# burnt matrix Legitimate question, is the Saturn version of X-men Vs Street Fighter on the Sat...

I have never touched the saturn version of x-men vs street fighter, but I hear its almost arcade perfect.
But played alot of the arcade and psx port over the years.

For me personally, I think the main reason to play the saturn port would be when playing versus friends. It can be a bit annoying to not go back to the the character select screen and always go trough the "here comes a new challanger" process to start a new fight, also the winner of the previous match does not get to change characters.

Me and my friends has always, since the 90s played by the rule, the winner passes the controller to the next person, and the looser continues playing. We have always done this to keep our skill levels as close as possible to each other.

So a proper versus mode gives us an easier time.

#

Also I have managed to get x-men vs street fighter on the cps2 core to lock up and reboot a few times when playing versus. Might be an issue on my end though. Who knows.

The core continues to be optimized and enhanced though I must say, it is already amazing as it is but yet one thing I think needs some love with, namely Mulltidisc playability. Except for PDS, it still appears to be an issue. Anyone have any news on this ? Would be amazing to have the same set-up like on the PSX Core in terms of swapping discs. Plenty great Multidisc games out there that can't be played past CD1.

tall radish
#

Really frustrating getting this core to work

mortal mist
#

the way to run games for this core is no different from for example PSX. It works the same way. Games should be in separate folders placed in the games/SATURN folder and boot.rom in the games/SATURN folder

tall radish
#

But my games are .chd so they are all single files in the games/Saturn folder

#

Even though they are single files they should be in their own individual folders ?

#

Is this wrong ?

#

When I have it setup this this it autoboots into the bios

#

Then I click a chd and it loads boot.rom?

#

And goes back to the bios screen

mortal mist

tall radish

having all games in only one folder, they are treated like a multi disc game and share internal memory for saves

tall radish
#

OK I'm testing by moving 3D baseball into its own folder

mortal mist
#

one more thing , auto region requires unstable mister main for now.

#

if you don't use it , set the region manually

tall radish
#

Can see here region is set to usa, game is loaded from a directory and when I select the game it loads boot.rom and goes back to the bios screen

mortal mist
#

please check that the bin/cue version of the game loads correctly

tall radish
#

Here is something even crazier, I tried it with my other mister linked to the same retronas and the CHDs load!

#

Same bios and everything

#

And the chd do not need to be in an individual folder

mortal mist
#

once more

#

"having all games in only one folder, they are treated like a multi disc game and share internal memory for saves"

#

you can use them as you like , but it is not correct

#

of course they will work

#

in one folder , no prob

tall radish
#

I understand but the point is that them not loading on my mister is not related to them not being in individual folders

#

There is some other issue

mortal mist
#

yes , so your setup

#

core is ok

tall radish
#

What else can I check ?

mortal mist

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with retronas solution. Check if games work from sd card

#

I just said on Github that it's difficult to reproduce it reliably. Sometimes it happens during a normal attack, sometimes it happens when an enemy unit attacks my party member, sometimes it happens when a spell is cast. It's just so random feeling.

The only thing reliable about it is that it only seems to happen during the 3D battle animations.

I have no clue. I did just upload a new save to the github when it is the mage's turn where he can cast the blaze spell. It doesn't happen every time, and it also happens with other characters and other types of attacks. But it seems to happen very often with that blaze spell, so hopefully that will help him figure out the problem!

Right subdirectories? Aren't you supposed to just rename your bios to boot.rom and place it in the Saturn directory where all the games are?

#

That's what I saw on tutorials online

#

Auto works for me with hi saturn. I haven't tried shining force though

lusty rapids
#

auto would work with a single bios if it is the region free one. Not all hi-saturn bioses out there are region free

native dagger
#

Ahh

tribal valley
#

Oh? I saw people recommending using hi-saturn 1.02 so that's what I'm using

#

(Actually, I was using 1.03 before testing it this time)

native dagger
#

Are you using the unstable mister main too?

tribal valley
#

Ummm... I'm not very mister-savvy, I just run update_all every once in a while 😅

#

I ran it yesterday because I've heard the Saturn core got an update

native dagger
#

That's probably your issue then. I was told the same a few weeks ago.

tribal valley
#

Oh, I see... is it planned to have auto work on stable mister main at some point?

#

Or is that some kind of restriction?

native dagger
#

Yeah, that's usually how the process goes

tribal valley
#

Ah okay... it's a relief to know that my setup isn't borked, so I'm happy with that 🙂

pearl harbor
#

The last stable build is from I believe a couple weeks ago.

tribal valley
#

Oh okay 😮

pearl harbor
#

It's actually super easy to install it! Just drop it in the _Console folder on your SD card.

tribal valley
#

I think I'll give it a try

#

I wonder if it fixes a graphic glitch with Ogre Battle's animations

pearl harbor
#

That's a problem with the fan translation.

tribal valley
#

Oh, no. The one I'm talking about happens during battle. I think I took a picture

pearl harbor
#

I haven't seen that one!

tribal valley

That star effect is supposed to be applied only on one of the units

I hate that track it's so annoying. Lol 😂 I literally got rammed out of it last minute last time.... You got this! Play defensive and let them ram you ahead

It's been a hot minute with this core - any particular bios I need or can I grab all the different regions now and it auto selects? (FYI - don't need the bioses and don't need directions on how to obtain lol).

As far as I know you have to get the bios yourself, it doesn't download via update all

#

(for Saturn)

#

I have a separate bios for each region

pearl harbor
#

I just use a hacked region free USA bios. I also have the "auto" bios selected in the OSD, not that it's needed with a region free bios, but either way, I've never had an issue with the setup.

My brother had the Saturn, so I have less nostalgia for the os. I still loved playing, but never got the brain burn in like with PS. So I use HiSat, but he insists on getting the sparkle motion intro.

I like the unique intros for each BIOS. Saturn always feels special to me - having not had one as a kid and only playing kiosks.

Hey VG! Thanks for the recent video about mister on CRTs. That’s one aspect I’ve been struggling to get to work how I want for some reason, but I ordered the RGB cables you used and I’ll try those when they come in. Do you think it will be worth upgrading to Analog Pro IO when it comes out for increased color depth?

Just testing the last saturn dual sdram unstable core with latest mister unstable and I have no music in Virtua Fighter 2, but I am not sure it was always like this. Is it the same for everyone else? maybe a regression?

Hope they make another expansion, but I think they're focusing attention on a sequel on either an older Quake or Unreal engine.

I guess Alestorms "curse of the crystal coconut" crosses the stream alot, but also intentionaly, with alot of references to Donkey Kong, and even with a cover of a song from an animated dk show.

So I see that the March 29 update implemented external latching of HV counters. Do lightguns work now with the core, or does something else with SNAC need to be implemented?

Arcade ports get pretty saucy once you enter the 32-bit CD-based era

Is saucy bad or good in this context?

A shame that it isn't translated though. I'm kind of shocked that nobody has tackled that game.

Most consider the Saturn version of the game to be the definitive version of Zero/Alpha 3 because of its content.
