I made a nice app icon but when I use it for my app it's unrecognizable.
What can I do? Do I need lower or higher res? Do I need a type of image (Im using png)?

Tray icons are scaled down a bunch so it looks weird there I guess, could try using a higher res maybe?

The app icon is scaled down to the point tha the fine lines of your app icon are too small to be shown. You need to make an icon that's more simple and that doesn't rely on fine lines and small details to be recognizable.

I also thought that was the case but look at java's icon (It also has fine lines)

Try downscaling your image to the correct size. You might be able you use a better antialiasing that better preserves your details. You might not be able to use a transparent background though
