Polygon Man was Sony of Americas original mascot first shown at the first E3 in 1995 for the US console launch. Apparently when Ken Kutaragi, the founder of PS1, saw it he criticised it because of the lack of textures. So it was scrapped from all promotions

Just finished silent hill for the first time. What a great game. Got the ||bad|| ending and I can definitely see the replay value and how it spawned such a longstanding franchise.

#

Also, the graphics are ridiculously good and almost look like a modern recreation of psx style graphics imo.

now you've finished it 1x there's a new menu in the options where you can enable an ammo multiplier for your second playthrough

Hi, I have just played to Gran Turismo 1 for ~3 hours. I have found a weird behavior twice during that time.

#

I had no memory of this when I played that game on PS1 ~30 years ago.

#

It is not bothering at all, but I was wondering if there's something to improve and may impact some other games.

#

The problem appears when a race starts. Righ after the countdown finishes the game starts playing a music from the soundtrack. 95% of the time the music starts normally i.e. its beginning.

#

But rarely, the music starts at a random moment. It's pretty surprising when this happens.

#

I am using Taki's clone and the game is a PAL version of GT1 (Europe).

ivory verge
#

This has never happened to me

proper girder
#

I have recorded my gameplay. I'll try to post a video of it. But yeah, might come from the fact I'm using a clone. Still, I'm curious, this is just the game reading the track from the CD (microSD) during races.

ivory verge
#

We have done a lot of racing here in Gran Tursimo over the last two years. Nobody has reported this problem yet

#

Nor am I saying that the problem may not exist, but it is strange that no one has experienced it so far

proper girder
#

Or that track starts like that, I would have to check the soundtrack. But it doesn't sound like it's a way to start at track to me.

#

Anyway, it is not bothering. But I felt like I should report it, just in case 🙂

Hey all, I'm trying to use a guncon 1 to play elemental gearbolt through a snax 64. I have the core set to use Snac port 1, but it's not picking the guncon up. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I am playing on a CRT

I’ve been really having fun playing through the Japanese version of elemental gearbolt. What an incredible game.

The difficulty in the Japanese version is actually balanced. Working Designs really messed up the balance in the NA version to the point where it’s masochistic. Technically completable, but not fun in the slightest to me. You do miss out on the story in the jp version but it’s non consequential anyway lol.

The US version is much, much harder, to the extent that its lowest difficulty is probably harder than the Japanese version's highest one.

Think there's an 'Un-worked Designs' version of that one?

tulip moat
#

Rental market.

Publishers did not like the idea of their games being rented out instead of bought, so they would deliberately jack up the difficulty in order to prevent people from beating the game in a single afternoon.

This phenomenon was most prevalent in North America, which is why games developed in North America or were localized in North America often enforced really cheap difficulty in games, sometimes to game breaking levels.

Most of my retro consoles are currently in storage at the moment. I've only got so much space to spare for gaming hardware, so my DE-10 Nano has effectively taken the place of all my old retro consoles all the way up to the 5th gen of consoles and some later low-powered handhelds because of how small my particular MiSTer setup is. While the MiSTER does offer a pretty solid alternative to modded original hardware that I'm more than happy to use, I am the sort of person who'd still play on my original hardware just as long as I still had a reliable means to get some good video output from them that doesn't look like ass on my 4K TV.

@serene nebula I found the issue, it is a blown fuse on the ps1's multitap. Port's 1-3 work, but not 4. CTR started giving me issues aswell on PS2, all the controllers would drop their connection when a 4th controller was plugged in

serene nebula

#

that diagram exists somewhere if your ever interested i'm pretty sure

polar horizon
#

How do I mount virtual memory cards? Moreso, where do I get the file from

solid seal
#

When lanched and with auto save on in the OSD, Psx games in their respective folders will automatically generate a memory card just for the game in "Saves/PSX" directory on the SD card. You can duplicate one of the memory cards and name it something else, then manually mount it in the OSD, by navigating to the same "Saves/PSX"

polar horizon
somber steppe
#

You can but psx memory cards are limited to 15 blocks, so you'll run out of space extremely fast. The core creates memory cards based on folder. So if you put all your games just into the games/psx folder they'll all share the same memory card. If you put them all into their own folder they'll each create a memory card with the name of that folder. This is meant for multi disc games, so the save is shared between all discs of ff7 for example.

polar horizon
#

Was going to use real memory cards but my multitap died

I have a question concerning the video options of the PSX core. I play on a OLED screen with video mode 13, which is 4/3 aspect ratio. When I use fixed hblank and vblank without crop it seems to me that the image is squashed horizontally. What would be the best setting to help with screen shaking and still keep the 4/3 aspect ratio?

desert otter
# final salmon As a typical CRT user, please forgive some perhaps obvious HDMI questions. ~~Doe...

From my personal experience, if you want to get a slightly more wide screen view in your PSX games with the widescreen mode, use 3:2 mode.
When graphics are rendered on PS games, they are rendered only slightly out of view so that as you move a camera around in 3D, you don't see any pop in/loading of textures resulting in black/missing textures.
3:2 aspect ratio lets you see the extra bit off screen without the black textures. anything wider will start showing black textures usually.

#

this of course isn't necessary on a 4:3 display (like an SD CRT).

#

but it doesn't cause stretching or cropping if that's what you were ultimately asking.

#

(at least not as far as I'm aware)

final salmon
#

A little stretching though I think. You can check the video I linked from the help page. Watch the car stretch horizontally. Seems perhaps the same for all settings of extra screen, all changing aspect ratio far as I can tell

desert otter
#

tbh the only game I've bothered to mess around with in widescreen and actually play was TR

#

different games might respond differently then to the hack.
that one it seems ever so slightly stretches with every aspect ratio on the 3D real time rendered stuff, and the static 2D HUD stuff just gets stretched (which makes sense)

#

so there is ultimately "stretching" but only on HUD elements in games that use a very simplistic type of HUD setup where it's a static 4:3 image that gets updated with transparency applied to see through, and it's programmed to simply "fill" the viewport. so when the viewport changes from 4:3 to something wider, it's just "filling" the space which causes it to be stretched

#

other games that have a more dynamic HUD might work more correctly.
and games with a type of HUD that looks fine when stretched will also be less noticeable, like in TR for example, where typically the only static HUD element is the health and breath bar in the top left, and it being elongated doesn't feel off at all.

#

2D fighting games also look pretty ok too when stretched

final salmon
#

Interesting to see how quickly I forgot the flicker was there on CRT, but found it far more distracting over HDMI. +1 CRT's

desert otter
#

maybe on CRT it wasn't there back in the day because of overscan

#

and maybe the green values on your CRT were lesser coupled with low resolution and CRT mask and blending, it just literally wasn't as noticeable

bright girder

… with the 24 bit enabled I should clarify

desert otter
#

I don't think there's any game on the PS1 that will run like it's being put into hyper speed fast forward where the sound speeds up with it making it all high pitched in frequency.

You'll need an emulator to do that.

#

I would think a lot of 2D side scrollers where the game speed is tied to FPS and CPU clocks are going to be what gets the biggest "speed up" effect

bright girder
#

I have run into a few now that will run at almost double speed. Mega man battle and chase is so fast that you can barely drive lol

#

Luckily you can adjust the amount of turbo you want

silent bridge

somber steppe
#

So what's the downside on saturn then?

chilly kraken
# somber steppe So what's the downside on saturn then?

let me massacre the information from Zakk's comments on the topic:

Basically, CHD doesn't take anything on the cuesheet beyond index 01, so if a cd has tracks at index 02 and beyond, they won't be indexed in the CHD. This doesn't matter on the PSX core because it doesn't know anything about index 02 anyway - but the saturn core does. I believe it just means that music tracks won't work properly - but there may be other implications

here is the mame bug: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/issues/10308

GitHub

Example input cuesheet FILE "purikura.bin" BINARY TRACK 01 MODE1/2352 INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO INDEX 00 15:49:15 INDEX 01 15:51:15 TRACK 03 AUDIO INDEX 00 18:09:16 INDEX 01 18:11:...

somber steppe
#

Aight, so is there any way to fix this?

serene nebula
#

I saw Zakk mention the mame devs have no interest in fixing it

#

And he also proposed a solution

#

So yes there’s a way, would likely require forking the chdman code base to do it

manic citrus
#

it's also only a handful of games that are impacted

#

I could do it without forking chdman, but you'd have to convert the game to an uncompressed chd, run a utility that parsed the cue and added mister-specific index metadata to the chd, and then recompress it

#

scriptable, but annoying

serene nebula
manic citrus
#

I mean, probably. but only needs to be done for the games it is an issue for. no sense in recompressing your entire library for this

#

and I need to look at exactly how the indices get used, it may be that I can generate subchannel data and do it the way mame will do it "one day"

somber steppe
#

One day is good enough. Thanks zakk!

I don’t remember the precise details (I’d have to look it up), but I’m pretty sure that the “problem” with the single ram core is that occasionally some sound samples are delayed by like… nanoseconds.

I think people are well intentioned when they say “you’d have to be a machine to tell the difference”, but I think that almost encourages people to go for it because people tend to think that maybe they’ll be the one to feel the difference. By using the numbers it really puts into context how small a difference it is. It’s really not worth the loss of auto updating, the additional CPU cycles to build the core etc imo.

24bit mode in the core will store the additional bits generated by the GPU somewhere else in DDR3.

#

And yes, some games(e.g. FF8) show flickering in the usually "hidden" lower 3 color bits that can be distracting, but most should be fine

Did some more testing. Land of the Babes seems to run amazing with turbo on High.

Time to kill, also has no more slowdown, however the framerate isn't capped so it will go up to 40 in some areas hahaha.

Is there a compatibility list for this core? I don't see one in the pins (not referring to the GitHub issue list).

I ask because, this week, I've been playing the game Linda³ Again, and I'm at the end (of the first scenario).

# tropic stratus what is the advantage of the 2x cpu for FF8? I wasn't aware it has slowdown.

I think I've experienced some slow down in very few battles when lots of animation was going on. I think in some battles this was intended (some boss fights). Then I switched to the 2CPU core and haven't experienced it since. Two things, it might have been just my perception and perhaps it's identical to real hardware.
Only problems I had were save states that froze sometimes when reloaded. And an issue that was already issued here https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/issues/271. Squalls limit break in the ||final fight with Ultimecia|| is a little glitched. Haven't noticed that in other battles and I have used his limit break throughout the whole game a lot.

So, the Reunion and its Because translation focuses on the PC version of FFVII. Beacause and some bug fixes were already ported by GreenGoblin over to the PSX version, with the latest version being R06g. This is a beta release with lots of changes but still far from the major/stable release R07.
Reunions R07 is set to be released somewhere next year, first for PC. After its release the creator will help GreenGoblin port R07 to PSX.

That's what I do too, I will wait for R07. Really excited to play it but just have to be patient. It's mainly one person (atm) who works on it and it's a huge undertaking. I have a modded psx in case the r07 version still freezes in the core, to verify whether it's a core thing or psx thing.

Is there a way to force 240p in the PSX core? I've got that option on an emulator in my GameCube and really like it.

tulip moat
tulip moat
#

There is a hack that can convert 480i to 480p, though your mileage may vary since some games glitch out when forced into 480p.

tropic stratus
#

you can use deinterlace bob for 240p

#

but the image will flicker around as expected

desert otter
#

Yeah, an emulator can do it because it can just take the frame buffer and then generate out at 240p, but this core isn't a software emulator, it's a a recreation of real hardware inside programmable hardware so it functions as real hardware would albeit with a few additions such as texture filtering and 24 bit output.

A software emulator has the flexibility of doing whatever it wants willy nilly because it's not really that beholden to the constraints of the original physical hardware, whereas FPGA is pretty much just that.

mortal oracle
#

I assumed that the 480p hack did essentially the same thing (just dumped out the frame buffer)?

solid seal
#

I tried and the 480p hack with Bob still makes a vibrating picture. Weave is stable, but you can't use fake scanlines to simulate 240p with weave.

silent bridge
#

Same here, hdmi user.

solid seal
#

Maybe 'deinterlacing: off' option if forcing 480p in the future?

desert otter
#

nope

#

cuz if you did that it would mess with games that don't play nice with said option, and maybe would affect analog users

mortal oracle
#

Bob and weave are deinterlacing methods (bob “vibration” is normal) - if you’re using the 480p hack, then the output is progressive, therefore you shouldn’t need deinterlacing in that case (since there’s nothing to deinterlace…)

#

(I know nothing about video output though, so I could be wrong, but that was my understanding)

#

But if you’re not using the 480p hack, and the (original) output is 480i, then you absolutely want to use bob or weave 😄

desert otter
#

I interpreted the message as saying that the option for deinterlacing or not should just be tied to the 480p option exclusively

mortal oracle
#

Ah, my bad 😄

desert otter
#

but also not sure if deinterlacing is necessary if you're outputting to HDMI with scaling cuz I think it's just using the frame buffer and scaling at that point isn't it?

#

and then if you do choose to use deinterlacing over an analog output, I would only have to assume it's because you are connecting to some really old LCD that has terrible deinterlacing tech, or really bad latency from letting the display do it itself (like a TV) cuz modern displays have really good and fast deinterlacing, and any of the three modern options for a scaler are also really good and fast

Scanlines are really a property of 240p only

lusty coral
#

Tell you what though. Spyro Year of the Dragon is running like a dream. I just use that 2x core with a medium turbo.

desert otter
#

I think instead of scanlines you should look at just using a CRT mask filter only with PS1 @lusty coral

#

Cuz you only get noticeable scanlines IRL if the TV is like 32" or a high quality PVM.
Otherwise the lines are squished together enough on smaller cheaper consumer sets that you don't really see scanlines

lusty coral
desert otter
#

simpler pixel games like NES, SNES, Gameboy, etc. might look a bit better with scanlines, but 3D games like PS1 don't benefit much and it's the CRT mask that makes them look a little more "blended" together with the graphics.

according to the github they are now a part of the main mister repo so if you happened to do update_all and are running the latest updates they should actually be in your MiSTer options already

noble topaz

desert otter
#

Deleting the profile just means that the mister will make a brand new one with defaults

noble topaz
#

Aah i see 👍

solid seal
#

Yeah you'll just have to remap them from the main boot menu first (a general mapping for MiSTer itself)

#

Then do it again after the core is launched

noble topaz
#

So it's remapping the controller in the psx core and then remapp in the game?

#

And also remapp in the mister menu of course

So it's a total of three remaps needed if I understand it correctly

Having a stable frame rate is better since it just makes everything more consistent.

If you are playing a game and the performance is incredibly unstable, it can cause a slew of problems, ranging from dropped inputs to actually causing motion sickness.

That's why there are people that are particularly fussy about having a high smooth framerate in their games.
