I once wanted to use a broken ps and make myself a snac , but overall I preferred a smaller size solution.
I was just too cheap to buy a snac with memslots
Was supposed to customize it for proper 7.5 v but got lazy
I may have complained about the jogcon bastard but it has an amazing dpad
Anybody else play the romhack of the resident evil ? The true directors cut ? I use to be able to play it but now when I try on the recent build and unstable, it just stays on the bios boot up
i will check
Thank ye
which version are you using?
The psx build ?
Oh right, original ost
Any idea on what could be different ?
I’ve tried rebooting. Turning fast boot on and off, all unsafe options off.
not sure, there were some cd related changes i think
have you got the plain dualshock version handy? the one this patch is based on
would be good to see if it still works
No just original ost but I can try and see
its the worst version, even i don't keep it around 😄
i bet kuba has it tho
true directors cut seems fine here
I run into a issue with the latest core with the game Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat (USA). The game displays a black screen after the second mission "Escort To Holst"
All default settings, I've tried two different redump's, one CHD and other BIN/CUE
Turbo and other common workarounds don't seem to work
Please share savestate
Thanks
yeah , confirmed
I can't find any workaround for the problem
@cinder aspen please create issue on github
crashes after reading data , maybe CD issue
one sec.
yes, works fine v.04
Resident Evil - True Director's Cut (Original OST) v0.4
everything works ok in this game
dualsdram 20230330 and latest stable core 0503
Okay I’ll try that now and see
Nope. Still black. I dunno what it is. I didn’t alter the file and had played it many times before just fine. Game is also running fine in duckstation
check from another source
I'm having some similar problems, with unverified good dumps that used to boot and now don't (castlevania single bin and tales of destiny 2 single bin were the ones I know offhand)
both were from dumped from personal copies, likely using imgburn or dvd decryptor, can't really remember
single bin/single track stuff that I dumped seems to work fine
there were some changes to single-merged-bin lately
there was a fix for pregap that got merged last week. previously there was some changes to single bin/multi track that fixed some things, but the pregap issue snuck in with that
@ivory verge @abstract drift I FINALLY FIXED IT! Thank you for helping. Sorry to waste your time over dumb stuff but I was in confusion
My cue file was off by 1 space
ah
@iron nova CHD is the way
Are there any non chd titles?
Have six of those PSone consoles and all lasers died. ☹️
@hot marsh CHD is just a format that is a compressed bin/cue into a single CHD file. Think like a ZIP or RAR file.

RetroPie Project Documentation
yup, just wondering if for some reason there's an incompatibility
I mean, I had 2 ps1s and they both died of different causes on normal use, probably the only reason why I haven't bought one and setup xstation (if I didn't know MiSTer existed)
I'm very thankful for the core, wonder sometime what I should do with my 400+ physical PSX Games.
I'll take all 😛
I bet you do. 😂
no problem, you don't have to worry about anything anymore haha
nah
keep the games 🙂
Hahaha, yeah it's just to nostalgic. Love to check them out from time to time, but it's a lot less then before MiSTer.
even for sentiment if not their value
Never started collecting for the money, I only buy games that gave sentimental value. 😊
tbh I've sold every PS1 title I owned just a few weeks ago thanks to mister. Not looking back
I should be thankful to people who'd still buy some of my games for a high price somehow
for it makes your realize the average person doesn't even know about ODEs, and even less about FPGAs and mister project. And even when they know, they don't make the jump. By experience that's what I always see, even among retro enthousiasts
I do not collect games, I have some , but only games that have special sentimental value for me
I'm mostly only keeping pokemon games now
I like more "all in one" solution, so MiSTer is perfect 🙂
I collect games, MiSTer kinda killed that for me lol
well, kill the mister 😛
I’ve got close to 450 PS1 games
I’m basically tapped out, outside of a few expensive games
It's kind of insane that 450 PS1 games isn't even close to the amount of PS1 games that were officially released.
@serene nebula, name 5 games you wish you could get
it's... it's just five copies of bubsy 3d
Sure
- Remote Control Dandy
- Valkyrie Profile
- Vanark
- Silent Bomber
- Speed Power Gunbike (to get signed by my friend who’s owner of IntiCreates)
4 more copies to go
It doesn’t get much better than this:
the game is pricey for being horrible lol
Here’s, I think the only PS1 game with a purple label
It would be cool if you could connect a usb cd writer and boot real cds on MiSTer 🙂
it's not that easy 🙂
Oh man, I love Remote Control Dandy, and most games from Sandlot too. EDF! EDF! EDF!
Do you have Chicken Run?
Nah, should I?
Not really, it is just a game that I like. Also there is a Dreamcast version.
Ray Tracers is great too.
Yeah I’ve got that one, real fun!
Like a modern chase hq
When I can just get the tambourine for cheap
probably japan
it's hella expensive on ebay
I just hope it's not just a box
I literally bought this variant " - The machine is empty, no game disk provided."
I'm assuming it's missing the game only since the price diff was like $4 only
do you have any of the fishing controllers? Worth it?
they’re ok, they work surprisingly well
would you recommend them?
Thinking of just buying 4 more controllers and calling it quits
I have some third party one that’s a little wonky with the modes but once you figure out what mode to put it in, works great
I mean if you like fishing games. There’s a couple of decent ones.
mostly because no other stores are selling new controllers lately
I mean, I liked the one in breath of fire 3 lol
the sega dreamcast ones were okay
despite the wonky analog mine had (it's not physically centereD)
I’d say go for it if you can get it for cheap and you should be able to, nobody clamoring for fishing on PS1 lol. There’s quite a few fishing games though, surprisingly.
Yeah, I think I'll end up getting that stupid conductor tact controller
since there's like 4 games for it
at least I won't feel bad for it unlike the tambourine that only works with 1 game
aww store that sold the tambourine cancelled the order, it was apparently out of stock
sadly had to buy the more expensive, unused, but complete one from ebay
it will probably take 3 months for me to get it
There was a full boxed tambourine + game set at my local hard off a month or 2 ago, for about $5
Problem is I don't have a lot of space for limited use peripherals
Wow. Wish i saw it i stead of the $6 controller with $60 shipping
There's also a boxed Saturn twin stick for $30 I've been ignoring for the last few months
yeah I've seen one of those at a hard off nearish to me, though the box looks a little rough
I actually prefer when they don't keep stuff shrink-wrapped in its box
I'd prefer to see the condition
At least with consoles they'll put the box lid underneath before wrapping
yeah I prefer buying loose, mostly just because boxes are wasted on me.
You would probably want a twin stick boxed though.
Unless you are Really Really Big Man.
I'm looking into alternative ways to make a Samba de Amigo controller. Love the game but my maracas are dead. If I can make another one, it might be possible to convert it into this ps1 device too.
A Samba set is actually one thing I do want eventually, my kids would get a kick out of it (using Wiimotes just doesn't seem the same)
Geez. I was expecting nonsense but uk eBay sellers are asking near £400. Japan stays stable at £130 free postage.
I did a proof of concept version of Samba de Amigo VR. It feels great to play using vr controllers. Need to finish this project.
The original maracas (and probably the ps1 tambourines) are interesting. It uses ultrasound to know it's position. On the dreamcast each maraca reports X and Y just like an analog stick.
I've also mapped the vr controllers to output as a dual analog stick and been able to play on dreamcast emulator. This is another thing that I might explore in the future. Might be also possible to use ps3 move controllers and camera for this. So many options 🙂
Pretty cool
Could you get that to work with a real DC?
Oooh
It might be possible with the ps3 move controller. The vr controller (I use the Quest2) requires the headset too. I's tracked by the position of the headset.
@deft sphinx you got this in your updater script yet?
Anyone else having trouble with analog input? My f310 won't use the sticks anymore in xinput mode. Think it's on the linux/backend side.
I will say the digital buttons are working way better though. There was some button issue before that made tony hawk tricks not hit right.
Sorry, what have I missed?
Weebs
I'm so sorry, I'm not sorry at all.
It's the Buck Bumble theme for 10 hours. You're welcome.

Is there a chance we can have guitar freaks as a controller?
It's kind of a mess using other guitar controllers with it
Due to them lacking buttons and conflicting button assignments
Although only 1 game will benefit (technically 2)
You mean as a controller option in the core? The Guitar Freaks controller works perfectly though SNAX.
I was looking into how the densha de go controller works on ps1. It's a puzzle mess!
https://marcriera.github.io/ddgo-controller-docs/controllers/classic/tech/
It does but how about for other people that have only guitar hero controllers. It is a horrible experience due to keymapping problems
Strangely it can be used on switch via adapter
any ps1 to switch adapter? or custom one?
as I see, the adapter must understand how the ps1 device encodes the info
the official switch controller (ZKNS-001) outputs the power and brake handles as analog stick.
On Composite through Direct Video, is resolution switching (psx games) seamless using this Rankie HDMI to VGA adapter https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-HDMI-Adapter-3-5mm-Audio/dp/B00ZMV7RL2 connected to the Mister Addons YC Active board?
Also, how is the quality of the audio out from this?
lol you have the opposite problem I do. I want a Guitar Hero controller but only have Guitar Freaks. 😢
gotta find my ipad power cable so i can run update all lol
Aren't they common?
Maybe I dunno, I should really check
the only harder to find ones are the live ones (at a good prince) since iOS version is trash and most people have lost the dongles
but not as bad as wavebird gc controllers
Even without the dongle, it can be modded using ardwiino. Actually, most of the GH and RB devices can be directly wired to an ardwiino device.
yeah that's the probable best option for low lag
at least dtxmania has lag adjustment
albeit manual.
if I didn't get my guitars relatively cheap, I probably would have done that wired mod
at least I get to use it on Wii U's revived guitar hero servers
Full playthrough of Korokoro Post Nin on the PS1 core, using a JogCon for control:
https://youtu.be/cBvUfjvNgQg
PLEASE WATCH IN HIGHEST QUALITY 1440p! Use chapters to skip excessive dialogue! I've been experimenting with a lot of different game types with the Namco JogCon while testing the upcoming "Reflex Adapt" board from MiSTerAddons. 'Stage rotation' games like this are a perfect fit for JogCon & feel far more natural than just pressing buttons...
The game doesnt support JogCon natively- I'm testing out a work-in-progress USB adapter board from MiSTer Addons & sonik called "Reflex Adapt" that gives the game perfect controls when using a JogCon.
Same for me. Its so good with how the cores work, I have stopped buying games.
I have got a few hundred PS1 games and also a lot of Demo Discs including some of the less common ones.
I just collect controllers for ps1
I do both 😭
Maestromusic any good?
I never even heard of that game until now LOL. You’re on another level than me.
A review of "The Maestromusic" for the Playstation 1. The game itself is not over the top but conveys a very interesting idea for a video game. Enjoy!
Wild
Yes. I'm poor lol
this looks horrificly unfun
Yeah up and down waggle
Might as well do wii music
Surprisingly there's like 4 games
The Mad Maestro controller uses the negcon protocol. Should be usable with most usb adapters :p
good GOD my brain couldn't take those character noises for more than thirty sec.... twenty five seconds.
jesus. lål.
25 seconds or 25 years??
Wonder if it works with a wiimote's waggle
25 seconds
Hahaha, how ya doin BasketSnake?
Trolling 🙃
no i'm not. that's an insanely annoying noise coming from the character in the game
Couldnt be any worse than the insanely annoying noise coming out of your mouth. Begone, long one
Yeah, stuff something long and hard in there
Yeah can confirm, they squeak like birds every two seconds
It’s an alright game when you mute it. The music and sound effects are both uniquely terrible in their own ways.
Chill dude, wtf!
😁

Japanese one had a different OST from the Saturn and western releases. The Japanese version had voices for some reason on some tracks and it was not as good. Weirdly, the first game is english only for the ending
I fucking hated how cheap the 2nd to the last boss was. Meanwhile the last boss is a joke

I forgot about how they tried to localize Gunbird for PS1
as Mobile Light Force with an unrelated cover
then they did it again with Castle of Shikigami as Mobile Light Force 2 for PS2
with literally the same cover with a 2 slapped on
Lol interesting, didn’t know that
I have castle of Shikigami 2 but didn’t know about 1
Just found about the Namco System 12 version of Un Jammer Lammy
https://youtu.be/60Yint14Hs0
It has content not found in the PS1 release.
we parappa fans eatin good this week
it's only been a day since the last video and we already have more footage of the arcade cabinet in action lol

Hope someone soon makes a core for the System 11 and 12, for Tekken Tag and Soul Calibur.
I just got two brand new 128 mb sd ram (rev 3.0 but that shouldnt matter)
and no glitches in game 🙂
How are they going with saturn core?
Nice I guess, I've done a full one-credit playthrough of time gal on saturn core
But not sure what "edge case" games are on saturn core
I only get white screen on Sega Rally 😔
It will probably start working with the next core, then stop again 🙂
If i can read japanese, which version of Grandia should I play: PS1 or Saturn?
PS1 just to make the Saturn fans angry
“Bu bu bu bu it’s better! The graphics look 3% more accurate!”
It’s the same game. PS1 core works now and you can save progress.
if you can read Japanese then don't play games and just sit here lording it over everyone that you don't need translation patches
I might be misremembering, but isn't the PS1 version more prone to slowdown?
Well you know, versions of console games localized to my native language hardly exist.
For better or worse, we get on by playing games only in English or Japanese.
Well dang good on you for being (at least) trilingual. I was just trolling with that comment haha 🍻
Quad. National language is different from regional language.
I guess these are third world things 💅
🙇♂️
I'm still struggling with the bilingual thing and it makes my head spin. Respect
Im trilingual too and I can’t force myself to forget French
Sure glad I learned that language, it’s been absolutely useless for me lol
English / Dutch / German and probably my dialect can be seen as a another language since part of the Netherlands might not be able to understand me if I use it 😄
I know 5 languages among which French and English but the only one worth mentioning is Japanese
Anyone know if duckstation have a official discord server?
I want to collaborate on the project but there's no way to contact it's author. The github repo does not accept issue report. Only way is to send a PR.
Yes it has
But i think it's not easy to enter at this time?
I've found a link on a tweet but it does not work anymore
There's been some drama, but a lot of it are harrasers and Android users that are against him.
Ask Robert though as he has contacted him the past months. I'm just merely a discord kid.
I managed to forget my French, was pretty good with it in highschool and never used it since, so I leave that off my language list
@serene nebula , martial beat controller worth it?
oh nevermind the controller is missing the action parts.
Yes it is .. but I wonder how it runs on the psx2x core ..
so is it possible to have a 3x core?
I kind of hope some games would bug out like tales of symphonia on 60fps
for reference:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QPBSeIvJt8
@hot marsh use duckstation
Woah, now with 2000 percent more bowing.
Stenzek is in the psx.dev discord: https://discord.com/invite/psx-dev-642647820683444236
i only ever contact him once to talk about some issues in duckstation i could resolve, but i think he fixed all of them in a different way in the end 🙂
With regards to SNAC, no controller really requires true 7.5V right?
JogCon can be weak with low voltage. But "does not requires" 7.5v.
Got in touch. Thanks!
Early model memcard pros need it, but we have virtual memcards with snac now.
Also not a controller 🙂
what exactly do you mean? the level of detail effect or the sawtooth?
would be great if you have some static situation with savestate, then i can check how those lines are even drawn
it looks like polygons, because psx lines cannot have thickness
it's also in the youtube video, but seems more hidden. It this the same camera perspective?
almost looks like they're the wrong color in the distance
Let’s all remember the day that PlayStation was born. It came screaming in, victorious in battle from the moment of conception.

Finally the PS1 + LSD combo you’ve been waiting for
That's trippy
$125 for both is a good deal in today’s market
I remember playing Megaman X5 on that
I’m sorry for your loss
It was fine. I always recommend playing X5 and X6 with the improvement patch overhauls these days
Im sorry for your Stockholm syndrome
They were definitely lower budget than X4
No anime opening or cutscenes
Im guessing Rockman 8 wasnt the big seller Capcom was hoping for since 9 didnt happen for a long time after
X3 has a PSX/Saturn/PC port with arranged music and anime cutscenes
That’s cool. Is it in Japanese?
Yes, though oddly Europe got an English release. I believe it is NTSC/60hz patchable though so nbd
Of course the PC version is not 50hz so it doesnt matter there
Personally I prefer the MSU-1 version with MET's arrangements
7 and 8 really stand out as the odd ones in the franchise. Although I like them more as time goes on.
Im pretty fond of them
I like the Saturn version of 8
It has extra boss battles with Cutman and Woodman (Rock/Paper/Scissors), and a better stage theme for Tengu Man
Saturn Tengu Man is definitely better than PS1
Also okay I feel stupid for not getting the joke there with cutman and woodman lol that's pretty good
hehe
I do wish x5 didnt have those slow forced scrolling stages
It has my fave flying armor
The extent that you can patch/improve X5 and X6 is really down to ridiculously fine details now. They have their own gui with multiple tabs to customize every aspect
Yeah havent tried v2 at least alia is muted and no need for 2 replays
Is there a way to map a button to enable/disable cheats???
no, you have to go to OSD (or compile yourself a special version)
I played Castlevania SOTN Yesterday and at the first boss when Dracula transform my character Richter was not responding anymore. I did a savestate and reboot and when i reload the character was not responding to any command. Does someone already experiment this?
Was your controller wired or wireless?
wired ps5.
Very cool. Ive never done FPGA dev but may have to try that out
@serene nebula hm. run it again.
Yes sir, doing another five speed runs right now!
I am already finishing my tenth speedrun
which one if you can I get to just do a video chat with me while I play the game and be like "hey go over there"
I could stream it and you could yell at me
I can do that, but I won’t remember what to do, I’ll just be yelling random directions and sound cocksure about it
I absolutely loathe this stage for this.
The music is still good tho 👀
Got bored, made this instead of going to bed. Enjoy!
it's actually very easy, you only need to modify 2 lines. There is a line that switches on cheats on with status[6] from OSD. If you don't need the pause button, you could use that and exchange the status[6] with button_paused and remove the button pause from the pause condition
or for a full solution add a new button to button mapping and copy the pause button toggle behavior
I got the maestromusic controller... Both the game and controller are awful as expected.
Boring gameplay, controller is inconsistent in detection
Surprised it has 4 games
Ascii fishing, i need to grease the thing. Game is not great
Play the Reel Fishing games by Natsume.
I mean, it won’t win you over in the slightest. But if you have a fishing controller it’s entertaining for 5 minutes.

Hey guys. Requesting some unusual cheats help .
I'm ultra-excited to try PSX 2x core I found on github.
Gran Turismo 2 can run at 60 FPS when CPU is overclocked, but you have to enable a certain cheat. And I discover just now that Mister's not compatible with Gameshark codes and uses its own format, .gg.
I have this code, it does work on Duckstations.
Does someone know how to convert that code to a .gg file?..
E01D5864 0002
301D5864 0001
A401F888 AEB40008
The original cheats package is SCUS-94488.zip.
I find the reason. I pressed the button to Switch to analog mode so that's why the character was not responding anymore
@serene nebula i say RUN IT AGAIN
Sir yes sir
At gamehacking.org you can select and convert the code to the mister, see if there isn't already that code there that you can use, usually the RAW format works best
Thanks, but I didn't find any working converter. One form I saw didn't spit out anything. Would be awesome if you guided me somewhere.
Yeah, I've checked, this code isn't there.
Is a converter

i once told how this could be done: #1052672192900501534 message
the only thing that makes it more difficult here is that it's 3 codes in a row, not a single one
also the last code looks strange, this is not a valid address in psx
but i'm not sure why it's even there. The cheats list linked only has the first 2 lines
but from what it looks, i see no reason why it doesn't only need line 2. I mean, it writes to the same address, what is even the use of that? the cpu will never see the first write
Great vid
lots of games to play on the Mister.
just a few
Check out dudes channel, specially his “what happun?” Series
Ima be playing some Gamera tonight !
Gamera 2000 is great game!
The stage in the forest reminds me very much of Panzer Dragoon
As soon as plant some tomatoes and onions im diving in to some space turtle action!
I wonder how it plays on the psx2x core !

so I'd need to see how the port handles the refresh rate when porting it to mainstream consoles
Likely to be 60fps locked.
That would be not good unfortunately
Game becomes slower and thus easier to play than arcade
If it's 60 hz but runs at 61.XX fps internally
I could see it working
then you deal with tearing
Up to the devs to have a VRR mode, but I doubt it. Most people hardly notice these kind of things. Unless the person is sensitive to it.
Makes me laugh at "the eye can't even perceive more than 60fps" by IGN Professionals, back then.
To have multiple options is always better, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it.
to have a vrr mode they'd have to make a ps5 specific version and I don't think they've ever done that
Talking about ports, are the cave shooters any good on PS4/PS5? Heard the switch versions aren't great.
the M2 ones are good, I dunno about the DS/DS2 ps4 port as I never played it
and the livewire ones I dont' think got ported to anything but the switch?
Missed these... will dig a bit to see how they perform, thanks.
TGM2 is probably gonna be locked at 60, Hamster doesn't do anything special with that sort of thing iirc
Just learned about a Japan-exclusive PS1 fishing game called Killer Bass that features a cutscene where a fish EATS A BABY
Can’t be mad at the bass, that’s just bad parenting
Twin Fisher: Revenge Joe's Baby
technically that one isn't japan only, but that cutscene was removed from the US version. As well as some other light censorship. Pretty out there fishing game though
nice
Yeah it's called monster bass in the us I believe
Dubya was wrong, the human being and fish can't coexist peacefully
Coexist peacefully in each other's bellies
anyone own the mini mono tambourines? Does it need 7.5v? the detection is pretty bad at the heights it's supposed to support
Oh I don't have one. I do have the Samba Maracas.
I will probably try to give it 7.5v
Although i hate the idea of an external adapter
I probably will just use a ps1 adapter and i guess chop off tge connected part and wire it to the ps1's controller port
It have any rumble motor? I can't imagine it using 7.5v if not having motors
It does albeit weak. The detection on the tambourine is pretty bad
Like it goes below shoulder level
While game supports up to 190cm height
Anyway, ordered the ps1 adapter, will solder the stuff and test using the vita adapter
Although its output is 5v only
So it might require more voltage then
Would be cool to see what the device reports but I don't know of any homebrew to query the device and show the report.
I did this on the Reflex/arduino. If you ever get one, let me know.
Sure.
Devices with rumble must report the amperage required
Hopefully i have scrapped all the sugru out
Maybe it will fix the stupid maestro music controller too
The detection on it is bad
I cant imagine the controller being bad since it has 4 games
Anyone else tested those devices besides you?
Probably not
I have one device that does not work at all on mister. But it's a third party cheap controller
Using generic chinese snac placed inside a psone
First party/licensed ones should work
Only iffy so far are maestromusic and tambourine
I just hope martial beat works
But all those are licensed
Have not tried unlicensed yet
No console to test? Real ps1 or fat ps2?
Ps2 has dead cd reader
Opl to the rescue!
It's a fat console?
Yup
Yeah, reason why i got a mister
Because i thought guncons would work on ps1 there via opl
Even mister is not 100%... sadly 😦
Anyway, will do 7.5v mod first
I still need to pick up a real ps1
Too lazy to recap them and get xstation
Maybe if i do it on xbox, i will get the nerve fir it
XD
Since that's probably the first to go
At least the one i got was suspiciously pristine for a v1. Removed clock cap
Although i could replace whatever on ps2 to get burned cds to work
Nice
Could it be bad modchip or bad laser?
I have some xboxes. Removed the caps already
Ps2 lasers are common to die. Probably due to burned media usage :/
I finished my stupid addition to ny psone mod. Added 7.5v adapter support.
Still waiting for my psone adapter. Tested it with vita tv adapter (5v 2a) and rumbled worked only when it is powered but still weak
Hope it fixes my tambourine problem
unless you own xstation/ps1digital, you're a pleb
I was about to until MiSTer
lol
had just purchased a SCART cable from Retro-Access with lightgun split-out too xD
This one is a hollowed out psone. It's literally a giant snac with better rumble and hopefully controller support
Bought a mister because pops loader didnt work with guncon 1
Too lazy to add 7.5v support on my other hollowed out ps1
you're hollowed out
Yup dead on the inside

This is so cool looking.
I’m getting some weird behaviour on Parappa The Rapper where the game kind of loops around and doesn’t show a menu that I’m expecting to see…
When playing in easy mode, after the end of the third stage, there should be a menu that shows up saying it’s the end of easy mode (see: https://youtu.be/sCu-RKziP6U). When I play using the most recent version of the core, it plays the FMV at the end of the level, and then immediately starts playing the FMV at the beginning of the game - which, if you don’t know that easy mode ends at level 3 (like I didn’t), gives the impression that the game has restarted.
Pretty minor, but I wanted to flag it as it might be a bug.
Does this core support the feature of games like ridge racer where you can put a CD in the ps1 after the game has loaded into the ram so you can play any music you want?
I do believe so but I haven’t tried it myself ..
Raise this as an issue on the GitHub. I am sure Robert will be happy to take a look if he can.
1 thing that would help is a Save State just before the issue usually happens.
yes, just exchange the CD to a pure audio CD like with a real console. If the core does reset when you do it, your cue file is wrong and it's not a pure audio CD image
@mortal oracle the japanese Parappa also has some issues with FMVs i could never solve, but i thought US was ok? Maybe some regression or nobody tried the easy mode yet?
US version for me, so that might be why
Have anyone tried Community Pom with the English translation patch on the core?
Oh, Parappa JP still has the bug?
even worse, still has the chicken 😅
yes, it's on github. You must hear the music of the intro FMV (while watching a white screen), otherwise you cannot play. No idea if the game can be played otherwise later
i never found what the issue is. Rama had some hint, but that doesn't apply to CD emulation in the core. But it's very likely a CD bug anyway
It boots
Huh, I havent heard of this one. Looks good
I read "Community Porn"
I mean... didnt we all?
I never played Community Pom despite liking the stuff developed by Fill-a-Cafe.
It’s a M! It’s a M!!!!
There’s a joke in there somewhere lol
Meanwhile there's a PS1 game called Universal Nuts.
Japanese-only, sadly
Woah cool, thanks for sharing!
use it with your dual analogs
Universal Nuts is a sci-fi visual novel featuring two protagonists, Yui and Ai, which get involved in an incident onboard a space station. As the story progresses, the mystery of events that have occurred start to unfold. The game plays in a typical visual novel style by reading through on-screen text and dialogues to progress the story. Character icons are present during dialogues beside the character art over the background image, and the game features both animated cut-scenes and voice-acting.
seems like it could be fun

I guess it came out for saturn as well
Saturn? Not even once.
2D is what I played as a kid, heh
3D is for adults
brain can’t handle 3dimensions? heh
Twisted Metal time
When I run the US Version in Beetle PSX HW RetroArch Core, it behaves the same as the MiSTer Core Does. Finish Stage 3, see FMV of the New Car and then it goes back to the intro FMV again. Is this not normal?
I can answer my own question but will need to get my Real Hardware back out of storage...
Even with a Burned Disc on my SCPH-1000 Console, it behaves the same as the Core so not a bug.
I am still very happy to test reported "Bugs" to see if they are real or not.
However I think I may have found another bug.
In Die Hard Triloy Die Hard 2 (on rails shooter), Explosion effects make the screen turn Black!
For example if you pick up the Explosive Shotgun, everytime you fire a shot the screen turns Black!
Latest unstable version of the core tested. Will go back to the last Stable Release and try it there.
you can turn off the black frame in the OSD
I didn't know that 🙂 that is cool
it's a hack because the image will be messed up when the resolution changed when it goes through the scaler
Got you, didn't see that option "Black Transitions" got it now.
some gun games used a resolution change to indicate that you shoot 😅
Oh good 🙂 hahaha that is a new one on me.
Change resolution when a shot is taken, I imagine some CRT's may have flickered when this happened.
it's a trick, they store e.g. a full white image in the vram and when you shoot, switch to that image for 1 frame. Because it's fully white, the rsolution doesn't matter, so they store the white image in the lowest possible resolution, while the game runs at higher res
on a crt, this would be flawless (should be also with the core)
basically this issue: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer/issues/196
and thanks a lot for verifying with a real disc!
More than happy to keep testing and debunking bug reports 😉
Should 24 bit be on or not by default?
Read 24 bit solves timing issues but sometimes causes it
Good question indeed
If you want to turn off dithering then I’d recommend it.
I forget, too bright or too dark?
bonus “cheat” lol
Ofc this have no sense on lcd. Gun games on crt is based where gun sensor and pixel are matched on screen. For this, brighter images or white images instead helps to this detection
Imagine playing Ape Escape by rubbing on Lara's control stick nipples
well, you could get up to about 3% more brightness that was otherwise cut off (bits lost). It is a difference in Silent Hill for sure
(personally i prefer the better contrast, but i don't play horror games)
you can correct it with gamma iirc
the problem is silent hill is it raises the black level, making sections that should be pitch black a grey instead, probably less noticeable in other genres
i think its gamma 120 to correct it
Turning off dithering in silent hill also makes the fog significantly worse
I'm an average dithering enjoyer so I actually prefer the imperfections.
Yeah same. I run the core with filters and the dithering looks nice.
One of the neat things about duckstation is that it has an option for "scaled dithering" to match your resolution
makes it look way better if youre running the game at highter resolutions
team dither here also. only game i've found i prefer shutting it off is Prism Land story
Probably going to get an active adapter to clean up the SVHS signal from my MiSTer, the straight cable method works but it's pretty bad looking on my capture device.
Im guessing the 24 bit dither for VGA helps with the FMVs looking worse over an Analog I/O?
I had dithering turned off by default for games like Harmful Park and Castlevania Chronicles, does the VGA option only affect the analog output?
Oh okay, Im RTFM-ing on this and it looks like it causes issues with HDMI if enabled
For a longest time, Dithering wasn't correct on EPSXE.
I still use epsxe lol mostly because low end portable device + PEC
You’re too focused on digitizing video, MiSTer doesn’t support SVHS (but it can output S-Video) 😛
I think Im being trolled
Good
Have a commercial for your efforts
You PAL gents should know that SVHS/S-Video are interchangable terms since the format first appeared on SVHS decks
Y/C was used before this but not outside of computers
Why?
I have a Sony SVO-1500
has served me well for all this ripping
Yadif 2X
All you nerds ever rip are rancid Cheeto farts!
Potential bug? Playing Klonoa when you save on memory card then overwrite a save, the overwritten save disappears when you reset the core. Has anyone experienced that?
did you save the memory card in OSD?
You have to activate the OSD, it will say "Saving" next to the Memory Card item. Wait until it saves it before you quit the game / load a different one or it will NOT write your Memory Card
@bright yacht, the tambourine really needs 7.5v. my modded snac with ps1 adapter makes the game playable now
I will try maestromagic if it fixes the wand
Tried it. Controller works much better
Still a boring game
Amazing!
sorry - not sure how to do that. Interestig thing is that the original saves are on the mem card but the overwrites are not. So say I create a new save called SAVE A, then overwrite it with a new save (SAVE B). While the system is on I see SAVE B in the mem card, but when I turn it off and then on SAVE B has disappeared and I only see SAVE A
in OSD, there is a option for save memcard
this can be either autosave or manual
when it's set to manual, you have to save using the "Save memory cards option", if it's autosave, you only have to open the OSD
the "Memcard Status" will tell you if the memcard is saved back to sdcard or not
usually you just set it to auto and open the OSD before turning mister off
if you have network connection you could take a look if the memcard on sdcard has changed after saving ingame
Sorry if that sounds harsh, but i currently still assume it's a user bug 🙂 maybe there is some issue with saves, but i would be surprised no one else reported that before in the last year or so since it was last changed. I also completed Klonoa in multiple session and didn't encounter it
Save works fine here too
Is there a way to unmount a memory card slot, to make the slot empty?
only a monster needs this option
I will check when I'm back home - my point was that the system saves to mem card, but doesn't overwrite saves.
It does. You need to open the OSD to trigger the mister to actually save the new data to the mem card
I see. It's just weird that you don't have to open OSD for the first save but need to open OSD for the save overwrite?
Closest is via snac and actually not putting a memory card there. Although is there any real reason to do that other than speeding up memory card utilities like on Wild Arms
most likely you opened the OSD after your first save and just didn't think about it
this happens to basically every mister user
once
Hi. I need this option. Not being able to return to a "no memory card inserted" state is not very good. It is like not having a unmount image button on Daemon tools. I once had to load the card that loads when the core boots without disc to transfer a game save, when a game was loaded. Now when I go to the memory card screen before loading a game, the same card loads on both slots.
I checked and it was set to 'save upon opening OSD'. I changed it to Manual. I tried to overwrite the old save. Same issue. The save was not overwritten. Let me ask this differently - what should the set up be to use the mem cards as intended by the original HW?
did you wait until the game finish saving to memory card before opening the menu?
if you still encounter the issue, please: create a memcard with a save(you should have one) and create a savestate when the game asks for saving and upload both. Then we can try to replicate by loading the savestate and saving to memcard
yes, disable automount and open the memcard select screen. Then either press "back" long or backspace on keyboard
i know, it's not very obvious, but it's the standard procedure to unmount any disk drive on mister
Get into the habit of once a game has finished saving to open the OSD to actually write it to the memory card.
just a note why this tedious procedure of opening the OSD to really save the memcard is even required: when the memcard is saved to sdcard, the Host system (HPS/Linux) is busy with writing back the memcard and cannot supply CD data anymore. This can lead to game crashes for some games, so the game must pause. As i didn't want the game to pause out of a sudden, this is done when the OSD is opened, which should always pause, unless this OSD-Pause is deactivated, which the core tells you is not recommended.
to help with understanding it, i added a indicator if the memcard was already saved back in OSD that acts very much like the LED on mister that would also signal that a pending change has not been written to sdcard yet
Anyone else guilty of having the OSD pause off?
Can anyone tell what external storage file system format will eliminate stuttering?
I'm using and External HDD formatted as Exfat and I experience stuttering.
From backreading, someone had no stuttering when using an External SSD with NTFS.
For external drives you definitely need a good power supply too
I'm using a 2.5" one
biggest issue is the USB connection. I can only really recommend network drive or SDCard. Maybe someone has a good setup with external HDD, but so far i only heard of problems. But maybe the ones where it's working well just don't post
Usually external HDDs are set to park its heads after a set time, it took several seconds for it to unpark the upon a read/write request. One that I used even had a tool that allowed to change this timer.
I love how many different storage solutions we have on MiSTer but since I curate my entire collection I can’t fathom needing more than 512GB. That’s using CHD in literally hundreds upon hundreds of disc games.
So an A2 rated SD card is perfect for me!
Network FTW. I just wish the mister networking setup was a tad more dynamic. It works but I had to adjust a bunch of stuff on my NAS due to having complete verified sets setup for scanning/verifying. It didn't like my folder layout and structure so I just created more shares on the NAS and move over the games I want. Doubles my data footprint but it works super, super well. Way faster from network than SD card.
Highly recommend network loading to everyone.
i use a sandisk 512gb card too
I use a 4TB spinning disk in an sata -> usb adapter
It's an expensive loophole, but if you want you could get MisterAddons's SNAX with a PlayStation adapter, an original multitap, and an actual, physical memory card. You don't have to worry about opening the OSD to save there, but then you will have to worry about using controllers meant for an actual PS1. Otherwise, just get in the habit of opening the OSD to commit a save. This has to be done with other consoles, too, so not a bad habit contract.
I’ve noticed occasional hitches in ps1 core I assumed were loading related but never worried.
Is the "SPU RAM Select" Option supposed to be selectable if I have dual SDRAM on the latest stable release, or do I have to download a special DUAL SDRAM build?
Thank you.
Will use an SD card then
Is an A1 rated Sandisk good enough?
if you turn on the cd-overlay you'll get a popup whenever the hitch is related to storage
the most noticable ones for me are if BT device that was connected falls asleep
No. A2. Always A2
has anyone put together a music disc and used it in the PSX Core bios?
I've seen a few folks do it on twitter
did they post the process? I figure it's straight forward if you use something like imgburn and create a cd audio file.
I think, if I recall correctly. You have to convert the CD to Bin/Cue
I see. Gonna look more into it when I get home.
Should be easy to rip an Audio CD using IMGBurn and select Bin/Cue as the format.
I imagine that will work.
How do I use ulaunchelf on PS2 to transfer saves to MISTer?
One way is to transfer them onto a usb storage device
and from there it should be pretty self explanatory
well it doesn't have an extension on the file
so are the saves on a ps1 memory card?
the latest version of ulaunchelf should be able to read ps1 memory cards
ok, PSXGameEdit worked for me
Why would you need A2 on the Mister? Afaik A2 is just better if you need to access many files on the SD card at once, which is not done by the mister. I never had any performance problems with my A1 card.
the sdcard slot on the de10-nano is very slow as it is, I'd wager high speed rating on the cards don't matter too much
If you are moving 512GB/1TB worth of games onto a card via PC (or backing up from card to PC), the faster speed is nice.
In my experience A1 corrupts way more easier than A2
I was able to create an audio CD image and use it with Ridge Racer and in the BIOS.
What games stutter usually on USB so I can test if I need to move my stuff
With regards to this, you're still limited to havign it in the same folder right? Like for games that have change discs like Beat Mania and FF games
I get some stutters in Crash Team Racing
Okay, ordered an A2.
According to this page: https://vampier.net/PSX/
"When switching to an audio disc image the PSX core will not reset itself. This is handy when there is a need to switch to your own audio CD like with Vib Ribbon or any other game/visualizer that can play audio CDs."
yes, if the disc is detected as audio disc, which is basically a check if track 1 is a data track or a audio track, then it will not reset your game
easiest way to create yourself a audio disc and test it: take any game that uses CD DA (multi track) and replace track 1 in the cue with any of the other tracks. That's how i tested all these things 😅
Plus, you can create a yourself a audio disc with game music you like. Unfortunatly it doesn't work with CD XA or SPU based games, otherwise i could play ridge racer while hearing Balamb garden
Aww, I guess it can't be used with Battle Area Toshinden's CDDA tracks
Although I probably would never play the games that support audio cd
Fun video. Does a good job covering a few esoteric 3D fighting games but there’s a whole lot more out there. Check out these additional recommendations if you enjoyed the video:
- Destrega
- Dynasty Warriors
- Ehrgeiz
- Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle
- Goiken Muyou II
- Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft
- Kamen Rider V3
- Psychic Force 2
- Shaolin
- Vs.
- War Gods
- Wu Tang: Shaolin Style
- X-Men Mutant Academy 2
There’s more out there but I didn’t want to fill my list with the bottom of the barrel lol.
Although many 3D fighting games came out during the 32-bit years, a lot of them have now fallen by the wayside -- this video hopes to dig up some obscure memories, whether it's a Jurassic Park based fighter, a Tekken rip-off, or something that's just plain bad. Enjoy!

Konami was really lazy with Kensei sacred fist
like unoriginal characters, concepts, name
They also made so many clone characters
Mutant Academy 2 is really good
The combo system in that game is pretty nice
Was the original Dynasty Warriors a fighter game? I know the series from the hack and slash games on PS2
yup
it vaguely reminds me of soul edge
Only PS1 game I own a physical copy of
Afaik Wu Tang shaolin style is based on the canceled Thrill Kill game that was crazy brutal for its time. The leaked prototype runs well on the core.
Yeah, it’s a better game than Thrill Kill but it’s still pretty chaotic. It’s still a fun game though, and even supports the multi tap for four players.
So lets play Thrill Kill of thre thrill and Wu Tang Shaolin Style for the Gameplay and the Music 👌
Scored a $12 jogcon
I guess that thai ebay seller fucking up my $50 order was good in the end
Yeah. Like that game i saw weeks ago
Bet my bastard controller works better
Literal mix of jogcon and negcon
Well better than the tambourine with only 1 game
Jogcon + arduino + mister = endless possibilities!
I mean paddle controller for atari?
yep
with proper stoppers on the edges from the jogcon's force feedback and everything 🙂
speaking of which..
haha thats exactly what im testing now 😁
not micro machines exactly, but that style of game
i dont think adding force feedback to games that did not have it originally is in the cards though
If a game have rumble, it might be possible to do some small movements on the jog, to have a kind of feedback...
If I remember correctly, VRAlly2 just auto centers the jog, no forcefeedback.
Tried it out. I could see why it was not popular. Also right arm has a defective power switch. Tracking is awful as expected
It's not long enough for exercise and it's not fun enough either
No more hitches on my part using an SD card
Has anyone get the game "ark of time" (PAL exclusive) to work? It won't boot after the language select no matter which language I choose. Settet core settings to default as well als region manually to PAL. No 60h hack or anything activated
Man that sounded like a fun idea but not great in real life
like some of the camera games on ps2
At least I think I've gotten all the controllers I wanted to get for the PS1
Did you dump the game yourself or is it a verified dump? Is it a CHD or anything?
I still need to get a PS1 fishing controller and RC style controller, I think that’s about it
PopN I guess
reminds me I should oil/grease up the fishing controller. It's so noisy
that rc controller looked weird. Reminds me of one of the transformation items on power rangers
It's more like a jogcon in negcon mode right?
No more stuttering now that I've switched to an SD card.
Yah, the comment above says SSD's using external under NTFS don't stutter if formatted as NTFS.
Are USB flash Drives good though or do they stutter too?
This person's YT content, which is PS1 focused, is so good.
So many ps1 gems.
The PS1 has such a great diverse library. Not every console has that.
ASCII GameCube Keyboard Controller has been brought out back and shot, sorry for the mix-up. I hope you're ready for a very special episode of Obscure & Forgotten PS1 games because I somehow made 10 of these... so we might as well celebrate. Let's take another deep dive into the PS1/PSX/PlayStation library. Good games, bad games? Only the wheel ...
check your game image, works fine here
default settings
Yes, CHD, not dumped myself, no redump, but issue is cleared due to dump, thanks
Thanks for verifying, will try another dump 🙂
thanks again for the fast support Kuba 🙂
This might be what finally pushes me over the line and convinces me to set up a NAS. Any recommendations on what NAS to buy/setup?
I like Synology brand because of its simplistic and easy setup and SHR file system.
I built my own years ago and it all still works. It uses freenas/zfs and works great. That said, it's way more complex than something like a Synology. Synology is probably your best bet if you just want to buy something off the shelf and keep it simple.
Their SHR file system allows you to just plop any set of SHR-raided drives into any Synology hardware and it just understands what it's looking at and integrates the drives without much extra on the user end. It's too convenient for a casual dabbler in the storage arts like myself.
Yeah, if you're technical at all you can do your own setup with much more power, flexibility, etc. for cheaper. Synology you're paying a bit for the convenience but they tend to 'just work' which is awesome.
Considering building a 100TB NAS now that Google is enforcing limits on shared drives 😔
Wondering how much power a 5 bay Synology full of 22TB disks will consume though 🤔
i really like unraid. its like a metaraid system so its insanely flexible
mix and match disk sizes, chose your own parity, cache pools, vms, dockers, it does everything
Interesting proposition, will take a look into it.
Presumably that’s how it works. I haven’t used any of the PlayStation ones but I have an adapter to use my actual RC transmitter on my PC for VRC
It’s basically the same as an ultra racer, the wheel is just rotated 90*
Second this. It's really good and flexible, but also very simple. No need to deal with the complexities of other systems if all you want is set and forget.

works fine on Mister 🙂
n64 was robbed I tell you
this game could have been released in this form on the PSX and it would have been great 🙂
Thank you, @ivory verge!
Ooh, thats cool
Sorry I was here first, go find another mod to compliment.
as it's some kind of homebrew, can i friendly ask if they have optional proper controls or is it tank only?
Tank only 🙂
too bad. the first minutes of the youtube video looked promissing
but tank controls are proper controls?
i guess if you grew up with them it's ok. On n64 i never had them and the only game i really played on ps1 was FF8, so i never learned it and i will not start it now 😅
nah I was trolling, I get the reason behind and logic implementation for tank but I think there’s been enough clever solutions to allow for screen oriented controls without losing the presentation of camera cuts to different perspectives.
Although the intent with tank controls in Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil was to make it easier for players to control their character, it ironically was more difficult to learn for most people.
I didn't like tank controls even back then. You get used to it, but it's like getting used to a bad tennis racket.
bad tennis racket, that's a relateable metaphor
For me it is haha. My mom was on the champion high school team
Tank controls are unwieldy :p
IKR, how do people even drive
I don't have much experience driving tanks, and when I drive it's not from the third person in a top down view :p
Pressing up to go south because you pressed left until you slowly spun around, confuzzles me
I feel tank is intuitive for changing camera angles while being chased
Otherwise, it's clunky af
not sure if calling them tank controls is really accurate since you do all the movement with one stick.
and as mentioned if the controls were different it would really be unintuitive during those angle changes.
every time i play a game with fixed camera angles but not tank controls i'm reminded why they're so good
like devil may cry, you switch screens, now you're running right even though you're holding left on the analog stick
this is intuitive ?
are these games different to the FF games in that regard? i never had a problem in FF with the controls there. Sure sometimes, you run the wrong direction after a screen changes and you go back to the previous one, but it's rare
for me tank controls feel super slow to move around. I would probably blame all deaths to the controls
You move decently fast with the run button in classic Resident Evil. But basically every room is essentially a movement puzzle, how do you want to proceed. Do you want to spend some ammo to remove an enemy or do you want to chance dodging them. The more you play them, the more you get comfortable running past things or taking the occasional intentional hit.
It gets very fun on repeat playthroughs trying to do things fast and remember every little task you need to do. You realize how short the games actually are though. Only a few hours at most
its less of a big deal with FF games since they're not action titles
also since FF has a fade down/fade up on screen transitions, wheras in DMC they're instant
I was trying to remember how they did it in FF since like RE you run around with 3d models on 2d BGs
with RE up is forward regardless of screen angle
tank controls are super reliable once you get used to them
(also yeah why are they called tank controls, thats not how you drive a tank at all :D)
katamari demacy has literal tank controls
whoever came up with the name never drove a tank is my guess
In the version of Resident Evil HD , where you can choose the control, I always chose "tank", that's how I learned from the first Residents to play and it's hard for me to change.
yeah the RE0 remake has that too
You can do some funky stuff if you use the modern controls, the enemy AI is really not designed for it
yeah its funny how they use them in speedruns
REmake did such a good job of making the zombies feel scary again. Even when you learn how to bait them, it's still kind of hard to do it consistently. Makes each room a lot more tense lol
Also crimson heads are a fun addition
Tank controls in RE are like the difficulty setting in Souls games: it's part of the experience. The gameplay is dependent on it for a reason. Dodging zombies/monsters attacks is supposed to be a challenge.
they're also inherited from its obvious inspiration, alone in the dark
Yeah, I’ve never had a problem with them. It’s just how you play the game and you either git gud or don’t.
when you first start out, you should just shoot every zombie as safely as possible, you never really need to dodge just act like a turret
The AitD remake is looking promising. Funny how now it's drinking heavily from the modern REs.
play on easy and make sure you carefully search everywhere for ammo and its no real challenge
Unless you're playing Code Veronica and people manage to not have enough bullets by the end of it.
ok yeah CV is actually hard
but there's 3 resident evils to play before it you should be getting good by then 🙂
Happened to more than one of my friends back then "I don't have enough bullets to face this boss"
And once I checked their saves, it was indeed true. LOL
the boss at the very end of disc 1 is where i got stuck back in the day
I play every RE like CV. By the end of them I have enough bullets for a second playthrough. But RE2R they choose to punish people like me.
i actually found that and RE3R a nice challenge
The game adjusts itself to your play style. I felt robbed, but loved it anyways.
yeah its really tightly tuned to like, basically force you to use all your ammo sometimes
its smart, since thats basically every veteren RE players biggest fear at this point 😄
Indeed. The original RE2 is one of my "relaxing games" or games to play while having a conversation.
RE7 was the first RE since the original one to actually make me scream at the TV "Why can't you just die!?"
i can't wait for the RE4VR thing to come out at this point
VR really puts the tension back into the series for me
its like the exact opposite of tank controls, now you have perfect 1:1 control as if you were standing there yourself, can you reload the shotgun before that werewolf gets up though?
VR is something else for sure. For me who loves onrails shooter it's a dream.
But I finally got a guncon 3 for mister. Have a blast with the old Master System games that I used to play back then.
My opinion on tank controls is a bit weird. Imo because that era of survival horror was a direct evolution of non point and click adventure games and those were mostly tank controls. They just added guns and monsters with stuff like alone in the dark and bioforge etc
Code Veronica is an endurance test. It's the last of the classic ones I played and while I didn't run into issues with ammo, that game is so long and confusing. That final boss is such a pain too. It's the one RE I'm fine with only having played once lol
Oh wow, thanks for sharing!
is it just me or is there an uptick in the rate of PSX translations coming out
i can't believe its 2023 and these are still happening. its very cool
maybe tools are better today?
SEGA Saturn also got more interest as of late.
Which is actually a big deal since a lot of the games were limited to a Japan only release.
It’s probably a combination of tooling, exhaustion of interesting 16-bit games left to translate, and a generational shift
The PS1 has like more than 3k games. Lots of it are Japan exclusive.
Saturn has 1k plus and same, lotsa Japan releases.
There's been a new generation of ps1/Saturn lovers who are doing these fanworks, right?
There definitely is. It’s likely a combination of emulation finally being fantastic, tools being widely available, and usually translations begat more translations. Hilltop works is definitely a big contributor there.
I would also consider the impact of AI translations, which got impressingly good with the recent advances in large language models
Yeah that would help a lot
Not a huge deal, really. The hacking part is the limiting factor for the amount of fan translations that get done.
The script still needs to be dumped from whatever game by someone capable
Yep that’s the first step. And then the most work is usually in getting the translated script into the game in a professional looking and bug free way. But that part is usually easier with 32-bit translations compared to earlier consoles actually.
Welcome House is an interesting fully AI localized script. Somehow the incoherent script makes it more enjoyable lol
Work checking out if you’re interested in playing Resident Toon.
Probably a daft question but where would I download the psx 2x core from>
the latest is 20230304
@ivory verge Thanks very much!
Tools have gotten a lot better, sharing of knowledge and helping is also up a lot. Ghidra with accompanying plugins is really really helpful.
But I would argue it's still just up to is the programmer motivated enough to get to the end and is there a translator that wants to work on the script. A lot of projects stall because of one or both of those.
Should I be worried that the intro audio of Colony Wars 1 seems to be clipping, and HDMI audio output shows 0dB (max volume) a lot during the intro?
I’d compare to real hardware first on the same setup.
Also in Colony Wars Red Sun USA version, the intro is very far down the screen. The PAL version intro is centered correctly.
PAL:
NTSC:
I am pretty sure the game was designed with PAL in mind (designed in Leeds UK).
wasn't this the FMV with very strange resolution, like only 128 pixels height? i think the aspect ratio calculation didn't cover resolutions so low. You can see if you open the OSD and go left
It's always been called tank controls because when you stand in place it's like a tank spinning in place and the only way to turn while moving is at the same continuous limited turn rate, just like a tank.
ok but who named them that? maybe we need to correct them. it was probably just something someone came up with to describe the controls and it stuck.
there's probably been a variety of controls for tanks. like two levelers to independently control tracks, steering wheels, etc
if one stick controlled one leg, and the other stick controlled the other leg in RE i'd say yes those are tank controls and hilarity would ensue
Origin of Tank Controls
Named so because it necessitates horizontal movement in a way similar to how an older tank would move.
It wasn't because how an actual tank would be controlled.
what would you call controls that act like how an actual tank would be controlled?
There is a tank game on Atari 2600 that was controlled like that, up down moved tank forward and backward, left and right turns the tank.
Survival horror controls
Classic survival horror.
I remember how I used to hate them, but eventually got used to them.
it never bothered me, but I never have issues with controls in games so I shouldn’t comment lol
I had some, when you play a game for a while, then go to play another with different controls.
i think it works for those games, also limiting controls can be effective in horror games.
You could run on a straight line even with the camera angles changing.
yeah I have a feeling the controls came about because of those angle changes some being a 180 of the last one
Newer 3D games created elegant solutions for this "problem". Like keeping the direction even if wrong until the player moved the analog stick.
I wouldn't call it elegant at all if you are running from something and the perspective changes.
I wouldn’t call that elegant. The moment you stop pushing I. The dieuxndjdjxndj @ornate walrus beat me
I think there is something to enjoy even on the most weird controls like Skeleton Crew or Sub-Terranea on the Genesis. For ST changing the thurst to a button is a must though.
I remember being friends with the rental store owner and in the late 90's when he was selling the 16bit games I asked "What about Sub-Terranea? Have you sold it yet?"
"Nah, that's goes to my collection. Only you and I actually had some enjoyment out of that one."
It requires a neurosurgeon precision to play it properly. Very easy to die on that one, so once I played the first RE I was right at home.
damn, you lucked out. Being friends with the kid I’d a rental store sounds like a dream come true lol
You make a good point. I grew up with PC and played isometric games on NES. You become used to weird controls so your tolerance is high.
It was also a really big arcade too. Probably around 40 or so machines. I almost lived there during my teens early 20's. It had a D&D Shadow over Mystara 4 player machine, TMNT, Simpsons, all KOF, pretty much every big classic from the 90's he had it. geez I miss that place. We drifted apart after I moved states, wonder what he might be up to now.
I was friends with the games rental store near my home back then, one night we played Twisted Metal 2 coop till late night on a 29" TV, after he closed the store. It was very nice. We got to the last stage but lost to the last boss.
TM2/3 was something we used to play to a lot. Was Vigilante 8 better? Never got to play that.
I get 352x240 using fixed hblank and fixed vblank.
The fmv is shifted down and touches the bottom of the screen.
But, Colony Wars 2 is a bad PAL to NTSC conversion anyways. PAL is way better.
Vigilante 8 was better than TM3, but worse than TM2 IMO.
It is worth finding the best version of each game. Since Psygnosis were based in UK, many of their games are optimized for PAL, and then converted to NTSC. The Colony Wars 2 intro looks way worse in the US version, it has ghosting artefacts because they did some bad 50 -> 60 Hz conversion on all the videos. Also, circles got stretched vertically to ellipses when they converted the game to NTSC.
I wonder how many other games are better on PAL. I am sure Wipeout 1-3 are better on PAL. The billboards look better (no Red Bull ads) and the physics are better on PAL. There's even a special edition of Wipeout 3 only released on PAL. That shows the dev's PAL priority.
then I have no problem with "worse" versions of games , I only play PAL versions
Colin McRae Rally 2 is better in PAL, like way better but it was mentioned here a lot already 😄
US Version runs like 16% slower
Wait what
https://tcrf.net/Colin_McRae_Rally_2.0_(PlayStation)
Here is a comparison video and screenshots, the PAL Version even has the real co-pilot, tellin you how the next turn will be, that Colin Mcrae had
i really love the Game but after beating novice mode the advanced Mode got so hard on the Winter Levels that i never could win them
omg I had no idea!
@quick gyro is the framerate the same in both versions?
i think its 50hz in PAL
But the Speed difference in the PAL Version makes the PAL Version the best Version for me, it feels like the Game was ment to be played in that speed. No idea what they did wrong when porting the Game to NTSC
well finally for 5 min I feel good, everyone trampled me when I wrote that I play PAL versions of games, I experienced a trauma until now I can't get up 😛
i grew up with PAL and i cannot see or feel the difference between 50hz and 60hz, i get the difference between 60hz and 30hz but 50hz is good enough for me 😄
I just play the way I did in the 90s. It's a matter of nostalgia for me 🙂
I’m a professional race car driver and I’ve studied pixel movement differentials in both videos and have concluded that the NTSC version is more accurate to the actual speed of the vehicles.
