TIL. Thank you 🙂
Nobody would want to rip off Knack...

Oh god...
When someone calls you a Knack just remember that there is a reason why it's called trash can and not trash can't.
thank you mark cerny for inventing eyebrows 🙇♂️
Are you a Gorillaz???
Yes
He ain’t happy, he’s feeling glad
Does he have sunshine in a bag?
No that’s on GameCube, this is PSX
Technically Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 is on both gamecube and psx
So... Through the application of transitive property...
Just finished silent hill for the first time. What a great game. Got the ||bad|| ending and I can definitely see the replay value and how it spawned such a longstanding franchise.
Also, the graphics are ridiculously good and almost look like a modern recreation of psx style graphics imo.
now you've finished it 1x there's a new menu in the options where you can enable an ammo multiplier for your second playthrough
you can also access the chainsaw/rockdrill now, so you can kind of race through it to see the other endings at this point
Sounds cool.
Launching Tales of Eternia (Destiny II) once more, after all these years.
I never finished a tales game but I bought at least 4 of them. So I still support the franchise.
Highly recommend Vesperia
Bought it. Played 1/3 of it. Somehow the tales games never keep me focused on them.
This was my first Tales game!
Hi, I have just played to Gran Turismo 1 for ~3 hours. I have found a weird behavior twice during that time.
I had no memory of this when I played that game on PS1 ~30 years ago.
It is not bothering at all, but I was wondering if there's something to improve and may impact some other games.
The problem appears when a race starts. Righ after the countdown finishes the game starts playing a music from the soundtrack. 95% of the time the music starts normally i.e. its beginning.
But rarely, the music starts at a random moment. It's pretty surprising when this happens.
I am using Taki's clone and the game is a PAL version of GT1 (Europe).
Taki's clone...😬
This has never happened to me
I have recorded my gameplay. I'll try to post a video of it. But yeah, might come from the fact I'm using a clone. Still, I'm curious, this is just the game reading the track from the CD (microSD) during races.
We have done a lot of racing here in Gran Tursimo over the last two years. Nobody has reported this problem yet
Nor am I saying that the problem may not exist, but it is strange that no one has experienced it so far
Or that track starts like that, I would have to check the soundtrack. But it doesn't sound like it's a way to start at track to me.
Anyway, it is not bothering. But I felt like I should report it, just in case 🙂
Found the track ( https://youtu.be/rQ8ug91-loQ ) and I am not crazy, this is not how it is supposed to begin.
Yep, I guess lots of people are using Taki's clone too.
could it be a bad bin/cue? specifically if the cue was wrong it could do that i think
I have found another time in my recording where this happens and... well it is the same track starting exactly at the same position. So yeah that could be a rom issue.
Let's say it is the rom. I'll come back if the problem happens again with another rom.
Yes it is.
Oh you mentioned that in your post I missed it
I think that’s how those tracks start
There is a music section of the options. It’s either “shade” or “tangerine” by “feeder” and both sound like they start there
That seems pretty normal to me, growing up with the PAL version
Has anyone encountered this issue with the PSX core? The video signal appears to freak out sometimes
Sometimes, the entire video signal looks like it'll start tearing itself apart
never 🙂
I've used my setup on multiple monitors and only getting it on my 1440p/240Hz OLED
Resolution change causing dropped signals.
Interesting, any way to mitigate this?
There is sync options in the ini file that gives you three different buffer options. This is useful if you are experiencing sync drops.
The PS1 core also has the option to insert a black frame to disguise the distortion caused by a sync drop.
This core is incredible. I managed to play some Ridge Racer 4 with the g29 wheel and it's just beautiful.
Still can't believe it exists
Wait your g29 works? Can I hook up my Fanatec setup 🤔
Dec 26, 2022 Update: A MiSTer core update just dropped which says it integrates the atrac17 patch into the main MiSTer core. This means you do not need to manually enable the patch as I describe below, it should already be enabled after an update_all. From what I can tell in the patch notes, the ... Read moreRacing Wheels on MiSTer FPGA – Setup ...
I do remember that there was a fanatic driver added at some point
This discussion also helped me get setup
Most importantly the bit about very quickly tapping the accelerator and brake during mapping solved a problem I had
Ahh doesn’t look like anything for a modern Fanatec direct drive setup :/
Is it just me or does dino crisis have like
litttle bits of the screen going black
seems a bit frequent
Might be resolution switching
yeah usually happens when I switch cores
but dino crisis in particular seems to have it like micro black screen alot
Psx games sometimes swap resolutions often. Load up symphony of the night and see if you see it there when swapping menus
Ah right
ill check back later on if not tomorrow
oh right isnt there
sync 480i to hdmi
yeah that seems to have solved it, forgot about that weird thing in particular
dino crisis is the best game to torture test resolution transitions in, it switches to 480i whenever you open the menu and you can open and close the menu basically as fast as you can mash the button
That's crazy and cool at the same time 😄
Should put the rt4k through it's paces at some point. I noticed in silent hill the transition taking longer than usual.
Hey all, I'm trying to use a guncon 1 to play elemental gearbolt through a snax 64. I have the core set to use Snac port 1, but it's not picking the guncon up. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I am playing on a CRT
need the jumper on io board set to io6 it you have say analog io 6.1. and you have to plug the yellow plug into snax or your video chain.
ah, it's probably the jumper cuz I've got everything else plugged in correctly
Is there a jumper diagram I can use?
I have the io analog pro
I believe the pro removed the jumper. it would have been near the user port
do regular ps1 controllers work for you? maybe you could try to plug the yellow plug in to the video chain instead of snax if possible. Do you know the guncon works?
Regular ps1 controllers work perfectly. Thats what is confusing me. I have it connected through component so I’m not sure I can do the video thing
The light gun might just be broken
It’s also weird cuz the buttons on the side aren’t working at all, which makes me think it might just be a dud
Can someone help me with a specific test just so I can rule out a problem with my SD card read speeds?
Galaxian 3 (E) - For some reason, intro movie is very jumpy and stuttery. While playing the game is repeatedly jumping forwards at regular intervals and I get CD Slow overlay popping up from time to time.
For some reason it's not so bad if I enable PAL 60Hz Hack but it still happens
What SD card are you using?
sandisk ultra 64gb sdxc a1 if that means anything
I tried the (J) iso and it's much smoother so it might just be a PAL FMV quirk with the psx core? I still get the odd moment where it 'jolts' forwards though and seems to lag then catch up on itself
you can always turn off pause on slow cd
just be aware that might cause it to outright crash instead
I’ve been really having fun playing through the Japanese version of elemental gearbolt. What an incredible game.
The difficulty in the Japanese version is actually balanced. Working Designs really messed up the balance in the NA version to the point where it’s masochistic. Technically completable, but not fun in the slightest to me. You do miss out on the story in the jp version but it’s non consequential anyway lol.
can you even navigate the menus. i not speak japonese.
The US version is much, much harder, to the extent that its lowest difficulty is probably harder than the Japanese version's highest one.
I wish I knew why Working Designs had such a bad habit of doing that.
Think there's an 'Un-worked Designs' version of that one?
Rental market.
Publishers did not like the idea of their games being rented out instead of bought, so they would deliberately jack up the difficulty in order to prevent people from beating the game in a single afternoon.
This phenomenon was most prevalent in North America, which is why games developed in North America or were localized in North America often enforced really cheap difficulty in games, sometimes to game breaking levels.
Unfortunately no unworked version that I’m aware of, and the menus are all very basic. It’s really import friendly.
If you could swap out the cutscenes on the disc for the na versions then it’d be close to perfect. The only text that’s in Japanese are the level names and some stuff on the level clear screen, but it’s all easy to understand.
Random question. I’m loading a bunch of GameShark discs trying to find a specific one I had that let you sift through the cutscene files on the discs, but I’m finding so far that like 6 different GameShark discs are loading but not showing any video…? Is this a known problem?
No reckoning here?
Nah, there isn’t close to 1000 people in here
Do not underestimate the power of N64
Is there anyone in here experienced with modifying or developing ps1 game files?
@manic citrus I tested the audio skipping in ff7 again and turns out it was the hdmi switch I used that made the audio pop. When connected directly it works fine. Sorry bout that.
It's fine with the normal main even. Couldn't reproduce it in like 5 minutes of opening and closing the menu in ff7 when connected directly but as soon as I put the switch inbetween it popped again. I'm on v240920
PSX core is best core
PS1 confirmed least popular console of the generation!

To a true mister disciple there is no psx, n64 or saturn. There aren't console wars. There isn't even a pc vs console debate.
There is only mister! ❤️
mister is all, mister is life
Our lord and savior. 🙏
praise be to the mister
#notacult
Or the library is good that people are playing games rather than discussing other things 😉
Cdi channel must be one hell of a party then
The MiSTer must flow.
All hail our golden named brethren!
Protect us from the orange ones!
Our MiSTer
Who art under the television
Hallowed be thy games
Long run thy update_all
I hope when I retire there will be a mister compound with believers I can join.
Brethren, we must update_all ourselves
Did I just join a cult?
No no no haha. Have some lemonade.
Flavour aide. Grape flavour.
If you're going to poison yourself at least have some self respect and make it classy
That's what they used.
In j-town.
No cool aide, just the cheap stuff. Look it up.
Forgive me MiSTer, for I have sinned. It's been like 3 months since my last update all.
There probably was someone who isn't on this discord and updated and found a psx and n64 core on his mister.
And did a double take with googly eyes and jaw drop etc
Drop your head in shame!
I just put together an "unworked" edition of Elemental Gearbolt if anyone is interested. I just took all the english fmvs and other assets i could insert into the jp iso of the game. It will have the english presentation but retain the original intended non working designs difficulty.
However I cant upload to archive as it seems broken atm, so if anyone is interested for a link to it just dm me.
Are the JP and US ones the same size?
Off hand I’m not 100 percent, but the way file swapping works in ps1 discs it should be the same file size
That would be perhaps one of the greatest moments of their life.
These kids all grown up
you think they still play Nintendo 64? or the MiSTer core?
Doesn’t everybody?
Can only speak for psx but I haven't touched my xstation modded, memcard pro equipped psx since I've got mister.
Most of my retro consoles are currently in storage at the moment. I've only got so much space to spare for gaming hardware, so my DE-10 Nano has effectively taken the place of all my old retro consoles all the way up to the 5th gen of consoles and some later low-powered handhelds because of how small my particular MiSTer setup is. While the MiSTER does offer a pretty solid alternative to modded original hardware that I'm more than happy to use, I am the sort of person who'd still play on my original hardware just as long as I still had a reliable means to get some good video output from them that doesn't look like ass on my 4K TV.
The ass part can be majorly improved by a 4k scaler
It cannot be done. You either play pretty pretty modern games or grill your retinas with an electron gun
One of the very few modern games that thoroughly and completely eclipsed my expectations is signalis. It's like sci fi silent hill.
Signalis is really cool
i found it kind of annoying until they patched it to give you more inventory spaces but then it was awesome
anyone who fell off it at launch should check it out again they've patched it a ton
I played with the revised inventory, the regular 6 spaces and flashlight and the eye not taking a space.
yeah that made a huge difference
i'm not really sure what they were thinking at launch, even OG resident evil wasn't so stingy with inventory space
I never even managed to get my Xstation installed before the core made it obsolete. It’s just in a box
My psio fell into disuse after they didn’t update it for 3 years, and then the core put nails into it’s coffin
I have it still unpacked, and with the PSX core it feels redundant indeed
The final straw for me with the psio was the memcard pro came out for ps1, I bought it right away anticipated it’d get supported. Xstation came out right around then and supported it from day one… to my knowledge psio STILL doesn’t?
That and the owner (Matt I think it was) was very hostile to criticism and anti consumer
Best thing about memcard pro is ||that I could easily convert my save games for mister||
I do really want that memcard for ps2 tho
Oh it's neat, works great with opl.
Memcard pro gc is also great.
I'll gift you mine when the ps2 and gc core is out.
psio does support gameid now but my psio is long gone
Well it’s coming on mars next quarter so I’ll hold you to that!
Also my super sega is going to play Dreamcast and all the sega arcade games
I threw 10 preorders down just so I wouldn’t miss my chance. On an unrelated note I sure hope my bank account is okay.
Are there even any good games on dc?
The Resident Evil titles, well the Japanese ones titled Biohazard are interesting. As they had demos for other Biohazard games.
For example, my copy of Biohazard 2 Value Plus has a demo/preview build of Biohazard Code Veronica.
Two: Shenmue and Shenmue 2
They've all been ported to better consoles and don't count
Can it be better, if it doesn't have a 70 man VMU countdown?
i recently got a dc again and a gdemu for it and i'm not sure either
Of games that remain locked on the Dreamcast… umm… crazy taxi 2? 😅
I think D2 is still exclusive. I’ve never played it, but that’s meant to be good, I think
cannon spike?
GC is a better DC than a DC. Change my mind.
there's no jet set radio on GC
GC lacks those two games
xbox is the superior dreamcast
Or JSR
This
i think it even has crazy taxi 2? unlockable in CT3
Childhood me bought an Xbox specifically because I saw it as the Dreamcast 2
And also because I blamed Sony for killing the DC. Console war loyalties clouding my vision 😂
Wii U is basically the 2010s version of the Dreamcast. Bunch of cool tech that was too early for it's time, lasted only a handful of years, and all the best games got ported to other systems.
Go Go Hypergrind? 😂
Dreamcast will never be dead so long as D2 and Illbleed remain unported
Brave words! I'm not sure I can name a single Wii U game offhand
Maybe some zelda
And for the DC on the other hand, there are many legendary games like sonic adventure... sonic adventure 2... Chu Chu rocket
And ikaruga
Star Fox Zero! I am aware of one other human (not counting Shigeru Miyamoto I guess) that really likes that game.
It would be nice if it had more of the PSX spirit in it, kinda does with some of the oddball games, but that library just isn't even a fraction big enough to compare. Some fun games though
nintendo hardware is never too early.
The hardware which should have been used is just not old enough to be within nintendos range of cheapness.
If we ever get a Yoshi's Wooly World port to Switch, I can finally unhook my Wii U! The 3DS version just isn't good enough! I need muh HD visuals.
I really hope we do. Yoshi needs more love
Devil's Third switch port wen
TP n WW say hi.
lol I bought that game, the intro alone was worth it
I was playing Tekken 3 and the movie theater allows for inserting Tekken 1 and Tekken 2 discs to play the fmvs. Is there a way to do it in the core? I tried loading Tekken 1 & 2 and it would reboot and load those games instead.
there is but it is kind of annoying. if the directory the current image in has a file named 'noreset.txt' it will not reset the core when a new disc is swapped in
Thanks for the heads up, is that documented somewhere? I don't remember ever seeing it posted before.
you can also put all tekken games into the same folder, then you can also just change the disc
that is the normal multi cd solution. noreset.txt is more a special solution for e.g. switching to a music cd
So we could (somehow) prepare a music CD for Ridge Racer 1 and use a noreset.txt to play music? 😳
yes, put a noreset.txt file into the rdige racer directory and change the disc in OSD when the main menu is loaded i think should work already
Very cool. I gotta figure out how to make the music cd work next 😅
Definitely need to try this with Vib Ribbon
can't read 😦 🙂
also useful for monster rancher
and vib ribbon
I kinda wish there was a way to control this on the fly instead of having users drop files. sometimes you just want to do it as a one off.
but I don't think a separate menu item for it is justifiable, so I dunno
you can open the lid, load a new cd and then close the lid in OSD
Just like the real thing, haha
that'll still process and cd_bios.rom files the user has. although if you are putting those in audio cd directories you get what you deserve
what I do notice is that there's basically no way to stop main from swapping the save file out in those cases. so that might be a bit surprising
is there a way to set open lid and bring up the menu to load a disk to hotkeys on a keyboard perhaps?
Select a game image with the lid opened will never reset? This is brilliant.
it will change the memory card unless you also turn off the automount memory card option
so if you're doing it to swap discs for audio, you just have to know about that behavior
Does there have to be anything in the text file or is it just blank and the name of the file enough?
It only swaps memory cards for game images in their own folders since by default the memory cards take the name of the folder so that you can have multi disc games in the same folder as each other and they all use the same card
yeah, just saying if people are doing it to swap in audio cds or whatever they're gonna get confused when their save is 'missing'
is their an up-to date psx_dualram build around here or is it the 2022 one from test build channel the last one?
#1046940919607345272 message
whch games would you recommend for the PSX2X core?
e.g. something that can hit 60fps
Revolt 🙂
Ghost in the Shell plays really well with the PSX2X core. Fun game.
Hi all, getting on much better with my playstation Mister set up since the last time I posted!! I've got my SNAC adapter and pad situation all set up and saving with my memory card.
I was wondering if theres an easy way to back up my real memory card to a virtual one?
Thanks
If you can dump the memory card, it should be doable with https://github.com/ShendoXT/memcardrex
This is an easy one. with a real MC using snac as port1 and set a virtual one as port 2 just go the bios MC manager screen and transfer them across.
Thanks, I treid this, and picked a random game memory card, but I transfered them all, selected the Mister menu to "commit" the changes, but they didnt seem to persist when I tried to load that memory card again. Can you have non game specific memory cards?
Actually im talking non sense, I checked again after you said it and it did work!! Thanks so much appreciated!!
could have probably mounted a blank one from github, you use to be able to name them a certain way but I didn't see that in the readme https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer?tab=readme-ov-file#memory-card
oh brilliant, pro tip re blank one, thanks again
maybe easiest is to copy from snac slot 1 to virtual slot 2, then switch to non-snac slot 1 virtual memcard and copy it back there
that way you could load up the virtual memcard of the chosen game directly?
Thanks all, great ideas, very much appreciated. LOVING the PS1 core - not even tried the n64 yet - got the SNAC adapter for that as well! See yall around.
There goes another happy MiSTer customer
Hi, I need some help with an issue. I just did a fresh install of my MisterFPGA, I am trying to play Tekken 1, but there's this flickering line of pixels on the top corner of the screen. Any ideas how to fix this?
Here's my current INI setup for reference
The TV I'm using is a LG C3
Is that the only game that does that?
I'm not sure, it's the only game I have on my MisterFPGA at the moment
If you give me a few minutes I could add more
It’s possible that’s actually part of the game and due to CRT overscan you’d never see it when it came out.
If that's the case, then I would need to enable vertical cropping right?
Yeah if it bothers you. But definitely check a few other games first to make sure it’s not some external issue to your setup.
Another question. When enabling vertical cropping, what does 216/256 & 224/270 mean
I'm most concerned about burn in, because I'm using an OLED 😅
Now that I think about it, I believe I noticed this aswell on my Retrotink 5x when I didn't crop out the overscan. I was playing tekken mostly on my ps1 but the laser is starting to give out
The Vertical crop options, which are made available when Fixed VBlank is turned on, is similar to the 5x scaling in other cores, but due to the nature of many PSX games using either 224p or 216p, then there have been two options made available for your convenience.
Link to more PSX core option explanations - https://mister-devel.github.io/MkDocs_MiSTer/cores/highlights/psx/#fixed-blanks
Cool, I'll check this out soon. Currently trying to figure out another issue, my controls in Crash team racing isn't working
But the controls do work in the bios, and in tekken
I'm using Snax64. Everything worked last I used my MisterFPGA, not really sure what's wrong
Check your controller input in the core menu.
If you change your controls you’ll need to save your settings for it to persist.
Just did, it's set to Snac port 1
Plugged into the SNAC port?
Analog button light on/off?
controller plugged into SNAC port 1?
Yup, Snap plugged into snac port, psx snac adapter plugged into port 1, and ps1 controller plugged into port 1
Light is supposed to be on, it's off
Where can I find the PSX2X core?
Gonna try another build out of curiosity
It’s in the pins
I don't have access to pins
Wait, I think it's placed in settings now 😭
Well, apparently my MisterFPGA doesn't like the 2x core now...
obligatory: did you use filezilla?
No, I download it via chrome
how did you put it on the mister?
Drag and drop into console core folder
oh wait, direct link to github. did you right click -> save as or something?
Right click save as
yeah, I bet you downloaded html
click on the filename, and the on the next page, click on 'View Raw'
Weird, it says rbf as the file type
do not right-click save as, just normal click and it will download the right thing
Ok, that fixed that problem
But unfortunately my controls still don't work for CTR
I think this may be a bug with the newest build, I just tested another analog compatible game and it works. Game tested is ape escape @serene nebula
Snax64 + PS1 dual shock?
I’ll get my stuff to test
Yup
No issues using the controller with Crash Team Racing
What multitap are you using, also NTSC-U version?
Here's my setup
Please do, I was hoping to use my oem cards
No issue with multi tap either
Hmm, I'm not sure what the issue is then. Other games are working fine, only this one
I'm re downloading the game, and I'll add it back to my SD card again, that's the only thing I can think of
It’s either your game, your multitap, or your controller. No issues with the core.
Maybe the PSX adapter or SNAX adapter but it would either work or not work.
@polar horizon What power supply you running?
The upgraded one, can't remember the name right now.
Ok, this is very odd. My multitap works on my ps2, works on tekken, and analog games like ape escape, but refused to work in CTR.
My controller works without the multitap
CTR works on my ps2 aswell
With the multitap
Maybe something funky going on with your multitap
Try pulling out the PSX adapter cable out slightly from your multitap and see if that does anything
It all worked before, I just used this a week ago :/
do you have another multitap to test with?
No
You can do a virtual memory card with SNAC, it should be the default option.
I really struggle to believe this is a multitap issue, why would ape escape work but not ctr?
Yeah, I've considered but I really wanted to use my memory cards
Because it would’ve been a reported issue by now and no one has ever brought that up or reported it.
This is a hobbyist project that’s bleeding edge. There could be a myriad of electrical reasons for failure.
Would you happen to have a build from sometime in april-june
it’s extremely odd you’re right
That's the last psx build i used before updating
If its a core issue then why does it work for me
But to answer your question I don’t have one, sorry
I'm not sure, but it's my last option before I put my MisterFPGA back in the closet LOL
Everything works on everything else, it's so odd
I recommend not bothering with your real memory card for that game
you can grab old releases here:
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/tree/main/releases
Or try to find a different multitap to test
If an old build works for you then great, I hope it’s as simple as that
whats the issue? CTR + snac + multitap + real memcard?
yes, CTR isn't responding to any inputs
Yeah can you test that too?
is the memory card part important?
I put away all my stuff already lol
maybe but i think i may of sold all my real memory cards at this point 😄
@polar horizon do you still have problems without the memory card inserted into the multitap?
In your image above you didn’t have it inserted
Yes
Damn
idk if its relevant but CTR is a game that actually supports the multitap wheras ape escape isn't
Hmm, what's another multitap game then. I could test it out
I didn’t have any issues with the game. Even used the same exact PSOne controller and multitap as he did.
Used the same MisterAddons SNAX accessories too.
are you on snax64 too?
Replicated his setup almost one to one
Yeah, it's so odd. Then I tested with the same setup on my ps2 and it worked perfectly
Let me try another multitap enabled game
yeah that’s a good idea @abstract drift
If this doesn't work, my last option would be to check the fuses in my multitap
Game is downloading rn
also maybe try setting the second controller port in the core to none
idk if ctr could be seeing a fifth controller there and not liking that
Ohhhhh
Damn good call
Pretty sure my second player input is set to disabled by default
Welp, it seems like a fuse may be blown in my multitap, damn.
Oh wow, how did you find that out?
Rampage 2 doesn't work, tried connecting 3 controllers and it refuses to acknowledge its inserted
Even on your PS2?
Gonna test now, I have a disc burning
@serene nebula it works on my ps2 😭
Tested all 3 controllers in rampage 2, worked fine
Haha crazy
I even took apart my snax64 adapter to physically examine it, and everything looks perfect in there
Really not sure what's going on
I hope the USB port of my Mister or the Snax adapter isn't messed up. But if it was, I feel like it wouldn't work at all...
Tried disabling it, didn't work
Sorry dude
Also testing 4p in the n64 core, just to rule out a potential issue with the adapter. And it worked
It's all good, I'll revisit this another day. Been very frustrated with MisterFPGA, gonna put it back away for now and use my ps2
Yup, didn't work which was surprising
Damn sorry to hear that. Anything else I can help out with to eliminate those frustrations?
For some reason my LG C3 has been unhappy with my MisterFPGA too, especially after the firmware update so it definitely isn't a MisterFPGA issue 😅
Just a few too many no signal screens
No, youve done more than enough I really appreciate it. I'll probably buy another multitap, just not happy with the fact that I gotta use money to potentially solve this issue lmao
Yeah, the PSX core performs exactly like a PS1 so it’s going to spit out a bunch of different resolutions.
Some TVS hate it
Yeah, that's kinda why I wanna run my mister into my RT5X
If CTR is the only game with the issue, don’t worry about the physical mem card. You can probably convert and copy that save over later if you need to
Yeah, I could. I guess what's frustrating is I use MisterFPGA for it's ease of use, but lately it feels anything but that. Kinda regret doing a fresh install now lmao, I don't even have the desire to play anymore 😅
Also try setting ** vsync_adjust** to 0 in your mister.ini if you haven’t already
Yeah friend, I totally get you. I’d be feeling the same.
Never give up! Fight fight fight!
Well if you feel like taking another look later hit us up. We want you to have fun with it and not have issues.
Sorry again for the issues you’re having
Yeah, it sucks at times. I also think I'm generally just losing love for the hobby, tinkering specifically. I realized I'm doing more testing than I am gaming, and I hate that. My first post was at 8:18pm and now it's 10:24pm I feel like I'm going crazy LMAO. Then between financial costs of maintaining these old electronics, or mods, and the time needed, I am so burnt out. I even left my electronics repair job too, I'm just burnt out from it all tbh
I appreciate it! I'll definitely drop a message again if I decide to tinker with it, I'm probably gonna watch anime in the meantime and call it a day
for what it’s worth, I agree with you 200% and I’m the exact same
I'm glad that I'm not alone, it's been feeling that way for awhile in this hobby. I've been in this hobby for a decade now, and while it's understandable things changed, especially after the pandemic, I'm left totally burnt out 😅
It's why I'm such a big fan of retrotink products, the 5x has worked without issues, 100% of the time. All my consoles are connected, it just works right away
@serene nebula Kinda offtopic but I'm feeling the same way with PC's too. Between optimization issues, bugs, and having to upgrade every Tuesday, I've caught myself just gravitating to my ps5 more often, just to get into a game quickly
Sometimes you just want to sit down and play a game, I respect that.
thx man
the saves on mister can be used on original hardware or viceversa?
i'm buying one of those memory cards that backup the saves on a sd card and I was wondering if I can extract them and continue on mister
Yeah you just have to change the file extension. I did this with a memcard pro.
Have a problem with getting a DS4 controller to work in PSX core. Only down on dpad works. Setting controls in core doesn't change anything. Can I reset it to default somehow? Reset settings does nothing
does it work fine in other cores? You might want to re-do the Mister-wide setup to make sure that it is correctly recognized: https://mister-devel.github.io/MkDocs_MiSTer/setup/controller/
lovely, thanks!
@polar horizon if the multi tap is working in everything but ape escape you should still be able to copy your CTR saves over in the raw bios by manually mounting the virtual memory card in the CTR folder and setting SNAC for p1 so it sees your physical card
Ok, I'll keep that info in mind. Ended up playing the game on my ps2 instead for now
@serene nebula I found the issue, it is a blown fuse on the ps1's multitap. Port's 1-3 work, but not 4. CTR started giving me issues aswell on PS2, all the controllers would drop their connection when a 4th controller was plugged in
Oh wow that’s wild! I’m sorry to hear about that.
Is that fixable?
Yes? I think so, I'd just need to find a diagram and figure out where the issue is. Unfortunately there's no much info available on multitaps, my best bet for my mental health and time is to just buy another 😅
How do I mount virtual memory cards? Moreso, where do I get the file from
When lanched and with auto save on in the OSD, Psx games in their respective folders will automatically generate a memory card just for the game in "Saves/PSX" directory on the SD card. You can duplicate one of the memory cards and name it something else, then manually mount it in the OSD, by navigating to the same "Saves/PSX"
I can't just generate 1 card for all my games?
You can but psx memory cards are limited to 15 blocks, so you'll run out of space extremely fast. The core creates memory cards based on folder. So if you put all your games just into the games/psx folder they'll all share the same memory card. If you put them all into their own folder they'll each create a memory card with the name of that folder. This is meant for multi disc games, so the save is shared between all discs of ff7 for example.
I know, I just wanted the traditional experience where I had shared memory cards. It's for the nostalgia
Was going to use real memory cards but my multitap died
Then don't use subfolders and you can do just that.
Ok, that's perfect then
Turn off auto mount or mount your full memory card to slot 2
Alternatively you can just manually load a memory card in the core whenever you play a game. Here’s a blank memory card - https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/raw/main/memcard/empty.mcd
Hey all - having trouble with my sound. Its crackling and also will not go up or down. It stays at a constant volume no matter what. Not sure what to do here.... was working at one point and now its not.
Analog audio? Or via hdmi?
Which analog board? 9.2?
works fine if i go directly to my speakers though which is interesting
Yes 9.2
but also still getting crackling no matter what
So there is an issue with boards based on the 9.2 io board design. Crackling in some PSX and megacd games. I dunno if it’s been reported to sorg or not.
Is it only in PSX and megacd games?
seems accurate but not confirmed. Thats a bummer, so no fix as of right now?
If you can do digital to your dac, you shouldn’t have issues
what cable? 3.5mm to toslink?
use a mini toslink adapter, and plug it into the MiSTer's 3.5mm jack
most optical cables come with one
any cheap DAC will do - I use something like this:
i have a fiio k7 that im using and can use a mini-toslink to toslink cable if that will work
Anyone able to get Disney Goofy's Fun House to get past the first loading screen? I tried the 2X core and increased the CD speed and nothing.
I was able to get it load in duck station, so the disc image should be good.
usa or pal ?
that is where I am sitting too. That disk just keeps spinning....
I saw a retro achievements board where other people where complaining about constant crashes on loading screens, but they were able to increase the CPU to mitigate it in RetroArch
Probably related to the disc reading. Some games do not like the faster loading.
yeah - I tried all the fast and regular options
we need a half speed load :p
we need to simulate a disk drive with 3-5 years of dust on the lens
I'll try turning the MiSTer on it's top
Guess I wasn't giving it enough power - lol
Yeah I'm cruisin through stuff finding games for kids
beauty is in the eye of the beholder, kuba
102 Dalmatians isn't bad - like an easier Spyro made by Crystal Dynamics (surprisingly)
Hercules is the best
yeah - Toy Story 2 is also pretty good
Also surprised there is no Pole Position core, but thankfully Namco Museum exists
Prepare to qualify
Best quality of this commercial yet!
Can someone help me out? I want to apply the Alundra Un-Worked patch to the German PAL version, but I'm unable to find the game with the correct MD5 hash: http://stargood.org/unworked/alundra.php
Sorry, we can’t discuss where to find copyrighted material on this Discord. Thank you for understanding.
Thanks, have been busy will try it
As a typical CRT user, please forgive some perhaps obvious HDMI questions.
Does using the widescreen hack typically alter aspect ratio? Is there some work around for that?
https://mister-devel.github.io/MkDocs_MiSTer/cores/highlights/psx/#widescreen-hack
I guess the aspect ratio change is standard as in the example video. Suppose I could add custom INI aspect ratio values
I've got some flicker at the top of the screen in PAL Aquanaut's Holiday (same result in Duckstation). Are the crop filters intended to get around this? They don't seem to remove it.
Hello, is this a known issue or non-issue with the PSX core? The game is Parasite Eve 1:
I'm ashamed to admit it but I've never played PE1 🤯
I like that game a lot, came after FF7 and it's very.. experimental and ambiental.
Good game IMHO
I have finished PE2 several times
Is it the square? Do you mind describing the issue?
Yes, of course: It's that back square sometimes appearing when the pterodactyl does it's magic. That enemy (and the apparent glitch) happens on the museum area.
Are you using the core that fixed RE2 ?
it was never released through update all. Has to be manual
Do you mean the core that fixed Resident Evil 2 background showing squares?
yes
No, I'm using latest core available on update_all, but looking at this:https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/commits/main/
...I see there was a release after the RE2 fix.
Yes , it was released
The black rectangle appears when the magic is run, it's NOT part of the background
Before was mdec issue
That's it. RE2 was fixed in https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/commit/e08ee19632c8e7355693e7de0d9f5dd9857adfb8
What puzzles me is that Parasite Eve is a popular game, so this issue being unnoticed (it it's an issue at all) would be strange
I tried all the GPU-related settings, nothing seems to have an effect on it
are you running with no options turned on with cd at 1 x speed
no cheats
no turbo core
Nothing that would alter the PSX vanilla working is activated, of course
well it has to be asked
because people run trubo with cheats and other unsafe options
My first experience with the MiSTer was turning on turbo in the Genesis core and then playing Sonic the Hedgehog seeing everything broken lmao
not a good experience after spending all that money
share a save state nearby maybe someone can repro
I am ready to test
Is this fix in the last released buid or in the latest unstable build?
Noticed the same bug in mednafen a few years back whe playing the game.
All fixes are in the latest official build
Of course! 🙂
I completed PE a year ago with the core and had no problems and no sign of this bug you mentioned.
@chilly kraken @abstract drift : This is a savefile on the museum area. Go must go up to the upper floor to find the pterodactyl enemy.
Sometimes he makes a "pink" magic attack: when you are on the lower part of the screen, the black rectangle appears sometimes.
The savegame is as near as I can to the problem.
Shouldn't take more than a minute or two to fight the pterodactyl enemy
I’m unable to find the fight. The stairs are locked in the lobby, but I found other stairs deeper into the museum. I fought a rapier, but no pterodactyl.
I need to run errands but I’ll futz with it when I’m back
save state would probably be better
probably, I spent 15 minutes trying to find this fight and I couldn't figure out where it is on the 2nd or 3rd floors
at least that explains why noone else has found the issue so far 😅
This is a savestate in a pterodactyl fight, but now I can't reproduce it...
The person who reported it to me (my girlfriend who was playing on the upper floor of the house...) and made the screenshot was playing an spanish translated version, so probably caused by the translation altered font and no core bug, sorry guys if that's the case.
I found the fight (playing the US version), and I do not get the visual glitch on any of his attacks
Probably we can forget about the matter. NEVER EVER should I report a possible bug on a translated game. Sorry, really.
In my opinion, any report of a potential error is good
Agreed.
Yes, but I made you guys travel the museum scenario back and forth to look for the right right 😄 Sorry about the time wasted on that
It’s Saturday

I also tried a US copy patched to spanish, and I didn't encounter this visual glitch while loading your save state, everything looks properly blended. I ensured all my core options were on the defaults, no direct video, over HDMI.
Then I don't know. I thought it was the translation patch since it alters the font...
Are you doing direct video? I missed if you said
No, I only use HDMI around here 🙂
Ahh ok. Then yeah, who knows. Ghosts.
Oh no! I had these four guys beam'n trap the ghotst around my house last year.. no cheap thing! 😦
*3 in the pan and scan version
"I see what you did there"
I have a question concerning the video options of the PSX core. I play on a OLED screen with video mode 13, which is 4/3 aspect ratio. When I use fixed hblank and vblank without crop it seems to me that the image is squashed horizontally. What would be the best setting to help with screen shaking and still keep the 4/3 aspect ratio?
From my personal experience, if you want to get a slightly more wide screen view in your PSX games with the widescreen mode, use 3:2 mode.
When graphics are rendered on PS games, they are rendered only slightly out of view so that as you move a camera around in 3D, you don't see any pop in/loading of textures resulting in black/missing textures.
3:2 aspect ratio lets you see the extra bit off screen without the black textures. anything wider will start showing black textures usually.
this of course isn't necessary on a 4:3 display (like an SD CRT).
but it doesn't cause stretching or cropping if that's what you were ultimately asking.
(at least not as far as I'm aware)
A little stretching though I think. You can check the video I linked from the help page. Watch the car stretch horizontally. Seems perhaps the same for all settings of extra screen, all changing aspect ratio far as I can tell
tbh the only game I've bothered to mess around with in widescreen and actually play was TR
different games might respond differently then to the hack.
that one it seems ever so slightly stretches with every aspect ratio on the 3D real time rendered stuff, and the static 2D HUD stuff just gets stretched (which makes sense)
so there is ultimately "stretching" but only on HUD elements in games that use a very simplistic type of HUD setup where it's a static 4:3 image that gets updated with transparency applied to see through, and it's programmed to simply "fill" the viewport. so when the viewport changes from 4:3 to something wider, it's just "filling" the space which causes it to be stretched
other games that have a more dynamic HUD might work more correctly.
and games with a type of HUD that looks fine when stretched will also be less noticeable, like in TR for example, where typically the only static HUD element is the health and breath bar in the top left, and it being elongated doesn't feel off at all.
2D fighting games also look pretty ok too when stretched
For future reference of anyone looking at this PAL Aquanaut's Holiday does indeed have a flicker at the top of the screen on original hardware.
I guess it is inboard of the typical crop filter values, it is visible well inside the viewable area on a CRT, so I can imagine the crops probably don't tend to go so far
Interesting to see how quickly I forgot the flicker was there on CRT, but found it far more distracting over HDMI. +1 CRT's
maybe on CRT it wasn't there back in the day because of overscan
and maybe the green values on your CRT were lesser coupled with low resolution and CRT mask and blending, it just literally wasn't as noticeable
I’m putting together a list does anybody have any good suggestions for things that run significantly better or comically fast on the ps1 turbo core?
I run PSX2XCPU for a fully modded out (widescreen, no dithering) silent hill playthrough with no frame dips. Mostly for fun
Blasphemy. I always enjoyed psx dithering and think it's a rather charming graphics style.
For Silent Hill on an lcd it’s a bridge too far for me, on a crt it still looks good… still better without though lol.
… with the 24 bit enabled I should clarify
I don't know about comically fast, but games like Symphony of the Night run considerably faster
I don't think there's any game on the PS1 that will run like it's being put into hyper speed fast forward where the sound speeds up with it making it all high pitched in frequency.
You'll need an emulator to do that.
I would think a lot of 2D side scrollers where the game speed is tied to FPS and CPU clocks are going to be what gets the biggest "speed up" effect
I have run into a few now that will run at almost double speed. Mega man battle and chase is so fast that you can barely drive lol
Luckily you can adjust the amount of turbo you want
My mindset on the 2XCPU core is that if I never had an issue with the original game, I’ll stick to the main core.
If I know the framerate is less than stable and it bothered me before, I’ll try turbo out.
quake2 gets a good boost
Pretty sure I read someone call it the “Pro” core the other day. Can that be the name now, please? 😅
PSX Pro 😎
Makes me think of an alternative timeline, where Sony did make an upgraded PS1 model late in like 1999 or something. Like a stop gap because the PS2 got delayed and they made it in response to the Dreamcast launch.
They did. This portable PS One
Any reason my fiio k7 will not control my volume with ONLY the PSX core? It works fine with all the other cores I have been using but with playstation it just stays at one volume no matter what. Analog out to RCA in
Pins updated. Please let me know if I need to add something. Thank you.
What exactly is it that you updated?
I think it's a bot now. said the same thing in multiple channels
mods plz take care of this
Incorporated links to the fixed MDEC test core (dual and single) into the "official" pins
That’s almost a Sonic Adventure pose
MDEC fixes are already present on the latest release, if I'm not mistaken...
yes, correct
Strip away his mod privileges!
When dumping my psx games. Should i save them as .chd? Is there any downside to using .chd?
You got this one @chilly kraken ?
no.
there is a more complicated "chd may cause problems with the saturn core due to index 02 shenanigans, but the psx core isn't aware of index 02 so don't worry about it" answer, but the short answer is is "no, there is no downside on PSX"
Sweet, thank you
He got this one
So what's the downside on saturn then?
let me massacre the information from Zakk's comments on the topic:
Basically, CHD doesn't take anything on the cuesheet beyond index 01, so if a cd has tracks at index 02 and beyond, they won't be indexed in the CHD. This doesn't matter on the PSX core because it doesn't know anything about index 02 anyway - but the saturn core does. I believe it just means that music tracks won't work properly - but there may be other implications
here is the mame bug: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/issues/10308
Aight, so is there any way to fix this?
I saw Zakk mention the mame devs have no interest in fixing it
And he also proposed a solution
So yes there’s a way, would likely require forking the chdman code base to do it
it's also only a handful of games that are impacted
I could do it without forking chdman, but you'd have to convert the game to an uncompressed chd, run a utility that parsed the cue and added mister-specific index metadata to the chd, and then recompress it
scriptable, but annoying
Could it be handled through a single batch file?
I mean, probably. but only needs to be done for the games it is an issue for. no sense in recompressing your entire library for this
and I need to look at exactly how the indices get used, it may be that I can generate subchannel data and do it the way mame will do it "one day"
One day is good enough. Thanks zakk!
I appreciate you dude.
🤜💥🤛
isn't the easiest workaround just to use bin/cue for these few games?
That's what I do.
It's certainly a minor issue but you still have to be aware of which ones have to be bin/cue and which ones are ok to have in chd. Kinda like the n64 patches before auto patching, the issue is of having to be aware of it imo.
just uncompress everything and set yourself free
Yeah, I have all my games uncompressed on my external ssd
When transferring to MiSTer, I CHD compress them and move them over there. I don’t keep CHDs locally.
weirdo
All chd, all the way.
Odd use case, between the various cores, can CHD's be read for music data? Like if I want to play Vib-Ribbon with PCE Ys 1+2 music
yeah
Anyone have a link to the latest dualRAM build?
#1046940919607345272 message
pins updated with the right links
hi do you know how to make the vibration work on an 8bitdo sn30 pro wired? thanks
@simple heath Is dualshock mode turned on?
If not try pressing L3+R3+Dpad Up
It should vibrate when you turn the MiSTer on too.
If it doesn't you may not have enough power. A 5v 3a PSU is the recommended minimum
Vibrates but in PlayStation core it doesn't work
ok - it's a per game basis too. I know Gran Turismo is a good test for controller vibration. What games have you tried? FYI I have a SN30 Pro wired too.
Grab Turismo then do rally mode and you’re golden for rumble
There’s also a controller test exe you run in the core that will vibrate if you push in both sticks I think
I’ll update the pins with that link
Thanks everyone, I will also try to update the firmware
Anyone know what this redline is in the PSX core
Unsafe option artifact?
Widescreen option enabled?
Some on my games say unsafe option enabled, but I believe this one loaded in the correct bios
I don’t have it enabled I’m on all default settings and direct video
Why are you on direct video if connected to what looks like an LCD? Unless that's an old LCD monitor and you are trying to use direct video with VGA
Using morph 4K
yeah thats what the upscalies tell me, use direct video
Might be an artifact of the converter you are using
It's not a Pro. Fake fan!
I wasn't able to obtain that $1K serialized bundle when it went up for pre-order... and believe me, I tried. I had to settle for plain vanilla. 😉
I also tried. There are two on offer up in my area for 3k. If I can snag one for like 1200, I’d probably do it. But that won’t happen so I won’t worry about it
omg, model train Densha de Go - https://youtu.be/zGkPEjU447E
N Gauge Unten Kibun Game: Gatan Goton - Gameplay
N Gauge Unten Kibun Game: Gatan Goton is a exclusive Japanese train simulator game, developed by Beyond Interactive and published by Toshiba EMI in 1999.
0:00 Intro
2:27 Gameplay
8:31 Credits
NOTE: Recorded in the original 4:3 aspect ratio and original game graphics (no filters, shaders etc...)...
Woah
It’s pretty cool, being based on video capture like the Train Simulator Real series on PS2, and RailFan series on PS3.. A touch more choppy, though!
(Also, PSA to whom it may concern: Do check out RailFan on PS3, it’s awesome)
Something something n-gauge on MiSTer
Only if it’s compatible with snac
N-Gage is 104MHz ARM. Not likely
might as well use the HPS, its an ARM right? 😆
Just a dumb reference to the gauge of model train track in robby's link 🙂
Taco talkie
Best phone I ever had. Still have it together with all the games. 🥳
I'm calling the police
You ever hear the story/urban legend about why the button layout on the ngage is that way?
Oh yes...
bruh.
Heheheh
Don't suppose anyone has a link or can point me to the latest 2xpsx/turbo core please
#1046940919607345272 message
Thank you kindly. I'm finally looking forward to giving the core a go. (I just booted the standard core up with the game 40 Winks. Huge nostalgia hit)
Are there any downsides to 24bit render? Combined with turning off dithering it looks insanely good in silent hill.
Only down side I can think of is it breaks the underwater effect in metal gear solids intro when the sub passes. But that’s a minor thing
really? the horrible color banding on the streets didn't bother you?
24bit on vs off. Both without dithering. Sorry I don't see the banding with 24bit render enabled.
you wont see banding with 24bit, thats why its such a nice option for those that dont like to see dithering
One downside is that you’re a heathen for disabling dithering, aka the greatest visual effect of all time.
I'm not against dithering per se, I think it's rather charming. I was just suprised that the fog actually looks like fog.
I wish I could dither real life
I prefer to smear Vaseline on my glasses for the N64 look
(Or just removing them would do the same thing, I guess 😅)
Ok so its not enough to use HDMI, you actually have to activate 24bit rendering, as in, its not native to the console?
I guess I will give the psx library a try with this option on
Yeah you activate it in the psx core under audio and video. Where you also disable dithering.
There's a filter for that
I don't how I could have missed it 😂
has anyone else experienced hiccups in Elemental Gearbolt? I had to turn on 4x speed and other stuff to mitigate it
I have two PSX options. With the normal core I do 100% original and then I go buck wild with the turbo core.
Is there a separate core for the dual ram version of psx?
It’s basically pointless though 😅
I thought so as well until I installed a second ram stick for the saturn core. Now I think single ram cores are for plebs and amateur gamers.
I mean, if you’ve got dual, why not? But at the same time, have fun manually scouring for builds whenever there’s an update
Saturn core is a different beast though
I think everyone should just ignore the dual sdram psx build
Grandia wouldn't stop flickering without it so there was no other choice. And I was already on a digital io board
like not even mention it exists when people ask about dual sdram cores
That would only increase it's allure when it's the secret and forbidden fruit.
Just quote this:
#1052057593654284329 message
But I agree with you. It’s just increasing the maintenance burden and wasting CPU cycles building the rbf at this stage
I added a second ram stick for the new Saturn and Jag builds so just thought I’d ask after the psx core
be careful asking about that, Zakk will get you!
Sounds like the timing improvements aren’t even noticeable? Lol I’d rather keep the standard core just for the convenience of update all grabbing it
yeah, that's the thing. it's like zero practical advantage
and for that you trade the annoyance if never having it auto update, and getting to play the 'hey where can I get the new dual sdram build' anytime it is updated
It raises the black level in silent hill so areas that should be pitch black are dark grey instead
I don’t remember the precise details (I’d have to look it up), but I’m pretty sure that the “problem” with the single ram core is that occasionally some sound samples are delayed by like… nanoseconds.
I think people are well intentioned when they say “you’d have to be a machine to tell the difference”, but I think that almost encourages people to go for it because people tend to think that maybe they’ll be the one to feel the difference. By using the numbers it really puts into context how small a difference it is. It’s really not worth the loss of auto updating, the additional CPU cycles to build the core etc imo.
Beep boop.
@somber steppe Can tell the difference. Confirmed!
@somber steppe You should turn on texture filling all and set it to 100% and see how it looks
A bit blurry!
Lol.
Tried that and didn't like it too much tbh.
I like 50% for most all games
It's just enough to smooth out the pixelated textures while not getting so blurry
I'm using mister with an rt4k, so if I want a blurry picture or crt style aesthetic I just use a profile on that.
I don't use it for CRT aesthetic cuz I use it on a CRT lolol
I don't even know how it would even lend itself to an CRT look anyways
I use it because a lot of games textures are detailed in a way where it's just pure blocky and chunky pixels at a low resolution making them look messy and the texture filter helps soften those details to look more clean
But it doesn't work for every game
This is from when I played around with it in final fantasy
Yeah, 24bit with dithering off is the only way I can play SH1. That game is so heavily dithered it’s distracting imo. It was really meant to be played with composite video blending the dithering.
I will say, it was pretty funny, though, playing with dithering off not in 24bit. Looked like a hellish fever dream.
So what happens if you apply anti dithering codes in silent hill on a real ps1?
Do you still get 24bit color?
I remember the first scph-1001 consoles had color banding on some games
Nah, I remember My Life in Gaming covering it, you get that ugly color banding.
you don't get 24bit to begin with on real hardware. forcing 24bit in the core is a hack basically. typically only video files (cutscene stuff) was 24bit on the PS1.
games themselves were outputting 16bit
which is why a composite signal helped a little coupled with the dithering
ps1 cannot store 24bit from GPU to VRAM, only mdec(movie/still image) or CPU can draw 24bit.
24bit mode in the core will store the additional bits generated by the GPU somewhere else in DDR3.
And yes, some games(e.g. FF8) show flickering in the usually "hidden" lower 3 color bits that can be distracting, but most should be fine
I'm having so much fun with the PSX core.
I have only came across a few games that do not have a stable frame rate.
It makes me realise how the PS1 would run these games on actual hardware.
try shadowman 😛
Oh, ok il have a look.
What also surprised me that Duke Nukem Time to Kill has a built in "game speed" setting.
it's the worst performing game i came across, running sometimes as low as 6fps on the real console. With 2x cpu and turbo it gets kind of playable at 15fps+
Yeah I currently use the 2x CPU with a medium turbo I believe. Just to help with games like Harry Potter and Duke Nukem.
I'm also shocked how my TV supports these weird resolutions. Because of the video scaling mode I have set with the mister.
1624x1040 for Duke Nukem Total Meltdown.
Ah in that case maybe I tried de-dithering on a real console and thats why I saw the horrible banding on silent hill 2. The checkerboarding suddenly wasn't so bad 😅
Oh Both Land of the Babes and Time to Kill (Duke Nukem) have a built in Game speed slider. I wonder if it actually does anything
Seems like it just makes the game slightly faster (the gun firing speed has definitely changed)
Did some more testing. Land of the Babes seems to run amazing with turbo on High.
Time to kill, also has no more slowdown, however the framerate isn't capped so it will go up to 40 in some areas hahaha.
another unplayable game that becomes playable when the CPU is overclocked to actually be somewhat decent is Re-Volt @lusty coral
it's a somewhat crappy RC car style racing game
crappy but playable
I’ve got just the controller for it
First time setting foot in this chat, sorry to bother you all.
Is there a compatibility list for this core? I don't see one in the pins (not referring to the GitHub issue list).
I ask because, this week, I've been playing the game Linda³ Again, and I'm at the end (of the first scenario).
Every time I try, the second half of the ending cutscene does not load on MiSTer, preventing me from clearing the game.
(Yes, the game files I have are Redump. No, I won't say anything about that beyond that.)
hi! everythings assumed compatabile at this point except the issues documented here:
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/issues
sounds like you may of found a new bug - you're playing the original jpn version ? no translation patches or anything? can you post a savestate nearby? someone can try to reproduce
I'm playing the English fan translation patch.
There's been a couple of instances where I've encountered an enemy, then the battle wouldn't load, but like this, I don't know if that's a bug with the game, the patch, or the MiSTer.
I'm going to check it out in DuckStation. If it happens there, we can at least assume it's not the MiSTer's doing.
thats always a good idea
@red lodge It would be helpful in knowing if it’s a bug introduced by the patch by testing an unpatched version of the game.
If you don’t have the time or desire that’s understandable so no worries.
I'm still slamming my head against trying to get DuckStation to read my save file from the MiSTer first.
Maybe this site can be of help?
Converts save files for retro consoles: MiSTer, srm to sav, sav to srm, GameShark (sps and gsv), PS1, N64, DexDrive, Action Replay, Retron 5, Wii Virtual Console, Sega CD, Nintendo Switch Online, emulators, various flash cartridge formats, and save states from online emulation websites. Decrypts PSP saves. Provides help for downloading save file...
Yeah it can mount one
I think duckstation can take those .vmc files but not 100%
That took far too long.
The converter you linked saved this endeavour, @serene nebula . Thank you.
DuckStation reproduces the error.
The MiSTer isn't at fault. False alarm.
So, the plot thickens. Testing the JP version on DuckStation with the same save file.
Works fine on the Japanese version. That settles it, it's a fault with the patch.
Thanks for going the extra mile and testing it all. You’re awesome!
I'm an idiot. I was on an earlier version of the patch this entire time. Updating to the most recent version fixes this.
Not an idiot at all! That’s good to know, friend. If anyone ever runs into the same issue I’ll be sure to point them towards getting the latest version. Cheers! 🍻
I have no idea how I downloaded such an outdated patch (it's nine versions behind), considering I only discovered the game last week.
Oh yeah that game got patched a ton the first few months after release
It’s on my list!!
I wasn't available before.
Yes, another user had the same error in the recent past.
Patch at fault.
Just finished Final Fantasy VIII on PSX 2CPU core. Amazing experience, imo just as good as when I played it about 25 years ago. Thanks Robert for making that possible 🙏 Up next will be FF IX when I find the time and FF VII when the Beacause translation hits r07
Never played a ff7 retranslation. Is it that different?
Yeah pretty much, its a very thorough retranslation. More info on https://thereunion.live/
what is the advantage of the 2x cpu for FF8? I wasn't aware it has slowdown.
does it not make the game run faster?
if so then it would be beneficial to not spending so much time slowly running around the world, and would make battles quicker
I think I've experienced some slow down in very few battles when lots of animation was going on. I think in some battles this was intended (some boss fights). Then I switched to the 2CPU core and haven't experienced it since. Two things, it might have been just my perception and perhaps it's identical to real hardware.
Only problems I had were save states that froze sometimes when reloaded. And an issue that was already issued here https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/issues/271. Squalls limit break in the ||final fight with Ultimecia|| is a little glitched. Haven't noticed that in other battles and I have used his limit break throughout the whole game a lot.
I think save states work fine if you first turn off turbo mode, load the state, then enable turbo to high to get the 2x OC again
I did a full run of Final Fantasy VII Beacause r06g (the current one) and there was a freeze just before that Aerith scene. I had to go back to the original to get past it and I could finish the game on the patched version afterward. I didn't know a r07 was planned?
I read many horror tales about r06g, like increased minigame difficulty (bug), hangs after +40 hours into the game, etc...
There's an Steam PC Retranslation patch for the PSX version (available at a certain site that is romantic about cd-roms) which is supposed to be way better.
So, the Reunion and its Because translation focuses on the PC version of FFVII. Beacause and some bug fixes were already ported by GreenGoblin over to the PSX version, with the latest version being R06g. This is a beta release with lots of changes but still far from the major/stable release R07.
Reunions R07 is set to be released somewhere next year, first for PC. After its release the creator will help GreenGoblin port R07 to PSX.
So the "good" release is still some way off and the current one freezes on mister? I'll wait then.
That's what I do too, I will wait for R07. Really excited to play it but just have to be patient. It's mainly one person (atm) who works on it and it's a huge undertaking. Even though the translation is more or less considered final at this point. It's been underway for a very long time and I think it will be very worth it.
I have a modded psx in case the r07 version still freezes in the core, to verify whether it's a core thing or psx thing.
as far as I'm aware, due to the nature of FPGA, if you have a game breaking issue in a modded version of the game, said issue should be present on original hardware as well.
Should, but always good to verify that it works on real hardware before hounding the core devs if it doesn't work on the core.
Yes the parade mini-game was broken.
OK, good to know! Except for the freeze and the parade mini-game I really liked this new translation.
Well, the Steam Retranslation PSX version is supposed to be bugless...
General reminder that if you run into any perceived bugs in this core, always assume it's identical to real hardware or if running a patched game, it's a bug with the patch.
Not saying there can't be issues, but you absolutely need that mindset to make sure you're first testing it against real hardware or software emulators to corroborate your findings before reporting it!
But people reaching out and being proactive about improving the core is always welcome. Y’all are awesome for doing that. I’m just trying to set expectations and inform on how fantastic this core is.
Did you just feel bad about your previous message? 😂
A little lol
After you killed all conversation!
I have those moments too 😄
That said, I think oftentimes people will post in here to first verify if there’s an issue before they put it on GitHub. I suspect many want to rule out hardware/config variation, or just don’t have access to original hardware
(At least, that’s what I do)
I realized I came across as not valuing previous reports or had concern that I gave that appearance. I really do value them, I just think about people who don’t post and lurk and wanted to help guide them.
And to your point, I might’ve sounded like people shouldn’t be doing what you just said. I think that’s awesome, I would do that too.
Nah, you’re good, dude. Plus people can just choose to ignore you
TRUE
So I shouldn't be playing romhacks on mister?
Robby has decreed that you must not. Only play as Miyamoto intended!
You guys need to learn the fine art of no forgiveness!
Is there a way to force 240p in the PSX core? I've got that option on an emulator in my GameCube and really like it.
Majority of games already run at 240p.
Unless you mean forcing 480i content to run at 240p?
Yep, that
There is a hack that can convert 480i to 480p, though your mileage may vary since some games glitch out when forced into 480p.
you can use deinterlace bob for 240p
but the image will flicker around as expected
Yeah, an emulator can do it because it can just take the frame buffer and then generate out at 240p, but this core isn't a software emulator, it's a a recreation of real hardware inside programmable hardware so it functions as real hardware would albeit with a few additions such as texture filtering and 24 bit output.
A software emulator has the flexibility of doing whatever it wants willy nilly because it's not really that beholden to the constraints of the original physical hardware, whereas FPGA is pretty much just that.
I assumed that the 480p hack did essentially the same thing (just dumped out the frame buffer)?
I tried and the 480p hack with Bob still makes a vibrating picture. Weave is stable, but you can't use fake scanlines to simulate 240p with weave.
Same here, hdmi user.
Maybe 'deinterlacing: off' option if forcing 480p in the future?
nope
cuz if you did that it would mess with games that don't play nice with said option, and maybe would affect analog users
Bob and weave are deinterlacing methods (bob “vibration” is normal) - if you’re using the 480p hack, then the output is progressive, therefore you shouldn’t need deinterlacing in that case (since there’s nothing to deinterlace…)
(I know nothing about video output though, so I could be wrong, but that was my understanding)
But if you’re not using the 480p hack, and the (original) output is 480i, then you absolutely want to use bob or weave 😄
I interpreted the message as saying that the option for deinterlacing or not should just be tied to the 480p option exclusively
Ah, my bad 😄

but also not sure if deinterlacing is necessary if you're outputting to HDMI with scaling cuz I think it's just using the frame buffer and scaling at that point isn't it?
and then if you do choose to use deinterlacing over an analog output, I would only have to assume it's because you are connecting to some really old LCD that has terrible deinterlacing tech, or really bad latency from letting the display do it itself (like a TV) cuz modern displays have really good and fast deinterlacing, and any of the three modern options for a scaler are also really good and fast
Yeah, that will happen if you have the widescreen hack on iirc
This is the intro scene iirc? When I tried it a few months ago I didn't notice any issues.
Ahhh, I might have that turned on from when I was playing on an Oled
The last I encountered it was months ago so I have no idea if it's still doing it or not
When games are a mix of 2d sprites and 3d graphics you will sometimes get issues like that.
or at least I have previously. Haven't tested it in a while.
Yup, turning the widescreen hack off fixed it. Thanks @viral inlet
No problem. I ran into the same issue.
PSX core continues its win streak!
So weird question, do you think it's possible to add buttons to a guitarfreaks controller? Like I want to add 2 more buttons and somehow let them be used in other unassigned buttons?
The later games need 5 guitar buttons and they're expensive in ebay like $850
any chance you could use like a rockband guitar on an adapter?
Might be able to with Santroller.
oh or since we're talking about mister, just use a rockband guitar? (no adapter required)
Is there a loss in information when converting a bin/cue with several bins to chd and later back to bin/cue? Since it's only one bin after converting back.
that's a Zakk question
no, the data should be the same. ignoring any stuff like multi-index that chd doesn't support. but just split bin -> chd -> single bin should not lose information
Thank you. 🙏 I noticed koudelka freeze on me, but could not replicate. I've been using chd but I'll go with bin/cue for the rest of the game. If it happens again I'll try harder to replicate it and report.
How’s the Arc the Lad series? Are the Working Designs PSX versions the one to play?
Not amazing, but not terrible. I'd consider them decent.
The first game feels more like a prologue to the main event that is Arc the Lad 2. Arc the Lad 2 is legit awesome in my opinion. It does things in its narrative that few RPGs do. The third game is okay, but very much feels like a step down from the second game.
Is there a scanline toggle for the PSX core?
For scandoubling? No, since you can't scandouble 480i and it's disabled for the core since there are many 480i games. You'll have to use a filter with scanlines
And if the video is 480i you'll have to use Bob deinterlace for the scanlines to show up (the video will vibrate though)
Scanlines are really a property of 240p only
Ok sweet. Thank you. Still learning with the Mister 🙂
Tell you what though. Spyro Year of the Dragon is running like a dream. I just use that 2x core with a medium turbo.
I think instead of scanlines you should look at just using a CRT mask filter only with PS1 @lusty coral
Cuz you only get noticeable scanlines IRL if the TV is like 32" or a high quality PVM.
Otherwise the lines are squished together enough on smaller cheaper consumer sets that you don't really see scanlines
Ah I see.
I've never really bothered with scanlines before you see. It was only when I tried the SNES core with scanlines and it looked amazing.
simpler pixel games like NES, SNES, Gameboy, etc. might look a bit better with scanlines, but 3D games like PS1 don't benefit much and it's the CRT mask that makes them look a little more "blended" together with the graphics.
@lusty coral check out some of these presets from Robby https://github.com/RGarciaLago/VIDEO_PRESETS_by_Robby
according to the github they are now a part of the main mister repo so if you happened to do update_all and are running the latest updates they should actually be in your MiSTer options already
otherwise you can manually add them by following instructions
some people here seem to like the JVC filter (already comes with MISTer)
robby's "Console - 5thGen" preset might also be good.
Thank you very much. Il give it a look the next time I'm on my mister 🙂
Has anyone experienced controller issues with the PSX core lately? I just booted up CTR and the X button don't work even if I remap the buttons. I'm updating the unit now but we'll see if this resolves the issue. I played on both the original core and the unstable core and the result is the same
Not recently, I was playing Spyro Year of the Dragon yesterday and the controller seemed fine.
It’s an issue on your end. Either bad mapping or controller problems. Delete your controller configs and try again.
Make sure to map your controller in the main menu and fully complete the process, hitting the user button to skip any inputs you don’t need, such as mouse inputs.
Yeah i just tested another controller after the update and you are right, its the controller
the xbox controller has LED lights, its probably the lights that disrupts the inputs
Interesting, what do you mean?
its a PDP xbox controller wired, it has LED lights that glow and shimmer with rhythm
Trying to find some solution to turn it off completely
Oh ok, I don’t think the LEDs will mess with the input process, which is good news. I think if you remap the controller in main and then map it again in the PSX core it should fix itself.
alright i remapped the controller in the menu and the core and the issue still remains, X button dont work at all
tried different remapps but still no results
The LEDs on the controller might be a power draw issue
Ohhhh! Didn’t even think of that.
Yeah I turned it off but it seems to still not work. I'm almost suspecting that the unit can't handle inputs from an Xbox controller. I've tried with other Xbox controllers and they don't work. The only controller that work is my arcade stick which has a brook chip and it automatically changes to preferred console on plugin
Just gonna buy a couple of 8bitdo controllers since they are recommended by the input delay guide I found while googling
Just for the record, what's the voltage and amperage of your power supply?
I just bought a 5V adapter which I got recommended from the mister help thread
All adapters have to be 5v. I think copy wants to know the amps
I used to have a weaker variant ( the one that comes in the box) which is 0.4a
Yeah sorry the Amp for the new one is 0.6a
3a is recommended
Welp, i just got the new adapter home...
After I got recommended to buy that specific one from the help thread
This has to be more standardized since now I've basicly wasted more money on a faulty adapter
I use a 2A just fine honestly. Can support 4 PS4/5 controllers at once with vibration
But more never hurts to have
Yeah, I run an mt32pi off my 2A, as well as the MiSTer and accessories
But 0.6Aa is below the required power
Last time I'm asking advice from the help thread....
Ait do you guys have a link for the adapter?
Is it a De10 or a MiSTer Pi?
I'll buy it the next payment
It's a De10
De10 should have come with a 5v 2a one
That’s the same one I’m still using, from the DE10 box
Lol. The .6a is input not output
Then if your controller isn't working it might be the controller
Maybe try deleting your controller profiles? I haven't had any issues with Xbox 360 or One controllers myself
HOWEVER the USB ports are basic USB2 and limited to 0.5A each, so your flashylights controller may still be a problem
If you have a PC can test your Xbox controllers on there
How do I remove controller profiles?
Yeah I turned the leds off completely so that's not the issue right now I think
Google doesn't give me good answers for deletion of controller profile
So i presume to just delete the profiles and the unit will not give me any problems afterward? Haven't dabbled with the mister on this level before so just checking
Deleting the profile just means that the mister will make a brand new one with defaults
Aah i see 👍
Yeah you'll just have to remap them from the main boot menu first (a general mapping for MiSTer itself)
Then do it again after the core is launched
So it's remapping the controller in the psx core and then remapp in the game?
And also remapp in the mister menu of course
So it's a total of three remaps needed if I understand it correctly
Mister - psx core - CTR game
I don't think you can map a controller per game unless the game itself has a controller remapping feature inside its settings
Ah gotcha
Like wipe out for example I think lets you remap the controller
I see you are a man of culture. Gaming in a winter wonderland
Alright I'll try that, gonna go to bed now since work is tomorrow. Appricitate all the help guys 😊👍
Then here
I'll let you know if I got it running, to be continued
Time to enjoy some Resident Evil Survivor.
It's a shame some PS1 games have an uncapped framerate.
A silver lining is that those games are a prime candidate for the turbo features and the 2x CPU core.
Yeah, that's what I normally use. Except it jumps from 30 to 45 and just keeps jumping
(looking at Duke Nukem Time to Kill and Rugrats).
Isn't that a good thing compared to like a locked 15 or 20 FPS?
Having a stable frame rate is better since it just makes everything more consistent.
If you are playing a game and the performance is incredibly unstable, it can cause a slew of problems, ranging from dropped inputs to actually causing motion sickness.
That's why there are people that are particularly fussy about having a high smooth framerate in their games.
Interesting. I'll have to try that Duke Nukem game to see if it affects me, I'm not sure it does though. I wonder if it's like how some people get headaches from the strobe effects of OLED while being perfectly fine with IPS (on phones screens).
Id rather a locked 30 than an uncapped framerate which constantly jumps from 30-45.
I agree, but would you rather have 15-30 over 30-45? 😉
Because I think that’s often similar to what happens when using the turbo cores. You go from “low fps and unstable” to “moderately higher fps and still unstable” 😄
you could try using the regular core and selectively enabling some turbo options to try and get it to a solid 30
That's a thing? How the F did I not know about turbo functions in the normal core?
yeah, they've been there for ages
I need to peruse the settings more I suppose. Outside of CRT filters I don't touch them much
the 2x core also goes like, even faster with those on
just as with all unsafe options you may encounter crashes etc
For sure. Science!
Koudelka is my favorite game to turbo, totally smooths out the fps and speeds up battles to a bearable pace
we tried to implement a 30fps cap at one point in early development but it didn't work out unfortunately
since some games break really hard above that
Like for games that have a lower hard cap? i.e. GTA and Twisted Metal 2 being locked at 20?
no for games that run at 30 but with some drops
to let you smooth them out without them freaking out and hitting 60, depends how the games vsync was setup
resident evil is one of them, its very funny with turbo on, runs at like 40+ fps and all the gameplay logic goes insane
like your torso runs off and leaves your legs behind insane
There should be patches that caps the frame rate.
I use the turbo core anyway. Most of the games id want to play are locked at 30 with the 2x core and turbo. It's just a couple of games that are uncapped. But what I can do is follow the advice from Freedom and try the regular core with turbo.
"Enjoy" is a strong word for playing that game.
Survive?
||it's really bad||
Isn’t it better if you play the Japanese/European versions? Where they actually have light gun support
I do remember it being panned very heavily back in the day though
A shame, cos it sounded like a good idea
It's even worse with the gun!
Oh 😂
Yeah it does have that budget Tose stank to it.
I don't hate that company necessarily, as they have made good games, but they do slip into that trapping of being that company publishers go to for a quick and cheap project pretty often.
Playing Final Fantasy VIII (8) currently and noticing some weird horizontal black line(s) that momentarily pop up then disappear, especially when opening/closing the menu.
Not a huge bother but I figure someone else already knows which setting is responsible. I’m outputting over HDMI to my LG C1. 1920x1440 resolution
Maybe try fixed vblanks, sync 480i to HDMI, and black transitions?
