beautiful... (Please excuse the washout...)
wiiiiide
I now have sound...
oh, beautiful audio
Antonio VIllenas ram was the culprit
I just thought you were showing something visually. I didnt know you had broken audio before
was it only broken in saturn core?
yes, Beautiful AUDIO... aspect, scanlines, etc... not the focus of the video
next time specify when everything looks ugly!~!!!
Oh man, where to begin... audio was a mess, constant random freezing... you name it
yikes
is there a way to tell what ram board you have without opening the case?
i dont thinkn so
I got mine from zerhimeslf ages ago
if you arent have issues, I wouldnt worry about it
@jagged quartz I’m sorry to hear about your problem but I’m glad it’s fixed. We’ll keep that in mind for others if they report similar problems. So I appreciate you sharing that with us!
have issues with street fighter games
so far the 3 sf games I tried lockup in intro
saturn street fighter
Mine looked like this...
could any number of issues... like bad disc images, bad bios
My new one looks like this...
make sure your discs are redump verified and your bios is verified
I tried a few bioses already and checksum matches. I have not copied over the games to my usb yet
turbo: that's what mine looks like but I dont remeber the revision
What is? Antonio Villena? Please tell me more.
@dire tree Mine are from redump set
yes
@jagged quartz the ram board I bought from zerohimself ages ago
I didnt try the street fighters yet since I would rather play the arcade cores, but I do want to try street fighter the movie
ill try a street fighter now... which one?
does street fighter the movie work for you?
on the sf collection I could load disc2 then get stuck at main menu loading now screen but disc1 would lockup at blue intro screen, others say they ran it successfully
I got that one on the sd card already
I have not tried sf movie I tried alpha 2 and something else
I might have to invest in new ram modules
you have dual ram?
no single board
is there a reason people want to play street fighters on saturn instead of arcade?
from day 1 I was not able to get doom to run on my ram but others can but last couple builds I can run doom successfully
just for compability sakes
guess I'll have to keep my saturn and fenrir a bit longer
I wouldnt go blaming your ram just yet.... some games apparently work for some and others they dont, which could be from different ram or different anything variations in hardware
well, yea... until the Saturn core has better audio at least
half the games I tried the audio cuts off
I have a phantom chip one one of my saturn with an AR cart
other saturn I got a fenrir
I'm not impressed
me either and now I have a mister with some working saturn
lol jk
I know but I'm still not impressed
I remeber scouriing all the used game stores for a saturn back then it was harder to find the 4mb cart thna the console itself
Imagine not being impressed with a core still in beta
Since I dont program any core is complex to me
I am impressed by the core
I'm impressed with the saturn core, I'm surprised to see where its at today
I'm impressed that you're impressed
I have yet to try the n64 core. I guess I'm going to have to try it soon
too lazy to pull out my z64
and a bunch of zip disks
yeah I rember having to beg from firneds sister to get me a multigame hunter and stuff from HK those days
if its worth a lot of money id sell it before the core is done
Keeping my z64 I had a hell of a time getting one of those
seems like it would be a nostalgic collector item
lol yeah I collect more than I play really
Yeha I never got a dr64 sinxce I have a z64 but I also have a Krikkz n64 cart too
so thats why I'm not in a rush to try out n64 core since its in very ealy stages
yeah used cds
back then cds were expensive as heck
I would say N64 is further along than Saturn now but maybe its similar
and write speed sux, but if you had pioneer drives you can hack the fw to write faster speed
oh damn really? I thought it was way behind saturn since it just started
no, Robert is super fast at developing
the core will probably seem perfect within a month or two
some games are squished on my CRT screen though, but that will be fixed
some look fine, like mario kart
the THQ wrestling games were all squished with black bars on the sides
I run hdmi on mine, mine screen does have component as well but my regular crt doesnt have vga
I still hook up all my old consoles to my crt though and have to use pal to ntsc patches
@dire tree Maybe my sins have been cleansed?
you will now go to heaven instead of hell
It just blows my mind... I was so frustrated with the videos saying how great the core was, only for me to test it and have NOTHING but trouble. Dang Antonio Villena ram...
I know the core is very early, and the Saturn is an SOB, but this new reliability is how it should have been all along.
@high bramble Surprised you didn't point out how it's washed out. For some reason when I convert and export it's like that... but I digress
I'm in my 50s. Everything is washed out by now. 🤣
So... anyone in need of some ram?
Question (again), I'm following @tough star's instructions about for clearing the memory of the Saturn core from within the bios. All goes well, but it seems then on the core options screen the autosave, load backup ram, and save backup ram options are all greyed out. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Nevermind, need a game running first for it to open up the setting. Derp!
@jagged quartz are you going to pay me to take those ram off your hands?
I'll just GIVE it to you. Might make for good target practice...
Sexy Parodius seems to be freezing on the character select screen after picking a character. I think this is on PSX as well though
Are the ROM carts for KOF95 and Ultraman dumped and if so do they work on the core? Or what about the cart to backup saves?
Try using the DRAM 1M setting for cartridge in the core, see if they work
no that doesnt work. I yhink that and the 4M are the RAM expansion carts. I believe the ones for those 2 games contain actual game data
Yeah, some of those carts had actual game data on them.
Does anybody else get the "drive door open" thing?
each time I try to load a core, I get it
*a game
This list should cover the games that you can use the current carts for: https://segaretro.org/Extended_RAM_Cartridge
This teeny-tiny article needs some work. You can help us by expanding it.
Extended RAM Cartridge (拡張ラムカートリッジ) is an accessory for the Sega Saturn. It should not be confused with the Saturn Backup Memory, sometimes called "Backup RAM Cartridge", which, though looks virtually the same, has a completely different function. It should also not be con...

The [h] part designates that it's "hacked" (presumably in this case, to be region-free). There are cheat sheets online that explain what all those bizarre file naming codes mean.
Yeah I know about those 2 RAM carts, those work fine. I'm talking about the carts specifically for KoF95 and Ultraman. They contain game data and won't play without them.
Right. Not sure on either count…I would assume someone dumped them, but I don’t think the core yet supports it.
oh ok
cool, ill take a look
Does anyone know how to save in Guardian Heroes?
Wow, didn't realize this had an update! Has saving been working?
yes, save works
Man oh man!
But how? 😅
It was so hype when saving was added. It opened up the core so much.
I really miss those days, I go in and delete all my saves every day so it’s how it used to be
Robby, thy name is Masochist.
wizzo can write you a script for that
Yes, that is TOSEC's naming convention. The [h] does indeed mean hacked, and in this case region-free.
Robby just chooses to not replace the dead battery in his actual Saturn console to bring the old MiSTer experience into the past.
Memory Cards - Backup RAM
Since 2023-08-09 the Saturn core has the capability to save your game progress. In order to use the memory card you must first initialize it. Some games need an initialized memory card to start.
Start the core and wait for the load screen to come up
On this screen select 'Manage Memory'
Select 'Clear'
On the 'Okay to Clear' confirmation select 'Yes'
Go back to the main menu and you should be good to go - don't forget to set autosave to on on the MiSTer menu screen
and don't forget to open the OSD before turning off the MiSTer
@topaz cairn I might have misled you…opening up the core again, you can specify your own rom cartridge and set rom type to rom 2M, so maybe they will work
although my twice-dumped kof95 does not have a cartridge file with it to test
I have a friend losing audio in attracting mode for SFZ3. Single ram. Anyone knows what could it be?
yeah , alpha core 😛
It would be nice to have at least anyone else with the same issue 😄
Just played some of SOTN on saturn, worked great! Some slowdown in the dracula fight, but doesn't this version always have some?
They have. I've tasted them. Ultraman works perfectly. KoF has graphical bugs.
yes, there are slowdowns
To clarify "works perfectly" for ultraman doesn't mean "it's good" 🙂

Re: Lunacy - does the guy in the cell sound like Chris Parnell to anyone else in the EN version?
lol.. i didnt try lunacy yet but looked interesting so i added it
It's not bad for that type of game
Maybe Chris Parnell is just the "chicken" of voice actors, so everybody sounds like him?
Cotton worked great on an early core, need to try with latest
i guess i should add outrun for 60 fps version
But Locke from Lost greeting you in Cyril Figgis' voice is weird.
Darkwing Duck as the demon in the xbox360 Splatterhouse remake was even more disturbing.
ok 2nd place in Sega Rally 😄
Whinnie the BOO!
getting closer
Jim Cummings' voice is iconic.
Worth every race just to play it. I really do love that game.
What's really uncanny is how much Corey Feldman's Donatello voice in the 1990 TMNT movie sounds like Billy West's Fry voice.
Which is kinda just Billy West's voice.
I love that ERJ got to be in the second one out of costume.
Thank you!
COW-A-TANGENT!!
"I mooed a funny!"
like splinter
Was he in the first one in costume?
He played Donnie if I'm remembering right
But that might be apocryphal
Checked IMDb....yeah, he was Donnie in costume/fights.
6.8 for the original??? Go home, IMDb....you're drunk.
Bug! booted on first try it’s my lucky day
Not according to IMDB...
nevermind, found it... he's listed as a stuntperson
Cool
Just a sanity check, but does booting games from a NAS take a very long time for everybody else?
Doesnt on my cifs share
Hm. I'm at minute 12 of launching Sonic R.
PSX seems to be fine. It just seems to be Saturn.
something is definitely wrong 😛
resident evil, nights into dreams
RE better on PSX
for me RE/Biohazard does not work, I checked on two Misters , ssd and sd card
dual / single
Nights is a good addition
Berry hangs up , runs in circles
re is better on psx sure but the saturn version is unique
Yeah, all the costumed folks were. IMDb decided to hide that on desktop, too. Now you have to click tags.
😦
yeah RE was actually running better a couple of days ago
Poor stunt folks.
most recent builds i'm getting hung up on every cutscene it seems
Steep Slope Sliders works great
someday it will work 😄
Shninig Wisdom works great
Sonic R finally finished loading after 35 minutes. 🙂 Hahaha
And so is Sonic R.
By comparison, SoTN took ~3 seconds to load on PSX core.
Interesting.
It looks like I get an error on first boot. Kbd mode: Joystick 1
about to try steep slope today actually
But if I wait a long time, eventually the boot.rom gets loaded in and I see the Saturn BIOS
When I run off SD card, that doesn't happen.
Odd.
00f... not worth it
Tell me about it. It's a shame. NAS loading works perfectly for every other core. Not sure why I'm having issues with this one.
Try renaming your /games/Saturn directory on your SD card to something like Saturn_Bak and test JUST the NAS (unless that's what you're already doing).
Just for testing. I had some weird issues when I had both. Nothing like what you're seeing, though.
i would assume you shouldnt even have the same folder existing on sd card and NAS
or SD Card and External Drive
seen nothing but issues people had
but havent tried myself
Hopefully that's not it, but yeah... it gave me a lot of problems.
(And it was an accident. My image still had Saturn and the bios on it when I did a clean install and I totally forgot to remove it, like a cotton headed ninnymuggins.)
Yep, same problems, I'm afraid.
Ah well. I'll just unmount and use SD for now.
Thanks for the tip anyway!
NP, hope you can get it figured out eventually (or that it's just the CD timings in the core and it gets worked out). CIFS is magical.
I should have done it way sooner, tbh. I've had an active Samba share on my home server for years.
A friend of mine is having consistent audio loss on SFZ3. Wondering if it’s related do SD speed?
@umbral radish same issues you’re having right?
i don't think is sd card
Audio loss on SFZ3?
more ram
Is it named 'DE_AMIGO?"
My NAS is LilNASX.
Yep it’s probably RAM related
some people still have problems , especially with v 2.4 ram
I think my friend is having the same issues as @umbral radish
but the core is already working incredibly well
even now I no longer have the need to run my Saturn
Has anyone checked if Vandal hearts still lacks highlighting of menu options ?
I can take a peek.
Woah. I get some corruption on the data cache screen!
Still no highlight @mortal mist
thanks!
NP
The (R) Version of Bug! now always boots for me. I played to level 3 without problems. The non-(R) version still doesn’t boot.
I wish redump would use clear names instead of attaching (R) or (S) or other cryptic codes to filenames.
we still need salamnder 2 to work then i wont need my saturn
What game is that?
shoot em up game, Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus 3 game in one. 2 out of 3 work
when selection salamander 2 it goes to black screen
Awesome! Will check it out! Thanks!
I was introduced to the series by Life Force on NES....which is odd because that's also a really creepy horror movie from about that time. But it's really good.
I know that always tripped me up lol
Versus the movie that just MESSED me up (I loved it though...still do)
I have yet to see it
The best reason:
One of Tobe Hooper's classics.
Magic Knight Rayearth!
Life Force was one of my favorite NES games when I was a kid. Played the heck out of it.
works fine on core ?
Yeah, seems perfect to me. I own an original copy of the game, and can't tell the difference. Though I admittedly haven't done a full play through on the core yet.
I still find it funny that Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the earliest Saturn releases in Japan. And then outside of Japan, it was literally the final officially licensed Saturn release.
WITH the stickers...you magnificent beast...
Sorry to necro this - I helped with the prototype. The processing is on that one frame, but the border is always there
what other games am i MISSING
You could maybe have the border show up for one frame, but then you might get the same problem the GunCon 2 has on MiSTer, where the gun doesn't "catch" the border, and its last captured image isn't suitable for processing
Ah, thanks for clarifying!
the big objection to the border isn't that it's ugly - it's that it occupies FPGA logic
not much FPGA logic, but enough to be kind of obnoxious just to support a single peripheral
I need more recommendations
elevator action2
its on there
Clockwork Knight 1 & 2
Yeah, totally get the decision. I was just trying to parse the thread as an outside observer. I'm always up to test stuff with Sinden since I've only really used it for the game I mentioned way up in the thread. But yeah, makes sense.
Night Striker S, Darius Gaiden
oh, bulk slash (translation)
Also lacking Virtual On
Some of the Sega Ages games like Outrun
Awesome list additions.
I know it's a meme at this point, but the Bug games are Saturn staples.
ill add the bug games
here's my curated list
You do not NEED the sticks.
I've played it with a pad.
you need the sticks to play in its proper form
hehe
If you have both controllers enabled it will prompt you, but just disable controller 2. You should anyway.
ill add it anyway
Also Galaxy Force II and After Burner II in the Sega Ages line.
Also add Stellar Assault SS (translation), Sky Target, Tryrush Deppy, Metal Black, Cotton 2, Gunbird, Galactic Attack, Guardian Force, Dragon Force II (translation), Bubble Symphony, and Albert Odyssey.
There are so many I could list!
i got all 3 on there
I started a play through this week on the core. Only arrived to the village by the sea yet, but I’ve noticed at least one obvious bug so far concerning sprite transparencies. There was also quite a bit of slow down in the first village, but I haven’t busted out my actual Saturn to compare.
That said, the game is very much playable on the core in its current state.
Not interested really, there is nothing at all wrong with those games though
just kidding , i understand 🙂
I also have this weird thing where I'm resisting having any controllers with analog sticks
So that doesnt help
You should create a controller that is only analog sticks!
Give in and get a 3D pad
Although it only works completely correctly via SNAC right now, @drifting frigate has been poking around with what what needs to happen to get analog triggers working on MiSTer for USB controllers
Wasn’t really a thing needed by any cores until now I guess
@inner token and @noble escarp are the heroes on that one, but I'm definitely the annoying tack on the chair, for sure!
I appreciate you banging the drum on that all the same 😆
Regarding Virtual On, is it possible that it could work with something like a Dual Shock 4's twin sticks?
Yes, once emulation is hooked up to the HPS input.
It’s purely digital so it should be able to be made to work quite easily, just needs to be mapped correctly
Does it need anything special? I was always under the impression it was just a normal pad with everything rearranged, ie if I plug it into my daemonbite all the inputs come through
Although yeah I’ve only tried it on the core via SNAC so far
that's how the ps2 Virtual On games play
real twin sticks arent expensive i think its worth it if you like the game
Oh you mean like the ability to make those inputs to analog stick…yeah that’s not possible yet I don’t think
I don't have one, but looking through SRG's hps2pad.sv some of the inputs are dummied out currently and it does show as a 6 axis analog device. But I haven't looked too deeply into it.
The twin stick itself is digital though
So X1, Y1 (normally left stick), X2, Y2 (normally right stick) could be hooked up, but whatever analog it uses for Z1/Z2 is still waiting for those changes in main.
Maybe mission stick and twin stick are different?
Again, I have no sticks. I'm stickless. Sans stick.
Ah yep, twin stick is just two arcade levers, so yeah totally different to the flight stick
Well two arcade levers with buttons on them 😄
OK, then yeah, that should be mappable. But there's currently no emulator for it in the pad translation.
I'll poke around with it.
If i can find out what the stick outputs it might be as simple as just mapping in MiSTer.
I can’t remember offhand but yeah it just remaps the regular digital face and shoulder buttons for the right stick, so yeah it would probably just be a matter of some helpful strings in the OSD so people know what to map
@tiny flare Do you know what U/D/L/R map to on the rightr stic. Ah...ok
Lemme play with it. I bet it's as simple as a controller remap in OSD.
@tawny forge Yes, this was another game that I was having issues with in terms of audio loss
Thank you! What other JT cores did you have issues with your RAM? Will ask him to test those as well!
how do i post a list where you gotta click to expand it
So yeah, totally works right now. Just select digital in the OSD for Saturn, then map the joysticks, triggers, and hat buttons to the correct ABCXYZ, Which I don't know but the actual presses register fine. So if you can find what they directly map to, you're golden. I'm still googling.
Yeah plugged it in now, just to confirm
Nice, what makes that a great workaround is that you can just save that setup to a DS4 controller since it's probably the only game you'd use a DS4 for on the core.
Sorry about the dual mission stick confusion. But yeah, this sould absolutely work. I'm remapping right now.
wouldnt it be cool to have seganet support
Yeah I was pretty certain it would, the only thing I wasn’t clear on is if you can map analog to face buttons
But you totally can right?
@tawny forge The one that rings bells with me is one the Capcom games .... that Saturday Night Wrestling game (I've forgotten the name and I'm not near the MiSTer at the moment) .... a couple of the CPS2 gave me issues at the time, never really gone to check them as they're games I was never that interested in.
Yep
Thank you! Will ask him to test a handful of CPS2 games! 👍
So what I tried was:
Left stick mapped as D pad. Right stick Up = Y, Right = Z, Left = X, Down = B, then I did L trigger to L trigger, R trigger to X, A to right trigger, C to Y.
And it seemed to work just fine. You could probably use the thumb clicks as well for the the hat buttons, but I hate thumb clicks as they generally make me lose control while clicking because I've got rock eater hands.
Did someone try House of the Dead lately? Game works great here I have sound and I could beat the first level. Now waiting for light gun support
Yep! I did it with the 3D pad (way better than D imo) and loved it!
But wiimote/gun support will be so nice!
It's way less laggy than it was a bit ago. Definitely coming along.
Cryptkiller, too.
i need some good puzzle recommendations that dont have arcade cores
Puyopuyo always.
no light gun even on blue1's SNAC builds yet, is there?
I'm not sure. If the light gun takes more than 32bits, probably not.
But I don't have one to test and the build is now out of date anyway.
I can try it I guess, Virtua Cop 2 has been working perfectly for a while now
any others you know of?
Is the latest version of the core available anywhere publicly that I can just grab via wget?
Son is on my computer and I’m stuck using ssh from my phone
Weird how?
Does Baku Baku have an arcade core? If not, that's a great one.
have you tried beating him?
I dont think we hve baku baku core no
I knew I liked you, Andy.
Oh wait of course vampier has a script
I was curious what "weird" meant though. The earliest pressings of the game had a glitch where the first second of the music skipped. Later revisions corrected it.
there is a program you download called RomVault and you put the dat files in the dat folder, pick the folder with the games, scan, find fixes, and fix
you also need to download the latest cue files zip
ill try virtua fighter 2 its on my card hold on
Maybe try Puyo Puyo Sun, Puzzle Bobble 3, and Tetris Plus.
Oh and Baku Baku Animal
i added those... any more?
how long do i have to play or does it get messed up in the intro?
wow i just tried this core out for the first time in a few updates and everything im throwing at it is running like a champ
Cleopatra Fortune, Dero~n Dero Dero/Tecmo Stackers, Hanagumi Taisen Columns, Kururin Pa! and it's sequel Shingata Kururin Pa!, Tokimeki Memorial: Taisen Pazurudama
its sounds fine for me
latest redump
although volume seems kinda low
oh i have no sound effects when kicking and punching
yes, some games are "too quiet"
no trigger will work iirc but sensor won't. not all the logic is in the core for lightguns and some is commented out.
so no usb guns either yet. would be nice if someone figured out those interrupts, srg could probably do it in 5 minutes.
He hasn't punched me and asked me what's up doc yet, so the verdict is still out.
there's a pad interrupt in SCU and external latch in VDP2 that may need done.
He’s probably not
Do pads run off of the doubled VDP2 clock?
I know Mike has a mister
I know enough people who are known by other people haunting discords to never assume, but most of them don't use their own face. Hehe.
lol thats true
That being said...I use my own face and DOZENS of people know me. DOZENS! (thanks Devolver!)
@drifting frigate - what are you talking about? This is my real face.
Well, yes...but as I understand it ...when you're a turtle you LOVE being one.
Yeah. I mean, legally NO....but yeah.
Sadly, we lost all the footage for that day, so the stills and BTS are all I have.
I will always know Andy D as the guy from 1–2 Switch.
If you do a giphy search for andorian, I'll wave and say hi.
UPPAHCUT! UPPAHCUT! JAB!
@drifting frigate thanks for that pad disabling trick mate
im lookin to film a tv show but @naive whale wont give me his FX3
It was actually @wise brook
I looked, but, uh... you ain't waving in the gif I found. 🤣
thank you @wise brook
Hehe. "Don't you DARE drink after we just did last looks" - our makeup artist.
lol
You wanna rent an Ursa 4.6K? It's Netflix certified....for now.
😉
I know that the connection changed, but a lot of the DNA in the Saturn inputs is shared with Megadrive I have been told. Perhaps incorrectly. I wonder if the MegaDrive lightgun.sv could be a decent source since it implements mouse/wii/etc. This isn't suggestion, this is literally me just wondering if any work might be reusable.
nah I need to own FX3
the lightgun.sv might be usable but won't fix the unimplemeted stuff in the core.
I have some notes, I tried to get it working before. I probably need to take a fresh look at it
Yeah, I was assuming that there's a bit to flag absx/y on the PDR*I input but Saturn docs, as you know.... are... Saturn docs.
Plus I'm guessing you have to enable those inputs from HPS, etc.
No sense in every core accepting mouse/lightgun/etc.
Someone was asking about rom cart games earlier. KoF 95 and Ultraman. There's a collection somewhere googlable where you can look for the words bizhawk firmware to find specific cart data. Most images are patched now to use the 4MB card though, but if you DO need to use an OG image, it totally works with the 'load cartridge' menu option. https://youtu.be/uM0P6SrRLF0
save options are greyed out for me in the menu, but i've initialized in the bios and things look ok there. any ideas?
@umbral radish just so you know my friend is facing the same issues you’re having with the same saturn games. He didn’t have issues with CPS2 muscle bomber though.
as long as you follow the rules you won't get banned
I had to look up who that even is
Hmm, anyone try the policenauts translation recently?
Not the last two builds, but prior. @naive whale did as well, I believe.
Was working well.
Alliteration aside. Assonance assured.
havent tried in a bit
Didnt want to do the intro again and not be able to save, but now that's fixed so...
I did test save on it and it worked (I mean, it always seems to!) so yeah, go for it!
Been waiting to replay it since i recently replayed snatcher, but i was waiting to try the saturn version+
so, other than SFZ3, are there any additions to the other CPS-2/Neogeo ports that making having the Saturn version worthwhile over the originals?
[Deleting what I now think is incorrect info....DMA_READ_C pulls high and stays, but I think that happens earlier in the loop, not as part of the DMA read flag assignment]
Interesting he's not having the CPS2 issues. What revision of the sdram is your friend using? As I said, it was only a couple of CPS2 games that gave me issues.
Oh well, looks like I'll be waiting on the next release of the core. Still, at least quite a few games working that don't give me issues.
I am joining the Saturn core club.
I was so into Life Force that I had convinced myself as a kid that Gradius had copied them. I was too young to pay attention that both games were published by Konami, haha.
For those wanting Salamander Deluxe Pack, it actually is equal on the PSX in this case.
but it's not a saturn...
It took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out Parodius was Parody and Gradius combined.
Saturn isnt always superior for Arcade ports. Its resolution is lower, and sometimes things are just better on PSX, or at least equal.
The hard and fast "2D better on Saturn" rule doesnt always apply
Capcom Generations 1-5 for example, almost entirely better on PSX except for one game.
Check out the movie "Life Force", its awesome
Is there a master list of what is better on which?
Not that Im aware of, but thats a good idea.
yeah, there should be
there probably is for shmups at least
but I would like a full list of all genres
Dont get me wrong, Saturn is better overall for 2D than PSX but.. there is a list of exceptions that some folks might find useful.
I’m discovering saturn now after this core. It didn’t impress me so far.
Any killer app I should try so I can change my mind? 🤔
I'm a psx psychofan , but i love Saturn 🙂
yeah I know... I think Castlevania is better on PSX
I like to say that I love everything. But some stuff just sucks.. like ZX Spectrum
Nope, appreciation should be earned 🙂
All I can do is post my 2D games rom folder list
Do 2D games with stereoscopic 3D count?
I been workin on this list.... but some are probably better on PSX?
its just a list of what I am putting on sd card at the moment, curated
not a top hits list, but stuff to play for me. I should put some RPGs
but I am trying to leave out anything better on PSX
im still workin on it
Please let us know when you have it finished
I think you're mostly good, Ill see about checking into Arcade Gears. Someone more knowledgable than myself mentioned one of the parodius games was better on PSX
that wouldnt surprise me
maybe sexy parodius
or forever with me
i guess those are the only two though
oh there is 4... one PAL exclusive
im leaving out anything with an arcade core too
@dire tree did you have the chance to test the games on your list with the core? How do they perform overall?
Can't wait! I wonder if it will scar me today as much as it would have as a kid...
maybe most
@dire tree did you have sound issues with SFZ3 or Sega Rally?
hopefully sound gets nailed in the core soon, that seems to be the biggest issue
didnt try any street fighter cause we got arcade cores, other than the movie game which is unique on saturn anyway. sega rally havent tried yet
gonna try more games today
loved playing Saturn bomberman... harder than I thought I kept blowing myself up
I can't see
im still going through batty's list to add more also
im on PC so i open the image in browser
save options are greyed out for me in the menu, but i've initialized in the bios and things look ok there. any ideas?
Run game , and check 🙂
see some people looking for game recomendations as i scroll around too, check these lists out:
https://vsrecommendedgames.miraheze.org/wiki/Saturn
https://vsrecommendedgames.miraheze.org/wiki/Saturn/Japan
"It's how you play the game."
The Saturn was a mixed bag for Sega. It was actually their most successful console in Japan; not a monster hit like the PlayStation, but it beat the Nintendo 64 by a hair there. Consequently, it amassed a very respectable game library, full of unique, high-quality titles. On the other hand, it was a total commercial...
I'll look again, noticed cuz castlevania wouldn't save after i hit a room though
Autosave is on?
Recommendation lists are fine to start out with, but I feel like you should also randomly pick games too. Sometimes you find a game you like that you never knew existed.
Will do that once CHD support is implemented
Holy smokes, just updated my Mister and the single ram core after a week on vacation -- core runs so well! Played the intro to Burning Rangers and Saturn Bomberman without any issues and without having to manually load the BIOS anymore 👍
Frankenstein, Through the Eyes of the Monster. For all the wrong AND right reasons.
Messing around with odd corners of the library is a blast.
I kinda wish Tully Bodine had gotten an upscaled (upcolor depthed, mostly) Saturn release because the fmv was well produced. For FMV. But Elon Musk went to PayPal. (not the reason, but it's still so odd that it was his first real gig...Sega CD)
The pc version is fine. But I always preferred that stuff on consoles.
I feel one of the big downsides of getting into the Saturn on the mister is a lot of its standout titles are arcade ports that already have mister cores.
One of the upsides of getting into the Saturn on the mister is the surprising number of fan translations being released in the last 5 years.
If you're willing to invest the time (maybe in chunks) there are videos on youtube that show 5-10 seconds of every game in a console's library
Good way to find things to look into more
And stuff like SF Zero 3 has content that goes WAY beyond what the CPS2 version has. Characters, game modes, more animation frames... even above the PSX.
There's a lot of treasure on Saturn.
Silhouette Mirage/Guardian Heroes...there's alsoi Tresure on Saturn! <bung!>
Haha, I was going there too
Only three treasures on the Saturn
(You forgot radiant silvergun)
If no one has mentioned Vampire Saviour, it has a full character roster where the CPS2 versions do not
Do you know anywhere that actually breaks down differences between the ports? I have been looking for a reference and I can’t find anything.
AND the uncensored FMVs in Off World Interceptor Extreme. Because those poor Sony kids couldn't handle the swears!
I swear back in the early 2000s there were tons of breakdowns on changes and the missing frames, but now I just find people in forums talking with authority and no proof.
It's all kind of scattered here and there. I know I have a ton of knowledge on differences regarding the Crystal Dynamics games (and others) I've never written down. 😅
I used my Saturn for pretty much capcom games exclusively, but now I am just trying to justify the sd space vs the originals. Sfz3 for sure because of reverse dramatic battle.
For some reason I believed Norimaru was specific to the Japanese Saturn but he is apparently in arcade releases of mshvssf.
Did you ever get around to trying this? I am curious myself (and own two saturn multitaps).
thats why I use full sets and people act like you are crazy for that
you can't curate every single game you might want to play, only games you know of. Unless you know what every single game is already and tried each one
I do subscribe to the "throw out all football/football/baseball/wrestling games" (insert genres you will never play here, obviously), which in my case can often drop the disk space by half thanks to annual releases.
We got some confirmation from one of the devs that 9 player might be the upper limit simply due to the 32bit polling. Every controller takes 3 bits but there's also a flag, so 9 might be the theoretical max on the current state of things. Still, 9!
My guess is 5 on SNAC multitap, 4 on Reflex multitap (just to keep stress off of the USB chain) might actually just work.
If you're itching to try it. Hehe.
you guys have so many friends
Friends? You people don't play with your feet?
(legit, that's the most important accessory I'm missing....friends)
😦
Oh, it's nothing like that. If I want to play 3 or 4 player I'm covered. But getting 10 people into a room? I can't get 5 to consistently show up over Zoom to play D&D.
I like good sports games, but arcade sports is the best
like Neo Terf Masters is an amazing golf game on NeoGeo
NBA Jam is a great basketball game... stuff like that is awesome. NFL Blitz
Wrestling games are great too but mostly for wrestling fans
not all of course... some suck ass
Virtua Tennis games, those are great... there are great sports games. Now if you wanna throw out all the EA and shit I can understand
What about TWO reflex adapters?
The bit limit is on the Saturn side as I understand it. I have no idea how heavy the reflex adapters are on the bus, but as long as it's under 9 total pads it could still work. In fact, I think that's specifically what Pork was looking into testing. Fingers crossed!
You know what's funny....never got into most sports games (arcade asside...I agree that they are just a blast). But when I got my OG Xbox, a friend of mine from grade school was in Top Spin so I picked it up. We hadn't talked in a decade at that point, but he had gone pro so I was like 'Hey, I know that guy!' and ... I had so much damned fun with that game.
I remember Top Spin was pretty decent
I did like SEGA Sports simulation games... those were cool I got into NBA and NFL 2K games on Dreamcast
they blew away whatever EA was doing
Blue1 will set us straight
let's hear it blue1
it's not bits it's bytes. Here is the 32 bytes of Oreg when two taps are connected. 4 digital pads in 1 and 3 in the other. each of those 02FFFF's are a pad
so maybe you could get away with another one, in the emulator I tested it didn't like 4 on each.
Wow!
Thanks for clarifying!
it is possible to use more than that since 10 is possible on real saturn but whatever need to happen (i don't remember) when you go over isn't implemented right now
anyone can add to my saturn list of good games to play? ones that are not better on psx and dont have arcade cores?
any genre welcome
Where’s Virtual Hydlide?
omg
hydlide sucks but i wold still include it
I just dont want nto waste the paste on my card at the moment
I love playing virtual Hydlide on my Satrun
ill play it if we get a turbo mode
Gals Panic is peak entertainment on Saturn.
Satrun is my favorite system!
I know this wasn’t intentional but I love this and it’s what I’m calling the Sega Saturn from now on.
I LOVE SEGA SATRUN!

is it on psx?
I think even with turbo mode it would still move like shit ,
I don't believe so.
...o_o
Pretty sure Saturn was the exclusive console entry for the Gals Panic series.
Play Sakura wars
is it on psx
Maybe
alright ill add sakura wars and gals panic
Making an exclusive list or something?
does sakura wars need a translation?
yea kinda... as long as the game is better on saturn (vs psx) and doesnt have an arcade core
Does not currently have an arcade core.
no a full exclusive list just good games
and certain games
i dont have unlimited space at the moment on the sd card
so there is a priority
It's a solid Qix clone.
Virtua Fighter
VF remix is on there
Yum.
Shining force and die hard arcade
Virtua cop
Yep it’s easy to find the already patched iso though
cheesecake?
isnt that on psx
yah
Better on Saturn
cool
is it really
Si
House of the dead
damn didn't know, that's cool
Yep
Jaguar has one drawback, there is no Virtual Hydlide
It's got AvP though
Saturn is good and having a Jaguar core would also be good.
I can send you original without the text
alright guys what other reccomendations we got
Nah it’s cool
Oh but there is one
jotego is planning a better one... unless plans changed
Bulk slash
dont shit my timbers making me look up fake games
Is powerslave and duke nukem 3d on the list? If nothing else you can get some fun out of the hidden death tank games
no
Mass destruction is good
Pretty sure those aren’t on the psx versions.
If you like tanks
ill add powerslave but duke eh... its not the right engine
You could add doom to the list
Now that’s a waste of space
nah i got it on PC and AO486
You should be playing it on 32x
i got it on 32X also
Or 3DO
The resurrection patch I trust
32x hack is impressive
I mention it for death tank zwei. Pretty fun multiplayer if you like those types of games.
what has death tank on it?
Say what you like about 3DO Doom but it has the best soundtrack of all the Doom ports
Powerslave has the original, duke has the sequel
It goes up to something like 7 players.
those 2 games are the only way to oplay them?
Heh, seeing some rips to standalone with a Google search.
I wouldn’t consider them hi art, but fun for a consolized scorched earth party game.
yea thats pretty cool
my least favorite console port, honestly
duke?
yah
genesis has to be worse
lol
Powerslave is interesting for the lighting. Pretty sure the Saturn did it better
doesnt the powerslave steam PC have the saturn version?
Mass Destruction is also better on Saturn, by like a whole 30 frames
I dunno! I think the remake is some sort of ultra version built on the Saturn but it has pieces of all the other versions
yea i forgot the details of it
Well, I never had any reason to try it on the psx and going back to fps games pre dual stick is hard 😆
ill add powerslave anyway
Saturn version level design feels way more expansive than on psx , plus the Saturn version feels more like fps metroidvania vs the more straight forward ps1 levels and objectives
I forgot I wanted to play that game on the Saturn core
Isnt the PC version of Powerslave the best?
Never played that one
I dont think ao486 would run it very well, probably DOSbox though
PC version is different
I wonder if the pc version plays more like the ps1 or Saturn
yes, it doesn't work very fast
Another game that is moderately okay is three dirty dwarves
I made it to the second world of Bug! today on the core. The game is quite difficult. The "(R)" version works great.
updated list
what about japan wrestling there should be at least one good one
and golf and tennis game(s)
and some baseball... preferrably arcade style
Oh yeah all Japan pro wrestling featuring virtua is neat
You can be the Japanese giant ghoulish looking dude
And it has a couple of characters from Vf
There is an English patched fire pro wrestling game. Can’t comment to fun factor but that series is one of the more popular ones in Japan.
6 player as well
Did you have Baku Baku animal on there ?
yea
@dire tree what about turning your game list into a google spreadsheet?
Would make updates easy
Wow, Gals Panic works great. Maybe one slight glitch when you first begin a round but not sure if that is there normally or not. Been a hot minute since I played this.
Two ICs
Ok, guess I will be alright.
dual ram is needed?
We now just need a proper memtest core that pushes the memory limits just like the Saturn core does so sellers can ensure compatibility before shipping
Nah it's about ram with 4 chips
What is a good game to test the limits of the ram? One that locks up with bad ram?
I got this stick when the 128mb stick first came around. Haven't had any issues yet.
@digital mauve test with Sega Rally, Radiant Silvergun and SFZ3. If audio doesn’t go off you’re good
People are having sound problems with version 2.4
I’m pretty sure a friend of mine has 2.5 and he’s facing issues
Thank you.
Surely it can happen there too
Have the same problems on a multisystem, not sure what ram version that would be classed as though.
That’s completely custom so we should just call it multisystem ram
There is a fork that 4c (4ram chip sdram) works fine
I would avoid all sorts of forks though
cas latency is the change
Where can I find this fork?
Next to the spoons.
I love how my two years old boy says “fork” 🤭
The cat is telling you to fork off
Definitely 🙂
Audio dropping in Sega Rally so I might have an issue.
Bummer.
Really amazing to see these games running on MiSTer though.
Yeah! This is the ram bandwidth issue some people are facing
I got another MiSTer in an arcade cabinet I will have to swap out the stick later and see what happens.
Radiant just freezes while loading
I got antique ram. 😢
when I realized the A-RAM was the source of my problems I went straight to a 3.0 module
£50 well spent imo
Really hoping my other stick is better but I am fairly certain I got it from eBay.
Otherwise I will just buy a new stick and toss this one in the box with my 32mb stick.
But not as good as 3DO!
I suggest waiting for the core to stabilize more before throwing RAM in the drawer and buying new ram
Fair point.
The smartest man in Wisconsin is obv @pearl harbor
Antonio Vilena 4C?
yes, that's what I call it
Haha, yeah unfortunate, I really wish he’d stop selling it, or at least add a massive disclaimer to his store page…
I thought that 32mb stick was going to be all that I ever needed.
Whoa. Whoa. WHOA.
Another MiSTer club member from Wisconsin?
Great. Now there's three of you. Hear that, @sudden tusk ?
Can you pool your resources together and get him a computer that runs fightcade?
Can you build computers out of roadkill? Because they have a lot.
I refuse to believe he doesn’t have one, surely garbage ram hogging electron apps like discord take more resources to run than that
We multiply when you throw beer on us.
You all can have a MiSTer meetup at the Dells. 😁
A bunch of guys getting together and pulling out their MiSTers to play together huh? Sounds good to me
is this like someone fighting over whether pizza hut or dominos is better?
You know Little Caesars is best

Bring it on nerds !
I showed you my MiSTer, pls respond
Are making a circle jerk joke? Oh, you
I would never
Yeah bro I ain’t into that ..

just to confirm, are we back to using boot.rom for the core or still have to use boot.bin?
We are back to boot.rom
great thank you
My pleasure, excited for you to enjoy the Saturn core 🍻
Japan v1.01 still the best BIOS?
No, Hi-Saturn or the No-region ones
oh ok
I personally used a hacked region free Hi-Saturn 1.02 BIOS.
I use the hacked US/WW BIOS so it autoboots
Had no issues related to the BIOS
I don’t use a bios because I am above such mortal needs
@polar geode may I dm you regarding that hack?
Robby doesnt need to boot games, he grinds the CDs into a powder and snorts them
Sure, DMs open
It’s not an issue so please do not worry, but in the future don’t ask for copyrighted materials.
You didn’t technically since you asked to DM her lol.
Only the most vintage of games with huge detailed sprites.
Footage of @burnt matrix booting up his favorite game Bug!
Bug! was pretty cool when you were a kid at toys r us and saw the Saturn for the first time at a demo kiosk
You'll get no Bug! hate from me. I'm launch day Saturn OG.
I said it before, and Ill say it again
The only Bug game Ill play on Saturn is Super Tempo
more like Super Tepid
Thats an adult word Robby, Im impressed
Batty's favorite game is Mario Party 2.
Lies, slander.
Everyone knows 10 is best.
Remember when everyone loved the Sega Saturn and it had an awesome library of games?
I don’t.

I had a virtual boy, but when I realized it was giving me brain cancer I traded it for a saturn. I dont regret this decision
i just want to know how to mail srg some shitty ram for testing
@robby got the goods hes the connect
I’m just gonna cut letters out of a magazine and mail you a letter at this point in time 🤣
lol
This could be some fun on discord lol
lmao
Amazing.
Sorry @sudden tusk
Why you gotta be dat way?
in the 90s Saturn was looked down upon
it didnt last long and most games never came to the U.S.
PSX destroyed it
its much more appreciated now
I wonder if there is a way to get NetLink and SegaNet support
peer 2 peer
It was rough being a Sega fan back then.
Though I admittedly was a fan of all the consoles.
My condolences to your friend.
lol
yea we never played it really
he had 2 games
we didnt play much saturn either cause I only remember him having Panzer and Daytona
For that generation, I had a 3DO first, then got an N64, then my PS1, and lastly my Saturn. I would have bought my Saturn sooner, but my friend got one on launch day, so I played it at his house a lot.
I’ve never seen a Saturn irl
I got the 3DO first (when it was first released 😦 ), but got a Saturn later (Model 2). Wasn't thrilled witht he release of the Saturn, so I held off.
I stupidly sold my 3DO eventually for $500, but I wish I hadn't...
why? thats a good price
My whole area was nintendo into PlayStation into n64
I traded my 3DO with all the games for a computer... but the computer was worse than the one I already had so it was pointless
I think me and maybe like 4 other kids I knew had a genesis at one point
...unless you paid $700 for it like I did. 🤣
I know, but it's the only console I ever sold. I know I could just buy a used one now, but it wouldn't be my 3DO!
Oh I did.
I got mine when it was half price
Brother from another mother! 😄
my dad would have never spent $700 on that lol
Couldn't help myself. Walked into Electronics Boutique, saw it, and "Oooo... what's that?"
yea it was amazing when it came out
All we had was Crash'n Burn and the sampler CD!
I had just joined the Air Force, had no other financial obligations. Why the hell not, eh? 😉
Crash'n Burn was actually fun.
Yeah, I always liked the way it looked.
I love the weird grey and indigo of the JP version
I hope we get a 3DO core one day
Loved watching that Mr. Freeze episode of Batman The Animated Series on it! And Two Stupid Dogs!
I watched that so many times. 🤣
what disc is that batman on?
The Sampler CD
The REAL Sampler CD
Came with the Panasonic FZ-1, at least. Not sure about the FZ-10 or the Sanyo or Goldstar models.
yea mine was fz-1 and came with a sampler
I remember we also had a photo CD made with a bunch of our old photos on it, just to test it on the 3DO's photo CD capabilities.
i guess I forgot it was on the disc or never watched it
It was awesome back in the day to look at your photos on your TV!
yea that was cool
Seems really cheesy today, but back then, that was neat stuff.
Poor @naive whale is missing out on all this 3DO talk!
lol
I spent $70 for Way of the Warrior at Walmart
and you dont wanna know what I had to do for that 70 bucks
i had to sell my gameboy games... al ot of them
worst trade ever
I played Way of the Warrior on a demo disc, so I avoided it!
Got me Super Turbo instead and bought the official Capcom 6 button controller for it.
Road Rash was by far my favorite game on the 3DO... but I had a lot of fun with Twisted with my brother and friends back then. Such a wacky game.
I suppose we should probably take this into the 3DO thread at this point. 😅
That one took me a long time to get used to... but once I did, it was so much better than anything else available.
is road rash really the best version on 3DO compare3d to Saturn and PSX? The performance is probably the worst on 3DO
if we had a core with turbo option that wouldnt matter though
Best version is Win95 I believe
ah true
probably doesnt run good enough on AO486
yea it needs pentium so wont be playable
...and the very first Need for Speed (3DO kicked off the franchise). That was fun.
yea I played the hell oiut of NFS and Road Rash
Maybe off topic (hope not) but I played a nfs demo from some cover disc on pc many years ago where you race through a north east small town in fall (I remember a small covered wooden bridge, and lots of leaves falling). Is that version on the Saturn?
hmm
not sure but id be curious to know
wait I dont see Need For Speed in my saturn collection
I thought there was at least one of them on Saturn
Sounds like Hot Pursuit, but yeah... only the first NFS game was on Saturn.
oh... must have a different name
Road and Track Presents!
Road & Track Presents - The Need for Speed (USA)
yea just found it
adding it to the sd card now
is it better on PSX?
I've only ever played the 3DO and PS1 versions.
probably better on ps1
Hot pursuit is definitely too new, this would have been 94ish…hmm that would have to be the original then according to wiki
If it was 94, then yeah it would have to be the original.
My sense of time might be messed up though oh well, worst case is I have an excuse to boot up the Saturn version on the core
lol
so how mature is the Saturn core now? I've been waiting to get into it, as I'm not that familiar with Saturn games (so I might not be able to tell if something is a core limitation)
is it like the N64 core, where many things work but it is far from done?
pretty much
just has audio issues alot of times
or half the time
its worth getting into now
although no CHD support yet
so you dont wanna load up a full set
you wanna temporarily curate a list of games
Majority of games are at least in a playable state. Some games still don't work, and there are still miscellaneous issues, but in most cases you should be able to play the game.
Thanks so much! Exactly what I was looking for. Is there a .bin file available that allows the use of a 1st or 3rd party save backup carts?
That I don't know. Like the Action Replay Plus or whatever? I haven't looked for them. Let me check my sources for bizhawk.
Haha I fell asleep
Though I'm guessing it won't work since the ROM area is readonly.
we had a good 3DO talk
you missed it... Robert announced he is making a 3DO core in 2024
Yeah, quick testing looks like it isn't compatible. Makes sense in this setup though. It doesn't load the boot loader for Action Replay when I try either, just reboots to system.
Not necessarily the Action Replay, but the Innovation 8Meg memory cart or the Official Sega Backup RAM cart
Doesn't matter, I don't think they're goingo to work as you can't add system RAM on the ROM image, just the rom data from what I'm seeing.
It's intended for pulling data for the games that need it. Not sure how implementation will go with adding writeback to it.
But currently it does not seem to work.
Someone may know more than me (undoubtedly a lot of people in this thread do), though. But that's what I'm interpreting.
The Beautiful Game
heh\
Too cruel for words!
I've been out of the loop too long about the sega saturn dev and I am srg patreon....
But
Are we to a point where a decent chunk of games are able to be completed?
Yeah, there are quite a few that are completeable.
Especially since save support was added. It opened up a lot of games.
nice.I saw some videos of the core and many games have smooth 2d graphics ... makes me want to try it
Ive only ever played a handful of Sega titles like Daytona and VF on the Saturn
