Also do you think it can be fixable if retrobit or core developers came out with an update?

#

Just says no access I’m kind of new to discord forgive me

pearl harbor
#

That's because the C button is the same as the L button, and the Z button is the same as the R button on the controller. They are not registered as separate buttons.

mortal mist
#

For me sega rally works perfectly

pearl harbor
#

The way to make the controller work on MiSTer is to just map the face buttons to their respective letters in the mapping tool, and set ZL and ZR to L and R.

#

Then just pretend that the L and R button don't exist.

naive whale
#

I didn’t experience any issues with it last time I tested

pearl harbor
#

I don't think there is anything that can fix that problem either, because it is an issue with the controller's design itself. Only Retrobit can fix it.

But I don’t have time to test anything more than like ten minutes before I have to move on to the next thing

Is the Saturn clock working? Tried to play Christmas Nights. Never played Saturn before so might be missing something obvious. If I load core without a game and change the time in system settings, then go back into the menu, it's always back to 0/1/2022

#

Launching the game gives a time setting, but again, no matter what I enter in game sticks to 2022

Core is amazing, my favorite games work well

waxen vortex
#

Most of the Saturn games I love run pretty much perfectly (other than low volume / scratchy sound at times). They play nicely and for the most part look similar to Real Hardware. I have still got my Japanese Saturn with the Fenrir ODE in my setup for comparisons where necessary but for full transparency, I haven't fired it up for months.

drifting frigate
#

It wasn't from srg. And it was just housekeeping.

#

He merged it. Or do you mean the one from over a month ago?

#

If you want a quick rundown, the color line register on VDP 2 uses bits 5-0. The mask was too large, though, masking bits 9-0. So changing the mask from 0x3FF to the correct 0x3F was all it did. Just housekeeping.

I remember having to reset with bin/cue too. Though I may be remembering wrong.

mortal mist

Each game should be in a separate folder, whether bin/cue or chd.

There is no need to reset after selecting each new game.

pearl harbor

All CD based cores should be treated that way. Always keep each game in their own folder, even with CHD.

#

So question on SNAC + multi-tap.

2 players just work with it?

#

thinking of like making a box for it with like the USB 3 exposed only then internally it has:

  1. snac->multi tap
  2. Multi tap to 2-6 ports (haven't decided)
#

or just use it plain unlike my other 2 snacs

cunning citrus
#

Games not compatible with the tap just reads the first tap port as controller 1. It is expected from the core to behave the same. All Saturn Multitaps have 6 ports on them, some games uses a second tap on port 2 for 8, 10 or 12 players. iirc you will need SNAX to have 2 players over snac. Only compatible games will accept more than one player connected to the tap.

zinc vine
#

anyone try new sega saturn controller, using snac?

edgy hollow
#

but wait, snax and snax64 are only 1 player or multiplayer via multitap
Probably unlikely to have 2 ports probably due to lack of pins and multiplexing (PS1 had 3 useless pins and multiplexing)

#

Not sure what the deal with Snax is, but Ultimate Mister also has a similar adapter and new Snac adapters that support 2p for NES and SNES (not sure if they are in stock).

#

I did purchase snax and adapters and like it quite a bit so far, though somewhat disappointed that the FC adapter still works like a NES adapter.

#

and something plugged in through the FC adapter and the 3D Glasses passthru still acts as controller 1.

#

On a FC controllers 1 and 2 don't need to be switched to use the 3d adapter

#

Saturn adapter from Ultimate Mister works great for the driving and 3D controllers, but it uses those finicky adapters found on extension cords. It partially works with the gun and will probably fully work when support is added.

#

I'm not sure if SNAX does anything different from other PSX SNAC adatpers aside from allowing for other adapters via HDMI port.

I noticed blue212's SNAC page has a new mini version.

I grew up with Sega; my first console in my own room was the Sega Master System. Later, I got the Genesis and even did chores in a toy store to play Sonic CD and Wonder Dog after closing time. I then switched to the PSX but quickly exchanged it for a Dreamcast and an N64. Eventually, I returned to PlayStation with the PSone, complete with the small screen. It was during this time that I discovered Final Fantasy and played it with my girlfriend, who is now my wife of 24 years. Sega holds a special place in my heart, though I always regretted not having enough money for the Saturn. I eventually got it around the time the first Xbox console was released, paying a bit too much. I had a good collection of used games, but some got scratched. When I brought them to the game store to remove the scratches, the games mysteriously disappeared. Among them were Story of Thor 2, Panzer Dragon, Deep Fear, D, Swagman, and Nights into Dreams. 😔 I never got them back, which is why I'm thrilled with the Saturn core for the Mister FPGA.

#

Blisster needs forked cores

#

its really a dead end these days

#

Snac and Daemonbites make it irrelevent

silk mauve
#

It's not, they're actively forking cores as they get updated and adding new stuff

#

But there's not many on board so it's slow going

stiff patrol
#

Anything that needs someone to maintain a fork is a bad idea

silk mauve
#

It's an option. Don't discredit options just because they're not maintained simply via the update_all script

stiff patrol
#

its not that

#

its a unusupported option by the Main Dev

#

its a poor choice requiring forked cores

#

and really offers very little for all the pain it brings

silk mauve
#

I won't disagree SNAC is a simpler option, but BlisSTer allows for really close original controller polling while also allowing OSD control without changing input devices. It's an option that a decent amount care about imo.

stiff patrol

Unless its a very specilaist controller. Daemonbite is for 99.99999 % of people undistinguishable

It made a lot more sense before 1ms USB polling was a natural thing on MiSTer.

Right, I don't disagree. But I'm just saying don't discredit the options.

Quads are pretty cool

high bramble
#

It's fun to go streaking through them.

burnt matrix
#

I think SEGA didn't make the wrong choice with Quads. It was very early days and the leading technology, 3D rendering, used Quads for cleaner topology which enabled superior surface division and for more accurately representing curved and planar surfaces. So I get that SEGA relied on the expertise of their former hardware partners Lockheed Martin to influence their decision there.

The problem is that none of that was applicable because early 3D gaming didn't subdivide or have the bandwidth for high-poly work. So the Saturn was saddled with a much more inefficient polygonal processing hit with zero benefit.

#

Such is the risk reward with being bleeding edge tech. There's a chance you'll hit a major decision point and choose the less popular direction.

I think saturn was not designed for 3D. Using quads is a tips to do 3D rendering with tools designed for 2D (Sprites).

Their decision behind using Quads wasn't bad, it was rooted in sound advice from the experts in the field. Unfortunately the benefits that Quads provided couldn't manifest in early 3D rendering.

all that being said, you shouldnt have to "load" the boot.bin. It just needs to be in the correct location, then you can load the .bin/cue files. Think of them as a disc and once inserted, you should sometimes have to hit the menu button on the mister and choose reset to have it load the disc

The Virtua Gun/Stunner works just by sending a little pulse when the gun sight "sees" the CRT beam. The Saturn then checks the timing of that pulse against the current position of the pixel being drawn, and gets the gun coordinates that way.

#

So the gun (over SNAC) is sending that pulse, but the Saturn isn't doing anything with it yet

#

trivia: this is unlike the GunCon, which does all the position calculation inside the gun hardware. That's why the GunCon needs that video cable - it's getting video sync timing info to compare against. TMYK

#

What abou non-snac stuff? The guncon2 I've used with usb on snes/ps1/sega cd worked well enough, will that be possible with this core?

clear condor
violet wolf
#

It has the sync signal going to it, I think, that yellow cable, is that enough in this case?

#

I had no idea they had different solutions for aiming on a crt, I'd probably guess they did the same thing

inner token
#

They'll both rely on the same mechanism in the core that's not implemented yet. Once it is either could work.

violet wolf
#

I see

#

Is there a big latency penalty for doing non-snac lightgun stuff? Does it differ from core to core?

clear condor
#

Maybe about a frame. I'd be more worried about the latency in your non-SNAC gun

#

the GC2 adds some latency and can have tracking issues as a result; lower-spec IR stuff like the Aimtrak and the Wiimote can be kind of laggy

violet wolf
#

But I can't snac it up right? The nes needs the zapper and the snes needs the bazooka or whatever

#

I consulted guys here and they recommended the gc2 for overall compatability, I need to turn brightness up for stability but I think it's pretty good

pearl harbor
#

I personally still find that the Guncon 3 is a great option for compatibility on modern displays at least. Works great for me.

violet wolf

Don't have a modern display, only laptop, isn't it a bit like a wiimote?

I´ve been doing N64 for a few months now and came back to Saturn. Is there something you have to do to get rid of the "no CD bios" message when loading a game? Also would it fix FMVs from crashing?

Are you sure you are using boot.rom? Not boot.bin?

Boot.rom automatically loads the bios

I know I changed from one to the other at one point, but its been a while. Did it change back?

Yes , boot.rom work works fine

This has been fixed

i've seen people playing sega rally on this core but i have problems getting it to start

#

is dual ram required for that game?

pearl harbor
#

It should work if you have 2.9 or 3.0 ram.

#

No, only single ram.

#

Dual ram isn't required for anything right now on Saturn.

viscid escarp
#

i do have the 3.0 ram

pearl harbor
#

Maybe try a different sourse for the rom?

#

Well CD, not rom.

viscid escarp
#

i have tried multiple versions though

pearl harbor
#

Just keep in mind that Saturn has always been pretty organic on MiSTer, so it's entirely possible that you're just unlucky with the game.

#

Sega Rally has worked for me personally for more than a year on the core.

viscid escarp
#

yeah and from what i've seen on youtube it should be working

pearl harbor
#

What bios are you using?

viscid escarp
#

the hi-saturn region free one

pearl harbor
#

If it's not region free, are you using the correct region in the OSD for the version of the game you're running?

#

Try manually changing the region anyway and see if that makes a difference.

I'm using a hacked North American bios that is region free. Not sure the version off the top of my head.

yeah I am curious if your saturn core is working otherwise, I would test something like Darius Gaiden or Metal Black

#

those seem to work perfectly on most misters

mortal mist
#

Even if someone has ram 2.4, 2.5 the game should run , the problem will be with the music

#

With ram 2.9/3.0 there should be no problem , unless the ram is damaged or running slow

#

Saturn's core needs high bandwidth

mortal mist

At what point does the game stop working ?

Anyone recently played the streetfighter alpha games? I tried sfa1 (usa) sfa2 dash and sfa3 and all would get stuck during loading? Wonder if it might have to do with the unstable mister used for n64? Running some update and rechecking. chd's work on emu and ftp should be set up fine, but will delete and re upload a working game to be sure.

#

Oh and i do have older memory 2.4 or 2.5, having the same sound issues with sega rally that Aktane mentioned

Thanks for checking. So update all didn't help. bin and cue also same issue (well for sfa3). tried a working game (battle garegga) removed it and re-added via ftp and still works so don't think it is an corruption issue during transport. Kof 96 did work. Oh well my ' real' saturn not sold so should be able to play the alpha games there while this core get the kinks worked out. Or indeed will have to upgrade the memory to newer as that def seems to help most here.

alright folks, give me your personal recommendations for Saturn games to check out and play.
No pre-requisites for genres, I'm open to trying stuff out. It just needs to be easy enough to figure out if it's not in English otherwise needs to be English.

Also NTSC.

Please do a ping/reply to me so I know you said something and can come back to check.
