Oh yeah duh I thought you meant scorpion songs in general

dire tree
#

im trying to think of a cool soundtrack mod

#

its gotta really pump you up while driving

trim nimbus
#

I mean, SEGA sort of already did that….music is a little more modern, but Crazy Taxi is pretty high energy start to finish 😄

#

to the point where I hear the offspring in my head every time that game is mentioned

dire tree
#

id never put offspring in daytona... thats only for crazy taxi

digital mauve
#

Soundgarden - Rusty cage is a good racing tune also proven by Road Rash 3DO

dire tree
#

yea i dont wanna put that either cause its for road rash

#

i want something unique for daytona

#

other soundgarden maybe

#

definitely not rusty cage

trim nimbus
#

sound garden to me is road trip music

dire tree
#

just has to be something not in road rash

#

soundgarden is a good idea though

Or maybe just the original.

Same way I feel about MSU-1 hacks.
Ironic that most of the games that have MSU-1 soundtracks are ones that didn't need to have them in the first place, because the originals are so good.

#

A game had a crappy soundtrack? Sure, create a better one. But Chrono Trigger didn't need any help. 😉

mortal mist
#

Yes , have the same feelings

fallow surge
#

I nominate Alice In Chains them bones for driving music

#

Or basically anything up tempo stone temple pilots ever wrote

dire tree
#

the intro song is good

sudden tusk
dire tree
#

I have to hear them first

#

I only heard that one song, which is good but maybe the others arent. Everyone liks the original OST better

#

I'll check it out later

dire tree
#

I agreee though I am not impressed by almost all MSU mods

#

the best ones were the remakes by that one guy who did the donkey kongs and stuff, but he spent a lot of time remastering them

#

he also did super metroid, not sure what else. All SNES games

#

he didnt do many cause it takes so long

kindred peak
#

Our own @polar geode has done some very cool ones. Especially the Mega Man MSU ones.

dire tree
#

cool... I admit I stopped checking them out from dissapointment

#

not sure what has come out the past 2+ years

#

there is definitely good things you can do with MSU

#

I just wouldnt be interested unless its an actual improvement over the original game

#

but with Daytona USA CCE Netlink, they changed the soundtrack so I figured I would take a look and see since its a complaint people have

#

intro song is great though

trim nimbus
#

nostalgia is going to be a high bar to surmount, but sometimes having an alt soundtrack is worth it just to have something for different moods

dire tree
#

did someone put the old Daytona soundtrack on CCE Netlink?

#

that would be a good idea too

#

that is a super nostalgic soundtrack

polar geode
#

I added Falcom Classics and Falcom Classics II to my 2D set today

trim nimbus
#

what benefit is there to the saturn version of those games?

pearl harbor
#

At the very least, they have nice visuals.

polar geode
#

They have aesthetic improvements

#

Probably the best Xanadu facelift, with the PC98 one being second

dire tree
#

add My Best Friends - St. Andrew Jogakuin-hen (Japan)

polar geode
#

Mm.. I think I will pass on that one

dire tree
#

add Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai Remix (Japan)

#

and J. B. Harold - Blue Chicago Blues (Japan)

dire tree
#

more big update to the Saturn list

#

added games, removed some crappy ones

polar geode
#

Im going to play Dracula X improvement and Falcom Classics 1/2 tonight after work

dire tree
#

you know japanese?

#

cause only one of the games in one of the falcoms has an english patch

#

Ys part 1, I think

polar geode
#

I can to a good enough degree to muddle through, there are some fluent people on here like @lusty rapids that are more capable though

dire tree
#

cool

#

certainly comes in handy for retro gaming

lusty rapids
#

I wouldn't say fluent, but I am proficent enough for vijeo james

polar geode
#

For people willing to put up with it I recommend using the translation plugins for Retroarch

dire tree
#

that would be great to have on mister

#

I wonder if its possible

#

obviously it needs connnected to the internet but man that would be great

lusty rapids
#

if you use a capture card, you can have some OCR software on your comptuer do it

#

but getting the mister to send off screenies to a translation service, and then come back down, and display that, would be too much for just the mister

dire tree
#

true

polar geode
#

Tolerable for adventure games with the latency

lusty rapids
#

I have a whole OCR setup for this garbage that I used for study/anki card creation, that ofc skipped the automatic translation step, but that's just an option

polar geode
#

Japanese PC games need more translation love

#

Maybe when I git gud I can help

hollow glen
#

i've got a save file a few hours in on the PSX but slowly losing steam coz played it before. playing as Richter from the start seems fun tho

polar geode
#

Its just a patch, if you have trouble making it work let me know and Ill help

hollow glen
#

awesome will have a look :)

dire tree
#

the HTGDB pre-patched download is out of date, so best to patch yourself for latest version

#

use the redump verified version of the base game "Akumajou Dracula X - Gekka no Yasoukyoku (Japan) (2M)"

polar geode
#

There is an english patch for Dracula X as well. But it lacks all the improvements from the Extended hack

dire tree
#

might be able to combine both, but who knows

#

could cause issues

#

they should work together to combine both

#

the modders I mean

hollow glen
#

ohh that Nocturne hack doesn't include the english built in ? dang

dire tree
#

or at least make 2 versions where one is combined with english patch

#

yea... sucks

hollow glen
#

does it make more sense to do english first then nocturne, or nocturn then english ? 🤔

#

same difference?

dire tree
#

but you can try patching it with both... maybe do the english first I dont know

hollow glen
#

all good will play around

dire tree
#

if its still in japanese then do the other one first

#

or if there are issues try the other way around

polar geode
#

Sometimes patches can be combined, sometimes not... I dont think those two can coexist. But I can give it a try after work anyway.

hollow glen
#

noooo

lusty rapids
#

maybe the best improvement hack

#

was the Japanese we learned along the way

hollow glen
#

i guess it does make sense for the translation to not work if the hack is so extensive in terms of breaking things apart

#

but would be nice if they could get it back in

polar geode
#

If I can find the time Ill try to contact the 2 patch authors to work something out

hollow glen
#

omg mediator batty. that'd be awesome

polar geode
#

I make no promises

polar geode
#

Looks like its been brought up before

#

They wont work each other, and the patches arent compatible. Bummer.

#

Huh, theres an English patch for Grandia. Neat.

trim nimbus
#

Yeah, supposedly the English patch version (Dracula x) does have some improvements in performance as well so it conflicts with the 4mb

#

I think Xanadu is mostly in English if they didn’t make changes for the updated Saturn version. That would mean 66% is playable with the ys English patch

pearl harbor
trim nimbus
#

Eternal blue isn’t finished last I checked

pearl harbor
#

Ah, I thought it was done. Honestly not as concerned with the Lunar games on Saturn, since the PS1 versions are pretty comparible, especially with patches. Grandia though is a lot better on Saturn.

trim nimbus
#

Yeah. Biggest benefit of translation is to un-work those designs.

Definitely doesn’t look like the first thing I would play through on the Saturn.

In this episode of PC-88 Paradise I finally play one of the biggest and most important Japanese PC games of the '80s. Falcom's classic , "Xanadu". The game is known to be extremely difficult, and I've never been able to get very far in the game. Will I ever be able to obtain the Dragonslayer and use it to slay the King Dragon???

polar geode

The bump combat is pre Ys.. kinda rough

next bronze
#

ouch. Some versions of Ys have it rougher than others, though.

#

but I'm guessing it's probably worst than even the SMS version of Ys?

polar geode
#

Its rough yeah, not impossible to learn or anything, just primitive by comparison

trim nimbus
#

Wish legacy of the wizard was modernized. It even had a port to the west for nes, surprised falcom hasnt redone it.

lusty rapids

falcom too busy raking in the Trails money while filtering out a new Ys every so often

polar geode

I like the Saturn Ys Book 1 and 2 port/remasters.. but if Im being honest the Ys 1 & 2 remasters on Steam are the best way to play those games by a mile

lusty rapids

yeah

even those are kinda rough nowadays at higher resolutions

polar geode
#

Its not a Falcom game, but I'd love a Falcom style remake/remaster of The Scheme on PC88

next bronze

ripe valley
#

I did some quick tests.
For now, no regression since the previous build.
The core is getting pretty solid with the patches/fixes.

Grandia FMV is fixed, as already said.
Rabbit works again.
Some moves on the Ogre game series but freeze later.

KONAMI collections (Parodius, Salamander) are broken like previous builds when choosing certain games.
Shining the Holy Ark doesn't boot.
Hang-On GP too. (EDIT : Transfer error on that game on my side)
Super Tempo no longer starts for the last 3-4 months of the main versions (at least on my side).
Necronomicon freezes with a green screen at boot.

No SFX, just music on Dynamite Dekka / Die Hard Arcade. (EDIT : Fixed typo, thanks Kuba).
Strange noise when shooting a barrel on Elevator Action Returns (incorrect pitch on the scream).

Groove on Fight BGs are misaligned by stripes.
Rayman's main map is missing a layer (Mister Dark binoculars with masking effect) and there is a poorly rendered stripe on Mosquito's stage boss phase.
Part of the Gouraud Shading isn't implemented (e.g. Nights and Croc textures).
Some transparency issues on Magical Drop III.

And I'll have to test the FMV intro again on Rockman 8 later, if the music is fixed (or not), there are stutters throughout the intro starting with the appearance of the giant snake.

there are like 4 different grades of sdram chip you can put on the official sdram board design as well, and there isn't a good cost:benefit ratio on the highest grade so most mfg'ers don't use it, some use the lowest and everything is fine for all cores, etc... hard to tell what the root cause is

I wrote a feature about all the games that hit PAL but not North America earlier this year ... might be interesting for people to check out with this latest MiSTer update: https://www.segasaturnshiro.com/2023/03/08/every-saturn-pal-game-that-didnt-release-in-north-america/

PAL gamers traditionally have been seen as an oppressed group when it comes to missing out on video games that are released in other territories — cough North America cough. So often, they’ve…

#

yeah i didn't update on that, but it actually seems to be a completely random issue

#

i thought that helped, but it just seems like sometimes its missing a channel, and sometimes while playing it just loses one

#

you notice when sounds that played before become silent or missing entirely

#

noticed it a lot on megaman x4

#

but then on another play, after a reset, it'll work for like an hour and then an audio channel just sort of vanishes

#

and sometimes remains perfect

untold spear

i think you haven't heard what i'm talking about if you heard some sounds more silent

#

you have heard*

#

if you want an example and are using an hdtv or crt that supports it, set balance to only one side in your settings. some sound was made to be not there or more silent on one side or the other. it sounds like eventually one of those sound channels goes missing or muted, so music and sound still for the most part plays fine

#

but sounds that would be louder on one channel

#

just seem muted or gone

#

i can't notice it in a lot of games

the two i do notice it easier is megaman 8 and megaman x4

Not super familiar but what's confusing?

dire tree

basically the naming and what is on PSX and what isnt

#
Kidou Senshi Gundam Gaiden I: Senritsu no Blue
Kidou Senshi Gundam Gaiden II: Ao o Uketsugu Mono
Kidou Senshi Gundam Gaiden III: Sabakareshi Mono
Kidou Senshi Gundam Gaiden: The Blue Destiny
Kidou Senshi Z Gundam: Kouhen Sora o Kakeru
Kidou Senshi Z Gundam: Zenpen Zeta no Kodou```
#

particularly in terms of Redump names

tidal raptor
#

Kidou Senshi Gundam is literally just Mobile Suit Gundam, I wasn't aware that there was overlap between both consoles, I can double check things though

sacred goblet
dire tree
#

I guess the Gaiden games are the Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story games?

tidal raptor
#

gaiden generally translates to side story, yeah.

#

I thought the trilogy of games was saturn exclusive though

dire tree
#

oh the Gaiden Blue Destiny is a compilation of the I, II, and III

dire tree
tidal raptor
#

Mobile Suit Gundam (PS1) is not Kidou Senshi Gundam (Saturn)

dire tree
#

the naming on segaretro vs redump is just super confusing

#

well there is a Mobile Suit Gundam (Saturn) and Kidou Senshi Gundam (Saturn)

#

both Japan

tidal raptor
#

wait in redump there's both?

dire tree
#

the title screen on Kidou says "Mobile Suit Gundam"

#

Mobile Suit Gundam (Japan) (Rev A)

tidal raptor
#

god yeah, okay, this is quickly getting confused

dire tree
#

Kidou Senshi Gundam - Gihren no Yabou (Japan)

#

Kidou Senshi Gundam - Gihren no Yabou - Kouryaku Shireisho (Japan)

tidal raptor
#

so the Mobile Suit Gundam on ps1, is a seperate game. And it has an updated version, Mobile Suit Gundam Version 2.0

#

Mobile Suit Gundam on Saturn, I see the box art now, is not the same game as the ps1 versions

dire tree
#

alright

#

yea thats the one that has a translation on saturn

#

I believe

tidal raptor
#

yep, footage matches up

#

okay so there is no just "Kidou Senshi Gundam" on saturn, I was looking at gamefaq to see the cover art / release date / developer, they called it that for some reason even though the art and title screen just say Mobile Suit Gundam

#

I think I'll just start putting things into a table to make this less confusing lol

mortal mist
sacred goblet
#

I Wonder if all component in saturn have been decaped and are implemented 1:1 like for Megadrive in the New core.

dire tree
#

SegaRetro.com is calling it Kidou Senshi Gundam so that one confused me

tidal raptor
#

I'm gonna guess the spine is written in Japanese while the art on front and in game is in english

dire tree
#

so now its just these two I have to figure out I think

#
Kidou Senshi Gundam - Gihren no Yabou - Kouryaku Shireisho (Japan)```
#

ok these are turn-based strategy games

tidal raptor
#

Kouryaku Shireisho is also an expanded version of Gihren no Yabou (Gihren's Ambitions)

#

but yeah if you're curating for english speakers, probably would leave those out

#

way too much japanese text

dire tree
#

nah im just adding decent and good games regardless... but separating a tab that has the same game on psx

tidal raptor
#

so I see a ps1 game in the Giren no Yabou series on ps1, but it's a seperate game

dire tree

alright so the two above is saturn exclusive

This teeny-tiny article needs some work. You can help us by expanding it.
Kidou Senshi Gundam: Giren no Yabou (機動戦士ガンダム ギレンの野望) is a 1998 simulation game for the Sega Saturn by Bandai that ties into the Gundam media franchise. Sequels exist in Kidou Senshi Gundam: Giren no Yabou - Kouryaku Shireisho and Kidou Senshi Gundam: Giren no Yabou - Zeon...

you still need this original disc for the Kouryaku Shireisho version since its an append disc

NOICE! Thanks bro .. I just got off work so I’m behind on the updates

#

This weekend belongs to Saturn though

pearl harbor

I will make a bold prediction! The next core update will finally fix Shining Force III's crashing when casting healing spells. You heard it here first!

@naive whale You mentioned Nekketsu Oyako is a fair beat'm up; is the Saturn version preferred over the PSX version (like many Saturn versions)?

naive whale
quick sorrel
#

Was curious as I had just seen the PSX version at a store before your video with the SS one (that I didn't know existed) haha

dire tree
#

from the research I did recently for my list... it seems the Saturn is better because the PSX has some color issues. However, the transparencies are better on PSX

#

something wrong with the PSX color palette at least on certain level(s) of the game

#

try them both on MiSTer to see

#

hard to trust videos cause alot of them are not testing proper but forums also mentioned the color

#

I would say better overall color is more important than some transparencies in this case

#

Crazy that that game was apparently going to be a sequel to AC Ninja Gaiden at one point.

polar geode
#

The Genesis Ninja Gaiden prototype kinda feels like that

next bronze
#

yeah. There was a preview of the cancelled Ninja Gaiden II for NeoGeo and it bore a striking resemblence to Nekketsu Oyako.

next bronze
#

There's the flyer. Doesn't look much like Ninja Gaiden.

polar geode
#

I.. hope that isn't Irene

trim nimbus

Haha

#

Is the nes the definitive way to play the original trilogy?

polar geode
#

Id say so. Trilogy on SNES is fine, but not really the same. Like a badly done face-lift. PC Engine version is interesting but unnecessary.. and keep away from III on Lynx

trim nimbus
#

I always start the pc engine and the broken scrolling turns me off.

pearl harbor
#

The SNES versions look pretty good. A decent, but overly faithful facelift. But the audio sounds funky and the controls are mapped really dumb.

next bronze
#

Much of the remixed music in Trilogy is pretty bad compared to the original tunes.

#

PC Engine version has completely different music and most of it isn't great.

#

I have a soft spot for III on Lynx. It tried too hard to fit the NES resolution on the Lynx and the music isn't great, but the gameplay is still there. Definitely not the best version to play, though.

#

Most interesting thing about the PCE version is that it has an English translation that's accessible without hacking and it's different from the NES version. Odd thing is that some names were changed for the JP version. I heard Jaquio is now Jashin or something like that.

#

and Bloody Marth's PCE name is Bloody Master, which reminds me of a Doctor Who villain. YOU WILL OBEY ME, I'M THE BLOODY MASTER!!!!!

Anyone get Shienryu to work properly?

#

It plays but orients horizontally but plays vertically but the controller is 90 degrees rotated or some crazy scenario like that.

scarlet goblet
#

Sounds like tate mode.

next bronze
#

I was thinking Shienryu doesn't need tate, but I remember I was thinking of Souky, which is verizontal. And I actually have both games.

#

Still need to try Shienryu out on mister, though. I think it does have a yoko tate mode (or whatever it's called) that rotates the screen, but flips the controls so you can play it as a hori.

#

Tried shienryu. Dang! This is not supposed to happen. Background and score display vertically, but enemies, ships, and lives display vertically. Background scrolls vertically while player and enemies move horizontally. Crazy!

quick sorrel
#

I haven't tried Soukyuugurentai on MiSTer yet but, I do recall there were play options. I cannot remember if there are any for Shienryu.

# quick sorrel I haven't tried Soukyuugurentai on MiSTer yet but, I do recall there were play o...

Odd thing is that Tate mode is still accessable from the options menu (accessable by pressing down before pressing start on the title screen, IIRC), but the menu option is cut off. If you press right on the first option cut off the screen will change when you exit the options menu and it does have tate. Thankfully, it's not messed up like yoko and there is an option to flip the controls. Sound doesn't cut off like it does in messed up mode either. Soukyuugurentai isn't a tate game. It is a vertical shmup with a horizontal orientation.

thorn pagoda
#

saturn wipeout is quite playable, though the audio balance seems a little iffy

#

also, this has to be the worst version of wipeout the framerate feels glacial

plush pelican
#

have you played the reverse engineered WipEout on PC?

#

it requires the PS1 assets from the disc.

thorn pagoda
#

no, though i expect thats probably the best way to play it overall

#

wipeout64 is quite nice, the control on the analog stick feels like butter and the framerate etc is all nice and solid

plush pelican
#

I haven't played that one but I heard it's much more accessible to players who like F-Zero handling.

thorn pagoda
#

nah it still feels like wipeout, just with really nice analog control

#

its actually comparable to playing the psx one with a negcon

plush pelican
#

ah that's something I still aim to try

#

gotta grab one from yaj

thorn pagoda
#

negcon?

plush pelican
#

yeah

#

specifically for Ridge Racer and maybe Gran Turismo

thorn pagoda
#

definitely worth the money

#

if you like wipeout anyway

#

i kind of consider it the wipeout controller only

I bet it controls better than the driving wheel contemporaries

thorn pagoda

yeah but not better than modern wheels i don't think

the realistic degree ones? for sure.

You can use single ram for both

Anecdotally I've heard its not anymore for this core but someone who has tested it more rigorously might want to chime in

tiny flare
#

I’m not sure if it ever was

#

It’s only with more recent builds that the SDram timings have been fixed and people are getting even close to consistent results, so it’s a bit of a moot point

mortal mist

I don't see the difference....

actually.... Resident Evil works better for me with one ram 😄

tiny prairie

Don't suppose there's been a custom build to fix the low sound volume has there?

srg320 is certainly aware that there is a problem with the sound

Oh absolutely, I'm blown away by the progression the core's made. 🙂

or that srg320 has made with the core, I should say.

what's the process through which a mister core gets chd support

#

is it true it's not actually down to the core dev but other mister devs?

#

once the core is sufficiently mature to be integrated to mister

open swan
#

zakk typically takes a look at it and adds support when the time is right. adding chd support might result in a lot of false positive bug reports if not done carefully

it's added on the software end, in the main mister binary

Saturn port of Zero 3 is great

I was obsessed with the Survival mode in the arcade original

I played the DC "upper" version but the DC controller will destroy hands
Now I have RetroPad32 cables for DC, but I still like the Saturn port

Anyway, Saturn port rules
