I’m also in the “hoard all the ROMs on a NAS” club, but I use a ROM manager to manage it, and it does everything I want it to perfectly except support CHD*. 😭 But hopefully support does get added one day and I’ll be able to reclaim so much space. Haha.

*Unless the listings in the DAT are in CHD already, but of course they aren’t.

azure reef
#

I thought RomVault supported chd but never tried?

#

although that seems like it would be a pain to update your romsets

#

every time there is a change the game would need rebuilt and converted back to chd

#

maybe something can do that, would be nice if you only keep chd sets

#

i manage my zip sets, and convert to chd manually right now

#

and keep both

young sinew
#

RomVault only supports it if the DAT has the games listed in CHD, and as Redump are BIN/CUE it means it doesn’t work with them. No way to just compress it on the fly like you can with a ZIP option, for instance.

assuming storage not an issue, is CHD and bin format the same in terms of speeds/how the mister accesses the files?

oblique frost
#

for speeds, I think I remember chds having issues if you forced the cd speed hack to 3x/4x, other than that, if you're playing at original psx cd speed, there's no difference

serene nebula

there’s a different compression method for CHD that solves that issue

Don’t CHDs need to decompress data so that’s why the 3x or 4x hack messes them up?

@ivory verge I tried with real dualshock via SNAC and the rumble is completely different than with a DS4. No constant rumble, only for impacts with other cars, environment and simulated terrain transfers to like offroad/curbs

#

it feels great with snac, and seemingly broken with a standard DS4 when vibration is turned on in the menu

#

@tropic stratus possible this is a recent occurrence with how rumble support has changed in main since N64 rumble has been introduced? I havent used rumble in the ps1 core much so it could be just the same its been for a while. I'm using the latest mister unstable from 10/1

#

the rumble when using DS4 via usb feels like it is constantly using the max-force "impact" effect thats observed when playing with a dualshock 1 via SNAC

manic citrus
#

nothing changed in main regarding rumble

tropic stratus
#

could be that the game uses a base rumble value that makes the ds4 trigger already, but would not trigger the old ds1?

#

best would be to compile a test version that prints out rumble values instead of fps

#

but snac gets the same values by the game as USB controllers, so i'm not sure what the reason is

abstract drift
#

i've noticed something like this

#

there seems to be some subtlety missing from the usb rumble that is present on snac

ivory verge
abstract drift
#

its hard to describe exactly

manic citrus
#

remember there's a whole driver layer between 'psx rumble' -> 'your usb controller'

abstract drift
#

yeah

#

and its entirely different motors, voltages etc

ivory verge
#

for me the strangest thing is , when vibration for psx core appeared we all tested it , I don't recall anyone reporting such a problem then , and a lot of people tested Gran Turismo

#

but memory plays tricks

#

#psx-chat message

ivory verge
#

manic citrus
#

the psx/ps2 controllers also use higher voltages

#

I think the rumble motors are 7.6V? maybe 9?

#

the usb ones are probably 3-4V?

#

you're not going to replicate the same feel

ivory verge
#

i can try on PSX

unborn compass
ivory verge
#

GT2 is better in this regard

#

vibrations are not as strongly felt while driving

unborn compass
#

I have a Retrocastle SNAX which provides the correct dual shock voltage, so that would also be good for some extra testing.

meager parrot
# manic citrus you're not going to replicate the same feel

getting the same feel exactly isn't really the issue or expected given the differences in modern rumble in controllers vs Dualshock 1. The main issue is that it rumbles uncontrollably throughout entire races when the stock controller would not be rumbling at all. rumble is pretty subtle in the game and there is no constant effect, as is present with DS4 vis USB

#

rumble increases as you hold down the gas button which isnt the original behavior, and even continues to rumble to a lesser degree when the car is completely stopped on flat road surfaces

#

there is no actual effect as seen in the game with original controller, no impact rumble differences or terrain/curb indication rumbles

meager parrot
manic citrus
#

I guess the other question is how fast can a psx game actually update the rumble config? is it once per frame or can(and/or does) it happen multiple times a frame?

still palm
#

is it all games or just Turismo? Padtest lets you test the 2 motors independently.

#

Feel like this problem might have came up before.

#

like maybe turismo doesn't set the motor to 0 or something. and whatever value they rest at doesn't make the DS1 rumble but does make the usb controller rumble trhough whatever driver.

#

which is why I was wondering if it's game specific

abstract drift
#

its a shame the psx padtest can only test rumble on/off

meager parrot
still palm
#

did you try the padtest rom? you press R3 or L3 to activate each motor.

#

what turismo might be doing is it might always have some rumble in game like engine rumble or whatever and the usb driver is messing things up like detecting any value as ok now rumble full power.

manic citrus
#

the padtest is only fully on/off so it's not that helpful here. really need a padtest that lets you ramp the rumble values up and down

meager parrot
manic citrus
#

it doesn't mean the rumble value is absolute zero though, it could be something that's low enough to not cause any noticable rumble on a real controller, but due to the various differences causes rumble on usb through mister

abstract drift
#

almost like we have the wrong rumble "deadzone" or something

meager parrot
#

if it is some weird rumble deadzone situation, its far enough out of whack that it completely nullifies the game's original/intended effects completely. you dont feel them at all

still palm
#

no answers for you though, it does mention a couple games that use uncommon sequences. maybe try those.

meager parrot
manic citrus
#

also maybe try duckstation

#

duckstation applies both a configurable bias, and a curve adjustment to the rumble values

#
    const double x = static_cast<double>(std::min<u32>(state + static_cast<u32>(m_rumble_bias), 255));
    const double strength = 0.006474549734772402 * std::pow(x, 3.0) - 1.258165252213538 * std::pow(x, 2.0) +
                            156.82454281087692 * x + 3.637978807091713e-11;
#

the best part is it has a comment 'curve from <url>'

#

and the url is just some controller input plugin for multiple emulators

#

that just...uses that math with no explanation

#

so yeah, it's not just using the straight rumble values. let me try that, actually

still palm
#

might be worth seeing what value turismo gives.

dusky martenBOT
#
-- strong motor: "The Left/Large motor starts spinning at circa min=50h..60h, and, once when started keeps spinning downto circa min=38h"
manic citrus
#

does that path mess with SNAC values too?

still palm
#

no only usb.

manic citrus
#

also looking at that code, 'no rumble under 38h' isn't quite right, you have to delay when it ramp up from zero to 50h

still palm
#

so rereading what he said "there is no actual effect as seen in the game with original controller, no impact rumble differences or terrain/curb indication rumbles"

#

that made me think the values are wrong or something likes alwys FF. but snac worked fine.

make sure you are using this version of the game, most likely "Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (USA)" Redump verified

#

are you using the redump verified image?

no, honestly, can you mark it? i can see a banding in the wall next the stairs, but it's not square shaped?

These are the lighter areas of squares, rhomboids, which should be a solid color

ivory verge

It's very visible here

tropic stratus

ivory verge

Yes 🙂

tropic stratus
#

so to fix this: one would need to capture all mdec commands executed for decoding this area in a emulator then write a testrom that will send these to the mdec and execute it on a real psx and emulator, than compare pixel by pixel

#

this will not tell instantly why it fails, but at least it would be a way to play around with different roundings to see which direction it needs

#

i would assume it takes about 2 weeks to write such a test?

not sure how much data it will be, if it's fits in a exe or if it has to be read via CD commands

we have a github entry for it?

rose ermine
# pale sigil hi there - I'm trying to use a GunCon 2 with the PSX core without luck. is there...

Making sure that you've got it connected correctly? Yellow plug getting sync from somewhere, yes?

First thing after you're sure it's all hooked up correctly is to make sure you've assigned the controller. You can do that in the main mister menu, then you can adjust the buttons specifically in the psx core if need be.

You then need to calibrate it by opening the mister menu and pressing f10 on a keyboard. Best to do this on a bright background whilst in the core itself, like the white screen of the 240p test suite. Be careful because fixed hblank and vblank can cause issues, so turn those off if possible.

You calibrate it by shooting at the very edges of the screen. It should flash up which edge it wants you to shoot. Be very mindful of the position, if you go too far out it won't work. Basically try to get the value to the most extreme you can before it zeroes out.

Once you've done that, make sure the controller is set to guncon or justifier (depending on the game) and have fun. Be aware that the guncon 2 can have issues with darker games/scenes because it isn't clued in to the on screen flash like a guncon through snac is. An example where this is a problem is the end of area 2 of the second stage of time crisis. It's dark and shots simply won't register, unlike a guncon hooked up via snac which works as it should

pale sigil
#

Thank you for the thorough response - it works! I noticed that about the dark stages. As convenient as the GunCon 2 is, perhaps its worth having a GunCon 1 over SNAC for that reason.

You can get sinden working with mister, but it's a pain in the ass and doesn't work very well.

Tl;dr you use the guncon conversion. You'll need an RPi, an arduino micro for each gun you want to use and somrthingto draw a border. There's a pre configured image for the Pi and sketches for the arduinos. You then plug the guns into the Pi, wire up the arduinos to the correct GPIO pins on the Pi and then plug the arduinos into the mister. Then output the mister to something that can draw a border or use white leds around the border of your screen and it'll work like a guncon 2 except it doesn't feel great

Gun4IR works alot better and if you can find the parts to make one yourself, isn't too expensive (at least that was the case when I built it pre pandemic, not sure if the prices have gone nuts since then)

Just tested on my Mister, put Mister in pairing mode (hold middle OSD button for 5 seconds), push and hold red Wiimote button until 4 leds on the front of Wiimote start to blink, and it sync'd. I've never had a Wiimote sync'd with my MiSTer before.

Does anyone know if there is any way to fix Area 51 when using a guncon 3? That game's aiming doesn't match where the on-screen cursor is at all, making it unplayable with a guncon 3. Is it a problem with the core itself?

It's probably related to setting the cd speed faster in the core's OSD. I had that problem with some Konami games and once I set it back to the default setting, the games played perfect again.
