That looks like you're correct in thinking that, you'll want the first layer to not have any gaps, nor significant bumps (which would imply the nozzle was too close to the bed)
gotcha, i'll try it again and increase the z-offset slightly
Sounds like you'd want to decrease it, right? :D
Or is it inverse with the actual height of the nozzle? In that case I said nothing, I've never actually used a z offset on any print so I just assume higher number means the nozzle is higher up on the Z axis... 😅

second print. i think it got dialed in better towards the middle
It's a little hard to see, but that definitely looks a lot beter already! Can't quite gauge whether there's any sort of blobs/lines appearing on there, but it seems like at least you've gotten rid of the gaps?
