I use the 1M and 5M charts for scalping with 15M 30M and 1H charts open too to keep my eye on the bigger picture. Scalping Gold is going pretty well so far, but if you keep your eye on the price you can scalp towards the swings

time frames are fractals, you see the same price action play out across the board, but there are nuances you can catch from the smaller time frames and bigger picture to be gained from higher time frames. every timeframe is related to one another.

I like the 1M because i can get really precise entries, but also because i can get earlier warning of invalidations... that cuts both ways though because its easy to get lost in minute details the more you zoom in. Most important thing is figuring out the best setup for YOU.

Hey guys, quick question for those who run algotrading on prop firms.
What time span do you usually use for backtesting your strategies?

Since prop firm accounts are completely different from trading your own capital (because of evaluation periods, drawdown rules, etc.), I’m not sure what time window makes the most sense to test on.

From what I understand, doing huge historical ranges like 10–15 years doesn’t really make sense for prop trading, because the account lifespan is limited and conditions change a lot.

If anyone has experience here, I’d really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance!

Oh gold is bullish AF! but pullbacks are part of trends, even on smaller timeframes markets form fib levels and Elliot waves. bu you can always wait and catch those pull backs from the other side.... I like taking the pullbacks that give me old data so I can see where things are likely to move back too. you can use fib extensions to try and aim for discovery zones but how can you get any volume data? I guess you might be able to get some data from futures markets?

In my limited experience price loves to return to the POC, and when it breaks to either side it really moves in either direction.

how many years? I have been trading for 6 years and I am still not consistently profitable. Do you KNOW that your problem is emotional bias? That's the best thing I could say...
every single consistently profitable trader I have ever heard speak about their journey has said the average time to really get a handle on the skill is 4-6 years.
Automation is awesome, but when you really find your own Zen in the markets its like a license to print money. Don't give up on mastering manual trading.
but don't waste the opportunity to to utilize automation and technology either.

There's a 101 different things that could be factors you're not considering and attributing your challenges to your own emotions.
positions sizing, analysis, execution, time framing.

fear and greed don't go away.

neither do emotions.

you just get better at managing them.

greed is good, its what makes you want to win and provide for your loved ones.

Fear is good, it what helps you avoid painful mistakes.

but they are both double edged swords!

I LOVE quants and automation,
but algorithmic trading isn't a holy grail.
algorithms can and often do lose their edge as market conditions shift and change based on organic and unpredictable human behavior.
Market makers own algorithms shift and change and effect the entire landscape.
black swan events disrupt entire industries and markets.

your best bet in my humble opinion is to embrace your so called "failure" and totally reframe it as your tuition, as your curriculum.
use all the tools that give you an edge, but never abandon the greatest asset you have: YOU!!!

Your mind is NOT deficient.
the fact you're here proves that, you made an intelligent decision to engage in the most CHALLENGING & REWARDING competition in the entire world, or at least one of them.
Don't expect that to be so simple and easy. And don't arbitrarily judge yourself as deficient. this isn't an overnight thing.

You’d just need to experiment with the SL/TP levels to see which suits you and your trading style. If the price is volatile using SL 2 may be better than using SL 1.

e) Smart Trail (setting 3): Blue for long and red for short

Exit: 1:2/3 ratio at the next swing high/low

My core fear behind obsessively learning about trading is that I can't ask for money from anyone not as a loan or otherwise. Please let me know if it's a good reason to learn trading???

I may not understand your pain, however I see how life is troubling given your circumstances.

However, there’s no great way to answer this. You shouldn’t be asking anyone for money IF you don’t have a strategy.
I personally asked people for promissory notes once I started doing well. I got investors from a networking group in Dallas, TX. I grew more into that and did well.
Your situation causes you stress, there’s nothing that I can do for you besides prayer.

My honest feedback, continue learning and growing in one strategy that you enjoy and find decent amount of profitability from while paper trading. When you’re confident in yourself and your strategy, seek prop firms or something.

With all of that said, the stock market is not going anywhere. Don’t fear of not trading. Excel in school, graduate with the best academic scores that you can, and show love and appreciation for your family and friends. Once you have a good income coming in, then start looking to use capital that you can afford to trade with.
