#Sega Saturn
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
I don’t get Nights 😢
it's pilotwings with harliquin
its just not very good
I think it’s neat but I definitely wanted something else at the time, I played and had fun flying in circles but I was very much wanting something more traditional
I've been living a lie
There was an analog controller and I was forced to play Nights without it
did you even have a childhood
Yeah if it weren’t for the VFs and maybe Sega Rally I would have been pretty mad about the Saturn. But in the end it was a better system than WiiU for my usage just by virtue of the virtua
why is your comedic timing so perfect lmao
it's not me it's the strong zeroes
I can’t get strong zeroes in Texas even though we have a Mitsuwa (Japanese grocery store) 😭
Never tried it
blame weird US tax law. It's cost prohibitive to put a 9% liquor and soda mix into a can
where as in Japan it's the cheapest garbage you can get ahold of
it's like whiteclaw on steroids
The real tech is using strong zero as a mixer for vodka/rum drinks
Everywhere did. I have the US version for my Saturn.
Try Dead or Alive. Almost all of that is in English but it’s a Japanese exclusive
That’s pretty worrying about SRG. Maybe he just suspended his Patreon because he doesn’t have reliable enough electricity to work on the core right now? Who knows.
Is anyone able to contact him?
anyone having issues running doom on saturn core? Mine i stuck at teh green loading screen. I tried multiple versions of doom. I wonder if I have bad RAM?

No , it's just that it's core in pre-alpha version and many people get different results
Core works best with sdram version 2.9 , and doom works best with dual sdram
I see. I only have single RAM and my SDRAM is probably old since I bougth mister 1-2 years ago
So I wouldn't assume a faulty ram in the first place
I saw videos that doom was running and I couldn't get mine to run
Other cores working ok?
I only tried bug and doom and bug works
There is really nothing to worry about
ok ty, I was afraid I probably got one of the first gen sdram and it won't be compatible with saturn since doom wouldn't run
There is probably nothing to debate at the moment, it is worth waiting for the core to mature
yea, I will. Thanks
It may be that dual sdram will be required for the best compatibility, we don't know that
At the moment it is also recommended by the srg320
obligatory post that makes this channel pop up on my sidebar
Just right click on the channel name and click follow, then it will always be visible.
eh, potato puhtoto
Still debating the merits of vga output versus dual ram.
As an owner of dual ram I don’t really see the benefit other than some Saturn games work better and I’m able to use the janky Atari Jaguar core since that requires dual ram
But most importantly I’m able to lord my superiority over all you single ram plebeians
Lol
inb4 sir periwinkle snake of baskets says this is solved by getting an oled and throwing your crts in the pool
CRT stands for Can’t Resist Terribleness
cast off your retro shackles and join the OLED revolution brother!
Imagine all the possibilities you’ll unlock with Dual Ram! Maybe play Atari Karts on the Jaguar? I think Quake Saturn runs better? That’s kind of it,
I'm doing directivdeo to a 35" trinitron with s-video and getting ready to take out my analog IO board so that I can dual wield sdram.
Finally loading my Saturn ROMs onto my MiSTer HDD...
Using xcopy of all things due to being sick and tired of Windows explorer crashing.
I kinda like having both so I can drive my crt and split the hdmi off to a rotatable 17" lcd for tate purposes cos I'm not game to turn my CRT on its side so I can play DoDonPachi 🙂
That is an extremely valid reason and the main thing that has kept me back... But I've decided to sadly rely on my PC to emulate my TATE games.
My CRT has a nonremovable stand and weighs 298lbs so flipping it is out of the question.
I just tilt my head sideways
Mine is a 20" PVM which is about a third of that and I'm still not keen.
I tried playing DDP in Yoko mode with the controls rotated to match and my brain just can't cope
I've got a 24" monitor in permanent portrait mode on my computer for work, so that's where I do my DDP sessions.
My dream is to have a rotatable HDTV mount
I mean if your TV has a vesa mount, that's within the realm of possibility
They exist - just expensive for the better ones
PC monitors are good for this, they also often have VRR and happily accept whacky refresh rates, as a nice bonus
I have 3 CRTs in my setup, lol. Two VGA monitors (horizontal and vertical with a VGA matrix, so I can play tate games if need be), as well as a CRT TV, if I want to play lightgun games or whatnot.
So, maintaining analog-out from the MiSTer is pretty important for me. Dual-SDRAM is not something that would work for me 😅
Got lucky and found a cheap sega saturn to dc converter for like $7 (total control 3)
Sold for $120 at least on ebay
I feel like I recognize your pfp’s art style, X-pert
What do you plan to use it for?
Virtual on for dreamcast using my saturn twin sticks
Too cheap to buy the dc twin sticks
Lucky, I’ve wanted one of those for ages, the Dreamcast dpad is so garbage compared to saturn
I can understand the Saturn twin stick reason, but aren't there other routes if you just want to use something with a decent d-pad?
Yeah. Hated the dc controller for 2d fighters. Saturn feels so comfy
Saturn pads are really good though
There’s the ascii pad I guess, but that’s not quite as good as a real Saturn pad and also a little pricey for what it is
Yeah the retro bit dpad is not bad, I have the wired USB pad and it’s pretty close to the real deal, but the build quality of the rest of the pad is not great
The Ascii pad is ridiculously priced now. I was thinking why not use something with a Wingman SD?
Wingmans are only good for fighting games imo like 6 button fighting games since they use ps1 style settings.
Otherwise, you need to be able to remap for other games
I am considering blue retro since you can remap but its website ui is clunky
I'm trying to think of something that requires a lot of d-pad use aside from fighting games.
Are there any exclusive 2D platformers?
Bug but 2.5d
Plenty of shooters too
Astal but dont think it's very dpad sensitive
Although arent most shooters kind of better with sticks due to turbo?
Although i only have the virtua stick
I’m more of a pad player, but yeah a stick would work too
So how playable was Segata Sanshirou: Shinken Yuugi? and is it worth a try?
Anybody looking for a good tate consumer set .. I present to you the Toshiba AF series ! Perfectly shaped for tate !
Same here
It's from Rain, my favorite webcomic :3 It just concluded its story last year, in fact
i wish i had the room for something similar. i have a multi system and want to make use of the SCART output someday.
yo this looks so fun! nice
I picked up a Flo monitor arm off ebay, and it's awesome but they are a bit pricey.
The Flo monitor arm lets you put your screen exactly where you want it with a minimum of effort and a maximum of precision.
I've got the Pioneer elite set up for most tate usage.
Fwiw, MiSTer Addons is supposedly working on an analog board that allows 2 ram modules but it's not high on his list of priorities. Maybe one day!
Wingman SD lets you remap everything to everything else. I used it so that I was able to use my Thrustmaster wheel and pedals to play Daytona on the DC. Can also use my Mayflash F500 fightstick with it.
Can’t get Galactic Attack/Layer Section past a black screen. Will dual SDRAM fix that?
@quaint dove it might…Galactic Attack ran fine for me and i have dual ram…what version is your ram stick? I know I had issues with a couple of games that were resolved when I made sure my v2.9 was made the primary ram and I moved my 2.5 stick to secondary
that might be a 2.9 then but I can’t remember
Works OK for me here, analog output, single stick from misteraddons.
Using Japan 1.01 bios which might help?
Never played it before, pretty fun game actually.
Believe so. The recommended one from the FAQ. I’ll check my sdram version later.
Same setup for me and it runs great
yeah that bios is the recommended bios but I'm lazy and use the region free bios
hopefully we can use it like we use the region free Sega CD bios
Anyone had details on sgr situation? Since his patreon seems deactivated.
Paypal JUST went through for me! Held for 6 days, but it finally went.
Literally 1 minute ago
for SRG's Patreon?
Direct donation, I haven't had my patreon process this month yet.
And Patreon still shows Not a Number for payment. But at least paypal is processing again.
The media has become bored of the situation so need to go actively hunting for updates these days. 😦
I follow some Ukrainian media but it’s impossible to sort out what is true from propaganda
Sadly no way to directly reach him to see if he's ok, right?
Sent him a pm on Patreon... hopefully he replies.
alexey just talked with him a few days ago, he's fine
the patreon stuff seems like just patreon weirdness
he didn't close it or anything
probably patreon having to work around occupied warzone or something along those lines
Oh that's great news. Thanks Kitrinx
That's an awesome update, thank you so much for sharing it.
Great news, thank you.
good to hear
Thanks a lot for the update! 🥳
On the global settings / membership it still shows a $ value for SRG though
Maybe he could go bunk at Krikzz's place.
Maybe they'll make a cheaper fenrir alternative together
that uses the cartridge slot
And has the MPEG card integrated into it?
I mean it would beat satiator lol
How stable is the current build? All's I'm really interested in is Sega Rally.
game works ok, problem is with sound/music
Ah. Ok. I'll give it a pass for now. Cheers Kuba.
I've seen this too, for a few folks I support. I sent Patreon a message and they said it's a bug that doesn't mean your support isn't going through.
There is an early build that has music but no SFX/Voices. I can PM you later if you want.
Gameplay is fine, just the sound is missing.
I'm ok but thank you. Genuinely appreciate the offer. I'm waiting for a 'perfect' Saturn interpretation.
Got it! Sega Rally on the Saturn is my favorite rally game to this day. So many hours put into it.
One of my main reasons to turn on my saturn.
Honestly? I'm no fan of the Saturn barring a few curiosities in its library. Sega Rally definitely one of them.
Once the core is finish a lot of people will be surprised by what it has to offer. A lot of it is arcade related, but some great gems too.
Since I grew up with arcades in the 90's it's one of my favorite consoles.
That and Panzer.
I like you grew up with Arcades in the 90's but I never owned a Saturn. I had a friend who did and remember Sega Rally in particular very fondly. I'm more a PS2 and N64 fan, from that period.
Panzer Dragoon 1/2 and Azel are great.
Orta is also really good if you have the means to play it.
Some of the arcade ports are available on mister already, but not all of it and saturn was a 2d monster (weirdly enough a 2d console first, even though Sega in the arcades reigned in 3d).
Yeah. That's where we are spoiled to some extent with MiSTer. A lot of those great Arcade ports on Saturn are now playable literally Arcade perfect on MiSTer.
Yeah, there is still a lot of it... also saturn had it's arcade version (just like PSX) with some great games too. So there is still a considerate amount of games.
Too bad a lot of things didn't make it to the west. Saturn was huge in japan. Being a saturn owner back in the day in the west wasn't fun. LOL
Anyways... between this and CPS3 I think we'll see a lot fo progress in the core this year.
His membership tiers are also gone and I've not been charged for only that Patreon for two months. But good to know. Thanks for checking! I'm just stoked someone has heard from him.
258 releases in US and 1265 releases in JP
Such a staggering gulf between JPN and US exclusives
Makes sense given the staggering gulf in sales of the actual console itself
plus another 34 games that came out in Europe but not North America
Wow didn’t realize it was quite that big a difference
Are there any French language saturn exclusives worth playing? I've always wanted to play a non-english exclusive but don't know Japanese.
I guess that depends on what you consider "worth" playing. I honestly haven't checked out any of the European exclusives except for Wipeout 2097. I'm sorry I don't have a list of all of them right now but I'm planning on compiling one soon.
If I had to throw a few out there that are probably pretty good, I'd say Keio Flying Squadron 2, Parodius, Riven and the aforementioned Wipeout 2097. And maybe "Dragon Ball Z La Grande Legende Des Boules De Cristal" if you're a big DBZ fan...
Deep Fear, which was released in Europe, didn't come out in North America, either, although a North American beta is floating around the Internet (they apparently intended on releasing it here but decided not to)
To add onto @winter phoenix's list above, these three EU exclusives are worth checking out as well:
- Formula Karts - Special Edition
- Street Racer
- Z
@wooden dew this link may also help - https://segaretro.org/List_of_Saturn_games_in_France
Sweet, I'll check it out
from a quick Wikipedia scrape:
NA only: 16
PAL only: 11
JP only: 770
NA/PAL only: 39
NA/JP only: 22
PAL/JP only: 22
All regions: 166
Total: 1046
must learn all the languages to have the truest saturn gaming experience
I feel pretty safe in assuming that I won't be interested in anything that never came out on saturn in Japan
you're missing out on uhh, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3? Tempest 2000?
Duke Nukem 3D????
Wonder how many photo cds for Saturn were made. Wonder how well those VF2 photo CD singles were sold
The absolute disrespect for Formula Karts
I swear it’s a fun little game. It’s of course no Daytona or Sega Rally but the game looks and plays nice.
Like with Doom, I reckon it's just better to go the source port route.
so I was throwing shade on western games and PC ports and stuff like that above, but actually the Duke3D Saturn port is really cool, it was done using the same engine as PowerSlave, which is a really cool shooter that had some really nice features on saturn like real time coloured lighting
definitely one of those few ports that went above and beyond
they also did the Saturn port of Quake using the same engine, which is also really cool
probably still not the preferred way to play the game in 2023 in either case, but still worth going back and briefly checking out if you are into that sort of thing
Oh, yeah, I guess it could serve as a mild curiosity for those who have already played it on PC.
Yeah, PowerSlave is awesome. It has some Metroid style elements to it where you revisit areas as you obtain new abilities to access new areas and levels. It also did first person platform jumping better than most during that generation. Definitely ahead of its time. It kind of did the Metroid Prime thing before Metroid Prime.
It’s also pretty different on vinyl but equally as good
The new remaster of the game is very good. It's a combination of both the Saturn and PS1 versions.
I've finished the older PowerslaveEX port and I loved it. I don't know if there's any difference to the new, commercial version.
The Saturn/PS1 version of PowerSlave is vastly different to the PC version. The new PowerSlave: Exhumed remake uses the Saturn version as a base and adds the levels and enemies that were exclusive to the PS1 version.
it's so cool that finally came out, thought it was never gonna get a proper re-release
I really enjoyed the recent remake.
Remaster. Whatever it was.
Hello everyone
Im trying to install the Saturn core on my mister, however, Im new in this.. Do you know where I can find the instructions in order to install it?
https://github.com/srg320/Saturn_MiSTer I found this
You can find the compiled core in #unstable-nightlies here: #unstable-nightlies message
There is a Saturn Core faq which includes installation instructions here: #1046941029296779344 message
I lovvvve Powerslave but I hate that stupid first water level, I can’t beat it
and once I do like two attempts I’m burnt out and have to wait a while before I feel like trying again 😅
every time I see a link to the github I get real excited for a split second and then realize what the post is about lol
yeah, the only time I'll believe it's real is if the latest is far from the last chat I'v eread
OMG, my sega saturn with fenrir arrived. Still stuck at work but the website sent me a notification. Thought it would arrive with my mayflash converter that I overpaid for because I am dumb.
congrats!
thnaks, I'll post my haul at /r/segasaturn lol
Wish my victor card worked with fenrir for vcds
Is it possible to make castlevania english and use 4mb cart patch? Or is it one or the other?
never tried
tried the 4mb patch with phoebe. Very little difference back them. Was there any v2 of the patch?
There were updates iirc but it's mostly still japanese
Videos really show almost psx smooth
On emulators, last I checked.
On real hardware, it remains almost the same.
Ah that's disappointing
Oh well psp version it is then
Although probably should play bloodlines first
yup... on emulators it is really smooth. I may be wrong but I downloaded it as soon as word of it got out.
try for yourself, maybe things changed. Start with the original and compare.
@mortal mist are you team scart, svideo, component, composite?
Annoyingly, component cable i got was bad.
I remember KOF 95 got a patch too, but only for bootleg 4mb carts.
Probably will just skip to psp, since the english tramslation is slow on saturn. Lije laughably bad
scart 🙂
ossc?
Currently ossc + add on thingy but moving to r5x pro
r5x became too expensive for now to me, specially after mister.
Yeah like more than half the price and only 2 inputs
hard to justify the buy, if almost everything is already hooked up to OSSC via scart
Wish they didnt cheap out on the scart converter
- mister
Yeah mister + retro consoles that are too much fir mister = fun
@edgy hollow pick up anything else cool, my friend?
@burnt matrix Nothing new for saturn maybe a blueretro in the future
Here's what i have today, fenrir saturn arrived today (bought all starting last month)
Anyway gotta sleep
No mouse? SMH ||just kidding, that’s a ton of Saturn stuff!)||
I’m just installed a Fenrir duo last night, but haven’t had time to fire it up yet
My Saturn looks a little different
If all you care about is good games, you should find that a 128 gb sd card is plenty of space
Yeah, 128gb is enough for me
fullset is really big.
Indeed , but I like to have only my favourite games
I'm thinking of having a 512gb sd for mister
I didn't fully setup my saturn yet but it already have a lot of fun stuff with 128gb
I think fullset no double is like 800+
I manage just fine with only 64 GB. Can only play so many games at once.
Off the top of my head, I can think of two reasons for having a high capacity SD card:
- You are a travelling salesman
- You have a New 3DS
*glances at 400gig Switch and 512gig Dreamcast SDs” yep yep
You are leaving out 3. Being too lazy to actively manage games on a thing
why yes, I am a travelling salesman, now please design me an algorithm to travel to all the places I need to go exactly once, for an arbitrary set of places, that runs in polynomial time
I’m not sure I approve of polynomial time, it makes things happen too many at once.
Not saying I’m a fan of linear time either but it’s easier to organise a diary with.
I guess I didn't specify that I needed the shortest possible route, so I guess the algorithm just hands the list straight back to me
stunning, we've solved it in constant time
Now Big O, SHOWTIME!
Still need to watch that one...
I got a 512GB and fully curate my library and added way too many games, still have 180GB free
I think that means it is time to expand your horizons and check out the dating sim/visual novel genre, of which there are many for the Saturn it seems.
I know someone with 3 1TB cards on his switch
Also the virtua stick doesn't feel nice on games
Like tried out 2 shmups and i didn't like the feel of it even though it was responsive enough
@wraith echo are there many translated ones? Like I can only think of Sakura Taisen (sorta dating sim)
I think I'd fit inside a 512gig (my 400gig is full) but that's with actually legit bought games.
I mean 1TB can fill so many games
- switch has 32/64gb
Anyway, so have had my Saturn for 2 nights and I must say, I am enjoying itt more than my N64 that I've had for 6 months
and I actually played Mario 64 in UltraHLE when it came out
It looks translation efforts have been mainly going towards RPGs, judging by this list: https://www.reddit.com/r/SegaSaturn/comments/10i21uc/sega_saturn_fan_translation_projects/
Sorry to hear that Virtua stick isn't working out for you. Do you mainly use more traditional controllers?
Been alternating between normal and 3d pad on most games
Did enjoy ysing neogeo asp via brook wingman
Another one is organizing the collection. That's why some of us collect games and not just sell them as soon as we finish.
Out of the 25 translations on that list, only five of them are RPGs or strategy RPGs. I guess if you don't count Shininig Force III scenarios 1 through 3 and its premium disc as all one thing, it goes up to eight out of 28. There's honestly a good variety of genres represented on that list.
There are mostly RPGs on the "playable/ongoing" list, though.
What kills me is curation across systems, like MiSTer vs Switch vs EmuELEC, not to mention that ideal game format for each can differ…
And two modded Arcade1up cabs
@plush jetty living the dream! 🍻
Lol, now if only I had free time to play games…
Does the Saturn have a lot of visual novels? What’s the gameplay like, just pressing A to continue the story? Genuine questions.
Usually dating ones. So lots of dialogs and choices that branch
That determine if you end up with someone or not
Ohhhh ok, thanks for explaining
Yeah not much gameplay
Focus is character development and story
Usually either good story or some kind of dating sim.
These days, they shoehorn in some gameplay sometimes
there's a ton of VNs on PSX
did any ever get released in the US?
there's some translations of them
Vita has a lot
All the Top 50 Rating are based on VNDB Rankings.
I ask because in the translation list posted above one of the games was a visual novel so that got my curious. Thank you for the info. 🍻
Yes, that's what I was referring to earlier. I wonder what other non-RPG titles are worth translating.
Tryrush Deppy?
There are dozens upon dozens of them on Saturn
All I'm seeing are textless and voiceless cutscenes and Engrish congratulatory text for the endings. Interesting platformer though.
Oh oops bad example then, haha
Yes, it seems that person who was working on it fell off the face of the earth around 2019: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=23687.msg375153#msg375153
Langrisser III translation project - A New Hope? - Page 2
So much for new hope
has anyone heard from/seen srg320, coming up on two months since the last activity I see?
yeah, Sorg reached out to him and he's fine - #1046941029296779344 message
oh good
Good to know he’s alright
And hope that stays the case
We all know it’s secretly you. Do another Saturn video so a new core appears
the legend grows!
Thursday
in the future, yes
its getting decently far along a lot of games are very playable, but lots of audio issues and the like still
Not yet. You can't even keep saves and sounds kinda mostly not there
it will probably take more time for it to finish due to sorg's situation
also, my 2nd mission stick is on the way to me
and i bought that stupid virtua cop special pack just because I wanted a 2nd gun
You can do what kids did on the NES, just don’t turn it off until you beat it!
22
sorg ≠ srg
oh oops haha
turn on the update spotlight @burnt matrix as I am doing Saturn in 2 minutes

SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code...AGAIN...so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. Seriously...the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle!
Note: this from the last December code update. ...
Someone already disliked it... Probably lol
lol not yet
but someone will. They always do!
Missing manual of gun and vc2 but ordered vc2 separately. Not bad for total of $28, assuming vc2 gets sent
good deal for box alone
The trolls. They're everywhere!
lol if you like the comment best thing you can do is comment on the videos. YT loves that shit
I see that the question about the new core as always came up hahah.
reddit loves to downvote
when I am on I will go upvote and leave a comment
I know i always upvote and answer stuff there but secretly dislike your video
lol
Really? How...strange. You would think that anything which brings positive attention to the Saturn library would be a good thing.
🤷♂️ Reddit people
Reddit loves to hate things. They are the Uncle Ruckus of the internet
They self hate what they built a community to show off 😂
One time I released a bunch of 3DO prototypes that had never been released. Had like -14 on r/3DO
Nice 🤣
wait is there a new version?
No , it's december core
hope srg is ok
#1046941029296779344 message
Unfortunately, everything points to this
with the "proxy war" lasting this long... I'm afraid russians will press a button.
Heathens!
anus greats*
If only the rest of the world would stop acting so fucking timid and just give them all the shit they want. Russia has proven they are no superpower
Can’t Vlad just fall out a window already so Ukraine can go back to living a good life and be left alone
the guy keeps on begging at every country that is willing to listen all while his people die and he enriches himself
this is fruitless - the whole place has been destroyed
horrendous war crimes have been committed from both sides
but this is not the right place to go into depth on this crap
Very true
But Putin should still get taken care of by his own people permanently lol
@edgy hollow they finally showed up lol
My standard two downvotes
Soft emu bot 🤣
And we will continue to downvote you until you release the new core. Enough pretending to be an Ukrainian.

@burnt matrix im kidding too 🍻
Haha I know. You’re a hilarious dude, I appreciate you. 🍻
I know you couldn't do it 😋 , You love saturn, you love MiSTer and people 🙂
And you love Virtual Hydlide
lol one downvote was from someone mad about ads
like they don't realize even if I DIDNT run ads, YouTube will run them anyway and keep ALL the $$
I gave you some upvotes in r/segasaturn to nullify the -1 from that chap saying you can just do the same with real hardware. Some people are just too precious. Probably worried their mint condition degrading plastic discs are gonna lose value.
actually some people, like myself, pay youtube to specifically NOT show ads and when youtubers do it anyway it's fucking us over
how are you seeing ads if you pay for premium?
that's like the entire point of premium
I dont unless youtubers insert them as paid promotions
lol well don't look at me
I refuse them all...I dont want to talk about world of warships or some janky ass lord title in my videos
as though I were stupid enough to care about nordvpn
I block conventional ads and flick through sponsor promos
now if Miller High Life asks me to sell ad spots...you are gonna have to deal with it! 😆
the sponsor promo is a little bit more fun to me since the youtuber has to debase themselves specifically for that product
I use the addon that skips sponsor stuff but it doesnt always work
when im in a bad mood ill give a thumbs down when they have one
Todays video was brought to you by misteraddons, for all your mister add on needs…
Ive turned down a decent amount...mostly because I dont care about what they are talking about
Maybe do random mid video promotion of obscure British candies
if something made logical sense...like if an arcade hardware company wanted to buy one on an arcade video...maybe I'd entertain it
So you don't need to care about what they're talking about in order to allow it as a pre-roll ad, but you do need to do it in order to actually use your vocal cords specifically to say "this video was sponsored by skillshare"
...sorry that sounds more accusatory than I meant it to - I'm not a content creator and I'm curious about the thought process
“The soundtrack to this is killer so have a listen for 30 secs whilst I enjoy some Maynard wine gums, enjoy!”
lolol
yep pretty much
I do not care what the hell YT shows you ahead of / behind my video. I have no input on that
but if I was to include something IN MY VIDEO, I'd have to care about it / want to talk about it...which I never do
Ive turned down VPNs, MMORPGS, controller skin covers, some weird company that sells inches of land in Ireland or some shit so you can make yourself a lord, some star chart birthday nonsense, etc etc
That video description was perfect :D
I don't mind sponsored ads in Youtube videos. I just skip over them. They need to put food on the table too.
I make it game, can I hit the right arrow key the exact amount of times to skip the ad perfectly
And you get little blurbs of them talking about hello fresh in fits and starts which is hilarious
I mean there are only a few youtubers that can do mid video ads well
I watch Brutalmoose's Hello Fresh ads by choice every single time.
not at my expense they dont
youtube should have banned the practice immediately before it got hold
it devalues their own paid service
FreeTube is pretty good
does that cut nordvpn ads out everything magically?
Sponsorblock is an option for Freetube
Hard disagree. But I'll leave it at that, since I'm not one to argue on forums like this.
I use sponsorblock, it's better than nothing
Also you can just not watch people who do that 🙂
I mean if you think it's cool for people just grub for money in different ways that's cool. You just grin and bear it, ill downvote the behavior see as gross
Easy enough I'd say.
I would much rather just pay for high quality stuff than get free junk
besides, it's not like youtube isn't already paying them, and they could use the much less intrusive option of patreon to beg for money
Freetube is free tho
🤷♂️
I just downvote and tell it to stop recommending the channel..so it can still somehow show up later with another rec
Now there’s more crappy movies being recommended that I can’t stop it from recommending mixed in
I don't mind skipping a minute of the video. Takes me 10 seconds and they can make money and keep producing content I enjoy. To each their own.
So scud, gun or no gun? Gameplay seems much different
I've always heard gun
Literally bought a 2nd gun for it lol since it has dual wield
I use nord vpn on my MiSTer when I run update_all
Lol tell us how you really feel
youtube people are basically the same as SHOWTIME people on the subway
Should I put my hat on the ground and dance to see if I can score some nickels? Lolol
(I hope you just know I’m joking around)
This gif sponsored by NORDVPN
well not all of them
some really do try to share knowledge
teach things, explain things
google nyc subway showtime
nobody ever wants to pay the entertainers and the creators...don't you know we all pay ours bills in "experience'
I've had to fight for more $$ on commercials I've done for KFC and Ray Ban
I pay youtube, youtube pays you
tell that to all the free watchers who leave me comments telling me I am stealing because I run ads 😆
what the hell
I had one today
I dont think I should pay and have to see ads
im pretty firm on that
I pay youtube for entertainment
sure. But all the people who don't pay and yell at me for ads...those are my favorite
Can I just yell at you for no reason
well, they're naive
I on the other hand am not paying YouTube to pay you
lol this reminds me of art school and being the only person in the room saying "I don't care that its art. I want money. All of it" and people looking at me like I was crazy
haha I am going through my old work and remembering what I got paid for it
or how much I LOST on some of it
I dunno nobody ever pays me in this hobby
haha well YT is a money losing project no doubt about it
But most of y’all schemin 24/7
I mean my actual film work. I don't leave the house for under X dollars
but in my personal work I spend stupid amounts of money I will never get back
This is "Blade Runner Apartment Scene - Now with more LEGO" by Anthony Bacon on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.
there is a fun old one. Couple hundred in LEGO and an anamorphic adapter...because I was bored
Someone paid you to make that?
No I was bored and wanted to see if I could make something with LEGO
It's just another one of my ideas where I pipe a bunch of money into it that I will never get back. Like YouTube!
people pay me for one of three things; bring a boring project in under budget and ahead of schedule, to set up and streamline production processes or aerial cinematography
but those damn drones killed the aerial cinematography work
I've put around 110K into productions (not entirely, I own the gear, so it's not like it evaporated) and I have received one residual payment for 25 bucks and one for 12.
Well, that's not true. I got paid my day rates as well, but on the producing side.
most I spent budget wise was 1 million
on a production
I did get the schadenfreude of watching their 'channel' endeavor fail and shutter this week though.
I have written checks for totals in multi millions, but my out of pocket is around 110K on a handful of films.
My out of pocket on SAG is probably 30% of my total overall earnings from SAG. So I'll never seen benefits. But they keep charging!
I spent $500 on a PS5 once, beat that
So you're WAY ahead.
But the experiences have been great. And our money EP has spent.... I don't even want to think about it. The CEO just kept milking that poor guy.
You didn't happen to work on... shit. A scifi show out of Chi town. Web series, but it won a bunch of awards. I cannot remember the name of it. Something 5.
I did not
I rarely do narrative. Its commercial / corporate
They love blue flare.
Ah, coolio. Corporate is fun, but I even took a bath on that.
Which should NEVER happen.
my last gig was Director of Content for a company downdown. Job was easy but boring. Then the company laid off half the staff lol
My writer's girlfriend at the time worked for Big Fish Games. 60 spots. They paid us 5 grand.
Ouch
thats....not good lol
And I bought the pizza for production. Hehe. They were groups of 5-10 spots with basically the same setup, so it's not like it was 60 full on completely different pieces. We put all 5K on the screen and then some. But it was to get seen. Turns out, their media manager hated that we were hired and buried all of our videos. Intentionally would release our vids then IMMEDIATELY release a tip video on one of their hidden object games to push us off of latest. It was effed up. Got to use my MoVI though.
BTW, thanks for the video today. Those are two great games and I'd never even heard of them. Crows feels a bit heavy - like River City Ransom. Chibi characters with Final Fight tankiness. But it's beautiful and pretty damned enjoyable!
glad you enjoyed it
(This is hands down the best spot we did in terms of fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScGzN75NY8A - code blocked so as not to hyperlink)
I am just over here editing a trailer for a new retrospective and spending way too much time on something nobody will notice lol
I love that stuff.
watching now
this is probably my fav work even if its old @drifting frigate
Chapslee Palace, Shimla, Himalayas. The Maharaja of Kapurthala's private home, now a private hotel.
I am still waiting for the day 7 Winds is playable. But even the copyright screen is so pretty.
that link is what I WISH people would pay me to do
This is like if Lars von Trier had hope. But more complimentary than being compared to Lars von Trier sounds... I like this a lot.
haha thanks. Nobody ever hires me for creativity...just for technical shit
It helps to not make a living doing it so they can pay you table scraps and you can just go home and feel shame instead of being compensated. </crying>
I need to make something creative soon
I literally made this to avoid doing work at my day job. And it's one of the best things I've shot, in a weird way. https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/303114528
But if the day job is filming....
You can't do that.
I try to sneak creativity into YT where I can but people dont like it lol
People don't like anything. And then get mad when it's gone. It's an impossible chase but ... what else can you do?
this is my fav YT thing...people HATED it lol
ignore
Happy Halloween!
See you all soon for a date with Dracula!
ASK TONY DANZA lolol
Oh nice, this is where that came from in the Castlevania vids! People get so messed up with any iconography and the loudest people ... well you know. You deal with it daily.
haha nobody cared about the inverted cross. They just said it was "too long"
Vine wasn't wrong. They were just a couple years too early. 7 seconds might be too much these days. The fact that 2x is like a common viewing speed means I don't like using YT for narrative at all.
yeah that was like a 30 second intro each episode. I'd have made it longer had I thought I could get away with it
The Hammer 'long title' influence is part of the joy, too. It's so sad that people don't have time for references or any of the pacing nods.
They just want their references to be screamed at them from a speeding car on the way to their pre-chewed dialog. But I'm not bitter.
haha the reality is I don't much care if people don't like it. I am just here entertaining myself
That's the trick, cap.
Well my mission stick will arrive after 2 months
That's a while, but that's a cool get!
Yup, can't wait to dual stick it for that 1 game. Hope that it works with mayflash or raphnet's adapter
Cellular internet was blocked in Luhansk Oblast today
Hey! I was recently almost convinced to get NordVPN , but you seem to know these things. What VPN provider would you recommend?
Not nord. They got hacked and didnt disclose it right away on 2018. Like they announced it 1 month later
I really do hope this core gets gun support. Tried out vcop1 pc + wiimote and the latency was so bad
Was actually looking at a larger crt for the meantime
Get a Sinden
Hyper Neo Geo video today is beating stats for Saturn FPGA yesterday. That’s odd lol
Not sure if this is sincere or not but I have had good luck with OVPN but I don't remember why I chose it over everything else
Does elevator action returns work on the core?
Should work
It does! And it's running pretty darn good.
Nice
Bought a Saturn the other day, had fun with Burning Rangers and Radiant Silvergun so far
@fallow snow I really want to play Burning Rangers. Seems like a fun and unique game.
@burnt matrix it’s definitely unique, I went in blind so I didn’t know what it was about and only did part of the tutorial on Mister. After actually playing the game it was a cool concept. I can’t wait to play more during the weekend
Also Radiant Silvergun is amazing but everyone knows that lol.
Just surprised how little Burning Rangers is talked about.
I skipped Burning Rangers back in the day. Too much graphical problems. But it is a good game. Played it last year!
It can definitely look garbled at times
Doesn’t help that the lights go out in the game and have to look for switches too lol
3d in that era was ugly 😛
also abysmal framerate
And I had a PC with a 3dfx card. So no excuses to play those ugly games that moved like powerpoint
2d games on the other hand were amazing
Yeah it did, I wanna try out Astal when I’m done with work
I played Marvel Super Heroes too, not a good port. SF Alpha 3 was great
Just be wary of some very strange and loud sound effects, unless something has changed recently
its awesome
Nah building gun4ir. Have all parts but motivation
I’ve wanted to do that too but same as you. Where do I find the time
I’ve been fixing arcade boards all week
Another 3DO M2 repaired and ready for its new home and revived a Konami Viper for my personal collection
How many do you have?
@naive whale So something interesting happened ...I moved all of my games to cifs and suddenly 7 Winds started working. With sound and everything. So I'm wondering how many other non working games will actually work over the faster storage.
Try the versus games. They are nearly arcade perfect ports.
Space Harrier loads...no black screen anymore..but then things get bad. Real bad.
Like awesome bad?
Yes, but only from a trainwreck perspective. The background layers load, corrupt, start doing some very strange line scrolling. No sprites.
interesting, have you tested other games that freeze? Radiant Silvergun for example?
A few. 3x3 eyes loads now. I'll try RSG.
cool, will look into that too as soon as I finish moving. Thanks for reporting it.
the issue is right when the game starts
yup, thanks!
CIFS =/= SMB? Heard the term loosely over the years but only used SMB
Arcade mode works. I'm in game and getting my ass handed to me.
It's an SMB share, but the client side is cifs_mount
Wait RSG works now!?
that's awesome, thanks!
I wonder if it would help sokyuugurentai, I get freezing early in where some others have said they don’t
Lemme try it.
you just opened a pandora box @drifting frigate
Hm. I guess I don't have Sokyuugurentai.
Boo, oh well
Oh, I'm wrong. I split S because it's huge and forgot.
are you using this wired for the share?
Yes.
gotcha
Working great.
No sound and occasional pops or sputters of sound. And there's a pink screen immediately after you launch before you get control of the ship, but it's working great otherwise.
Oh sweet, that’s encouraging. Thanks for giving it a try
Yeah those other issues match what happens for me, only it hangs shortly after you get control for me
Yeah, I'm through a few waves. I'm terrible at Raizing games, but no other issues at all.
Snatcher is on the 'not working' list...anyone know where it fails? I'm in a new game and the lobby is working fine.
Voices work. Audio popping, but everything seems good.
@undone oyster - I'm sorry for this.
Hehe
Grandia is working but with corrupt graphics. Game graphics are fine, but portraits are sliced up. It's an english patch, so the patch may be bad. The spreadsheet doesn't say what the failure is, but I'm definitely past the title screen.
OK, so it's all 2D elements... smoke sprites are all sliced up as well.
Why would you want the play the inferior version of Grandia?
damnit you didn’t fall for the troll, I am getting too soft or you are too wise
Woah. Once you get control it's SUPER slow. So I'm guessing, with the line order issues, this one is hitting an issue with the parallelization.
Interesting. Test a few more and lmk what you find!
Thanks for pinging me
I guess this is just a symptom of the core's disk access timing still being early days? Presumably access from a CD rom is super slow on actual hardware too...
So far from the Not Working list: Snatcher, Grandia (but with corrupt 2D overlay elements), abd Nanatsu Kaze (7 Winds) all work. And games that personally always locked for me (RSG) are working much better for me.
Almost assuredly. This is only helping games that locked up, so I'm guessing it's cd related.
Gonna give them a shot, also thinking about getting an official arcade stick
Super Puzzle Fighter is loading for me now, too. I also wasn't able to load it before.
Very interesting
So what exactly are you doing?
I have a 5 disk Raid + stripe hard wired to the network and the MiSTer also hard wired. I have all of my disk games on there in subfolders. That's it. cfis_mount is set to automount and I made an ini file that I could share between my MiSTers. But the big thing, I think, is just getting over that 20mbps USB2.0 hurdle. I think it's allowing more leeway to the current implementation of the CD system on Saturn by being a touch more responsive than the other busses.
So I'm guessing it won't do much for wifi since they're on the USB....bus. (Redundant TLA acronyms...)
But wired, it's worlds better for me, reliability wise. PSX as well. Steel Harbinger locks for me unless I use a share.
If you have the means, even though we already have CPS2 on mister, it's nice to have arcade stick for the saturn games. A lot of great arcade ports in the system.
It was indeed a 2d monster.
I mean you need turbo for saturn shmups
Sucks that not all games support full button reassignment if you use saturn to x converters
At least the one i know is in mister
Here's an example of a game that doesn't work over SD and does over network (plus some no-talk gameplay at the end).
https://youtu.be/-3yWWuR8G-s
Testing the MiSTer FPGA core for Sega Saturn using CIFS shares versus local storage (SD/USB SSD).
Many games do not load on the Saturn core for a variety of reasons. However, some games which do not load due to CD ROM timing issues may work if using a CIFS mount on a network resource. The networking hardware has a much faster throughput than th...
And of course I typo'd cifs as cfis.
Any way you slice it, he's still meatloaf.
I was just shooting a controller / arcade stick video this week talking about it
Here's the list of what's working for me over the share from the non working column on the pinned list. @naive whale I don't know which of these are working because it's been a number of releases since they were tested and which are working as a result of the faster I/O, but this is the diff to the pinned list.
Zama Chouougi (Some sky textures missing in battles)
Tama loads, is VERY slow, has CD Read error for a movie file
Snatcher
Shining Force 3 Premium (occasionally get a disc dirty error, but it loads more often than it doesn't)
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari
Mahjong Ganryuujima
Grandia (corrupted 2d graphics, slow)
Devil Summoner
Darius II (JP) - same behavior as Darius Gaiden - music, no sound, some corrupted transitions.
Cyberbots (Sound cuts out)
Arcade Gears vol4 ImageFight works.
Aquazone - no issues, but I don't know how long the previous tester let it run.
Aqua-world Umi Monogatari
Another Memories - No crashes after 5 min, no load issues.
Angelique Special (don't wear headphones!)
Angel Paradise Vol 2 - no idea what I'm doing and it feels like I'm gonna be on a list. But no crash.
Angel Paradise Vol 1 - See above. No crashes.
AnEarth Fantasy Stories - The First Volume
All-Star Baseball '97 Featuring Frank Thomas (Still made by Acclaim, so 'working.' v. long load times)
Album Club (Mune Kyun) - St. Paulia Jogakuin - No freeze after talking to the principal
Airs Adventure (Ear destroyer)
Air Management loads but is missing the overlay cursor.
Actua Soccer - no music
3D Lemmings - loading bar doesn't show up, but game loads
3x3 Eyes (audio issues)
2Tax Gold
It's not much, but it's not nothing. I don't have JP discs for Darius II or Street Fighter Zero 2 (my brother is coming up and I may be able to have him bring his for SFZ2). The list isn't specific on the failures for a lot of things, and many are 1MB or higher ram cart requirements. So those are all out.
My bro came though and sent me his rips. Darius II works, music but no sfx. Street Fighter Zero 2 hangs after picking a mode, so still no go there.
any new updates for the saturn core?
Not since early December.
tried out a handful of games on my own, don't recall seeing these on the list aside from the last one:
-Sakura Taisen Teikokukagekidan Taiin Meibo - near-flawless playback; humming noise on main menu is somewhat distorted and at least one instance of dropped voiceover audio that didn't occur on repeat attempts
-Sakura Taisen 2 Tokubetsuban (Demo) - boots and functions, but with frequent audiovisual errors (no voiceover audio, severe audio errors during opening FMV, fading and reappearing backgrounds during scene transitions); English patched version refused to boot whatsoever
-Sakura Taisen 2 - boots and functions but with severe audio errors and frequent visual errors```
Just saw this. Awesome!
$25 score
Missing manuals included in the box. But games have manuals
Hotd is a timed demo
question: does the most current saturn core from 12/1 support snac? or is there a version of it that does? the latest core i can find supporting snac is the one misteraddons released on his twitter from 11/20
no support for snac
there's a build in here with snac isn't there?
i helped test it
doesn't work with lightguns
Don't know 🤷🏻♂️
#1046941029296779344 message
<#saturn-chat message>
Yeah i don't remember that, sorry
it was in the old thread, only difference between 12/1 and 11/20 is added virtual controls. and there hasn't been a saturn update since then.
Found a larger microSD card here at the house so I'm finally taking a look at the Saturn library. Any shmup recommendations?
Radiant Silvergun - JP
Time Bokan Series: Bokan to Ippatsu! Doronboo Kanpekiban. And it's working perfectly with no sound issues for me.
Battle Garegga, Cotton 2, Game Tengoku
What is a nice beginner shmup on saturn?
Probably the kind that you can use turbo with
No Mars Matrix like games please lol
Sonic Wings Special isn't too hard
I mean I still found it hard, but I'm rubbish at shooters
Sure I'll try that. Only modernish shmup I've played is mars matrix. At least DC version has a watch me beat the game mode.
Couldn't get into Mars matrix
I like giga wing better -- although can only play for so long without autofire
Thanks for the suggestions! I see gunbird and strikers 1945 1/2 as well
The three I named, actually. (I don’t like difficult games.)
more random game testing, none of these are on the sheet from what I saw
Dragon Master Silk - Warped 3D environments, softlocks after walking several steps into the main dungeon
Tokimeki Memorial - totally flawless
Tokimeki Memorial Taisen Puzzledama - totally flawless
Segata Sanshiro Shinken Yuugi - music gradually corrupts and eventually goes silent, but otherwise flawless
Shining Wisdom (JP) - map tiles get jumbled making navigation difficult, but otherwise playable```
also, on the spreadsheet, Street Fighter Zero 2 is currently listed under both the Working and Not Working columns, don't know if that's intentional or not
probably for someone this game works , for another person it does not
there have already been many such cases here and at this stage it is quite normal
sdram versions etc.
Looking at the results @drifting frigate was getting it can even vary by your choice of storage medium at this stage
Still very early days for timing in the core
I mean lots of different things can cause games to not work on the current build
specially given there are different ram configs, bios and 2 builds, even storage has an effect iirc
is that also why Powerslave and Space Invaders are both listed twice under 'working'?
Probably. Some games just work in specific configs
corrected , thanks
oh, lol
is a list simply for fun, mistakes happen, serious testing will still come 😉
still a handy resource!
yeah, indeed 🙂
hard to work when missiles are falling next door , and the enemy is knocking on your door
Ohhhh yeahh. I hope he is safe ❤️
has he liked any tweets or anything lately?
this may be the longest he's been out of touch so far
Kitrinx talked to him recently. It's either his conditions or that he's focusing on having something closer to a beta, or both.
He is the kind of dev who drops things, based on what I heard. Here is the patreon:
https://www.patreon.com/srg320/
that's cool, i hadn't heard kitrinx had talked to him
yeah i'm familiar with the legend, i was here for megacd and pce-cd 😄
frens, any chance i could locate the saturn core?
thanks guys! didnt expect such a quick response
Does anyone know why letter boxing happens unless I need the latest unstable for mister as well
It's normal , screen is shifted to the left
oh ok, I can't fix it yet then?
ah ok I got it
I wasn't sure if it was a bug or anything
or something was wrong with my setup
does your pvm not have centering/scaling adjustments?
most of mine have little knobs that you can adjust for each image
I have a PVM (Trinitron 14N2U) that has no horizontal centering option on it
You can move it in the service menu
oh wait apparently I have to take off the back of the monitor to get to the potentiometers to adjust the picture
but I really don't want to do that
nope you can’t with this set. Believe me, I’ve tried
there is a horizontal centering setting i n the service menu, but it only functions on the composite and s-video inputs. It doesn’t work for the RGB input.
Odd. Bummer
Yeah, it’s kinda lame…there are a couple tools like the HDFury3 and potentially this aliexpress picture adjuster box that might allow me to do it, though
Saturn core badly off center on my consumer tv as well. Trying to just ignore it but it cuts off bomb counts etc in some games
Still early days tho
how about direct video? still unaligned?
Me? I'm using direct video yep. Haven't tried any other method
It's not the end of the world. But a few of the shmups that can do tate mode have useful info cut off
S-video here via Y/C core
this is nothing unusual , it was the same in psx core in the initial phase,,, it will certainly be corrected in due time.
in general when it comes to games some will be centered, some will not
I mean it will be fixed later
Could someone please point me in the direction of the current compatibility list for the core?
for now you can say which games run , which do not.
Sheet1
Working Single and DualRAM,Not Working,IMPORTANT INFORMATION
2do Aru Koto wa Sando R,2Tax Gold ,SOME GAMES ARE COMPLETABLE ON LATEST CORE
3D Baseball,3D Lemmings,JP 1.01 BIOS RECOMMENDED - SHA1 DF94C5B4D47EB3CC404D88B33A8FDA237EAF4720
6 Inch My Darling,3D Mission Shooting - Finalist,SAVIN...
Thank you 😊
I kinda wanna get a rotating tv for tate
But it's like, i will use it to replace a full body mirror and attach a webcam lol wgen not in use.
But it's too far from the tv
Maybe i will just buy a perma vertical tv and make it a smart mirror... And tate lol
Also another dumb question, 2M for games means the 2M ram expansion right? Are these supported?
There's 1 and 4 though
No idea if those tags are accurate in some packs
Also, i remembered my cintiq, not pretty but it works... no sound though
6 votes and 4 comments so far on Reddit
is the name, not the requirements
here is the list with games 1/4mb : https://segaretro.org/Extended_RAM_Cartridge
This teeny-tiny article needs some work. You can help us by expanding it.
Extended RAM Cartridge (拡張ラムカートリッジ) is an accessory for the Sega Saturn. It should not be confused with the Saturn Backup Memory, sometimes called "Backup RAM Cartridge", which, though looks virtually the same, has a completely different function. It should also not be con...
and there is no support for ram expansion in the core yet
if it appears will definitely require dualsdram
Idk, I did the gravity field adjust in the hidden service menu...
Got jealous of tate mode
No sound though and had to use capture card- pc hdmi. Else pure hdmi is purplish
If it's not tate, I don't wanna play it. Unless it's Progear, Giga Wing, Strikers 1945 Plus, uhh...
Awful irl due to grainy cintiq screen protector
- 2 saturn extension cables
Switch is perfect for tate lol
If you 3d print
Too bad input lag there is high on zebra
lol, in all seriousness that’s awesome you can play shumps as the retro lord intended!
Any bigger and I'd be afraid to rotate it. 27", low hours
Used by me for a few years before I moved out, archived in the folks' basement ever since

changes dont trigger the auto build
Compiling it but no clue what was actually changed by the commit
Single Ram
@stiff patrol I hate to bug ya but could you do a dual ram build as well? Thanks in advance!
Thank you very much!
No idea what the changes do if anything
His commit says "Update cdb", couldn't really figure out the changelist but maybe it's related to this - https://wiki.yabause.org/index.php5?title=CDBlock
This change is not on the core but on a different repo with HW documentations for Saturn.
I'm confused, this doesn't appear to be a dependency of the main Saturn build, unless I'm missing something obvious
the build checks our srg320/saturn, not srg320/saturn_hw
so the above build should be totally identical to the last one right?
yes, no change
it's really cool that you guys are super enthusiastic I guess though lol
I'm just happy , that it gives a sign of life 🙂
It's fine that it's not a change to the Saturn core. I'm just glad he's still plugging away at it.
For sure, I was just really confused when someone started sharing a build lol
Always good to hear he’s still plugging along
don't forget to switch the description text around again
nice 😍 thanks for the info 🙂
Good to know he is doing alright 🙂
Just say that in my inbox
Don't encourage people
Has the latest core been compiled ?
there is no new core
Oh … ok .. wth is Lu taking about ?

MiSTer Guid...
don't know
the latest is from December
only the documentation has been updated
not core
github don't lie 🙂
Yeah I wonder if Lu is confused …
srg320 released a patreon update talking about the part Lu is talking about, im sure Lu forgot to mention it as a Patreon Update about the core
but lets hope in the next 2 Weeks we get an update
Nice to see a progress update from him! ❤️
A big problem with the core right now is stuff not loading correctly or not loading at all so here's hoping this update comes with a significant compatibility upgrade.
The only reason you are seeing the core is due to the War. SRG normally just drops them when done
It's entirely possible that the core would be done by now if not for the war.
@burnt matrix doesn’t like anything. Real pessimist lol
But I bet he loves PC-FX. Who doesn’t!
(I like PC-FX so that’ll be fun to talk about in Feb news)
Maybe add a banner informing the state of a news "release, announce, etc .."
There’s always info on “can play now” or “in the future”
But I’ll show footage of games on X platform. So people know what it is. ESP for stuff like PC-FX
Would be fun on FPGA
I’m glad someone said something. I kind of forgot the 23rd is the last Thursday of the month. Feb always trips me up. Time to start compiling footage for news
quite possibly, but it’s also srg320’s most complex MiSTer core so far, so hard to say
Not surprising, given how nightmarish it was to develop games for the Saturn and how it’s still among the harder retro systems to emulate today
Sega: Putting Lipstick on a Pig Champions 1991 - 1998. "Our competition are..." "SHUT UP AND SLAP MORE HARDWARE ON IT!"
(I dearly love Sega, btw)
Model 2 was no pig!
it was definitely not a sustainable hardware design approach, versus competition that would fully reconcile a hardware design more thoroughly rather than “piling on” the layers
usually not a bad strategy, if you are maintaining software compatibility (hence keeping old layers and not merging/reconciling them with new layers), but if you also aren’t going for software compatibility ( then what you are ultimately producing is the politics of your org chart in silicon/board form
(Also as a huge fan of Sega, and what they did to push the medium)
Haha, huge fan, too. Here’s my Saturn 🙂
everyone posting all of their awesome Saturn setups both here and elsewhere are really making want to mod mine now, even though I said to myself that I wouldn't bother and would just patiently wait for the MiSTer core...although it's more of a pain when it's PAL, I'd probably be better off just importing a new one from Japan...
JP Saturns are definitely the cheapest option, but I’m not familiar with making it work for PAL. Fenrir plus region Switch?
looked into it quite a while ago, iirc you have to do an oscillator mod to get it to run at the right clock speed for NTSC
Just stick an rgb lead in it and stay @ 60hz
well PAL users also add a 50/60 switch, + VCD probably the best method to get 100% compatibility
since there are some PAL optimized games that don't work as well on 60hz
I have a small number of PAL games on mine, and assume they run slower? Fenrir automatically plays all regions. I’m on an NTSC CRT
some PAL games don't display right on NTSC
Randomised Gaming
Randomised Gaming presents a now complete list (first pass) of the 60Hz support for all PAL Sega Saturn games. We have begun a second test pass on all games and test results may change in the future. Until such time we are happy with all tests and have compared all games with an NTSC counterpart if available and on a NTSC Satur...
like:
3D Lemmings - Major PAL optimisation
Graphic corruption causes lines to appear, Overscan occurs bottom of screen disappears at 60Hz, game runs too fast. Note the Japanese release is a later code revision and includes Saturn Mouse support.
Not sure about the opposite case since I use Japanese
Ahhh, I only have PAL games that are exclusive, relative to US releases
yeah for me I have to use Japanese version of 3d lemmings
since no US version and PAL has issues
awful game though
Haha, I only put the good/decent games on my 128gb card
Can share a list later if y’all are interested
And I welcome advice on missing gems
Yeah 128 can fit all the good games. I went like 300 gb just to try stuff out
Yeah, I have about 10 gigs still free, and plenty of marginal games included
if Bubble Symphony isn't on there go add it! (grumpy face)
Makes me wonder if you placed like games available on MISTer like the fighting games
I know it’s on there, phew!
haha I tell everyone to play that game
how about that segata sanshiro something shingen
This process always opens me up to taking some torpedos, but I love trying to curate a great collection, and it’s only possible to do it right when you open it up to a larger community
Yeah, for some reason there is a vocal minority of people who absolutely hate Virtual Hydlide who would flip if you put it in a great game collection.
Lol, my list is more about avoiding crap and redundant games than every one being fantastic
Obviously its in its alpha state but do you think we are gonna need a dual sdram for complete compatibility once its goes release?
magic 8 ball says: future hazy
I think yes
4mb ram expansion for sure need it
my take is if you're not a CRT jockey / don't need dual video output and you have some cash burning a hole in your pocket, might as well go with digital i/o and 2nd sdram.
who knows what the future holds
CPS3 and other arcade boards might also benefit from dual sdram. Besides you can still use an hdmi converter, no loss there.
nobody really knows
it could turn out in a bunch of ways
like, maybe he'll work some science fiction and everything will miraculously make it with one ram stick
more likely some portion of games will work with one stick and the rest will need two
possibly it wont be stable at all without two
we just dont know
i mean digital can still use CRTs although you have to do it with some sacrifices
- Use direct video - sacrifices use for modern TVs
- Use good downscaler - adds a bit of latency but allows concurrent use of modern and CRTs TVs. Very flexible, allows all stuff to work on 480p/480i/240p
- Use cheap downscaler - you'd have to run stuff in 16:9 stretched to make it look correct in CRT. Can use concurrently with modern TV but you'd have to use 4:3 mode to make it look correct. There's also probably more latency. It's usually 480i only
I use #2 since I like ao486 stuff and it's 480p only and lets me use dual ram
I like how you use the term miraculously and science fiction. 🤣 I think there will be a breaking point where some cores will require dual for one thing or other. A lot of people have CRTs but also a lot don't. Hopefully there will be a new design that allows both and people can finally move on from the constrains that CRT is "imposing" on devs,
Probably not with MISTer maybe on MISTest
I do remember someone working on a dualsd+analogue.
like ram can only go so fast, there's practical limits
I know, I just thought it was funny. I was one of the "tinfoil hat people" who bought a digital IO board on early 2021.
Kinda wish you can put 2 de10s together as like a larger fpga
I decided not to go the CRT route a while ago and with the amazing job done on shadowmasks I'm not looking back.
People are eager for a bigger fpga, but prices will keep the de10 as the standard for a while and that's fine. A lot of cores (mostly arcade ones, I know) still to be developed. I'm quite happy with what we got already and in no rush to go into another new hardware for now.
Dual might be the little push we need on some stuff... who knows.
Yeah so far nothing out there really needs it but jaguar is said to need it for bandwidth
Although i really should mem test my dual setup
2.9 is the latest version of the sdram, right?
my 128mb is quite old, I'm assuming there are some gains in speed on it.
No - reliability and ease of production. If your RAM is working, you do NOT need to buy new. It's not an upgrade.
Awesome, thanks!
i mean core devs avoid the iffy frequencies nowadays
That was my thought. I bought a 32mb for the second slot and it reaches better frequencies.
The cores use the SDRAM at a speed they choose, to match what's useful for the core. They don't run it higher.
gotcha. I think it isn't worth the headache of going higher and have half the community reporting issues.
I just hope Jotego won't need those frequencies in the future
since he discovered the issue
Pfft. He's learned some lessons about RAM the last couple of years
Don't push it, basically
dualsdram is the future guys!! 🥳
now I just wanna see how dual 128mb ram would be fully used in this generation
Hopefully 🙂 Double the bandwidth, speeds no single stick could hope for
even though they all say 128 + 32 is more than enough
None of the consoles that'll fit in the DE10's speeds+capacity need more SDRAM than that, indeed.
Dual 128 is pointless, and I really don't see that changing.
Arcades maybe? But most of them are within the 128mb rom size range I think. Even STV stuff.
Machines with more are too fancy for the DE10, AFAIK
It's always a bit 😬 to see someone who wasted their money on a purposeless upgrade 👍
Good to head these things off early!
I agree, that's why I always ask about things prior to be sure. LOL
I live in Brazil and the currency rate isn't looking great on our end. We are headed to dark times around here sadly. But that's too off topic. LOL
Quick! Check my profile
So I'm kinda pushing my international purchases while I can.
Here's my current Saturn list. Caveats: It's NTSC-focused, it ignores light gun games, and it deliberately doesn't include Lunar, since Fenrir can't handle the disc swap. Hope it gives y'all some ideas on what to try, and I'm always open to suggestions on additions 🙂
Nice list! Fenrir doesn't do disc swap!?
That's odd. I have phoebe on my Saturn but it was a long and hard journey to actually get it.
Looks like it was worth it in the end, it was the only saturn ODE solution back then.
Sorry, missed the mark on it. Squid?
I'm the optimistic/glass half full kind of a guy. When I say "we are screwed" we are. 🤣
I should have been more clear. Fenrir is fine with disc swap if you save the game then load from the other disc, but there’s a small number of games where disc swap happens without the save first - those are not currently supported by Fenrir, but the only one that I care about in that small list is Lunar
just become one with the dread
Yup, same same.
So yeah, disc swap.
If you can't swap discs on the fly, no disc swap support.
There aren't any Saturn games that fail to save at the end of a disk, are there? It was a Sega requirement.
So no disk swap mechanic is actually needed. If you have one, cool, if not, reset and load the next disk and the save.
There are always some odd cases. MGS comes to mind... I think Policenauts does it too... I'm not so sure.
Hm. I'm not sure that list is accurate. Over in the Satiator discord a couple of guys played through several of those - they don't say they're saving but they do. I'd have to go dig on the github issues for details, and it's 3am so fuck it
Not that many... But lunar (at least the PSX version) is playable in all discs, the only thing that is disc dependent are the cutscenes I think.
Not sure, I wouldn’t dare play Lunar that far to find out!
Heh!
Lunar is listed as fenrir compatible with no notes on the disc swap problem
Grew up playing the Lunar games on Sega CD anyway, so that box is checked for me
Lunar 2 maybe has an issue tho
Just start playing the second disc. If it asks for the first during a cutscene you'll know for sure.
Wait. You never played the updated versions!?!?!?!/11/1/1/1/1/!?
Fenrir also supports screenshots, relatively new addition, which is nice
Lunar 2 and most of those others do save at disk end, according to a tester at https://github.com/satiator/compatibility/issues/12
cool, but I'm kinda on the "functional" vs pretty camp.
you can be functional and pretty
I hear you on that, and lining up the file names and images names is not fun, I did not overachieve
And please, if you never played the updated versions of Lunar, PLEASE just get the PSX versions then.
You are missing a lot by only playing the Sega CD versions.
One of my favorites jrpgs of all time.
Not all the time, sadly.
Bigger challenge for me, I’m at a no-RPG stage of my life, with three young kids
But but.. the games are short. It's not a 40hrs+ commitment.
One of these days! Thanks for the tip
