Is it weird that I consider Raiden one of the best looking games on PS1? The amount of details and stuff that goes on is so great.

bronze pulsar
#

Seibu Kaihatsu shmups are quite good in general

dawn wind
#

What else do they make? It seems strange that their art and sound is so on point when all they make are a couple shmup series. Or maybe that’s why it’s so good…

bronze pulsar
#

Shmups mostly like you said, though they also made Dynamite Duke, Empire City: 1931 and Dead Angle

#

My personal favorite is Viper Phase 1, had a pcb of it years ago

dawn wind
#

I played that once in an arcade and have wanted it ever since…

bronze pulsar
#

Raiden DX on PSX actually has a bonus soundtrack, the OST from Viper Phase 1

#

Yeah it's awesome

dawn wind
#

I saw that - just doesn’t fit Raiden though :/

bronze pulsar
#

True

dawn wind
#

Of all the games I grabbed at launch, it’s just weird how Raiden Project impressed me so much (and the wow factor didn’t wear off, unlike Toshinden)

bronze pulsar
#

Oh man, Toshinden. I had the longbox of that, Ridge Racer.. and Tekken maybe? I was a PSX teenager, none of that silly N64 kids stuff for me!(=P)

#

Cant forget this one

I picked up the longbox of wipEout when I bought my PSX; after that it was all rentals, HK silvers, then CDRs for the next 5 years.
Still have that original copy of wipEout for some reason.

is there any major difference between the JAP and USA version of this game? If not i do like being able to understand text, even in a shooter it is usually of minimal importance 😁

#

Oh and the one good thing about the cd32 controller is that it in fact had 6 buttons, vs the one or two on a standard stick used on the amiga. Altho one of the things i loved about mister is mapping keyboard stuff (space, shift etc) used in game to my joypad!

Sorry for digging this one up. Just wondering if some modified settings are needed (welp i guess they are hence me asking) but i never notice any gfx anomalies with my settings with ps1 games (on crt) but with this game i indeed see some corruption at the bottom of the screen. Any suggestions on what to tweak? Will provide a screenshot if it would help.

#

Oh and this is with the JAP version of F1 97 btw

#

Lol really? Well i do know from first hand experience the pal to 60hz setting worked very nicely. Will try. Cheers!

#

I was lured in by the bizarre creations bit. Not sure if they did the first one as well. Will give that one a go as well. Pretty sure i played it ‘back in The day’ as well on a rented ps1.

Cool! Big fan of msr and especially pgr3. F1 97 didn’t make a great first impression even taking the gfx issue out of the equation

This was the reason I started watching F1. Remember I had to choose between this game and a Multi Mega (small Mega CD). I picked the game since I already had a Sony Disc man. Watching F1 was the best part of my teenage years (Michael Schumacher was my childhood hero). Even my son is named Michael. So probably everyone will tell me I made a bad choose not buying the Sega, but I think it was destiny. 😉

This breaks compatibility with ridge racer 4.

I always thought these were kind of interesting. The actual NES games ran on an emulator with ROMs hacked to disable the music, so the disc just either streamed the original 2A03 music or the arranged tracks from XA files.

So like.. MSU-1 before MSU-1. Or something.

#

maybe someone with xstation can...i only have psio and i don't use it for anything that could be CD related 😅

wise cargo
#

This is why I have a MiSTer, so I don't have to have real hardware 😁

tropic stratus
#

i'm interested what is going on there... the game reads no CD sector for like 40 seconds. I have only seen something similar with die hard, which was related to memory card

#

ok that's the reason: if the memcard is removed, the game boots fast

#

same with using snac+real memcard as controller option, so it's not a timing issue or CD, but rather the emulated memcard

#

loading and saving ingame with virtual memcard is also super slow

wise cargo
#

That's interesting. So do you suspect this happens on real hardware with a real memory card or is this a byproduct of the virtual memory card?

tropic stratus
#

that's the question. anyone with snac + real memcard could try on the core

#

i don't have my setup ready for this currently

#

when i tried, i only activated SNAC but had no memcard, so it behaves just like removing the virtual memcard

#

but that could explain why duckstation and mednafen also have the issue: if it's really related to virtual memcard, maybe the game has some odd non-standard code to access the memcard and no emulated memcard is prepared for that

stable perch
#

or maybe it's a bug in the game.... stranger things have happened...

tropic stratus
#

i should have bought a xstation modded psx last year, but somehow always tried to get through with what i have. If it's for verify and not for debugging, someone here always tested and i had my excuse 😅

#

for executing tests, PSIO is much more useful than xstation due to direct USB connection, but unfortunatly not for verifying real games

#

with real MC in port 1, it hung for 50 seconds also

abstract drift
#

i wonder how the devs didn't notice

#

that must of been infuriating for their qa

tropic stratus

abstract drift

ivory verge

tropic stratus

# lusty knot certainly LOTS of games play much better. but when you qualify with "targeted"....

There would have been zero incentive for games publishers to create games with those higher end machines in mind

Then you had the American broadcast market rendering Lightwave animations and using the Toaster for video wipes and transitions

Hoping for help describing a bug before I'd add a GitHub report. Can't seem to search the "PSX" thread to check for previous discussions or potential fix.
PAL Analog output can ~~often ~~have a sort of "warble?". Visuals jitter up and down, but not always. Often on the PSX boot menu, but for a game example this is Final Fantasy VIII. (EDIT: Attempts to find in other games failed. Maybe it is only the FF8 intro and the odd boot screen)
PAL, RGB, vga_mode=rgb; composite_sync=1

#

Checking my PS2 (no longer have PS1), the visuals do fluctuate in intensity, but the up/down jitter is not present.
The same scene from the intro cutscene looks fine on NTSC. Same INI setings.
NTSC, RGB, FF8 intro again

#

Any potential fix or user error I might be missing? On previous play I thought to myself maybe it was always this way. Does get a bit tiring on the eyes though!

final salmon
#

Ya. Does the same thing on Composite too via adapter

#

Once you skip the cutscene, the "New Game" screen has no obvious image shake then. It seems odd

abstract drift
#

might be all the places you're seeing it are interlaced

#

check for it just in the bios thats 480i

final salmon
#

Will do. Didn't record the resolution output. It was only intro cutscene. The "New Game" cutscene seemed fine, FFIX was fine, etc...
I'll check it now

final salmon
# abstract drift might be all the places you're seeing it are interlaced

Might be it.
Boot Screen: 704x576i
PAL FF8 Intro (as in video): 704x576i
PAL FF8 New Game Screen (looks good): 405x288
PAL FF8 New Game Cutscene (fine again): 352x288
I'd foolishly went from intro to new game cutscene thinking they'd be similar. Guess not.
Also....
NTSC FF8 Intro (as in video): 704x480i. Maybe it is PAL "480" (which seems to be 576i in the core)

abstract drift
#

yeah sorry i should of said pal is 576 high

#

ntsc is 480, so that all checks out

final salmon
#

Thanks very much. Clarifies the issue nicely! I don't suppose you know any other 480i (or 576i) examples I could use to test before I make the report?

abstract drift
#

menus in silent hill, dino crisis and chrono cross are all interlaced

final salmon
#

Thank you

abstract drift
#

check and make sure you have "sync 480i for hdmi" turned off

#

under video & audio

#

not certain but that might affect it

final salmon
#

Not sure if better or worse. "sync 480i for hdmi" had been On.
When switched to OFF, OSD menu now flickers, and quiet a lot too. The cutscene section I'd noted looks perhaps a little better. I think it is still shaking though... starting to doubt my eyes

#

Is this how "sync 480i for hdmi" is intended then?
I saved the setting OFF, then restarted the core. The PS boot icon looked perfect. 576i.

#

Though, the Memory Card - CD Player scene immediately after, still 576i, is shaking.
I then loaded FF8 again, no shaking at all in the cutscene. Not sure what to make of that.

#

System had been set to AUTO. Noticed on boot it quickly starts around 60Hz before going down to PAL. Setting core to PAL, saving, and resetting the core fixed the boot (Now showing PAL boot, not NTSC menu forced into 49.7Hz).
FF8 still did seem to have a little jitter, though perhaps that's just staring too long at interlaced.

#

TLDR: Seemingly a difference in how NTSC and PAL are handled. But is this "sync 480i for hdmi" working as intended then?
Thanks very much Freddo. Got a workable fix at least for sure!

abstract drift
#

even when iits working perfectly you're going to see a little up/down motion on long horizontal edges

#

thats just normal interlacing

#

it might be more obvious at 50hz since its moving slower

tropic stratus
#

you should never activate "sync 480i for hdmi" when using analog out. As the name says, it's only for HDMI(scaler) to not loose sync on interlaced<->non-interlaced switches. The result is, that it makes interlaced content run with non-interlaced timing

To all the people who insulted me when I asked if there were N64 games that could play with shortcuts and below clock speed, I say: if you can’t be technically specific about why something isn’t possible, maybe don’t say anything discouraging.

tropic stratus
#

actually the shortcut solution was my initial plan: only make the decompile projects (Mario64, OoT, Mario Kart,...) run with a custom CPU and otherwise normal N64 components. But well, if you go so far, you can just also do the CPU. Even if it really requires a hack or two, it's still better than a custom CPU

tacit fox

Sorry for anyone that took a hit on that, but we all thought it couldn't be done

mystic violet
#

@tropic stratus you lost your mind 😉 n64? 🙂

hidden prism
#

I agree. It’s nice to know my instincts weren’t too far of 🙂

visual depot
#

There are many projects where we can't put a finger on if it's possible or not, so most stay silent with hope. But N64 was one of those that most people put their foot down

tropic stratus
#

i said it myself: some years ago i made a very quick prototype of the cpu. non-working, just to check the timing and it came out at 85 Mhz in a empty FPGA. That's why i intially also scraped the idea and did Lynx, Wonderswan and PSX instead. But over time, you learn more things

#

i still think we will not reach timing closure for 93mhz, but that doesn't mean it cannot run. PSX turbo improvements showed that there are other ways to improve the performance if it needs to

hidden prism
#

I believe I asked “how many games would run fine at 80mhz since they might be blocked on memory or RDP anyway?” 😉

tropic stratus
#

the answer is: most. E.g. play a game on ares today. It effectly underclocks the CPU massivly due to wrong cache timing

hidden prism
#

yup. Part of my question was based on my experience with UltraHLE and other early N64 emulators

#

(I based my first startup, BugScan, around the ideas I learned about symbolic execution from HLE)

tropic stratus
#

Project 64 is even better. It has a database of games telling if the cpu with that game should run with 93mhz or 50% or 33% speed

hidden prism
#

Oh nice, the data already somewhat exists then! 😄

#

I assume a better cache Implementation might also alleviate some of the loss in clock speed by eliminating some fetches

#

maybe even a “simple” prefetch, depending on if that would help specific games

Get a N64 room channel, guys! 😛

the arcade is used to go to back in the day had a machine

#

it was fine

hot marsh
#

It's cute if you know the choreo

oblique frost
#

back when bemani was a lot more experimental

hot marsh
#

Actually playing is not yhat fun

#

Sensors arent great

shut escarp
#

Pop n is good

#

I use to play a lot of Para para

hot marsh
#

Para basically comes with a separate vcd

shut escarp
#

If the line was too long on DDR

#

I played it in the arcade, I can’t imagine the home port being good enough

hot marsh
#

Then you memorize tge dance and repeat it on arcades or game

#

It's awful. Para para is closest via kinect

#

Through dance evolution

oblique frost
#

nowadays there's Dance Rush Stardom

#

though it's more about foot work than hand work

hot marsh
#

And yes i memorized this choreo

#

Yeah dance rush is a step back in terms of tracking and dancing

#

But yeah more focus on fun

oblique frost
#

Just like DDR, there's never a line for Dance Rush

#

everyone plays Mai Mai now

#

at the arcade near me I frequent, there's an old dude who shows up and plays DDR songs on the most basic step charts but does his own dance with them

#

seems like he's having fun

hot marsh
#

Oh yeah that is in my country too

#

Too bad steel pads arent common anymore

#

Still have my shitty dual ddr pad setup

#

But i dont like ddr on ps1, even on mister

#

I use dancemania

#

It's too strict and my fave songs are all over the place

oblique frost
#

tbh DDR was kinda annoying until like Max, I think, when we finally got mods

#

imagine playing on 1x all the time, madness

hot marsh
#

I dropped out on the ps2 era mostly

#

On og ps1, i was too worried about the dance pad moving away

#

That like 5 step songs were impossible to get As

#

Like you know ddr is dead if mario jumped on it

oblique frost
#

DDR is still clinging to life

hot marsh
#

Currently spoiled by kinect dance games

#

I mean it has its dedicated fans

oblique frost
#

the new A series machines and stuff have all new stuff and all old stuff

hot marsh
#

Not enough to be in my country though

#

Havent seen ddr in 10 years in the local arcade

#

They even shifted to dance central at some point

#

Via 360

#

Anyway got to sleep.

Robert only made the N64 to keep people from asking for fixes on FMV games

tropic stratus
#

are there FMV games with issues?

ivory verge
#

I didn't notice, but I don't think anyone reported anything

tropic stratus
#

i only know of the minor fmv issues (all intros) in github

ivory verge
#

Yes, other than what's on github I haven't seen anything

hard laurel
#

I am only aware of very minor issues.

#

Nothing major.

#

Any further thoughts on the PITA that is Virtual Pool 3 and its weird Audio?

bronze pulsar
hot marsh
#

Aww, wonder if stolen song or the other one (forgot which one) works since it's an FMV game

#

and uses the vpick that I bought

serene nebula
#

@hot marsh I just bought a pop’n music controller lol

#

Is there a list of PS1 controllers/accessories available? Want to see what cool oddities are available for the system.

oblique frost
#

called it

#

Robby you need the guitar freaks controller

serene nebula
#

I have it! But no strap 😢

oblique frost
#

what about the pachinko controller

#

so you can make pretend you're a salaryman

bronze pulsar
#

Famicom's got you covered

oblique frost
#

coconuts

hot marsh
#

anyone know if the mat is important for the tambourine

serene nebula
#

Don’t think so

#

It’s only USD $6! ||but $67 shipping 😭||

hot marsh
#

that sneaky shipping price though

#

well on the plus side, tax won't get you much

#

Like if I were to buy it, it would be like $90 due to shipping from US to my country

#

and I'll probably cheap out and ship it by sea

#

But I'll probably stop with the controllers I got

#

maybe Pop n music at most

serene nebula
#

Yeah, excited to give that a shot.

hot marsh
#

i mean, if you like it, there's a lot of pop n music games on ps1 and 2

#

basically it's the equivalent of me having multiple taiko drums

#

because it has like:
12 ps2 games, 5 wii games, 3 wii u games, 3 switch games, 1 ps4 game, 3 ds games (probably more), 1 vita game (i think), 3 3ds games

serene nebula
#

So many!

hot marsh
#

yeah i didn't initially list the handheld ones

serene nebula
#

wow check out this controller

hot marsh
#

yeah that's why it's my guess it's the guitar hero of Japan

serene nebula
#

Crazy

#

Well thanks for the inspiration! Will have fun with pop’n music for sure.

hot marsh
#

thank gawd for kinect

#

removing stuff like those sensors

#

although Switch has a game like Martial Beat 2

#

martial beat isn't prized too crazy

#

although I don't think I'd use it to replace any of my cardio stuff

#

also wtf, there are only 13 songs

Finally got around to making a listing to the memory card add-ons for the PSX SNAC adapters. I realize I like building them a whole lot more than writing copy for them.
Anyway, if anybody has a SNAC adapter than doesn't have this addon, now you can use memory cards too!

I am so excited for the N64 core I’m contemplating playing Space Station Silicon Valley for the PS1.

Any impressions from people here who’ve played it?

devout nacelle
#

DMA design the company that made that game is now known as Rockstar North.

serene nebula
#

@devout nacelle it’s an awesome game, on the N64

tulip moat
#

I heard the PS1 version suffers from a lot of performance issues.

manic valley
devout nacelle
#

The video mentioned the N64 version had issues with the expansion pack. You gotta take it out to play it or it freezes at the beginning.

tulip moat
devout nacelle
#

There is a hack that fixes that and the 1 trophy you can't pick up.

#

GTA needs a good game hack..

manic valley
#

Try it on the psx2x core

devout nacelle
manic valley
#

Maybe even more

manic valley
#

Well at least it’ll keep a steady 30

devout nacelle
#

Not easy finding a disk image of space station silicon valley for ps1

#

Knowing used a different name on PS1 would have helped..lol

pseudo plinth
pseudo plinth
devout nacelle
#

Yeah I figured that out

serene nebula
#

I don’t know why or how

fallow turtle
#

somehow i've completely missed the fact space station sillicon valley got released on PS1.. always thought it was an n64 exclusive lol

serene nebula
#

PAL-only which might be why you didn’t know

fallow turtle
#

👀 PAL here. maybe it's just a bit of an obscure sleeper release

#

called Evo's Space Adventures funnily enough

serene nebula
#

Shame on me for assuming, my bad

fallow turtle
#

hehe

#

i have played a tiny bit of the 64 one but never got too deep. early part of the game was fairly standard but can imagine it picking up later on

#

kinda fun seeing some shared ideas from early GTA games but in a completely different context

serene nebula
#

They do a good job of varying up the scenarios and puzzles, really clever

fallow turtle
#

the whole thing of going in and out of animals like they're cars on the street almost LOL

serene nebula
#

It’s funny that both Space Station Silicon Valley and Body Harvest were foundational games for Grand Theft Auto 3

fallow turtle
#

oh yeah Body Harvest is one i wanna have another look at one day.. and Blast Corps lol

#

im pretty sure i completely forgot Body Harvest even exist and just conflated it with Blast Corps

dawn wind
#

I remember enjoying Blast Corps back in the day?

kind ravine
#

Apparently the first release of Silicon Valley doesn’t work with the expansion pack but they patched it out in a cart revision

fallow turtle
#

blast corps seems decent yeah

#

that'll explain it :D

#

when i got the everdrive 64 and had the entire library to casually browse thru.. the one game that really stood out to me (that i missed as a kid... ) Pilotwings 64 is really good!!!

#

any time i feel like booting into a fun casual game pilotwings is super decent

#

i loved the SNES pilotwings and i think sort of snubbed the n64 version because i thought it looked kinda ugly or something lol

light cloud
#

What’s the controller trigger to turn light gun mode on? Since the core seems to periodically set the menu button to be light gun mode toggle on the dualsense after toggling between analog and digital mode by pressing the touch pad

tropic stratus
#

sorry i don't get that. Can you describe exactly what i have to do to reproduce?

#

i'm not even sure what lightgun mode is...crosshair overlay? controller selection in OSD?

light cloud
#

I’m not even sure what it’s trying to do. Maybe simulate a light gun? But totally disables menu button combo (have to access osd through io board)

#

I’ll try and figure out exact steps to replicate though

#

Replicate on dualsense:
Start up ridge racer R4
Pad 1 is in DualShock mode
Press touch pad twice to toggle analog, back to digital
Press button set as home button (I’ve tried both mute and ps button), menu button will now toggle light gun mode (light gun mode is on -off)

#

Doesn’t have to be R4, I was just playing that earlier and seemed to be pretty consistent for changing home button behavior

hot marsh
tropic stratus
abstract drift
#

i've had this too, but super randomly

#

i think it can happen in any lightgun capable core

light cloud
#

I meant “button mapped to home” as button which is set to bring up osd from main. And I have the main controller buttons mapped, but not savestate, fastforward, pause or toggle DualShock

abstract drift
#

are you using the playstation button as home?

light cloud
#

Yes, I was previously using mute

#

And it’s always been a bit sporadic

abstract drift
#

did mute do it too?

light cloud
#

Yeah, both were doing it periodically. Just remapped a few times and a bit less consistent now

#

Double checked and dual sense is fully up to date (ps5 firmware checker)

abstract drift
#

see it you can get it to happen on snes core?

light cloud
#

Snes core I usually can’t replicate. But I’ll try to do that tomorrow

#

Is there a short cut for light gun mode?

#

Kind of like rapid fire that’s accidentally getting triggered 🤔

abstract drift
#

thats the weird thing, i'm not even sure what lightgun mode its referring to there tbh

#

there's a lightgun calibration menu you can open with f10

#

oh, maybe its a mouse thing, when you touch the touchpad it can act like a mouse

#

thats probably whats getting set to lightgun mode

#

@tropic stratus nice racer recommendation if you've not seen it, Rally De Africa/Rally De Europe

#

JPN only but most of the menu text etc in english

#

plays a lot like sega rally

tropic stratus
#

i will try it 🙂

abstract drift
#

possibly you can more reliably reproduce that bug if you like, make sure you actually swipe the touchpad a bit

#

dont just push it

fallow turtle
#

maybe if there's a way for a toggle to be implemented similar to the autofire toggle that recently-ish got added?

abstract drift
#

thing is i think its harmless?

#

as soon as you press a controller button it'll go back to controller mode and stop doing it?

fallow turtle
#

ahh i see

ivory verge
tropic stratus
#

when a bug entry makes you happy 🙂

#

"Okay, looks like the flickering is normal on a real PSOne, it even changes the level of flickering when I plug in a 2nd controller, so the MiSTer PSX core is mimicking the behavior with incredible accuracy, so false alarm."

ivory verge
#

yes , such bugs are cool 😄

tropic stratus
#

i mean, it could easily have been a real bug, who knows that. But now it payed off that even the emulated pad timing was adjusted to be relativly close to the original

eternal vapor
#

About the light gun mode thing: this happens to me whenever I press menu while having my finger on the TouchPad. At first I was confused too but now I just make sure to keep my finger off the TouchPad when pressing home.

#

I thought it was intentional haha

eternal vapor
#

Is there an advantage to keeping separate memory card files for each game?

serene nebula
#

Also that’s the default option so that’s one less thing to configure

eternal vapor
#

Ah that makes sense, thanks 🙂

I had the auto mount off for a specific purpose and I was just wondering if I should bother setting it back on

#

But I can see it becoming a mess juggling them around with it off

serene nebula
#

If you like having one memory card there’s nothing wrong with it. Feels more authentic too.

#

Just don’t save a game in Diablo lol

lilac scaffold
#

There a few games that look for saves from other games (eg mantis in mgs commenting on other Konami games), otherwise auto mount is just easier 🙂

eternal vapor
#

Gotcha, makes sense. Thanks guys!

serene nebula
#

If anyone was curious, there’s the full lineup

shut escarp
#

Yeah I definitely recommend keeping auto mount on, and if you do run across a game that has one of these features you just load both cards in the bios and copy the relevant save over

oblique frost
#

Imma nitpick, this isn't quite full

shut escarp
#

It’s missing all the rhythm games

oblique frost
#

if you are for some reason playing SMT If..., there's a whole list of games you can gain certain boosts from if you have their save data

serene nebula
#

Rhythm games aren’t games, they’re torture devices

oblique frost
#

rhythm games are the pinnacle of gaming, distilled to its essence

tall rover
oblique frost
#

beat my mania

serene nebula
#

I didn’t know about the rhythm games, that’s cool. Is there a list handy?

#

Maybe that image was just for US released games?

oblique frost
#

IIRC there's some beatmania with append discs

#

and save data goes between

#

I'd have to go look

serene nebula
#

Oh that’s cool

serene nebula
oblique frost
#

so that list is sorta for US games. "US" doesn't account for some of the games MGS will read (some of those only J/A versions will only read J saves and have some specific region'd games) and also only one of the Persona 2s got localized

serene nebula
#

Ohhhhh

#

Thanks for explaining it!

oblique frost
#

I'm sure there's more I don't know about, but somehow I guess I've gone an encountered some of the weirder ones

#

SMT If... had me booting up games I hadn't heard of just to get save data for the boost in SMT If...
