The console do this when it is turned on with the disc lid opened.

mortal mist
#

Works fine

#

Could this be something with the differences of MLC, SLC, or 3D NAND in flash drives, SSDs and microSD cards? Could it be why some cause flickering and others don't?

burnt matrix
#

Could also just play Grandia on the PS1 🤷‍♂️

mortal mist
#

bleehhhh

#

I really like the PS1 version 🙂

burnt matrix

I do too! I own it and the Switch port. But I’m probably going to play the Saturn version, haha.

I'm doing a fresh install on this sandisk card , I'll see what comes out of it soon

thorn pagoda
#

yeah that'll be interesting

mortal mist
#

no change

#

is still flickering

thorn pagoda

freshly fusioned and it still does it? even weirder!

It was robby and him mentioning all the non saturn platforms

thorn pagoda

mortal mist
#

I think I have another one, will check it

thorn pagoda
#

does this happen on any version of grandia? i want to test it myself now

ripe valley
#

Both.

#

From what I read on the issue log.

mortal mist
#

yes, same for jp and eng translation

#

I am preparing a second sandisk card

#

same grade

thorn pagoda
#

just installing the latest core, i have a sandisk black

wise brook
#

damn the grandia issue is now so old no one remembers i did all these things mentioned above

#

i even tried downloading the game on to a different operating system and different transfer methods to see if i could stop it

mortal mist
#

I am sorry that we cannot find the cause.

sacred goblet

Happy S32X day 😉

thorn pagoda
mortal mist
#

thanks for checking!

thorn pagoda
#

And the floor juddering thing

#

Going to try Sandisk silver next

ripe valley
#

I'm searching some more VDP2 issues at the moment.
Nothing really complex, most probably some masking priority issues so far.

thorn pagoda
#

Happening on the sandisk silver too

mortal mist
#

hmm

thorn pagoda
#

and on both my misters

mortal mist
#

same for my second sandisk sd card

thorn pagoda
#

maybe its a sandisk problem?

#

anyone using sandisk and not having an issue?

sacred goblet
#

I can try i have sandisk

#

cue/bin or CHD => no matter?

mortal mist
#

i tried bin/cue

thorn pagoda
#

i was bin/cue, the translated patch

#

once the intro finally ends, turn around and look for a nearby house, go inside and run around, you should see the flicker

#

its weird its almost like it flickers when you run over specific points on the floor

sacred goblet
#

Ok i will try

#

Is Disc1? Exact name i have is "Grandia (Japan) (Disc 1) (1M)"

thorn pagoda
#

yea

mortal mist
#

I already see flicker from the very beginning

#

on the ship

sacred goblet
#

I see some texture flickering during the intro when the charactersare speaking

gloomy hedge
#

After the intro when i go to the house and go around i see some wall textures flickering.

thorn pagoda
#

sacred goblet
#

I don't have any problems with others games. I have sandisk 512 GB

#

sacred goblet

I will add the results of my tests on github

sacred goblet
#

I would like to try the same iso you are using, can you send me a pm?

mortal mist
#

I test different cards with the same version of the game on the same de10 and have different results

sacred goblet
#

Ah ok so it seems to be related to sdcard ...

mortal mist
#

I am now checking on another de10

thorn pagoda
#

i've heard anecdotally that sandisk cards can be electrically noisy

sick hare
#

All sdcard related maybe for speed or latency issues

#

Probably with network works

mortal mist

#

Now kioxia

mortal mist

It would be faster if you could skip the fmv

#

Kioxia = no flickering

#

#

At this point I will end the tests, I only have a problem with Sandisk

#

Samsung ok too

drowsy hull
#

Samsung evo select says you are wandering the path of desperation

thorn pagoda
#

thanks kuba, hopefully we've given srg some hint to work off

mortal mist
#

I would very much like to see this problem solved

marble laurel
#

it appears since which release or it is present since the day Grandia is playable ?

thorn pagoda
#

since 20240417

mortal mist
thorn pagoda
#

the strange judder on the floor texture is actually worse than the flickering thing though since thats everywhere

mortal mist
#

Yes and this problem does not occur when there is no case of flicker

ripe valley
#

Unofficial build.
I've upstream'd the changes on the SH2 module from the 32x to the Saturn one.
Some clock dividers changed and a busy state changed on the IBUS.

#

I've tested the core the last 2 hours, I've not seen something break nor any regression so far.

marble laurel
#

on my side with sdcard sandisk I don't have flickering at this part

thorn pagoda
#

i don't seem to have a single none-sandisk sdcard in the house lol

#

i even threw out whatever the ones that came with the mister were

sacred goblet
thorn pagoda
#

yeah thats the first build it happens in

#

someone just posted on github they have a samsung card and have the flickering so i guess that blows that theory up

mortal mist
#

changes in 20240417

ancient surge
#

Why the logs from months ago?

thorn pagoda
#

those are the commits from the build where it broke

#

its a shame saturn core has no fps counter, i'd be curious if the flickering coincides with framerate drops

#

it feels like the game is dropping frames all over but that might just be the ground texture thing

cinder hawk
#

I also have flickering using Samsung Evo Plus microSD Card (2020) 512GB with the latest stable build

mortal mist
#

I see the problem is quite popular 😄

ripe valley
#

If you could all test with the previous version 20240409, that could be great.

#

And confirm or not that you have the flicker during the end of the intro at least or inside the museum with a save file.

ripe valley
#

If everyone say the flickering is gone, I could try to revert all changes on the VDP1/2, one by one.
And see when it breaks.

#

That could potentially help srg320 in tracking the issue.

#

That could be long and fastidious, but if it's necessary, let's do it later.
But I want that confirmation before.

drowsy hull
#

are these compatible with current main?

thorn pagoda
#

errr.. maybe? :/

ripe valley
#

Should be.
I'm not available for the next hour, so I leavethe tests up to you.

#

And will do the hard work later reverting and compiling.

sacred goblet
#

i will do test now

mortal mist
#

I started testing

marble laurel
mortal mist
drowsy hull
#

anyone has a link to the save handy?

sacred goblet
#

Same as kuba. No flickering in the intro with 20240409 build - sandisk card too

ripe valley
#

Okay, at least 2 people are agree here.
I'm launching a build with the VDP2 revert first.

#

Let's call it within 30 mins to 1H.
And later tonight, I will revert this time the VDP1 changes - if we can't see anything breaking with the VDP2 change.

mortal mist
#

good plan 🙂

drowsy hull
#

no problems and the VDPs draw updates are in sync

sacred goblet
#

Perhaps i could test with 20240417 to confirm flickering appears?

mortal mist
#

the more tests the better

sacred goblet
#

Go!

#

I confirm that in my setup flickering appears in 20240417 build (sandisk)

mortal mist
#

Same for me ( sandisk)

Yeah, he's really impressive

pearl harbor

But a tthis point, the individual outstanding issues are probably getting few and far between, so probably one commit addresses more than one issue just because it's only one thing broken

small gust
# ripe valley If you could all test with the previous version 20240409, that could be great.

Can also confirm once again that the flicker does not occur on 20240409 build.
I was also the one who wrote on Github that I do indeed use the same kind of samsung card that Kuba did, but mine is 512gb, but do experience flicker.

Also srg320 recently replied that he believes the floor object desync issue is non related to the flickering, and probably just a part of the game. I am not so sure he watched the videos captured from a real saturn?

thorn pagoda
#

pretty sure its not because we have vids of it not happening

small gust
#

My previous post on the issue also suggests that its its started on the 20240417 build, as mentioned above.

small gust
#

or well, it might be two different issues, and fixing one might not nessecarily fix the other. But it seems like the desync should not occur either way.

thorn pagoda
#

yeah i think he's right that its two issues

timid roost
#

@mortal mist Have you tried to booting Grandia from USB to check how it looks booting from there?

small gust
#

I have not

thorn pagoda
#

storage was probably a red herring

#

although... well i guess so far everyone with flicker is using an sdcard

mortal mist
#

I only get desync on sandisk, desync does not occur when there is no flicker problem

#

I can make another 10 films, but I don't want to keep repeating it.

mortal mist
#

sandisks = flickering

#

kioxia, samsung = no flickiering

thorn pagoda
#

though others have reported flickering on samsung, and no flickering on sandisk

#

there isn't really any clear pattern

timid roost
#

maybe it is the size of the SD?

mortal mist
#

all are 256gb

thorn pagoda
#

mine are both 512

small gust
#

and my flickering samsung card is 512

mortal mist
#

I'm leaving this topic , I'll wait for Zet-sensei , maybe we can find out what spoiled Grandia

thorn pagoda
#

yep

small gust
#

Yeah, him reverting the changes one by one and give us testbuilds seems to be the best way to pinpoint the issue at this stage

Sorry for the delay.

#

EDIT : Removed as the test is negative.

#

I've just reverted the VDP2 to a state from 20240409.

#

I need someone to test the code and report if the flicker occurs anymore.

#

The VDP1 will be quite challenging to revert without breaking anything, too much changes since then.
At the moment, I need to revert 2 functions but won't compile.
I'm too tired today, and I have a pretty important meeting tomorrow morning.

I took down the (older) downloads at the moment.

Just a quick note - we are also waiting to have something final before showing the testrom to the software emulators developers - it will be done in due time.
We will be talking to them directly as we have the direct connections with them.
Thanks.

ripe valley
#

I tried to revert some modules of the core to previous states but it was infructuous about the results.
We will need t see with srg320 directly, sorry.

Reverting the VDP1 changes without touching other modules is too complex for me at the moment.

trim nimbus
#

Would it make sense to revert between the good version and the next version? Your main target is grandia so other fixes aren’t necessary.

#

Or is that what you were doing?

ripe valley
#

I tried to fix X-Men vs. SF first, the SCU changes reverted go a little bit further but won't fix the issue completely.
But let's that aside now.

For Grandia, too much changes on all the modules, only reverting the VDP1 won't work and even won't compile anymore.

#

I thought it could be easier but I'm not skilled enough at the moment for doing it whole, I must confess.

ripe valley
#

So far, I took the 2024-09-02 source code, removed every line of the changes on the SCSP done on 2024-08-24.
Creating an hybrid between the 2024-08-17 version of the SCSP (shared by kuba yesterday) but with all the additions from the 2024-09-02.
I needed to patch up some functions for the compilation of that core.

At the moment, the core regressed with scratchy sounds and PCM playback is partallly broken.
But, the core is stable for launching the games, even SEGA Rally (the SCSP receives and send signals without breaking) and X-Men vs. Street Fighter (the introduction could play completely but with strange noises).

On the SCSP test, the DMA is now broken, but the 2024-09-02 SCSP changes don't brake other games.

I will try to patch up the PCM playback function later.

#

Most probably, srg320 will fix the issue within like 5-10 mins, but I want to learn some basics on the core through trials-and-errors by myself too.

mortal mist
#

I was trying to play with the code today to get to the flicker problem for Grandia , but unfortunately I outgrew it at one point 😄

ripe valley
#

I've gained the sound once more + PCM playback, but the core is failing on X-Men and SEGA Rally.
I've isolated 2 possible functions inside the SCSP source code that could be the culprit.

#

On the DMA (direct access memory) side, I've launched 2 compilations at the same time, we will see the culprit in the next hour (and maybe how to partially fix it).

Hi guys, I've asked in numerous places, trying to find out if this wheel is supported in the Saturn core, it's in the settings, but doesn't seem to do anything, although the wheel has been confirmed as working by the seller Cheers.

That would be great, thank you, the sega pad works, the mission pad works, the 3d pad works in analogue mode, just cannot get the steering to work, I have a shuttle mouse coming as well, I know there all in the settings, I look forward to your reply.. thank you.

#

After 2 days tracking down the issue for SEGA Rally and X-Men vs. SF, I may have found the issue.
14 builds later & playing with the code : by reverting everything on the SCSP side from 2024-09-02 to 2024-08-17 manually + testing & adding function by function, I've tracked down where the code fails.

I've learned many things on the Saturn console internal behaviors during that little time, even after getting around the software emulation teams these last 25 years.

#

The issue is somewhere here, on the SCSP loop functions.
On the left, the 2024-09-02 version.
On the right, my current code with remains of the 2024-08-17 version.

#

Like I said yesterday, most probably srg320 will fix it within 5-10 mins, but I wanted to learn with the hard way.
Luckily, it's not the DMA which is at fault, that would be much tricky to fix.

Finishing the SCSP (sound chip), even edge cases.
Fixing some VDPx priorities between layers.

Some SNAC code will need polish after everything else is in order.
Some VDP timings too for games like Dead or Alive, Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix.

ancient surge
#

As far as I'm aware, every game boots like intended and the overall compatibility is strong.

I have booted up a lot of random games for testing purposes, and I have not found a lot of egregious problems. Just a handful of games that have minor performance issues like unintended lag spikes compared to the original hardware and the 480i being partially implemented.

#

Of course in my case I have the best case scenario with my MiSTer set up. Others still get different results depending on their RAM and storage configuration.

sacred perch
ripe valley
#

I tried some VDPx testroms lately (srg320 should have the same when I'm watching some 3-year old dev videos on YT), but the quality isn't on par with what we have now for the SCSP.

#

So it will be mostly by continuous reverse engineering and trials-and-errors for the next steps.

#

For the complete SNAC support, srg320 have already said some months ago that will be the least priority. Having the system correctly working is more important right now.

ancient surge
#

Honestly I would rather have quality of life improvements like the ability to speed up the loading or the ability to blend the dithering from the VDP1 to simulate proper transparency.

But I get that making sure everything works first should be the top priority.

ripe valley
#

I'm no srg320, but I was in beta testing teams for several Saturn software emulators all these years.

Speeding up the loading of the disc is extremely difficult on the system, as it needs also changing the logic behind it and how everything is accessed on the system.
I don't remember any Saturn SW emulator capable of doing it at the moment.

#

For the VDP blending, I don't remember if a SW emulator is capable of doing it without requiring and relying on 3D drivers capabilities (D3D, OGL or Vulkan).

#

Ps1 emulation has been pretty good for as long as I can remember, n64 worked fine for some games and not so fine for others, saturn emulation just made me think that it seems like a nice console, in theory

Some don't even allow to talk about their existence (testroms inside an official SDK) as they want pure clean room reverse engineering, some are more lax.

ripe valley

DuckStation and Dolphin are like that and known for that too.

#

And in my personal opinion: the official documentation and the SEGA SDK are full of mistakes and some (intentional) translation errors.
I've followed the full retranslation and correction of the internal documentations these last years.
The best for the Saturn core is to redo everything from scratch, not taking any official documentation as absolute, and not touching them even with a stick.

Lol I wouldn't know if it's merited but I really like dreamcast so it might be... sega has produced some of my fav games so it's weird seeing them being carried so hard by sonic, which I honestly think is the least interesting part

#

The dream for me would be if they made gazillion dollars from the sonic movies and then decided to create another console

Awesome, will update to that later when the unstable goes live 🙂

wise brook
#

i wonder what, if any other saturn issues are still on the main side

ancient surge
#

I think there are still CDDA inaccuracies on the main side, since some games that stream audio from the disc have sound balance issues.

I might be wrong on this, since there are some games I'm not super familiar with on original hardware.

marble laurel
#

SNES part also is great maybe we will could launch correctly Super Mario Bros Maker

ancient surge
#

The tricky part about vetting sound issues on the SEGA Saturn is that some games just have incorrect sound baked into the game itself.

For example, the SEGA Saturn port of Twinkle Star Sprites has heavily compressed audio of sound effects and voice clips during matches that sticks out like a sore thumb, compared to the rest of the audio that sounds more normal.

Cleopatra Fortune also has sound balancing issues, where sound effects are a lot louder than the music, to the point that clearing tiles is so loud that it can jump scare you.

I don't know of other bugs like in Die Hard , but it may have an impact on other games, who knows

marble laurel
#

I saw one game (but don't remember the name) on the FMV sometimes when characters talk it seems the core not have the data and the music stop for a very short time I will check again this case

#

It is Linker Live Story

violet wolf
#

Is it possible to merge mains

#

Probably not

ancient surge
#

Any time the main gets updated, any other modifications are also carried over, even from other unstable builds.

amber heart
ripe valley
#

You can potentially have a dump with an incorrect pregap value or a misaligned data track.

amber heart
ripe valley
#

For explaining, some Saturn games have multiple pregaps possible (sometimes errors during the mastering process).
Some older dumps were done incorrectly and didn't align the tracks with the correct pregaps, like with Chou Aniki here.

#

Normally, the correct dump of that game should be like that : a data track followed by music tracks, with tracks 2 and 3 having different pregraps declared.

Redump set was done with correct current semi-archival method and documented.

#

The sole core where you need a "dirty" set is for the NGPC.
I tried to leave an issue log to Jotego about it, to test the future versions with a proper set.

#

Older dumps were done with saves already inside the ROM dump (NGP/C consoles work with FlashROM and their saves are inside the same chip as the game).
Proper set with no initialized save and no save init flag can't be read properly by the core at the moment.

#

Anyway, that was just a quick info.

zealous karma
#

Thanks for the info, maybe thats why NGP core is percieved as unstable

Okay so I'm not the only one that noticed the weird lack of "clean" Neo Geo Pocket ROMs floating around.

I wish Bruce Willis would've ended on another note, instead of "dying slowly from dementia"

#

It makes me sad, even just playing the arcade game

hearty carbon
#

worse, "shoved into movies while slowly deteriorating from dementia until his agent and family could no longer hide it and make money off of him"

#

Just a shitty way to be done. 😦

violet wolf

Yea that part as well, not sure I saw any of those last ones but really sad. Woa just looked

#

It's like ten movies in a year, that's sick

hearty carbon
#

There are articles where people are talking about how bad it got.

#

Like, he didn't know where he was or what he was doing, etc.,

#

Productions being like, "he's not mentally competent enough to handle a prop gun" kind of stuff

green swift
#

I read that doing all those last roles was his decision, so he could bank roll before requiring retirement.

#

According to his daughter I believe

violet wolf
#

Feels like some kind of abuse of his legacy as well. But yea, I could see myself doing the same thing, impossible to know

hearty carbon
#

On the one hand, I would want to do as much as I could for people I loved. On the other hand, that's exactly the kind of thing someone profiting from the situation would have to say when confronted with it.

#

It's gross either way and at some point you have to stop putting the person with mental issues out into those situations whether they agreed to it previously or not.

violet wolf
#

Like, doing a bunch of crap to cash in at the end, the good movies will still be there. Yes it's difficult to know, it's even more difficult to know how aware of it all he was

#

It hits harder with Bruce, I kind of put him in the category of really physical leading men even tho he never was big or super ripped like arnold

hearty carbon
#

Yeah, he was a pretty good regular dude action hero

green swift
#

But at the time he was fully aware of what he was doing. He just couldn’t express himself the way a typical person could.

hearty carbon
green swift
#

lol I just read the part about the gun and blanks. Nvm apparently he was worse off than was indicated. That’s sad.

hearty carbon
#

Yeah, they were working pretty hard to cover for him and hide it but once his retirement was announced people started talking.

#

I don't know. That stuff's terrifying.

#

You can prepare and adjust for a failing body but your brain going is just terrifying.

#

Imagine, not being able to do the quick time events on the completely on-topic classic game Die Hard Arcade.

Indeed. I have a neighbor with dementia. It’s been terrible watching her decline.

#

My neighbor is in the game as a completely on topic quick-time enemy

The release dates I had when I started were like 50% wrong, so I'm re-doing some of the old episodes while making new ones. I will begin uploading them this summer. And by this summer I actually meant, uhhh... after that summer. 2022 babeeeee!!

Im tired switching bios can someone once again simply explain the file pathing to make that no longer a necessity?

ripe valley
#

Could you explain what you want as result if I could help you ?

#

Having the same BIOS launching all your games ?

bleak escarp
#

I know there's region free bios out there but I also saw there's a method to just restructure folder layout and like bios will boot with like region games

amber heart
hearty marten
#

I think the multiple regional bioses just follows the same approach as the SEGA CD core (although I haven’t tested it)

bleak escarp
#

Then I guess I'll just use Hi Saturn 3.0 Bios then didnt realize it were that simple

amber heart
ripe valley
#

That's what I do too, and for some problematic games, I keep a specific BIOS inside the folder of the game.

serene thunder

I also use hi saturn. It's great but I do miss the original Saturn boot animation 😢

kindred peak

I'd just use a modded region free bios.

polar mountain
#

Say what now?!!??

#

So a region free bios modded with the og boot animation?

hearty marten
ripe valley

The headers inside the first track are bogus (mastering error) and the Hi-Saturn with the region free option isn't working.

What if you explicitly set the region in the OSD?

ripe valley

The core fails to load the game after some screens.

hearty marten

Cool to know. Thanks

Not that I have the Saturn versions of those games anyway 😅

For Die Hard Trilogy, I've patched the game on my side.
For the two other games, I'm using an older firmware/other region.

Yes so the convenience of hi saturn just with choose your own boot animation
