Thanks for clarifying albconde!

naive whale

@sudden tusk why cant you be more like @vocal timber Hydlide frowns upon thee

Okay, let's try it like that.

vocal timber

sorry boot.rom not bios.rom

naive whale

Hydlide has chosen @vocal timber as today's hero of the realm

drifting frigate

Yep, working great for me with the 'delete boot.rom' step finally clarified.

naive whale

I will clarify that in a video...delete boot.com from Games\Saturn, load core, load BIOS from alt location that is NOT Games\Saturn

Can someone confirm that it autoboots fine with boot.bin?

#

Ah, I'll just try it.

sudden tusk

Hey at least I proved it works

drifting frigate
#

Yes. Renaming boot.rom to boot.bin DOES fix it.

sudden tusk
#

Hydlide hath showed me the way

drifting frigate

In the Saturn folder.

#

It's funny because the error message still pops up 'CD Bios not found' since boot.rom doesn't exist. So def. a typo.

#

It loads fine.

sudden tusk
#

And how come I didn’t have to rename anything ?

drifting frigate

But the error pops.

Magical Drop III has regressions with the sound.

earnest terrace
#

I guess I might as well ask this and finally try to get this figured out while there are a lot of eyeballs on the new build, but when grabbing any of the green games in the pinned google doc are most if not all of them expected to output some audio? I don't think I've ever gotten consistent audio (either BGM or SFX) with anything other than Parodius but even that's still spotty. This is with either the Hi-Saturn 1.01 BIOS or the JP 1.01 one listed in the doc.

thorn pagoda

ripe valley
# sharp dove Oh dang Might indeed wait on then on my end

For me, the core have really progressed - just two regressions with backgrounds on Sonic R and Nights, otherwise it improves quite a bit 3D games, sound is better with some games and speed seem better.
Minus, the differences beetween systems (SEGA Rally, Super Tempo at least) and the strange bug with the BIOS with this release today.

drifting frigate
slate karma
#

Hm, I recall Donpachi was quite slow with the old core but seems full speed now? Dodonpachi was super slow too and isn't full speed yet, but is WAY better than last time I tried.

noble ferry
slate karma

drifting frigate

can confirm the 7.2 core, uploaded this morning to #unstable-nightlies , does not work as expected. Both single and dual sdram boot to a black screen, cannot access the menu. i had the 5.10 and 6.8 versions prior, both worked fine. This is with the unstable main as well from yesterday, 7.1.

drifting frigate
#

If you scroll up you'll see a big discussion about this. Rename boot.rom to boot.bin and load after launching the core (Load Bios in OSD). boot.rom being in the root will cause it to crash entirely... alternatively you can delete boot.rom and load any *.bin bios file manually. I just renamed it boot.bin to keep it consistent and easy to swap back if/when it gets fixed.

▶ Play video
#

of course i'm talking over the vampire like a fool

#

but listen carefully. in the us version, on the saturn, he speaks what sounds like a nonsensical string. it's actually what you said, but backwards.

#

so the saturn core is doing something that isn't what a real saturn does what that sound byte. it's supposed to be playing it in reverse.

#

can confirm on my real saturn.

drifting frigate
#

Oh, I didn't get that far. Just the first vampire after the graveyard.

#

OK, I see, it plays backwards in the beginning as well.

#

Yeah, still not playing backwards.

subtle seal
#

correct, the saturn core on mister plays it forwards both times instead of the correct way on the saturn which is backwards.

drifting frigate
#

But it's the same clip.

subtle seal
#

same clip

drifting frigate
#

Just in reverse... weird.

subtle seal
#

yeah i think it was likely a T&E soft "joke"

#

or they ran out of money

#

so they gave the vampire a backwards japanese line to sound like a vampire language

drifting frigate
#

That explains why it would be in the JP version as well...if it's playing backwards. Forwards it makes no sense. Hehe.

#

I take it this also happens on an emulator because ProJared did a run and it played forward. I just found that while trying to find sources on the line.

#

So this is a good test for future updates.

#

Gonna guess there's a flag on 'play sound' that can be set that's not implemented yet.

slate karma

Sega Rally is down to the RAM speed, not the version. If you can get over 140MHz it seems to work, anything equal to or below doesn't. Regardless of version.

errant sand

slate karma
#

Don't base it on that though. For starters, there's no way of guaranteeing you'll get faster RAM unless it's been tested to perform better by the seller. And even they don't know before they test. And secondly, this is a beta and hardly optimised. If it worked on an older core with this SDRAM, it will work on future ones... eventually. Even if it worked perfectly, not being able to save is a killer on that one. 😦

Thanks to the Saturn core, you too can enjoy Virtual Hydlide

@burnt matrix - have you run across any good starting world codes by chance? I'm wondering if there are some that are better set up for first time players.

You can use FAIRYPLATE or ARMOUR or HYDLIDE to get good items up front.

Just chiming in to say I can't figure out how to not get the CD Bios not found error when loading games

#

I renamed the BIOs to boot.bin

#

using JP v1.01

mortal mist
#

you can't do anything about it, it's just a error, it doesn't matter

#

games work ok with this message

#

this will probably be corrected at some point

twilit forum
#

for some reason, the BIOs will load but the core will read the game as an audio disk

#

now

latest stable mister main ?

both launch as an audio disk

i've had that happen a few times (randomly?) try resetting the core after the image is mounted

twilit forum
#

ok ill give it a shot

#

wow it randomly works now

#

also theres still a small graphical glitch on the konami logo sequence for tokimeki

shadow merlin
#

That glitch used to be worse on previous versions of the core, so it's getting better. Sound is improved in that game now too

#

Stellar Assault works pretty well now

twilit forum
#

yeah i played a little bit of it. it works well but i still cant get policenauts to load

#

its a little too unstable to boot games for me to use but progress is being made for sure

i talked to him and he was not aware people are using this. he will release a snac version latter on.

burnt matrix

He did a great job! I ended up buying a fair few Saturn accessories because of that build hahahaha

inner token
#

I'll try to do another unoffical build sometime. there was a change that allowed usb controls to act as different saturn peripherals, then another change after that reworked that. I still need to work out the best way to incorporate the snac code into that, then have you guys test to check if I broke anything.

twilit forum
#

I got policenauts to load and it works great audio wise. just a couple graphical errors with the credit names in the OP and some lighting errors in the beginning

#

I didnt play too much of it because I'd have to get my HDMI monitor out to play it since my tv cant stretch the picture in rgb and I dont want to play games underscanned

I cant seem to get the newest unstable Saturn (single) to boot. Ive update_all.sh'ed, rebooted, and even downloaded the new core directly from Sergey's git. Im just getting a black screen and I cant even bring up the MiSTer menu. Requires a hard power cycle. Anyone else experiencing this?

vagrant cloud

Rename boot.rom to boot.bin

rare zephyr
#

I did, both in the BIOS folder as well as the Games folder :/

vagrant cloud

delete config and reboot

burnt matrix

There shouldn’t be a bios folder

burnt matrix
rare zephyr
# burnt matrix There shouldn’t be a bios folder

There's one in the root dir. @vagrant cloud that seems to have made a difference, but its acting kinda wonky. I can load the .bin as a 'game' and it will boot to the Saturn's main system menu, but it wouldn't load the game, even if I opened the menu and 'inserted' a disc. Trying to load a game specfically (In this case Pocket Fighter) gave me the no BIOS found error. It looks like thats common for now? Saw a couple comments about it here. But then I tried it a 3rd time and the game booted. Not sure what made it work that last time.

burnt matrix
#

Well that’s not related to your issue so it doesn’t matter. No cores use a bios folder so it’s superfluous but it doesn’t harm anything.

rare zephyr
#

Yeah, been there as long as I can remember:

burnt matrix
#

That’s not standard but it doesn’t do anything bad.

#

When you load the core have you tried manually loading the bios?

#

That’s what I need to do.

rare zephyr
#

Hm, I know I didnt add it myself, because there are subfolders in there for cores Ive never used like CoCo3, PC88, etc.

rare zephyr
burnt matrix
#

Is the core set on the right region for the game?

rare zephyr
#

Yeah, JP.

#

Otherwise it would just say disc is not suitable for this system.

#

it just doesnt act like a disc is inserted at all.

#

Honestly I dont know what made it work that last time lol. I have a seriously atrocious short term memory. I gotta bounce, wifey wants me to take her somewhere. I'll have to fiddle w it later on. Thanks for the assists.

I have been playing Sega Rally Championship on the newest release and loving it. I know almost nothing about the saturn so I'm trying what I could 😬

But there seems to be an issue with the X-axis when playing on a crt. The bios picture is more to the left of the screen with a black bar on the right. While in some games the picture is a tiny bit to the right of the screen
