#looking for a large printer for cosplay items/masks (preferably in one piece) complete beginner

looks affordable, thank you for the recommendation :)
does the quality matter if I can sand the print down afterwards?
will the print be paintable afterwards as well? if so, what paint works for 3d models? not sure where to start
Wdym
you need to prime all 3d prints
you need either canned primer or airbrush primer
and things like vallejo model color paints or vallejo air brush paints or the army painter 2.0 speed paints
and then a clearcoat
if you're not printing in resin you will probably have visible layer lines
yeah, resin just seems too complicated for me right now. also seems to only work with smaller prints. would sanding the print down a little afterwards help with the layer lines?
well not really complicated, more high matinence compared to fdm
as in manually painting onto the model afterwards instead of printing in different colors
if the resin printer is likely to work better with what I'm looking for I'm willing to look into one of those instead. just worried a larger area will cost more
i'm hoping to be able to make something similar to this; image credits: https://willowcreativ.com/portfolio/costumes/
mechanics aside, mostly referring to size
she's the one who reccommended the anycubic kobra max on her story
Normal fdm prints don’t sand down very well
It’s rigid plastic with only a few surface top layers
hmmm I see. that's tough
from what I've learned the cosplayer I linked uses very similar methods
here's a better reference
I'd probably be fine with the quality shown in the image. anything worse would be hard to ignore tho. does primer help with layer lines at all?
Ah, if you print it right and you sand it a bit you can do that
oh ok that might work. I’m actually looking into this as well since @patent flame mentioned resin https://www.anycubic.com/products/photon-mono-m5s?gclid=CjwKCAjw-b-kBhB-EiwA4fvKrIPWLPLIJwhUvCsXFpQXiVF1jeAFOIybBXYlNL2jNt5K2EcPwicLqhoCW1MQAvD_BwE
Anycubic Photon Mono M5s is the first consumer-grade resin printer equipped with a 10.1-inch monochrome LCD screen with an impressive resolution of up to 11520*5120. With its innovative auto-leveling solution, this printer revolutionizes LCD 3D printing, delivering unparalleled precision and convenience.
roughly 10 inches so it looks like it would print a full mask in one piece
How many printers have you had or is this your first one?
this is fast, but compromises on detail
layer lines are visible with this specific printer
because it is what it says it is, fast
and has some weird opaque fep film that causes a loss of detail
first, complete beginner
that shouldnt be your first resin machine
ah man I thought resin focused on detail
I would go with a LONGER 5 pro if it's your first printer
go with elegoo
Resin is not a beginner thing
what is longer?
I’m completely fine with it taking a while
so with resin
It's a brand
you're going to need more than the printer and resin
air purifiers?
you'll want a silicon matt, UV flashlight for cleaning spills, lots of paper towels, lots of gloves, respirator
and a wash and cure station
because once resin prints are done they need to be washed in either water or IPA
and then cured with UV
oh jeez so the price of the machine won’t be the final cost?
far from it
Alot more then a fdm printer
that's just the first part of the process
all in for a beginner printer you'll be around 500
yeah fdm seems like the best option by far, worried about detail tho
this is the printer and the wash and cure station for 332
hoping to build a portfolio for college
then you'd need resin and cleaup stuff
If your print settings are right and you have a good printer your quality will be good
layer lines for painting are not optimal on fdm machines
even with the limited amount of sanding that can be done
it's also harder to print stuff like masks on fdm
with the crazy amount of supports needed for overhangs
I just think since you're a first time printer get a fdm printer
it just depends on how much work you want to put in
this might sound weird but what if I torched the lines or something and flattened them down with my hands? too crazy?
No
Don't
you -could- do acetone fume bath
for smoothing it out
but that's a lot of acetone and needs a well ventilated place much like resin needs
I have an uhhh garage
in some ways resin will be easier for printing stuff like this that focuses on detail
because FDM will need a rediuclous amount of supports
What is your price range
and depending on the printer you get for this budget will be slower than resin
in total id say like 600 max? maybe more?
if you want to go fdm, go bambu p1p
699
nothing else is worth it IMO
p1p is painless 15 min setup, super fast, and will save you a LOT of troubleshooting
Oh hell yea, I forgot about the Bambu
i have their x1 carbon
the p1p is basically just a stripped down version of it
and by far the best printer for the budget
Yea, but since you are a first time printer, go with fdm to get a basic understanding of how a 3d printer works, it helps a lot down the road in your 3d printing journey
p1p will be good because you won't spend 12 hours of your time troubleshooting issues with cheap unreliable fdm printers
Yea that's good
p1p is an extremely solid choice if you want to fork out the 699
Is the Bambu direct drive?
yes
does it connect using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?
Or octoprint
Damn that sucks
it sucks because bambu already does it better than octoprint
only programs I have are zbrush and blender, still getting used to those too lol
ohh I see. does it come with the product?
here's the only thing you need to do to get it printing
you slice up the model and press send
yes, it's free
okay that seems doable
Yea get the Bambu then later when you have the money and experience get the resin printer
do I have to make the supports myself or does the program put them in automatically?
It does it itself
program will make them automatically
oh good I was worried about that
All slicers have automatic supports
But
You can turn them off
For like printing wings
And other stuff
are printers a fire hazard at all?
If you don't get a cheap Chinese printer you will be fine
lol okay good to know
modern printers aren't a fire risk
But you should be able to start a print and leave your house
here's an example of auto generated tree supports
With our risk
bambu even has AI monitoring for prints and will pause it when it detects a problem
and uses AI detection and LiDAR to analyze the first layer
Look up videos and learn to use the slicer, it will help a lot
do the supports use up a lot of the material?
Nope
depends on how big the model is
Tree supports are the best
but they are a lot less dense than the print
oh that’s a releif
how much material would I have to buy every month would you guys say?
in the case I use it every day for large masks
depends on how much you'd be printing
if you had it cranking 24/7 maybe a few kg a month?
and PLA is about 20-25 bucks per KG
Limited-time deal: PLA 3D Printer Filament Bundle,SUNLU PLA Filament 1.75mm, Neatly Wound PLA Filament 1.75mm Bundle Multicolor, Dimensional Accuracy +/- 0.02mm, 1kg Spool(2.2lbs), Pack of 10, 10kg PLA 1.75mm https://a.co/d/e0OroPb
Buy this
It will last you a long time
perfect thank you. :) are there different textures one can buy? like squishy or flexible?
For example animal noses
you'd want to do bambu filament if you want to go full speed
about the same price
if you order the printer, add the filament in a SEPERATE order
otherwise the printer shipment could be delayed
ohhh I see. yeah that’s what I mean
The list goes on
only thing you'll need is PLA
especially if you're painting
talking about painting
do you have primer and nice acrylic paints?
and clearcoats?
Abs is a whole different thing
ABS is archaic and hardly anyone uses it anymore
stinky nasty stuff
also, if you buy bambu filaments, it'll tell you how much is on every roll and how much is left
I kinda think the smell of hot pla is nice lmao🤣🤣🤣
Yea, it's sucks
I can get those free from my school if we are talking acrylics
we are talking like Vallejo model color paints
not everyday cheap arcylic tube paints
all model hobby shops will have a large selection
yeah, I could probably get those with my school
Jesus Christ lmao
yeah that’s cool I can barely see the lines
if you want to print at crazy low layer heights like that you will want the p1p
took like 4 hours on my machine, but would probably take around 12 hours on any other printer
I’m in no rush so time is fine with me
mostly focused on quality so I’d say a wait is expected
lol I can put it on overnight right?
a 10 hour difference
you could, but depending on where it is it could be a bit noisey
if you want to save money and have other drawbacks you can get something other than the p1p
Yup
you'll get what you pay for
Guess how long this god damn thing took to print
why did you not print that in vase mode
how long was it
13 hours and 56 minutes, idk my printer likes to be autistic sometimes
how long is it supposed to take
vil do you have a file for one of the masks you want to print?
no I’m still sketching the concepts ahhh
im assuming you're proficient in blender
you'll just need to export models as .stl
and printer slicer software will handle it from there
yeah zbrush exports in stl I assume?
never used zbrush, not sure
all good I’ll check
ok yes it’s got all the good stuff
also thanks so much for the help so far guys! I really appreciate it :)
looking into the p1p now
Np
I’m definitely gonna do more research but this review says the UI is really difficult to work with https://youtu.be/2RNt_BKGwjE
Reviewing the Bambu Lab P1P that I bought late last year with their surprise announcement of this newest addition to the Bambu Lab X1 3D Printer Lineup
I originally bought 2 X1 Carbon Printers from their Kickstarter then preordered the P1P once it was announced. This machine definitely has its quirks but Speed & Print Quality aren't one of them...
this guy makes it sound like problems come up very often which concerns me
again im not too worried about speed, so I’m willing to sacrifice time for better quality
oh I see my bad

yeah other than that one video I mentioned before everyone seems to love it. you have a Bambu yourself right?
yupyup seeing the video is recent and very positive makes me feel wayyyyy better. thanks so much. might get that
I do have a bambu x1 carbon yes
