wise brook
#

as mentioned it did work on earlier core revisions

mortal mist
#

I tried with single too

wise brook
#

and now it doesn’t with my particular copy. i’ll make a fresh one

#

i thought i’d found a particular edge case

#

i mean technically i must have if the same file produces 2 different results based on core revision

#

i will go thru core revisions to find when this happened exactly

#

it might be of some use to srg

#

again to reiterate i’ve got 2 MiSTer one with 3.0 & one with 2.9 ram both functioning perfectly otherwise

#

and most importantly

#

thank you all and especially @mortal mist for looking into this

mortal mist
#

🍻 I wanted to replicate it a lot, it's easier when the problem occurs for more people. I have also had such problems when for me something didn't work , and for others it was ok

ancient surge

The only issue I'm noticing with Grandia so far is just the bugged 480i over analog/direct video, which is a problem every game has at the moment.

I've tried like 7 different BIOSes for Saturn and all of them output dirty artifacted video, is that because I don't have dual RAM ?

worn ore

I'll contact the vendor, the listing doesn't explicitly state the ram frequency so i'm not sure if it's the product's fault or mine for not buying the right thing

Yeah SEGA Saturn core is really picky with the RAM by design. So your problem is not unique in the slightest.

#

@mortal mist It's my first time looking at the official memory test.
It's supposed to run automatically, right?
I mean: without intervention, it simply decreases the frequency (yellow number on the upper-right part of the screen) as it encounters errors, is that correct?
Then, for how much time should I leave it on for reliable results?

stiff patrol
#

it can run in both auto and manual

#

Auto us best

#

and yes the frequency in top right will be dropped until no errors occur

#

once you reach a frequency that isnt giving errors let it run for 10-20 mins

#

if the frequency goes below 130 your ram is toast

river wing
#

Thanks @stiff patrol

stiff patrol
#

Good quality ram normally will run at > 140

#

my 2.9 runs at 150 but its a freak, Ie I got lucky in the silicon lottery

#

my 2.5 runs at 143

river wing
#

My 2.9 seems to have stabilized at 145 (it's been 10 minutes, I will leave it running a couple of hours)

stiff patrol

I can confirm the issue on my two MiSTer systems with your indications.
We have a flickering also when the camera is spinning to the vehicle on the START line.

Same for SEGA Rally when the camera is spinning for the last second around the vehicle after passing the FINISH line on the first level.
Les severe than the previous build but remain present.

EDIT : I see only now that you already opened an issue on the tracker.

Ah! yes, and the phrase itself is used in Extremadura, a region of Spain, so maybe it's unknown to other spanish-speaking countries

Spanish is truly unique, I don't think any other language has something like "me cago en la leche puta!" as a phrase to swear. (Which means "I crap on the f**ng milk!"). Makes no sense, no one here thinks about it but it's constantly used.

has anyone else seen issues when pairing a retrobit saturn wireless pad? it doesn’t allow me to define Z and L… surely I’m not the only one…

#

I tried keeping Start+B pressed for 4sec, only thing that changed was the pad leds went from one to two on. As if switching from 1P and 2P

wise brook
#

that’s because you’re changing it from one mode to another

#

you then have to remap the thing in MiSTer main

then you can map it in the core

tawdry lion

I know 150MHz is not common for 2.5. If I recall someone said that 140MHz 2.5 actually is not performing as well as a 140MHz 2.9

#

but mine handles higher than that so.... hmm... I wonder

#

I got a really good bin I guess.... I've tested some games with the Saturn core, but I haven't played extensively... are there some games that are DEFINITELY known to be problematic with 2.5?

There’s a lot of different issues with older ram in the Saturn core but sega rally is the easiest and most fun to test. If it white screens between races or some of the audio cuts out during a race, it’s still not right.

#

That said, with the last few cores I couldn’t even get into a race without hitting the white screen of death… so that wasn’t very fun anymore.

Unfortunately, it may be that the core will never work well with the old sdram. If indeed core uses it to the limit , not all revisions will cope.

# wise brook i take this as high praise, modern gaming is drowning in “content”, some kids i ...

I'll admit as one of the 65% of the playerbase of Fortnite that is aged 25-34, that at least Fortnite is one of the few free-to-play games that seems to get how to make a subscription model both optional and paying for itself, in the literal sense.... not to mention that Lego Fortnite is like... the lego procedurally-generated survival game I always wanted as a kid. lol.

The subscription actually gives you 150% of the subscription cost back in V-Bucks... so you can actually pay for the next season's subscription off of that and then some, if you refuse to buy anything from the store... which it helps that the game has absolutely no gear-type mechanics.... every player is the same stats. No differences between characters or exclusive gear you can get.

Anyway... I used to be one of the people that hated on Fortnite (and teh build mode is worth hating) but the zero-build mode actually has like no kids playing it.... they all hate not building lol. And some of the other game types are quite fun. (Creative mode actually had a Squidgame map that would play random minigames like in the show xD)

#

I came from playing BR modes in ArmA/DayZ and then PUBG though. So, to me, it always felt like a shameless ripoff pivot by Epic that popped off because it was free.

#

I realize how much they've done since then to earn their spot in a lot of ways but I can't say that I can ever forgive some of the results of that Fortnite pivot. UT strangled in its crib, Epic made an exclusive platform inside of the PC market, etc., etc.,

tawdry lion
#

While I don't like EPIC as a company, at the very least I am surprised at how there's a very low incentive to feel the need to put money into the game. Can't say that for most free-to-play titles

hearty carbon
#

Any game that lets you grind out the Battlepass without paying real money and doesn't require 80 hours a week of my time is okay with me.

#

My partner is really into Rocket League and she'll go off about Epic fucking that game up.

tawdry lion
#

Except when you don't play Fortnite for a while, and come back... you get massive exp boosts anyway so you'll level tons of times in one go for doing that. Honestly I play nowhere near that much... maybe like a 1-3 hour session every day or two, if that.. (sometimes I don't play for a few days) and I'm at level 140 lol (25 of those levels were purchased, so technically I would be 115... but it's definitely achievable at this pace.)

and that does make it easier for me to enjoy it. I've spent enough time being anchored to playing online games day after day in a row

Copyright striked 🤪 But indeed, the real hardware capture (that is not striked down) shows one stutter at the exact same time as the core does. But then (at least for me) there is pretty consistent stuttering moving forward on the core. It seems unlikely to be a (HPS -> core) bandwidth limitation since the PSX core can chug along at 4x and even 8x.

Maybe related to the Die Hard loading time regression? Both seems to have appeared during the same time frame.. (but really, I’m not 100% sure that MKR stuttering is a regression, maybe I was just in awe that everything worked as well as it does before, and didn’t care too much about some stuttering. It's very unique to your mister, but it's getting more and more predicable every build and dial RAM is, in general, not necessary for good performance. As far as I remember I have a 2.5 and it is also ok. However it does succeed the memtest for long time at 150MHz, which is much better than some iirc that can't go past 145MHz

#

140MHz is the required amount by spec I believe but for 2.5 it's important to hit higher I expect for Saturn stability. I believe the 2.9's 140MHz performs better than the 2.5's 140MHz

#

Granted others have said it's not a speed issue and more just a wiring issue. Not really sure. The only theory I have is some 2.5's are more stable than others.

basically it launches the core, opens the OSD presses down > enter > up > enter to load the bios. So long as the bios is at the end of the list (which i think it always will be) it should work. Then it loads the game. I'm not sure if the delay is needed but thats what I went with

Still got my original Sega Saturn hooked up.

But now I wonder if its days are numbered.

I’m not as much as an expert with Saturn as I am with PS1, but for my experience as a recent fan, I see absolutely no need to use actual Saturn hardware or games anymore,

summer anvil

Does auto region work with any BIOS or do you still need region free?

burnt matrix
summer anvil

Oh interesting

mortal mist
#

one bios + auto region is ok

burnt matrix
#

it’s not necessary at all but it amuses me seeing the different bios per region haha

The hisaturn bios kinda irks me though.

Yeah I don’t use that

my Saturn can go online, and there’s an active scene of tournaments you can participate in

also Grandia and several of my favorite fighting games on the system don’t play right on the core

Yeah, still needs time in the oven, but it’s close!

burnt matrix

Yeah I’m ok with playing online Saturn games but the games not playing right is imoortant to get fixed

I'm dumb. Everything works fine now after renaming my bios from boot.bin to boot.rom

No special tricks or region foolery

haha that was the first thing we suggested

I must be dyslexic

Well it doesn’t matter, you double fixed it

yo so uh is this core public yet or do I gotta get the test builds?

#

#unstable-nightlies message this is the latest right?

#

still gotta go here for the latest?

pearl harbor
gloomy hedge
#

is it still like many months behind?

#

or is it following behind on the stable core these days?

pearl harbor
gloomy hedge
#

its always good info when someone asks about the core

#

I guess the answer is " its not ready " or "join the mister discord please"

pearl harbor
#

It's definitely in a pretty good place these days on the unstable nightlies version. It's getting to the point where most of the well known hits are in a great state.

gloomy hedge
#

I dont know why we dont just push the unstable version to public or at least weekly

#

because it cant be used for testing, and it is also old so its not the most compatible, I understand the point about regressions though

#

but regressions are only valuable for testing

#

and testing cant be done on the public core

#

I'm assuming at some point when the core is in even better shape it'll clear up and they will be in parity 🙂

pearl harbor
#

Probably because some of the updates have regressions, and srg320 wants to ensure the next big public update fixes any issues from the unstable versions.

gloomy hedge
#

makes sense!

#

if that is the case, "time to wait"

🙂

and see if its still totally messed up or whether my 3.0 ram is any good

Haha, I'm only kidding.

😛

but at least now I know to use the regular unstable cores route 🙂

Couldn’t resist huh. On my multisystem ram the current core is worse at running the broken stuff than it was before, so I’m looking forward to hearing if you’re seeing any improvements

EDIT-- I misread the question, thought you were asking about after Saturn development

uncut bison
#

Is there a guide available to get this core running? The games I put in the Saturn folder aren't showing up.

mortal mist
#

games should be in bin/cue or chd format , each game should be in a separate folder

#

The bios should be placed under the name boot.rom in games/saturn/

I'm sure this has been asked many times but... I've got an onlder Mister with what i think is a dual ram stick... I'm trying to get my Saturn core to work... using an HSaturn bios for the boot.rom games will load using the Saturn core from update all but I'm encountering problems like the following...

Radiant Silvergun... crashes soon after starting the first level
Panzer Dragoon... runs but fire sound cuts out halfway through the first level

Can I run the saturn core on older dual ram? Do I need to run an alternate Bios? I'm checking here before investing in 3.0 ram to fix the issues I'm having... any help would be much appreciated.

mortal mist
#

Unfortunately no one can guarantee that everything will work fine after a change to 3.0, we know of cases where there are problems even with 3.0

#

In most cases, however, replacing the sdram with a new one helps

#

There are also cases that the Saturn works ok with sdram 2.4/2.5, I would advise you to wait until the core is finalised, a lot can change

mortal mist
#

For now, he is focusing on fixing bugs in the core (games), probably the time will come for sdram too
