I swing trade whereas most people here seem to day trade.

I look for entry ideas on 4hr, 1d and 1w timeframes and stay in the trade until it hits my TP or there is a clear reversal.

If it’s a long trend I’ll pyramid in and add entries on the way. For each additional entry I’ll have a SL of 1% of capital and move SL of other entries higher.

My biggest problems were definitely greed —> entering with positions too large —> rapid large losses when wrong but psychologically hard to exit. 1% risk when entering is far easier. Size is small when doing that but if you pyramid in it’s enough.

Here’s an example for ETH

I wanted to long the bottom of this weekly channel / the weekly support line (log scale) at 2200.

On this trade I used the daily ATR (average true range) for the SL. At the time, the ATR = the average daily range of ETH was around $150. In other words, I was happy for it to wick by an amount equal to the average daily range below the support line before I considered the trade invalidated. This is arbitrary but you need to accept some degree of error as others may be 200x longing the same point and therefore it’s likely to wick below to liquidate / stop them.

Say you had a 30k account and were willing to risk 1% = $300. $300 / ATR of $150 is 2. So you’d long at $2200 with a unit size of 2 ETH and a SL of $2050.

If you were really confident and wanted to risk 2% = $600, you’d enter with a size of 4 ETH at $2200 with the SL still at $2050.

Gold I wanted to short this line for a monthly resistance idea; log scale: not yet a trendline as it had only hit twice.

Shorted 2660. I was too confident in it and used half daily ATR of $30 for SL.

Got stopped on all entries other than one above the line at 2681.

Yeah I was often the same. The reversal entries are always super risky. So you need a fairly tight SL and can’t enter with too much size.

For NQ I entered at 18.4 for this flag idea.

At the time, the upper resistance line and an apparent midline were visible —> can form an idea where the bottom border of the channel / flag will be.

I think this is the only way to trade patterns like pennants / flags: find them before they are complete as when they’re clearly visible and everyone is aware of them, they’re likely to break down. If everyone is leverage longing the same point it probably won’t hold.

In crypto, it’s super common that there will be a clear pennant. If you take the upper line of the pennant and use it to form a channel, there’s often a clear midline. It is common that they break the pennant down to a flag —> opportunity to long the bottom of the flag before everyone has identified it. However, if they do this, the market maker intent can be to fuck as many longs as possible. Usually it bounces from the bottom of the flag on first test but if it retests the bottom later, it often breaks down.

Here’s an example (not the best one) for ETH/BTC

This is better. I’d add to my long if it hit the bottom of the flag.

Crypto is interesting to trade. Took me a long time to realise, but I think the primary intent of forming patterns is to wreck retail traders. But with that knowledge you can still use patterns to your advantage. Equities and indices don’t seem to be as “manipulated” as I think a lot of trading is still done in spot, eg pension funds —> if everyone is spot buying the same point it is likely to bounce which is not true if everyone is leverage buying the same point. But this is just a hypothesis.
