That's what I've got. Sega Rally Championship working away perfectly here on my Multisystem

jagged quartz
#

beautiful... (Please excuse the washout...)

burnt matrix
#

wiiiiide

dire tree
#

what is beautiful about that

#

color, scanlines, and aspect ratio do not look good!

jagged quartz
#

I now have sound...

dire tree
#

oh, beautiful audio

jagged quartz
#

Antonio VIllenas ram was the culprit

dire tree
#

I just thought you were showing something visually. I didnt know you had broken audio before

#

was it only broken in saturn core?

jagged quartz
#

yes, Beautiful AUDIO... aspect, scanlines, etc... not the focus of the video

dire tree
#

next time specify when everything looks ugly!~!!!

jagged quartz
dire tree
#

yikes

amber lichen
#

is there a way to tell what ram board you have without opening the case?

dire tree
#

i dont thinkn so

amber lichen
#

I got mine from zerhimeslf ages ago

dire tree
#

if you arent have issues, I wouldnt worry about it

burnt matrix
#

@jagged quartz I’m sorry to hear about your problem but I’m glad it’s fixed. We’ll keep that in mind for others if they report similar problems. So I appreciate you sharing that with us!

amber lichen
#

have issues with street fighter games

#

so far the 3 sf games I tried lockup in intro

dire tree
#

saturn street fighter

jagged quartz
#

Mine looked like this...

amber lichen
#

yeah

#

I remeber mine was a blue board with 2 chips

wise brook
#

the mark of the beast

dire tree
#

could any number of issues... like bad disc images, bad bios

jagged quartz
#

My new one looks like this...

dire tree
#

make sure your discs are redump verified and your bios is verified

amber lichen
#

I tried a few bioses already and checksum matches. I have not copied over the games to my usb yet

#

turbo: that's what mine looks like but I dont remeber the revision

jagged quartz
amber lichen
#

@dire tree Mine are from redump set

amber lichen
#

@jagged quartz the ram board I bought from zerohimself ages ago

dire tree
#

I didnt try the street fighters yet since I would rather play the arcade cores, but I do want to try street fighter the movie

#

ill try a street fighter now... which one?

#

does street fighter the movie work for you?

amber lichen
#

on the sf collection I could load disc2 then get stuck at main menu loading now screen but disc1 would lockup at blue intro screen, others say they ran it successfully

dire tree
#

I got that one on the sd card already

amber lichen
#

I have not tried sf movie I tried alpha 2 and something else

#

I might have to invest in new ram modules

dire tree
#

you have dual ram?

amber lichen
#

no single board

dire tree
#

is there a reason people want to play street fighters on saturn instead of arcade?

amber lichen
#

from day 1 I was not able to get doom to run on my ram but others can but last couple builds I can run doom successfully

#

just for compability sakes

#

guess I'll have to keep my saturn and fenrir a bit longer

dire tree
#

I wouldnt go blaming your ram just yet.... some games apparently work for some and others they dont, which could be from different ram or different anything variations in hardware

#

well, yea... until the Saturn core has better audio at least

#

half the games I tried the audio cuts off

amber lichen
#

I have a phantom chip one one of my saturn with an AR cart

#

other saturn I got a fenrir

dire tree
#

I'm not impressed

amber lichen
#

me either and now I have a mister with some working saturn

dire tree
#

lol jk

amber lichen
#

I know but I'm still not impressed

dire tree
#

the core just isnt done yet

#

i imagine its a very difficult core

amber lichen
#

I remeber scouriing all the used game stores for a saturn back then it was harder to find the 4mb cart thna the console itself

polar geode
#

Imagine not being impressed with a core still in beta

amber lichen
#

Since I dont program any core is complex to me

dire tree
#

I am impressed by the core

amber lichen
#

I'm impressed with the saturn core, I'm surprised to see where its at today

#

I'm impressed that you're impressed

#

I have yet to try the n64 core. I guess I'm going to have to try it soon

#

too lazy to pull out my z64

#

and a bunch of zip disks

dire tree
#

lol ... damn you have one of those old things

#

is that worth money now?

#

id sell it

amber lichen
#

yeah I rember having to beg from firneds sister to get me a multigame hunter and stuff from HK those days

dire tree
#

if its worth a lot of money id sell it before the core is done

amber lichen
#

Keeping my z64 I had a hell of a time getting one of those

dire tree
#

seems like it would be a nostalgic collector item

amber lichen
#

lol yeah I collect more than I play really

dire tree
#

is that the same as Doctor 64

#

I remember I wanted one that took zip disks I think

amber lichen
#

Yeha I never got a dr64 sinxce I have a z64 but I also have a Krikkz n64 cart too

dire tree
#

long time ago

#

oh Dr64 took CDs right

amber lichen
#

so thats why I'm not in a rush to try out n64 core since its in very ealy stages

#

yeah used cds

#

back then cds were expensive as heck

dire tree
#

I would say N64 is further along than Saturn now but maybe its similar

amber lichen
#

and write speed sux, but if you had pioneer drives you can hack the fw to write faster speed

#

oh damn really? I thought it was way behind saturn since it just started

dire tree
#

no, Robert is super fast at developing

#

the core will probably seem perfect within a month or two

amber lichen
#

yeah his psx core is awesome

#

welp going to grab the n64 later and give it a whirl

dire tree
#

some games are squished on my CRT screen though, but that will be fixed

#

some look fine, like mario kart

#

the THQ wrestling games were all squished with black bars on the sides

amber lichen
#

I run hdmi on mine, mine screen does have component as well but my regular crt doesnt have vga

#

I still hook up all my old consoles to my crt though and have to use pal to ntsc patches

jagged quartz
#

@dire tree Maybe my sins have been cleansed?

dire tree
#

you will now go to heaven instead of hell

jagged quartz
#

It just blows my mind... I was so frustrated with the videos saying how great the core was, only for me to test it and have NOTHING but trouble. Dang Antonio Villena ram...

high bramble
#

Pixels too chunky... 😏

#

(had to complain about something) 😉

jagged quartz
#

I know the core is very early, and the Saturn is an SOB, but this new reliability is how it should have been all along.

#

@high bramble Surprised you didn't point out how it's washed out. For some reason when I convert and export it's like that... but I digress

high bramble
#

I'm in my 50s. Everything is washed out by now. 🤣

jagged quartz
#

So... anyone in need of some ram?

earnest ginkgo
#

Question (again), I'm following @tough star's instructions about for clearing the memory of the Saturn core from within the bios. All goes well, but it seems then on the core options screen the autosave, load backup ram, and save backup ram options are all greyed out. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

#

Nevermind, need a game running first for it to open up the setting. Derp!

amber lichen
#

@jagged quartz are you going to pay me to take those ram off your hands?

jagged quartz
#

I'll just GIVE it to you. Might make for good target practice...

polar geode
#

Sexy Parodius seems to be freezing on the character select screen after picking a character. I think this is on PSX as well though

topaz cairn
#

Are the ROM carts for KOF95 and Ultraman dumped and if so do they work on the core? Or what about the cart to backup saves?

polar geode
#

Try using the DRAM 1M setting for cartridge in the core, see if they work

topaz cairn
#

no that doesnt work. I yhink that and the 4M are the RAM expansion carts. I believe the ones for those 2 games contain actual game data

trim nimbus
#

Yeah, some of those carts had actual game data on them.

tall radish

Does anybody else get the "drive door open" thing?

The [h] part designates that it's "hacked" (presumably in this case, to be region-free). There are cheat sheets online that explain what all those bizarre file naming codes mean.

topaz cairn
#

Yeah I know about those 2 RAM carts, those work fine. I'm talking about the carts specifically for KoF95 and Ultraman. They contain game data and won't play without them.

trim nimbus
#

Right. Not sure on either count…I would assume someone dumped them, but I don’t think the core yet supports it.

topaz cairn
#

oh ok

trim nimbus
#

There is a 4mb hack for kof95

#

Looks like the same guy did an ultraman hack as well.

topaz cairn
#

cool, ill take a look

lucid needle
#

Does anyone know how to save in Guardian Heroes?

dusk orchid
#

Wow, didn't realize this had an update! Has saving been working?

mortal mist
#

yes, save works

dusk orchid
#

Man oh man!

lucid needle
#

But how? 😅

pearl harbor
#

It was so hype when saving was added. It opened up the core so much.

burnt matrix
polar geode
high bramble
#

Yes, that is TOSEC's naming convention. The [h] does indeed mean hacked, and in this case region-free.

pearl harbor
#

Robby just chooses to not replace the dead battery in his actual Saturn console to bring the old MiSTer experience into the past.

mortal mist
# lucid needle But how? 😅

Memory Cards - Backup RAM
Since 2023-08-09 the Saturn core has the capability to save your game progress. In order to use the memory card you must first initialize it. Some games need an initialized memory card to start.

Start the core and wait for the load screen to come up
On this screen select 'Manage Memory'
Select 'Clear'
On the 'Okay to Clear' confirmation select 'Yes'
Go back to the main menu and you should be good to go - don't forget to set autosave to on on the MiSTer menu screen
#

and don't forget to open the OSD before turning off the MiSTer

trim nimbus
#

@topaz cairn I might have misled you…opening up the core again, you can specify your own rom cartridge and set rom type to rom 2M, so maybe they will work

#

although my twice-dumped kof95 does not have a cartridge file with it to test

tawny forge

I have a friend losing audio in attracting mode for SFZ3. Single ram. Anyone knows what could it be?

yeah , alpha core 😛

tawny forge

It would be nice to have at least anyone else with the same issue 😄

Just played some of SOTN on saturn, worked great! Some slowdown in the dracula fight, but doesn't this version always have some?

drifting frigate
mortal mist

yes, there are slowdowns

To clarify "works perfectly" for ultraman doesn't mean "it's good" 🙂

And so is Sonic R.

Interesting.

It looks like I get an error on first boot. Kbd mode: Joystick 1

about to try steep slope today actually

Just for testing. I had some weird issues when I had both. Nothing like what you're seeing, though.

or SD Card and External Drive

seen nothing but issues people had

but havent tried myself

drifting frigate

Hopefully that's not it, but yeah... it gave me a lot of problems.

(And it was an accident. My image still had Saturn and the bios on it when I did a clean install and I totally forgot to remove it, like a cotton headed ninnymuggins.)

ripe dune
#

Ah well. I'll just unmount and use SD for now.

Thanks for the tip anyway!

drifting frigate

NP, hope you can get it figured out eventually (or that it's just the CD timings in the core and it gets worked out). CIFS is magical.

I should have done it way sooner, tbh. I've had an active Samba share on my home server for years.

So that doesnt help

pearl harbor
#

You should create a controller that is only analog sticks!

tiny flare
#

Give in and get a 3D pad

tiny flare
#

Although it only works completely correctly via SNAC right now, @drifting frigate has been poking around with what what needs to happen to get analog triggers working on MiSTer for USB controllers

#

Wasn’t really a thing needed by any cores until now I guess

drifting frigate
tiny flare
#

I appreciate you banging the drum on that all the same 😆

pearl harbor
#

Regarding Virtual On, is it possible that it could work with something like a Dual Shock 4's twin sticks?

drifting frigate
tiny flare
tiny flare
#

Although yeah I’ve only tried it on the core via SNAC so far

wise brook
dire tree
#

real twin sticks arent expensive i think its worth it if you like the game

tiny flare
#

Oh you mean like the ability to make those inputs to analog stick…yeah that’s not possible yet I don’t think

drifting frigate
#

I don't have one, but looking through SRG's hps2pad.sv some of the inputs are dummied out currently and it does show as a 6 axis analog device. But I haven't looked too deeply into it.

tiny flare
#

The twin stick itself is digital though

drifting frigate
#

So X1, Y1 (normally left stick), X2, Y2 (normally right stick) could be hooked up, but whatever analog it uses for Z1/Z2 is still waiting for those changes in main.

#

Maybe mission stick and twin stick are different?

#

Again, I have no sticks. I'm stickless. Sans stick.

tiny flare
#

Ah yep, twin stick is just two arcade levers, so yeah totally different to the flight stick

#

Well two arcade levers with buttons on them 😄

drifting frigate
#

OK, then yeah, that should be mappable. But there's currently no emulator for it in the pad translation.

#

I'll poke around with it.

#

If i can find out what the stick outputs it might be as simple as just mapping in MiSTer.

tiny flare
#

I can’t remember offhand but yeah it just remaps the regular digital face and shoulder buttons for the right stick, so yeah it would probably just be a matter of some helpful strings in the OSD so people know what to map

drifting frigate
#

@tiny flare Do you know what U/D/L/R map to on the rightr stic. Ah...ok

#

Lemme play with it. I bet it's as simple as a controller remap in OSD.

umbral radish
tawny forge
dire tree
#

how do i post a list where you gotta click to expand it

drifting frigate
tiny flare
pearl harbor
#

Nice, what makes that a great workaround is that you can just save that setup to a DS4 controller since it's probably the only game you'd use a DS4 for on the core.

drifting frigate
#

Sorry about the dual mission stick confusion. But yeah, this sould absolutely work. I'm remapping right now.

dire tree
#

wouldnt it be cool to have seganet support

tiny flare
#

But you totally can right?

umbral radish
#

@tawny forge The one that rings bells with me is one the Capcom games .... that Saturday Night Wrestling game (I've forgotten the name and I'm not near the MiSTer at the moment) .... a couple of the CPS2 gave me issues at the time, never really gone to check them as they're games I was never that interested in.

drifting frigate
tawny forge
drifting frigate
#

So what I tried was:
Left stick mapped as D pad. Right stick Up = Y, Right = Z, Left = X, Down = B, then I did L trigger to L trigger, R trigger to X, A to right trigger, C to Y.
And it seemed to work just fine. You could probably use the thumb clicks as well for the the hat buttons, but I hate thumb clicks as they generally make me lose control while clicking because I've got rock eater hands.

Saturn isnt always superior for Arcade ports. Its resolution is lower, and sometimes things are just better on PSX, or at least equal.

The hard and fast "2D better on Saturn" rule doesnt always apply

Capcom Generations 1-5 for example, almost entirely better on PSX except for one game.

/v/'s Recommended Games

"It's how you play the game."
The Saturn was a mixed bag for Sega. It was actually their most successful console in Japan; not a monster hit like the PlayStation, but it beat the Nintendo 64 by a hair there. Consequently, it amassed a very respectable game library, full of unique, high-quality titles. On the other hand, it was a total commercial...

/v/'s Recommended Games

"You must play Sega Saturn!"[1]

thorny lion
#

Holy smokes, just updated my Mister and the single ram core after a week on vacation -- core runs so well! Played the intro to Burning Rangers and Saturn Bomberman without any issues and without having to manually load the BIOS anymore 👍

drifting frigate
#

Messing around with odd corners of the library is a blast.

#

I kinda wish Tully Bodine had gotten an upscaled (upcolor depthed, mostly) Saturn release because the fmv was well produced. For FMV. But Elon Musk went to PayPal. (not the reason, but it's still so odd that it was his first real gig...Sega CD)

#

The pc version is fine. But I always preferred that stuff on consoles.

trim nimbus
#

I feel one of the big downsides of getting into the Saturn on the mister is a lot of its standout titles are arcade ports that already have mister cores.

leaden dagger
#

Deep fear and the better version of baroque

#

Oh an burning rangers

trim nimbus
#

One of the upsides of getting into the Saturn on the mister is the surprising number of fan translations being released in the last 5 years.

polar geode
#

If you're willing to invest the time (maybe in chunks) there are videos on youtube that show 5-10 seconds of every game in a console's library

#

Good way to find things to look into more

kindred peak
#

And stuff like SF Zero 3 has content that goes WAY beyond what the CPS2 version has. Characters, game modes, more animation frames... even above the PSX.

There's a lot of treasure on Saturn.

drifting frigate
#

Silhouette Mirage/Guardian Heroes...there's alsoi Tresure on Saturn! <bung!>

trim nimbus

Haha, I was going there too

kindred peak
#

AND the uncensored FMVs in Off World Interceptor Extreme. Because those poor Sony kids couldn't handle the swears!

trim nimbus

I used my Saturn for pretty much capcom games exclusively, but now I am just trying to justify the sd space vs the originals. Sfz3 for sure because of reverse dramatic battle.

Did you ever get around to trying this? I am curious myself (and own two saturn multitaps).

acoustic sable
#

I do subscribe to the "throw out all football/football/baseball/wrestling games" (insert genres you will never play here, obviously), which in my case can often drop the disk space by half thanks to annual releases.

drifting frigate
#

My guess is 5 on SNAC multitap, 4 on Reflex multitap (just to keep stress off of the USB chain) might actually just work.

I don’t.

in the 90s Saturn was looked down upon

#

it didnt last long and most games never came to the U.S.

#

PSX destroyed it

#

its much more appreciated now

#

I wonder if there is a way to get NetLink and SegaNet support

#

peer 2 peer

pearl harbor
#

Though I admittedly was a fan of all the consoles.

dire tree
#

i got 3DO and my friend got Saturn

#

he got 32x and I got Sega CD

pearl harbor
dire tree
#

lol

#

yea we never played it really

#

he had 2 games

#

we didnt play much saturn either cause I only remember him having Panzer and Daytona

pearl harbor
#

For that generation, I had a 3DO first, then got an N64, then my PS1, and lastly my Saturn. I would have bought my Saturn sooner, but my friend got one on launch day, so I played it at his house a lot.

dire tree
#

i had like 20 games on 3DO

#

andn demo discs

#

I got 3DO, then PSX, then N64

fallow surge
#

I’ve never seen a Saturn irl

high bramble
#

I got the 3DO first (when it was first released 😦 ), but got a Saturn later (Model 2). Wasn't thrilled witht he release of the Saturn, so I held off.

pearl harbor
#

I stupidly sold my 3DO eventually for $500, but I wish I hadn't...

dire tree
#

why? thats a good price

fallow surge
#

My whole area was nintendo into PlayStation into n64

dire tree
#

I traded my 3DO with all the games for a computer... but the computer was worse than the one I already had so it was pointless

I think me and maybe like 4 other kids I knew had a genesis at one point

Couldn't help myself. Walked into Electronics Boutique, saw it, and "Oooo... what's that?"

dire tree

yea it was amazing when it came out

All we had was Crash'n Burn and the sampler CD!

high bramble

I had just joined the Air Force, had no other financial obligations. Why the hell not, eh? 😉

#

Crash'n Burn was actually fun.

it is the a beautiful console too, the original

Yeah, I always liked the way it looked.

I love the weird grey and indigo of the JP version

dire tree

I hope we get a 3DO core one day

pearl harbor

Loved watching that Mr. Freeze episode of Batman The Animated Series on it! And Two Stupid Dogs!

high bramble
#

I watched that so many times. 🤣

dire tree
#

what disc is that batman on?

pearl harbor
#

The Sampler CD

high bramble
#

The REAL Sampler CD

dire tree
#

oh

#

I think I had that

high bramble
#

Came with the Panasonic FZ-1, at least. Not sure about the FZ-10 or the Sanyo or Goldstar models.

dire tree
#

yea mine was fz-1 and came with a sampler

pearl harbor
#

I remember we also had a photo CD made with a bunch of our old photos on it, just to test it on the 3DO's photo CD capabilities.

dire tree
#

i guess I forgot it was on the disc or never watched it

pearl harbor
#

It was awesome back in the day to look at your photos on your TV!

dire tree
#

yea that was cool

high bramble
#

Seems really cheesy today, but back then, that was neat stuff.

pearl harbor
#

Poor @naive whale is missing out on all this 3DO talk!

dire tree

lol

#

I spent $70 for Way of the Warrior at Walmart

#

and you dont wanna know what I had to do for that 70 bucks

#

i had to sell my gameboy games... al ot of them

#

worst trade ever

pearl harbor
#

I played Way of the Warrior on a demo disc, so I avoided it!

dire tree
#

i liked the game at the time

#

it made me laugh

pearl harbor
#

Got me Super Turbo instead and bought the official Capcom 6 button controller for it.

dire tree
#

i had that capcom controller on 3do

#

i used it as my default

high bramble
#

Road Rash was by far my favorite game on the 3DO... but I had a lot of fun with Twisted with my brother and friends back then. Such a wacky game.

pearl harbor
#

I suppose we should probably take this into the 3DO thread at this point. 😅

high bramble
dire tree
#

is road rash really the best version on 3DO compare3d to Saturn and PSX? The performance is probably the worst on 3DO

#

if we had a core with turbo option that wouldnt matter though

polar geode
#

Best version is Win95 I believe

dire tree
#

ah true

#

probably doesnt run good enough on AO486

#

yea it needs pentium so wont be playable

high bramble
#

...and the very first Need for Speed (3DO kicked off the franchise). That was fun.

dire tree
#

yea I played the hell oiut of NFS and Road Rash

trim nimbus
#

Maybe off topic (hope not) but I played a nfs demo from some cover disc on pc many years ago where you race through a north east small town in fall (I remember a small covered wooden bridge, and lots of leaves falling). Is that version on the Saturn?

dire tree
#

hmm

#

not sure but id be curious to know

#

wait I dont see Need For Speed in my saturn collection

#

I thought there was at least one of them on Saturn

kindred peak
#

Sounds like Hot Pursuit, but yeah... only the first NFS game was on Saturn.

dire tree
#

oh... must have a different name

pearl harbor
dire tree
#

Road & Track Presents - The Need for Speed (USA)

#

yea just found it

#

adding it to the sd card now

dire tree
#

is it better on PSX?

pearl harbor
dire tree
#

probably better on ps1

trim nimbus
#

Hot pursuit is definitely too new, this would have been 94ish…hmm that would have to be the original then according to wiki

pearl harbor
#

If it was 94, then yeah it would have to be the original.

trim nimbus
#

My sense of time might be messed up though oh well, worst case is I have an excuse to boot up the Saturn version on the core

dire tree
#

lol

hard mountain
#

so how mature is the Saturn core now? I've been waiting to get into it, as I'm not that familiar with Saturn games (so I might not be able to tell if something is a core limitation)

#

is it like the N64 core, where many things work but it is far from done?

dire tree
#

pretty much

#

just has audio issues alot of times

#

or half the time

#

its worth getting into now

#

although no CHD support yet

#

so you dont wanna load up a full set

#

you wanna temporarily curate a list of games

Doesn't matter, I don't think they're goingo to work as you can't add system RAM on the ROM image, just the rom data from what I'm seeing.

#

It's intended for pulling data for the games that need it. Not sure how implementation will go with adding writeback to it.

#

But currently it does not seem to work.

#

Someone may know more than me (undoubtedly a lot of people in this thread do), though. But that's what I'm interpreting.

I've been out of the loop too long about the sega saturn dev and I am srg patreon....

But

Are we to a point where a decent chunk of games are able to be completed?

pearl harbor
#

Yeah, there are quite a few that are completeable.

#

Especially since save support was added. It opened up a lot of games.

hard mountain
#

Ive only ever played a handful of Sega titles like Daytona and VF on the Saturn
