Prisoner of Ice (also Call of Cthulhu: Prisoner of Ice) is an adventure game developed and released by Infogrames Multimedia for IBM PC compatibles and Macintosh in 1995 in America and Europe. It is based on H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, particularly At the Mountains of Madness, and is a follow-up to Infogrames' earlier Shadow of the Comet. ...

mortal mist
#

No one has ever given a clear answer as to what affects such core performance with different sdram versions. As I see some with 3.0 have the same problem as with 2.5.

#

That's why I would be afraid to recommend buying the 3.0 just for Saturn.

#

mortal mist
#

My conscience does not allow me to recommend people 3.0 just for Saturn. "Buy because it will start working " unfortunately this is not certain.

zealous karma
#

It would be interesting to get statistical data of users with 2.5 rams that when switched to 3.0 didnt fix Saturn issues

zealous karma
# burnt matrix Have you tried running it with just a bare de10 and ram stick, not connected to ...

So the experiment was a fail. I disconnected the DE10 from the MMS, broke off the SDRAM from the MMS board. And tried it on its own on the DE10. When launching Saturn Core I got to the SATURN splashscreen and navigated to the games in the OSD. But when I load a game the Saturn splashscreen with the spinning pieces comes on without sound and then black screen on all games. So I must have messed up the memory somehow. Anyway I built the DE10-nano in my old OG Mister case with my old 2.5 SDRAM and it works. So not mad about it.
I´m having separate conversations with Ultimatemister and see if they can produce a 3.0 SDRAM in horizontal orientation, now that they also sell the MMS. So if and when they produce it, I will try it agian with my MMS.

stiff patrol
#

you shouldnt have snapped the memory off the MMS

#

as far as I know you cannot ever rettach it now

zealous karma
stiff patrol
#

how does the ram have a connector on it ?

zealous karma
#

when you attach the DE10 to the MMS, you attach the pins on the DE10 to the RAM module. So if you snap off the ram module you can still attach it to the DE 10. It is pre-cut so that you can snap off the ram if you would need new ram in the future

stiff patrol
#

thats from the docs

#

so that connector is normally connected to the MMS ram on the board ?

#

This is why i dont like these non standard boards there seems no reason to force this on the customers

zealous karma
#

I dont understand what you mean. The ram module on the MMS is like any other module only its in horizontal layout. And its hold in place to the MMS by small tabs to the MMS board. You are able to snap off the ram board as there are no traces damaged on the MMS by doing so

stiff patrol
#

it would mean the ram would be sticking out from the edge of the DE10 when fitted

zealous karma
#

THink of the MMS like a big IO board, with a ram module thats hold in place by plastic so you attach the DE10 to the IO and ram at the same time

stiff patrol
#

thats really strange orientation

#

the MMS has wierd ram path lengths compared to a "normal" ram stcik so its no wonder it fails on the tight timimgs needed for the saturn core

zealous karma
#

the ram and IO board are in the same layer so instead of sticking up to the top it goes to the side in the same plane as the rest of the IO board

zealous karma
stiff patrol
#

no its been observed by many MMS ownerrs

#

3.0 and 2.9 conventional has always worked for me

zealous karma
#

something is up with the MMS ram maybe. Keep in mind every othe core works as it should

stiff patrol
#

saturn pushes ram harder than any other core

#

other cores are not a good comparison

zealous karma
#

not sure what its pushing, but 141Mhz is quite high and thats what my MMS ram was running stable at

stiff patrol
#

its the way it access the ram

#

its doing some clever stuff no other core does

#

and since its being developed on conventional ram its only tested against those

zealous karma
#

I looked at the ram board and the chips seems to be the Alliance chips, so nothing weird there

stiff patrol
#

all the non standard rams have been having issues both the 4 chip and the MMS ram

#

its not the ram itself its been speculated the MMS has longer traces to the chips so the timimgs change

zealous karma
stiff patrol
#

yes < 2.9 doesnt have the same smoothing caps

#

so its more sensitive

#

thats why people are having issues with 2.5

zealous karma
#

anyway, I probably broke my ram. So when I get a new horizontal 3.0 I will test with MMS again

stiff patrol
#

what does memtest say ?

#

does the chip pass memtest ?

zealous karma
#

It ran stable at 141

stiff patrol
#

yes but now after you snapped it out

zealous karma
#

oh, never tested as games didnt even load and sound in the bios animation was missing

stiff patrol
#

well if you run it now

#

and memtest fails

#

you know you wrecked it

zealous karma
#

I think Im already positive i wrecked it. No big deal though as it ran as good/bad as my current old 2.5 sdram

stiff patrol
#

I think Robby was measning to take the DE10 out put a conventional stick in and use that, not remove your MMS ram

inner token
#

I think the main take away here is never ever listen to Robby waaaaah

stiff patrol
#

well memtest will take you a few minutes to confirm

zealous karma
#

hey it doesnt matter what he meant. whats done is done. I knew something could go wrong so Im not blaming Robby. It was my decision. Like I said I had my backup old case IO, USB hub and ram so all good

stiff patrol
#

and what memory is in your old case ?

#

2.5 ?

zealous karma
#

yeah, so I get same issues I had with MMS

#

But now Im more flexible in getting a 3.0

stiff patrol
#

My 2.5 clocked at 144 and was still bad. My 2,9 clocked at 150

#

and has been fine

mortal mist
#

My 2.9 is 143 , 145 and 146 , Saturn works ok , with 2.4 works ok

inner token
#

yeah I'm just joking, I think the plan for another horizontal ram is good if you want to use mms again. but you may still have issue in that orientation

stiff patrol
#

I dont think there is enough market to justify a production run

inner token
#

might be able to reflow the snapped off one

zealous karma
#

Yeah, I might do that and test

burnt matrix
#

I’m sorry that happened. I didn’t know the ram needed to be or could be snapped off? Sounds dangerous.

#

But yeah you’re right it’s designed to be snapped off.

zealous karma
#

No worries Robby, I was getting annoyed by the MMS due to the fixed ram performance anyway so all good 🙂

burnt matrix
#

that’s kind of a cool design

#

that way you can upgrade

zealous karma
#

the benefit of MMS is basically the IO are in the right place and it has built in SNAC so its nice. If I get hold of a 3.0 horizontal ram I will for sure go back to the MMS

mortal mist

supple vine
#

I feel like the MMS is losing its appeal now that new memory is out, a new IO board is out with 24bit VGA support, and SNAC requires level shifters to be compatible with PSX.

stiff patrol
inner token
supple vine
#

Oh ok. Does this mean there's no real need for a special SNAC for psx? I bought the SNAX adapter from MiSTerAddons specifically because I thought the regular SNAC adapter was incompatible with psx. But maybe that was just a MiSTerAddons specific thing.

supple vine
#

Anyways I doubt the MMS can be updated to support the new 24bit VGA.

#

The reduced color resolution and corresponding banding of the old IO boards really destroys VGA out IMO.

Are there any discernible differences between the 2.9/2.4?

I know the core is very much still in development, but following the performance quirks different folks experience is fascinating. On my end, with both of my setups having 3.0 ram, I haven’t run into any unique quirks. Performance seems good overall.

It just seems strange that there’s that much variance. Some people with 2.5/2.4 ram report good performance on par with 2.9/3.0, and sometimes the opposite occurs. I’ve wondered if there’s another hardware element that could impact performance.

Anyone else noticing XMvsSF is failing in a predictable way lately? It used to hang randomly. Sometimes at the title screen. Sometimes at character select. Often at the stage loading grid. Then randomly if you could get further. Now it seems consistently happeningō when your opponent swaps characters the first time. If it's not just confirmation bias since it's happened like 5 times to me in as many attempts, that is.

repro steps:

Enable 4mb
launch the XMvsSF disc image
Let the intro play full through. Because you're working hard and deserve a moment of joy watching Cammie attempt murder while a Japanese vagrant and a cat pointer on angel dust try to stop the Russian robodevil.
Once instructed to push start, do so.
Pick Ryu and Wolverine and Turbo.
Start the fight. Normally Rogue will come out first.

Result: When the first opponent switches with their secondary, the system will freeze

Anyone want to try those exact steps and see if the tag out is tripping it up for you?

I can get varying amounts of time into a round, but it always freezes on the change.

# cursive turtle here is what the Savegame Copier gave me. wonder if I need to dump it again

Normally I use https://segaxtreme.net/resources/saturn-save-converter.74/

The raw internal it outputs is what I drop in. However, this isn't working. I'm going to try to grab a save from my real saturn, too, and see if my old method works still for that.

drifting frigate
drifting frigate
#

Oof, I was hoping MODE would do an incremental backup drop, but it's the whole shebang every time. </williamhung>

#

OK, @cursive turtle - I tried it again with my own Saturn Mode backup and it worked. So I think I may know what's up. I'm using the English patch...are you using OG Japanese?

#

The steps I used are:
Export Backup RAM to SD
Drop SATBACKUP.BUP onto the SaturnSaveConverter.exe from the link above
Navigate to Saves\SATBACKUP\Saturn\Internal and copy the .raw file to /media/fat/saves/Saturn on MiSTer
Rename the .raw file to <whatever your ISO name is>.sav

So long as the game image on MiSTer matches the one on Mode, it has worked for me. But I can't get your file to load with the ENG translation of Grandia. I will see if I have an older JP-only copy to try.

brisk tiger
#

Hey gang, just trying out the Saturn core for the first time. I fired up Nights into Dreams and am having a lot of issues with it: audio channels getting stuck, video just halting mid-playback and so on. I have an older MiSTer unit with the 2.5 SDRAM module and I did see a mention that there are more compatibility problems if you aren't using the 2.9/3.0 modules. Are the things I'm running into probably related to that? Just figured it was worth asking before ordering a new RAM module.

mortal mist
#

If you want to buy a new sdram just for Saturn then I recommend waiting. Core is not finished.

brisk tiger
#

Got it. So it's still generally in an unstable state?

pearl harbor
#

Yes, it's especially unstable for older ram modules. The odds are very likely that is the cause of your problems. That said, as already stated, it's also a good idea to wait and see if those issues get resolved with further core updates. But if you just want to get in on it now, then by all means upgrade and see if that solves the problem.

brisk tiger
#

Good to know, thanks. I'd been thinking about ordering the Ironclad ITX board just to clean up the system and put it in a nicer-looking case, so whenever that comes back into stock I guess I'll just order a new RAM module alongside it.

wise brook
#

the ram they sell with the ITX kit is the infamous 4chip ram

#

aka A-RAM

#

aka doesn’t work with saturn because it’s too out-of-spec

brisk tiger
shadow merlin
#

They sell the 4chip ram but it is compatible with 2 chip. I have an ironclad with 2chip ram I bought from another seller and it works fine.

brisk tiger
#

Okay. So just any vendor that sells two-chip SDRAM boards is equivalent?

#

Or are there some that use higher-quality chips than others?

shadow merlin
#

I don't know for sure but I have bought 2 chip from misterfpga.co.uk and misteraddons and both work well, others may be able to chime in with their experiences. Definitely avoid 4 chip ram though!

brisk tiger
#

Understood. Very much appreciate the heads-up; I don't really keep up with the developments on the MiSTer project so I miss things like this.

shadow merlin
#

No worries, one last thing to consider: You'll want the RAM version to be 2.9/3.0 as older RAM versions can also exhibit issues. Probably difficult to find older ram at this point but still worth considering

brisk tiger
#

Yeah, I have a 2.5 board at the moment which is how this all got started

#

Tried to use the Saturn core for the first time and had loads of issues

shadow merlin
#

I had a 4 chip and upgraded to a newer 2 chip model and the difference is night and day

brisk tiger
#

Are there still benefits to having dual SDRAM? I keep getting conflicting information on that; some people insist there's absolutely no purpose to having dual cards whatsoever and others insist that it helps a number of games run better.

Is there a translation for it to teach me japanese? 🙃

burnt matrix
#

yeah the voice acting is 80s anime quality lolol

#

I have no idea when it becomes a game though

pearl harbor
#

Sigh...I tested the japanese version of Ogre Battle on the core, and that issue I mentioned earlier isn't present in that version. So I'm positive that the problem is actually with the fan translation, and not the core itself. I closed the issue on github! Gotta always make sure to test the original version of fan translated games! Lesson learned. You may punish me now.

rich violet
#

If it's supposed to work on real hardware, then the issue should probably be kept open, just say that it's the translation

pearl harbor
#

I have no means of testing it on real hardware though. I also suspect that the fan translators knew about the issue, because they changed the default view in that version to the 2D map, and the issue only occurs on the 3D map. When I just tested the original japanese version, the default view was the 3D map (like the SNES version).

# drifting frigate I hate the mods on that site. I tried to upload a hack and credited all of the o...

What really made it annoying is that I gave it a genuine review and commented that the translation is really well done and that the hack works perfectly in every other regard. The question about the bug was just one part of it. But they told me that all bug reports should not be included in reviews. Which...makes no sense? If there's something wrong with a rom hack, you're not supposed to mention it in a review? How does that work?

Wait a minute, my bad. I see it. Not as bad as that screenshot (the 3D map stayed stable), but the unit's position was definitely jumping around. Sounds like a patch issue indeed.

I've seen a response from srg320 on one of my suggestions concerning a bug on 'TokiMemo'.
'To accurately emulate the VRAM read slowdown when drawing I need to research this feature on real hardware. When I have a logic analyzer, I will be able to fix it. It will take time.'

#

Tokimeki Memorial, Whizz, Grandia (beginning), NBA JAM Tournament Edition (team selection screen) have the same problem.

It's true. Apparently when he left his home, he didn't even take a DE10-Nano

And I heard he was using a DE10-Nano with some special/custom software and probes as a logic analyzer (very few commercial products can deal with high frequencies or more than 16 lines, or complex triggers)

For Castlevania/Akumajou X, I can reproduce the issue the first time I launch the game from the core.
If I reset the game or if I launch another game before, the bug doesn't occur.

With the same config as yours on the issue tracker.

I'm not having much luck with the Saturn core (pulling down with update_all) and wondered if it's just me? Most games will boot up, but will freeze early on during the logos (tried Tomb Raider, Sega Rally and Panzer Dragoon Saga). I think I have everything set up correctly, using the the HiSaturn 1.02 bios.
I do have the older 2.5 128mb ram which I've read causes problems, but they appear to be sound issues, whereas my case is games freezing up.
All other cores seem to work just fine (including the new N64 core). I've run the memory test and it seems to do fine (50mins at 144). Any ideas what I need to try next?

shadow merlin
#

Older ram can cause a lot of different issues, not just to do with sound IIRC. When I had 4 chip ram most games wouldn't work at all

thorn pagoda
#

maybe check your cd images hashes? 144 is a very respectable speed for any ram, especially 2.5

quartz berry
#

Thanks both. All the files look correct from what I can tell. The fact that the games freeze somewhat differently (Tomb Raider might freeze at the very start of the Core logo, sometimes nearer the end. Panzer Dragoon Saga freezes at the same spot at the start of the intro sequence, whereas disc 2 boots up fine). I've tried a few different files and even switched between Pal and NTSC versions (Pal Tomb Raider sometimes boots up). So although the ram checks out fine, I did wonder if the old 2.5 version could cause problems like this, rather than a silly setup mistake I've made.

If we're talking about Zwei, then the comparison gets more difficult. I'd say those two are roughly tied. But compared to the original Panzer Dragoon? It's no contest. Star Fox 64 stomps it.
