built with the CI pipelines in GitHub once there are new commits, so you could grab those from GitHub (see @warped saddle’s message for details). They’re also on discord, here: #unstable-nightlies
Test builds are usually manually built by a developer when they explicitly want to seek feedback.
Unstable builds are built automatically (sometimes the buildbot can fail for complex cores), and just reflect the most recent commit in the main branch for each core. The devs aren’t necessarily explicitly asking for feedback, but they’re helpful for e.g. the Saturn, where there’s a long time between official releases.
NB: a “release” is a blessed build which is manually committed to the releases directory of the repo. This one has been manually built by a developer. For more complex cores e.g. N64, PSX, this might have required many builds to find the one which gives the best timing/timing closure.

I saw the latest episode of Gamesack. Was kind of surprised how Joe undersold Mister. Left out many key features. Such as ability to force 480i into 480p on the PSX core for instance. And many other core updates.
Yeah its easy for people to undersell the MiSTer. its not like there's a promotion and marketing department to make all that information easy to find and remember for the average content creator
Joe seems to have tested the stable Saturn core too instead of the last unstable one.
He does have all the original systems with ODE/flashcards, so I can understand that he is not updating and following everythng done (and possible) with the MiSTer.
I'm already pleased that he talks about it once more 4/5 years after.

Seems so, for the moment
I need to acquire some original Saturn connector ports, these cheap ports that come with all the SNACs are so bad, I have a few and I need to wiggle around for anything to register, the fire button works, but the start button works 3% of the time on all my lightguns so it's not the lightguns
I tried 3 different SNAC modules. I tried three different lightguns. I tried rebooting, resetting etc. I tried contact spray on the connections. The fire button seems to work 80% of the time while the start button seems to work 3% of the time, while wiggling the connector.
maybe try not inserting into the saturn connector all the way, leave a gap
yup, tried every possible position between fully inserted and fully removed. And sideways movement, pressure up, down, left, right. Angled up, down etc. while pressing the start button repeatedly. Thinking it might be more than just the connector atm. maybe some sync issue or needing to restart when connection lost, recovered. I dunno.
have you ever considered having test-build access be its own role? might make people more likely to pick it by themselves

My friend took his MiSTer to an FGC tournament to spread the gospel about Asuka 120%. It apparently went over pretty well.
Is this a known issue? Saturn Rayman played flawlessly until the end where it crashed upon beating the final boss. Not missing out on much, but it's a crash no less.

This is it everyone, Mr Dark himself. The play here got pretty sloppy at first but I manage to do it the next time, plusI learned a little trick where you can knock 2 HP off of Skops-Stone each time. Note the moon at the very top of the screen...

I remember a VDP1 coordinate precision bug on Mednafen which caused the same issue here.

Time to try out Quake on Saturn with mouse support
Quake 64 worked surprisingly well on the N64 core
The overlocked core even removed all the slowdown which is a game changer

I tried Irréel (Unreal port/homebrew) recently and it works so much better than last time I tried
I had forgotten how much better looking Quake is on N64 compared to Saturn
N64 had a bit of an unfair advantage there, but the Saturn port still turned out really well all things considered

yeah, Saturn port is the worse way to play Quake but I think that makes it super cool
Anyway. A bummer that it doesn’t support mouse. Would had been cool to play that way.
The N64 version doesn’t support mouse but the mouse option in the core works surprisingly well. Also the in game settings gives you more options to adjust the controls
quake on saturn uses the same engine as powerslave saturn right
wheras the n64 version is actual quake engine
Mostly its that the N64 is much more powerful hardware.

The all did the best they could with the tech available at a reasonable price at the time
Back in the day i was not a big fan of either the N64 or Saturn but since the cores appearing on MiSTer i spend more time playing with the Saturn core than N64.

The worst thing and best thing about Saturn was it's unpopularity. It sucked for longevity of the console (though it did ok), but at the end all the toy stores sold off inventory for sub $5. My brother got most of his library at the end of life and he was working a convenience store job paying his own rent. It was so cheap he grabbed things that are hundreds now for 99 cents.
Also, I remember FF3/6 being $80 in store when I asked for it and getting an almost laughing 'no' about it . I can't imagine how loud that laugh would have been if I'd asked for a $100 game. The struggle was real.

Actually you don't need to if you rename the BIOS file to "boot.rom" and put it in the games folder.

Update all does have an option to pull BIOS files from a database. Though you can always manually put a BIOS file into the games folder too.
Seems I have the bios in my archive buts named “saturn_bios.bin” and it’s 512kb. can I confirm the file size is correct and it’s just got an incorrect name?

Weirdly half my roms seems incompatible but that’s a fix for another time
Double check that your game files are in individual folders and come from "redump" databases, just to avoid any bad dumps.
Also I would recommend getting the latest unstable build, since it's much more up to date.

Saturn seem to in general be some combination of touchier about rips and having a particularly high volume of bad rips floating around
Yeah I didn’t know there was such a thing as a bad rom dump or disc rip until I used the MiSTer. Seems like a lot of people dumped games incorrectly.

I think another “problem” is that emulators capitulate to people complaining about their games not working so they include work arounds for bad dumps.

You can just put the file into the _Console folder and it should boot up like normal.
But if you want to organize the unstable builds in the future, I would recommend creating a new folder like "_Unstable" on the root of the SD card and put the unstable builds there. They should still function with no issues.

Oh wow, so for you the Virtua Gun is working fully with the Saturn core and the SNAC adapter and Area51?? For me only the trigger button works, the start button does not respond. I tried two different Virtua Guns and two different SNAC adapters and tried wiggling the connections. Hmm.. what Saturn core version are you using?

It's already supported, you just need to manually set it up in the OSD.
Just remember that Shinobi Legions has a programming bug that causes the game to crash if there are two controllers detected. In The Hunt has a similar issue.
they said more than 2 which I don't think is supported right now.

Ok, then I will continue to troubleshoot. The Analog IO board IO6 jumper should be on IO and not 3.3V I presume? I have analog IO board rev 6.x. Yes I am using two original Virtua Guns. Tracking (aiming) works and the trigger too. I will try my second MiSTer with analog IO board rev 9.2.
yeah you can leave the jumper on io6. it could be connection problem but I think you said you tried cleaning the connectors. which snac are you using again?

We have a complete road for the MiSTer right now.
Better N64 and Saturn on the system, clones are getting there and next batch before the next month.
Better SNES too, don't forget that. I have some people enamored on Analogue systems which tried to down the MiSTer as not accurate as the real hardware and the Super NT on the SA1.

I'm doing preservation works since 30 years, worked with almost all known teams, pushed some of them breaking the limits too.
Personally, I wanted a system where we could do almost everything, without being enclosed by a system or a limited by video/audio signals.
I have once helped some projects like on the Pi systems, but I've seen some limits and I don't like working with pieces of EmulationStation here, RA there and such.
I've seen RA management destroying or trying to destroy people.
That's not a solution.
That project is here, now, better than ever, we have dedicated people, passionate devs.
So let's do it an even better and I have faith on what will be accomplished.

Okay, that was really weird... just started a game of Shining Force 3 Scenario 1 on the latest unstable.. loaded my save data (on the train) and every single attack caused confusion on both my characters and enemies. Loaded the stable instead, no issue, all normal. Loaded unstable again, still all normal.. it's like the randomizer got stuck before

I think there are still sound issues though, mainly on the CDDA side of things.
I know the inaccuracies on the CDDA was a known issue a while back.
Like some games have sound mixing issues where the audio is more quiet than it should be, typically stuff like vocal songs in the intros to certain games.

Out of curiosity what light gun Saturn games is everyone excited for? I see a lot of Virtua cop but I can play that on my PS2. I really want to play HOTD but have heard the Saturn port is rough

ok you should be set and ready to go. The saturn cable should work with the single port snac or snax with a regular saturn pad if that's what you were trying.

there's a controller test rom @errant crown I'd say mess with the connection, leave a mm or 2 gap between controller adapter and saturn peripheral while running that.

I’ve been using the single port SNAC from MiSTerAddons, which works perfectly for the Virtua Gun
Previously I was using their 2-port SNAX which was working fine for regular and 3D pad, but yeah doesn’t work for the virtua gun
@inner token Thanks for sharing that file! Apparently with Snax at least, the controller port has to be at a very specific sweet spot, or otherwise it won’t read or just mess up all the buttons. I’ve gotten it to recognize my 3D pad, but haven’t gotten any of the buttons to work yet.
Oh I should mention when I ordered the SNAC I also grabbed one of the improved Saturn dongles (it calls this out on the store page now). Checks out, it really is improved, no need to wiggle the controller port around to get it to make good contact anymore

I think this is gonna replace my console soon, at least for the most part. Not having to deal with the finicky cartridge slot and getting per-game saves is a huge plus.
Plus, no having to replace the battery once a year.
Yeah this has killed my desire to mod my Saturn at all, previously was considering getting and ODE and stuff like that
The PS1 core already replaced my PS1. The N64 has mostly replaced my N64. Especially with the turbo core.
Who knows if the Saturn would’ve used memory cards if it had released a year or so later.
I mean, the Saturn technically did, if you count those save data cartridges, but only certain games supported them.
The system level save memory was actually quite forward looking, it was just too early - a few years later Xbox would have a HDD, which is pretty much the ideal version of that, until now where we have fast and readily available non-volatile flash memory
