Try Dead or Alive. Almost all of that is in English but it’s a Japanese exclusive

That’s pretty worrying about SRG. Maybe he just suspended his Patreon because he doesn’t have reliable enough electricity to work on the core right now? Who knows.

Is anyone able to contact him?

#

anyone having issues running doom on saturn core? Mine i stuck at teh green loading screen. I tried multiple versions of doom. I wonder if I have bad RAM?

mortal mist
#

No , it's just that it's core in pre-alpha version and many people get different results

#

Core works best with sdram version 2.9 , and doom works best with dual sdram

amber lichen
#

I see. I only have single RAM and my SDRAM is probably old since I bougth mister 1-2 years ago

mortal mist

So I wouldn't assume a faulty ram in the first place

amber lichen

I only tried bug and doom and bug works

mortal mist

There is really nothing to worry about

amber lichen
#

ok ty, I was afraid I probably got one of the first gen sdram and it won't be compatible with saturn since doom wouldn't run

mortal mist
#

There is probably nothing to debate at the moment, it is worth waiting for the core to mature

amber lichen
#

yea, I will. Thanks

mortal mist

It may be that dual sdram will be required for the best compatibility, we don't know that

quaint dove

I'm doing directivdeo to a 35" trinitron with s-video and getting ready to take out my analog IO board so that I can dual wield sdram.

I kinda like having both so I can drive my crt and split the hdmi off to a rotatable 17" lcd for tate purposes cos I'm not game to turn my CRT on its side so I can play DoDonPachi 🙂

lusty rapids
quaint dove
#

That is an extremely valid reason and the main thing that has kept me back... But I've decided to sadly rely on my PC to emulate my TATE games.

#

My CRT has a nonremovable stand and weighs 298lbs so flipping it is out of the question.

burnt matrix
#

I just tilt my head sideways

fallen terrace
#

Mine is a 20" PVM which is about a third of that and I'm still not keen.

quaint dove
#

I tried playing DDP in Yoko mode with the controls rotated to match and my brain just can't cope

#

I've got a 24" monitor in permanent portrait mode on my computer for work, so that's where I do my DDP sessions.

burnt matrix
#

My dream is to have a rotatable HDTV mount

lusty rapids

I mean if your TV has a vesa mount, that's within the realm of possibility

sudden trench
tiny flare
#

PC monitors are good for this, they also often have VRR and happily accept whacky refresh rates, as a nice bonus

novel turret
#

I have 3 CRTs in my setup, lol. Two VGA monitors (horizontal and vertical with a VGA matrix, so I can play tate games if need be), as well as a CRT TV, if I want to play lightgun games or whatnot.

So, maintaining analog-out from the MiSTer is pretty important for me. Dual-SDRAM is not something that would work for me 😅

#

Saturn pads are really good though

tiny flare
edgy hollow
#

Although would you say retrobits are close?

#

Pc/saturn version

tiny flare
#

Yeah the retro bit dpad is not bad, I have the wired USB pad and it’s pretty close to the real deal, but the build quality of the rest of the pad is not great

wraith echo
#

The Ascii pad is ridiculously priced now. I was thinking why not use something with a Wingman SD?

edgy hollow
#

Wingmans are only good for fighting games imo like 6 button fighting games since they use ps1 style settings.

#

Otherwise, you need to be able to remap for other games

#

I am considering blue retro since you can remap but its website ui is clunky

wraith echo
#

I'm trying to think of something that requires a lot of d-pad use aside from fighting games.

Are there any exclusive 2D platformers?

winter phoenix
# wooden dew Are there any French language saturn exclusives worth playing? I've always wante...

I guess that depends on what you consider "worth" playing. I honestly haven't checked out any of the European exclusives except for Wipeout 2097. I'm sorry I don't have a list of all of them right now but I'm planning on compiling one soon.

If I had to throw a few out there that are probably pretty good, I'd say Keio Flying Squadron 2, Parodius, Riven and the aforementioned Wipeout 2097. And maybe "Dragon Ball Z La Grande Legende Des Boules De Cristal" if you're a big DBZ fan...

#

Deep Fear, which was released in Europe, didn't come out in North America, either, although a North American beta is floating around the Internet (they apparently intended on releasing it here but decided not to)

To add onto @winter phoenix's list above, these three EU exclusives are worth checking out as well:

wraith echo
tiny flare

so I was throwing shade on western games and PC ports and stuff like that above, but actually the Duke3D Saturn port is really cool, it was done using the same engine as PowerSlave, which is a really cool shooter that had some really nice features on saturn like real time coloured lighting

#

definitely one of those few ports that went above and beyond

#

they also did the Saturn port of Quake using the same engine, which is also really cool

#

probably still not the preferred way to play the game in 2023 in either case, but still worth going back and briefly checking out if you are into that sort of thing

wraith echo
#

Oh, yeah, I guess it could serve as a mild curiosity for those who have already played it on PC.

pearl harbor
#

Yeah, PowerSlave is awesome. It has some Metroid style elements to it where you revisit areas as you obtain new abilities to access new areas and levels. It also did first person platform jumping better than most during that generation. Definitely ahead of its time. It kind of did the Metroid Prime thing before Metroid Prime.

thorn pagoda

bear in mind powerslave is quite different on pc

not bad, but its less metroidy

I've finished the older PowerslaveEX port and I loved it. I don't know if there's any difference to the new, commercial version.

The Saturn/PS1 version of PowerSlave is vastly different to the PC version. The new PowerSlave: Exhumed remake uses the Saturn version as a base and adds the levels and enemies that were exclusive to the PS1 version.

And I bought the pizza for production. Hehe. They were groups of 5-10 spots with basically the same setup, so it's not like it was 60 full on completely different pieces. We put all 5K on the screen and then some. But it was to get seen. Turns out, their media manager hated that we were hired and buried all of our videos. Intentionally would release our vids then IMMEDIATELY release a tip video on one of their hidden object games to push us off of latest. It was effed up. Got to use my MoVI though.

#

Yeah those other issues match what happens for me, only it hangs shortly after you get control for me

drifting frigate
#

Yeah, I'm through a few waves. I'm terrible at Raizing games, but no other issues at all.

Snatcher is on the 'not working' list...anyone know where it fails? I'm in a new game and the lobby is working fine.

#

Voices work. Audio popping, but everything seems good.

#

@undone oyster - I'm sorry for this.

#

Hehe

#

Grandia is working but with corrupt graphics. Game graphics are fine, but portraits are sliced up. It's an english patch, so the patch may be bad. The spreadsheet doesn't say what the failure is, but I'm definitely past the title screen.

OK, so it's all 2D elements... smoke sprites are all sliced up as well.

Why would you want the play the inferior version of Grandia?

burnt matrix
#

damnit you didn’t fall for the troll, I am getting too soft or you are too wise

Woah. Once you get control it's SUPER slow. So I'm guessing, with the line order issues, this one is hitting an issue with the parallelization.

naive whale
#

Thanks for pinging me

tiny flare
#

I guess this is just a symptom of the core's disk access timing still being early days? Presumably access from a CD rom is super slow on actual hardware too...

drifting frigate
#

So far from the Not Working list: Snatcher, Grandia (but with corrupt 2D overlay elements), abd Nanatsu Kaze (7 Winds) all work. And games that personally always locked for me (RSG) are working much better for me.

drifting frigate
fallow snow
drifting frigate
naive whale
#

So what exactly are you doing?

drifting frigate
#

I have a 5 disk Raid + stripe hard wired to the network and the MiSTer also hard wired. I have all of my disk games on there in subfolders. That's it. cfis_mount is set to automount and I made an ini file that I could share between my MiSTers. But the big thing, I think, is just getting over that 20mbps USB2.0 hurdle. I think it's allowing more leeway to the current implementation of the CD system on Saturn by being a touch more responsive than the other busses.

#

So I'm guessing it won't do much for wifi since they're on the USB....bus. (Redundant TLA acronyms...)

#

But wired, it's worlds better for me, reliability wise. PSX as well. Steel Harbinger locks for me unless I use a share.

Zama Chouougi (Some sky textures missing in battles)
Tama loads, is VERY slow, has CD Read error for a movie file
Snatcher
Shining Force 3 Premium (occasionally get a disc dirty error, but it loads more often than it doesn't)
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari
Mahjong Ganryuujima
Grandia (corrupted 2d graphics, slow)
Devil Summoner
Darius II (JP) - same behavior as Darius Gaiden - music, no sound, some corrupted transitions.
Cyberbots (Sound cuts out)
Arcade Gears vol4 ImageFight works.
Aquazone - no issues, but I don't know how long the previous tester let it run.
Aqua-world Umi Monogatari
Another Memories - No crashes after 5 min, no load issues.
Angelique Special (don't wear headphones!)
Angel Paradise Vol 2 - no idea what I'm doing and it feels like I'm gonna be on a list. But no crash.
Angel Paradise Vol 1 - See above. No crashes.
AnEarth Fantasy Stories - The First Volume
All-Star Baseball '97 Featuring Frank Thomas (Still made by Acclaim, so 'working.' v. long load times)
Album Club (Mune Kyun) - St. Paulia Jogakuin - No freeze after talking to the principal
Airs Adventure (Ear destroyer)
Air Management loads but is missing the overlay cursor.
Actua Soccer - no music
3D Lemmings - loading bar doesn't show up, but game loads
3x3 Eyes (audio issues)
2Tax Gold
#

It's not much, but it's not nothing. I don't have JP discs for Darius II or Street Fighter Zero 2 (my brother is coming up and I may be able to have him bring his for SFZ2). The list isn't specific on the failures for a lot of things, and many are 1MB or higher ram cart requirements. So those are all out.

My bro came though and sent me his rips. Darius II works, music but no sfx. Street Fighter Zero 2 hangs after picking a mode, so still no go there.

This change is not on the core but on a different repo with HW documentations for Saturn.

I'm confused, this doesn't appear to be a dependency of the main Saturn build, unless I'm missing something obvious

the build checks our srg320/saturn, not srg320/saturn_hw

so the above build should be totally identical to the last one right?

yes, no change

A big problem with the core right now is stuff not loading correctly or not loading at all so here's hoping this update comes with a significant compatibility upgrade.

The only reason you are seeing the core is due to the War. SRG normally just drops them when done

Not surprising, given how nightmarish it was to develop games for the Saturn and how it’s still among the harder retro systems to emulate today

drifting frigate

Sega: Putting Lipstick on a Pig Champions 1991 - 1998. "Our competition are..." "SHUT UP AND SLAP MORE HARDWARE ON IT!"

#

(I dearly love Sega, btw)

inner kayak
#

it was definitely not a sustainable hardware design approach, versus competition that would fully reconcile a hardware design more thoroughly rather than “piling on” the layers

#

usually not a bad strategy, if you are maintaining software compatibility (hence keeping old layers and not merging/reconciling them with new layers), but if you also aren’t going for software compatibility ( then what you are ultimately producing is the politics of your org chart in silicon/board form

#

(Also as a huge fan of Sega, and what they did to push the medium)

plush jetty
#

Haha, huge fan, too. Here’s my Saturn 🙂

tiny flare
#

everyone posting all of their awesome Saturn setups both here and elsewhere are really making want to mod mine now, even though I said to myself that I wouldn't bother and would just patiently wait for the MiSTer core...although it's more of a pain when it's PAL, I'd probably be better off just importing a new one from Japan...

plush jetty
#

JP Saturns are definitely the cheapest option, but I’m not familiar with making it work for PAL. Fenrir plus region Switch?

tiny flare
#

looked into it quite a while ago, iirc you have to do an oscillator mod to get it to run at the right clock speed for NTSC

drifting crown
#

Just stick an rgb lead in it and stay @ 60hz

edgy hollow
#

since there are some PAL optimized games that don't work as well on 60hz

plush jetty
#

I have a small number of PAL games on mine, and assume they run slower? Fenrir automatically plays all regions. I’m on an NTSC CRT

edgy hollow
#

some PAL games don't display right on NTSC

#
#

like:
3D Lemmings - Major PAL optimisation
Graphic corruption causes lines to appear, Overscan occurs bottom of screen disappears at 60Hz, game runs too fast. Note the Japanese release is a later code revision and includes Saturn Mouse support.

#

Not sure about the opposite case since I use Japanese

plush jetty
#

Ahhh, I only have PAL games that are exclusive, relative to US releases

edgy hollow
#

yeah for me I have to use Japanese version of 3d lemmings

#

since no US version and PAL has issues

#

awful game though

plush jetty

Haha, I only put the good/decent games on my 128gb card

sweet nexus

Obviously its in its alpha state but do you think we are gonna need a dual sdram for complete compatibility once its goes release?

lusty rapids
#

magic 8 ball says: future hazy

mortal mist
#

4mb ram expansion for sure need it

lusty rapids
#

my take is if you're not a CRT jockey / don't need dual video output and you have some cash burning a hole in your pocket, might as well go with digital i/o and 2nd sdram.

#

who knows what the future holds

turbid crescent
#

CPS3 and other arcade boards might also benefit from dual sdram. Besides you can still use an hdmi converter, no loss there.

sharp comet
#

nobody really knows

#

it could turn out in a bunch of ways

#

like, maybe he'll work some science fiction and everything will miraculously make it with one ram stick

#

more likely some portion of games will work with one stick and the rest will need two

#

possibly it wont be stable at all without two

#

we just dont know

edgy hollow
#

i mean digital can still use CRTs although you have to do it with some sacrifices

#
  1. Use direct video - sacrifices use for modern TVs
  2. Use good downscaler - adds a bit of latency but allows concurrent use of modern and CRTs TVs. Very flexible, allows all stuff to work on 480p/480i/240p
  3. Use cheap downscaler - you'd have to run stuff in 16:9 stretched to make it look correct in CRT. Can use concurrently with modern TV but you'd have to use 4:3 mode to make it look correct. There's also probably more latency. It's usually 480i only

I use #2 since I like ao486 stuff and it's 480p only and lets me use dual ram

turbid crescent
edgy hollow
#

Probably not with MISTer maybe on MISTest

sharp comet
#

I'm not saying it to be spiteful or anything

#

sometimes it's just how it is

turbid crescent
#

I do remember someone working on a dualsd+analogue.

sharp comet
#

like ram can only go so fast, there's practical limits

turbid crescent
edgy hollow
#

Kinda wish you can put 2 de10s together as like a larger fpga

sharp comet
#

you probably wont regret having it

#

if you only use hdmi, why not

turbid crescent
turbid crescent
#

Dual might be the little push we need on some stuff... who knows.

edgy hollow
#

Yeah so far nothing out there really needs it but jaguar is said to need it for bandwidth

#

Although i really should mem test my dual setup

turbid crescent
#

2.9 is the latest version of the sdram, right?

#

my 128mb is quite old, I'm assuming there are some gains in speed on it.

acoustic sable
#

No - reliability and ease of production. If your RAM is working, you do NOT need to buy new. It's not an upgrade.

edgy hollow
#

i mean core devs avoid the iffy frequencies nowadays

turbid crescent
#

That was my thought. I bought a 32mb for the second slot and it reaches better frequencies.

acoustic sable
#

The cores use the SDRAM at a speed they choose, to match what's useful for the core. They don't run it higher.

turbid crescent
#

gotcha. I think it isn't worth the headache of going higher and have half the community reporting issues.

edgy hollow
#

I just hope Jotego won't need those frequencies in the future

#

since he discovered the issue

acoustic sable
#

Pfft. He's learned some lessons about RAM the last couple of years

#

Don't push it, basically

turbid crescent
#

dualsdram is the future guys!! 🥳

edgy hollow
#

now I just wanna see how dual 128mb ram would be fully used in this generation

acoustic sable
#

Hopefully 🙂 Double the bandwidth, speeds no single stick could hope for

edgy hollow
#

even though they all say 128 + 32 is more than enough

acoustic sable
#

None of the consoles that'll fit in the DE10's speeds+capacity need more SDRAM than that, indeed.

#

Dual 128 is pointless, and I really don't see that changing.

turbid crescent
#

Arcades maybe? But most of them are within the 128mb rom size range I think. Even STV stuff.

acoustic sable
#

Machines with more are too fancy for the DE10, AFAIK

turbid crescent
#

probably, yeah.

#

Thanks for the clarifications on it @acoustic sable

acoustic sable
#

It's always a bit 😬 to see someone who wasted their money on a purposeless upgrade 👍

#

Good to head these things off early!

turbid crescent

Here's my current Saturn list. Caveats: It's NTSC-focused, it ignores light gun games, and it deliberately doesn't include Lunar, since Fenrir can't handle the disc swap. Hope it gives y'all some ideas on what to try, and I'm always open to suggestions on additions 🙂

turbid crescent

If you can't swap discs on the fly, no disc swap support.

acoustic sable
#

There aren't any Saturn games that fail to save at the end of a disk, are there? It was a Sega requirement.

#

So no disk swap mechanic is actually needed. If you have one, cool, if not, reset and load the next disk and the save.

turbid crescent
acoustic sable
#

Hm. I'm not sure that list is accurate. Over in the Satiator discord a couple of guys played through several of those - they don't say they're saving but they do. I'd have to go dig on the github issues for details, and it's 3am so fuck it
