If you use x/twitter search on st1ka, he had a thread of great saturn games per genre. Very extensive!

And thanks for checking sfa everyone. Guess it must be something on my end and well maybe just the core/memory lottery.

There are a few so far yes. Enough to keep me busy for a while even if only like 4 of them are games that keep my interest when I play them.

I currently play mostly shmups myself. Battle Garegga is my fave on saturn i think and not mentioned! (Does have an arcade core as well)

Oh and same goes for outun, but the Saturn version has a 60fps mode, making it arguably better than arcade.

That one of the few I haven’t tried yet! Played it on c64 in late 80/early 90 but well wasn’t to hyped. Then 5-6 years ago or so got hooked on md version. Then saturn and then back to arcade vanilla and also canonball mod. Recently got it on switch for less than 2 euro!

  • Fighting Vipers
  • Vampire Savior
  • Cotton 2

I have a high tolerance for jank so read my list at your discretion

USA Games

  • Amok
It's a third person mech game where you shoot shit with a bipedal mech.

  • Burning Rangers
A cute third person action game with some platforming and shooting. I'd consier it a jankier Mega Man Legends.

  • Darius Gaiden
It's Darius pushing the 2D capabilities of the Taito F3 and it does it REALLY well. This is the Saturn port.

  • Daytona USA
    The legendary meme ROLLINGSTART! racer.

  • Die Hard Arcade
Probably the greatest 5th gen 3D brawler.

  • Last Bronx
One of the greater 3D fighters on the Saturn. It's probably my favorite fighting game on the Saturn actually.

  • Mortal Kombat II
I think it's the best port of this game, and I also think it's the best game in the 2D series.

  • Virtua Fighter 2
You might as well. It's a pivotal game that influenced the entire 3D fighting game genre as you know it.

#

Japan Games

  • Aquazone - Desktop Life
It's an aquarium, nothing more to it but I love loading it up when I want to leave my MiSTer on idle, althought it will require some fiddling with the menu to get anything going. There are 5 expansions for it if you end up liking it too.

  • Arcade Gears Vol. 4 - ImageFight & XMultiply
ImageFight is a great SHMUP I think everyone should try once.

  • Assault Suit Leynos 2
It's a side-scroller mech shooter. While it reads in Japanese, the core gameplay is playable.

  • Final Fight Revenge
For a lot of people, this fighting game is mostly a curiosity. For me, it's one of the funnest jank fighters you could play on any console.

  • Fire Pro Gaiden Blazing Tornado
It's a slightly simplified version of a highly technical wrestling game series.

  • Metal Black
OMG, one of the best 2D YOKO shooters in existance. I think I like it more than Darius.

  • ||Playboy - Karaoke Collection Volume 1||
    ||Full Motion Video collection of softcore porn under the guise of being a karaoke game. No male genetals, just boobs and smoot girl butt.||

  • ||Steam-Heart's||
    ||It's a lewd SHMUP with a hidden premise. The boss at the end of each level is under mind control and you have to snap her out of it. The PC Engine version shows a little bit more bits, but the Saturn version plays better and shows less.||

  • Thunder Force Gold Pack 2
It has the two good Thunder Force games you should play before playing Thunder Force V on PS1.

  • Zen Nihon Pro Wres featuring Virtua
It's not the best wrestling game but still worth looking at if you're sifting through the Saturn library.

In 2.9/3.0 audio works well

There are problems with 2.4/2.5

The most common problem with audio in older sdram versions is that the music stops at some point

waxen vortex
#

So is the RAM the reason why you get scratchy sound on the BIOS and sometimes missing sounds (like in SEGA Rally the title screen is missing sound when you press start).

#

What I mean by scratchy sound is instead of the Zoom sound effect the Saturn Plays when the BIOS screen appears, I get a static sound effect instead.

When you go into the CD Player screen it makes a "Zoom" Sound.

When it comes to Sega Rally type sound bugs this is not the fault of the sdram, rather the core has a problem with it. Srg320 pointed out that there are many problems with audio

I think it's a matter of natural progression if you're into old stuff too. Sure you can emulate in lots of places, but when you notice the hitching, dig into settings per emulator, can't get the shaders to look quite right, feel the input lag, consider buying and modding real consoles, you inevitably run into the MiSTer. Especially with N64 and Saturn on the platform.

It's a price thing too. Scoffing at the higher price of the MiSTer when they think a RetroPie or other small hobby board and do the same. Clearly they have not put in the effort to know the difference. Those cheaper boards are fine for an entry level device so people can be like "Oh cool - I can play NES games with this tiny thing!" and barely touch it, but not for a person who knows something with them is off.

yeah it was crazy for a few years. I can get Pis at MSRP at my local Micro Center, but people still gouge online

mortal mist
#

I know a lot of people who prefer to buy pi , because it is cheaper and I understand that

#

Sometimes someone has a few games they want to play twice a year

#

Or take it to some retro event

tall radish
#

plus branded recreation consoles tend to be at or just under the mister’s price point and 9 out of 10 of those are a waste of money (I’m bitter cause outside of I think the new spectrum? nobody has had the courage to just ship a high quality fpga box with a high quality default core as their branded clone console)

naive whale
#

I mean I have a Pi 5 on my desk now. Nothing wrong with options

upper dust
#

I think the Saturn and N64 are the real breaking point that seperates the MiSTer from the rest though. Nothing else can do it properly (or at all) other than a high end PC with LLE emulation cores

naive whale
#

But the whole “this does it for less”…sure. You can get a base model Kia or a fancy BMW…they both DRIVE. But its a totally diff deal

upper dust
#

right - it's a matter of proper representation. I think inaccurate emulation or improper display can do a disservice to the games to the general person, but it just depends on how much they care

burnt matrix
tall radish
#

god whoever owns the Atari name now could eat analogue’s lunch if they shipped an fpga board in a nice looking case

I can load up my Steam Deck with emulators for portability, use a RetroPie on a trip for casual gaming on a HDTV, use the MiSTer at home on a CRT. so we should have an option in each core, Snac/bliss Snac/newpinout

warm mica
#

@tall radish fortunately I never had any Bliss adapters. I got the Reflex

tall radish
#

if your going to copy it, at least copy it properly. I really just wanted it for transfer pak on n64 I guess. Maybe I should build one for that. See how mars handles it. with those front side adapters.

#

I was going to get a snax64, but now I wonder if my n64 adapters would work with it either.

stiff patrol
#

bliss ist supported by Mister

#

Snac is

#

Mr Addons simply has a different style of Snac

#

the actual connection to the mister is the same

#

just a different adaptor is required for the SNAC

tall radish
#

yeah I think we all knew all ready. Thanks though.

stiff patrol
#

but you are making out He is doiung something evil

tall radish
#

I didn't say evil. All companies do it.

stiff patrol
#

its just his adaptor uses these HDMI connectors

tall radish
#

maybe you're not understanding..

stiff patrol
#

HDMI snac has been around since the start

tall radish
#

right as a copy of bliss

stiff patrol
#

no as HDMI snac

#

that just happened to be Bliss compatible

tall radish
#

then he makes SNAC work with a different pin out to get cable sales. I mean it's obvious.

stiff patrol
#

because he also uses the same cables for the Reflex

thorn pagoda
#

afaik the pinout is actually the same on everything except PSX

stiff patrol
#

you buy the cable once and get Snac and Reflex

tall radish
thorn pagoda
#

not sure about n64

tall radish
#

I was going to get one. but that psx adapter thing has me worried.

stiff patrol
#

PSX SNAC ADAPTER REQUIRES SNAX. PSX BLISS ADAPTERS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH SNAX. is on his page

thorn pagoda
#

afaik psx had to be changed because what bliss supports is really ps2 pads that don't have the extra irq line for justifier lightguns

tall radish
stiff patrol
#

You seem very combative with someone trying to help

tall radish

your not trying to help, freddo is.

#

no offence bro

stiff patrol

I am explaining that there cant be an option in the core to differentiate which Snac you have

tall radish
thorn pagoda
#

porkchops way too busy designing stuff he has to make to be making up extra things for no reason 😄

tall radish
#

well the reason would be for adapter sales.

#

If the original bliss adapters didn't map all 19 pins and he needed those. That would be logical. I guess I can open one and find out.

This will probably seem like a silly question, I’m looking to update my 2.5 ram module to 3.0 to fix audio issues for the saturn. I have the IO board, if I move the 2.5 module to the second ram slot for a dual ram setup will that cause any issues? Or will I need to eventually get a second 3.0 ram module?

tall radish
#

Depends on how the core, and possibly even the game, handles talking to the memory. I would say try it. Unless you're worried about paying shipping a second time for another module if it doesn't work, just buy both now. you need it for total carnage and smash anyway.

dim tulip
#

Yeah I think I will go with just getting the 1 now. From what I’ve gathered it’s more about the bandwidth for when it is needed so buying 2 would be kinda superfluous as of now, but hopefully there aren’t any issues that I encounter

tall radish
#

plus many report using a 32mb module is enough for that bandwith. Those have to be old rev.

lusty rapids
#

I have the IO board
which one? Because if it's Analog I/O (with the VGA port on the back) then you don't have the "second ram slot"

If it is Digital then you're good there, but also dual ram isn't really necessary for much of anything. The regular build of this core is the single ram one anyway

dim tulip
#

Sorry, I was typing in autopilot and thought I wrote digital. I actually own both but I meant in reference to my digital board. And I know they aren’t necessarily needed, it was more me wondering if I use the extra 2.5 ram if it would create any issues with the 3.0 I was buying.

lusty rapids
#

the second ram has no real effect on the first ram, and doesn't do anything at all if using a core that isn't made to use the second ram (i.e. most cores)

#

so yeah, the 2.5 probably wouldn't do anything. Issues may only show up in cores that utilize the second slot but I don't think that'll happen as long as the 2.5 still tests well

dim tulip
#

Alright awesome. Thank you for the info! Was just worried that it would cause some damage/issues. If anything ever comes up in the future I can always get another.

balmy prawn

Your bin+cue to chd method should be using chdman and a .bat file and nothing else

#

If you are using other tools I can't say what may be happening to your chds that would cause issues or not

quick sorrel

I used chdman with the bat as usual. My first rip of the game was a single bin/cue. I tried the patch on a multiple bin of the game and it worked.

Does anyone have a decent shop Adress in Europe which sells the ram that works fine with the Saturn core?

What are the characteristics of incompatible RAM modules on the saturn core?, does it result in crashes?

I myself bought this back in november last year, when I build my MiSTer. Which I believe is the same module, but I haven't actually played the saturn core much at all so far.

Even having sdram 2.9/3.0 there are problems with too quiet music, sound effects are sometimes missing , there are some crackles

small gust
# mortal mist core is still a WIP

Yes, the core still being WIP is one of the main reason I haven't tested it as much yet. Just tested some Fighters Megamix or it might have been Fighting Vipers, which sometimes experienced immence slowdowns.
Booted up Grandia aswell, patched with the recent english translation. But, it still seemed to be running a little slow as well. So I thought I would wait until it is further developed.

So glad to hear about the recent news that the developer is safe.

#

Some games were ok. Like virtua racing. Sound good. Now even the grafics are fucked up

mortal mist
#

You cannot hold a grudge against the core author, he is using the official sdram.

#

for the core to work with a single sdram, certain conditions must be met. I have already pasted here the author's answer about the 4C memory

#

If I were to create a memory with, let say with 6 chips and the new core that is being created did not work with it, I could have no complaints.

burnt matrix
#

The core is incomplete, things will break as they get better. That’s normal part of development.

#

The four chip ram was only sold by one person and it was out of spec and not official.

mortal mist
#

it should be pinned 🙂

burnt matrix
mortal mist

thanks

trim nimbus
#

Should also pin something like:

#

If you experience consistent audio issues, such as audio drop outs, it is a sign of memory issues. If you do not know the type of memory your mister uses, you will need to disassemble the unit to verify your memory is within specification.

#

Since some of the questions were from people who just ordered the mister as a turnkey solution.

#

Granted, for some reason I can’t figure out how to view pins from the mobile client so maybe it already is

It is funny how you can almost make a mathematical formula for any UI: Lim Time -> infinity Usability = 0

#

Some designer somewhere decided that seeing too many icons was confusing and unintuitive, so they decided they need to make groupings of icons to hold sub grouping of icons to hide those extra buttons that fill their users with so much existential dread

#

granted, these are also the brilliant designers who decided that a “chat room” can have unlimited users, but a “forum post” can only have 1000 contributors
