System Specs:
i5-14600KF
GIGABYTE Eagle 4070
32gb DDR5 Corsair Vengeance Ram
MSI PRO B760-P WIFI (MS-7D98)

Hello everyone, I am so stumped on an issue I’ve been having. I recently upgraded my CPU, added new RAM, and added an AIO and have been having issues. The main issue I’m having right now is with lag on my dual monitor setup.

In my main monitor I’ll have a game up, and on my second monitor I have Discord, and YouTube. The problem I’m having now is whenever I’m playing a game on my main monitor, everything on the second monitor lags.

My YouTube video lags, my Discord webcam lags, and I made sure turn OFF all Hardware-Accelerated settings. Prior to doing all upgrades, this NEVER happened. I realized the RAM I purchased was not the same matching ram I already had, so I returned it. I had BSOD issues after installing the new RAM, hence why I returned it. Now when I installed my original RAM in slot 1 & 3, my system would not boot, but the second I put the ram in slots 2 & 4, my PC booted up with no problems. I made sure XMP was enabled as well. I even went as far as putting the old CPU back in to see if that fixed the problem, but it did not.

Could my RAM/RAM slots be causing this issue? I noticed when I’m playing Apex Legends and open task Manager, my GPU usage is maxed out at 99%, and CPU is around 30-40%. When I boot up my PC, the DRAM light on the motherboard stays on for about 30 seconds to a minute. When I had the RAM installed in slots 1 & 3, the CPU light on the motherboard came on, and stayed red. Once I put the RAM back in slots 2 & 4, everything booted up normally, and all Motherboard lights turned off (the DRAM light stays on for 30 seconds to a minute, and then turns off)

I am so stumped on what could be causing this lagging issue as it NEVER happened prior to upgrading everything. Would a fresh windows 11 install help? Or is my motherboard possibly screwed in terms of RAM slots?

You are meant to put RAM in slots 2 & 4 if you only have two sticks in there.

With you swapping the RAM around in different slots, the RAM might just be retraining itself and that is why it takes as long as it does as if it were the first boot. Does it take that long each time you do a restart or only after the initial post after you moved the RAM?

Ahhh @rustic vine coming to my rescue once again! Let’s have this discussion and figure it out bro

#

I attempted that before returning the be RAM kit, as the RAM kit I ordered was not the exact same as what I already have in the PC. The same exact RAM gets delivered today! I forget what settings I have setup with the second monitor, but I know I didn’t change anything regarding display settings after doing all the upgrades

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

I’ll try it again today to see if it replicates the issues with just one monitor, but how likely is it a monitor issue rather than a windows issue? And yes the new, proper ram kit comes today that I will install!

#

Someone also recommended updating the ME firmware as well to make sure the new CPU is fully functional, so I’ll do that as well

rustic vine
rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

I believe BIOS is the first version that came out with the motherboard, so the bios is on the first ever firmware for my motherboard

rustic vine
#

You can also see BIOS info in Windows System Information.

karmic fjord
#

Yeah I’ll access bios right now, I should also mention that my friends in discord can also see the lag of my camera on their end @rustic vine

#

Was on a different BIOS version that what you sent in those screenshots, so I just updated to that version in the screenshot

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

7D98vA0

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

Also does the same lag when its on my main monitor as well, just confirmed

rustic vine
#

Okay. Well there are newer versions to the BIOS than A4, that made some other changes.

Just so I am clear, what exactly is the lag that you are talking about?

Does the image skip?

#

There were also 3 updates to the ME that go along with those BIOS changes.

karmic fjord
#

Yeah si basically its like the frame rate of the camera drops, and itll pause, skip, or just delay in my movements

#

I noticed its not only discord, edge slows down as well, the cameras actual software has the same lag as well

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

its hard to describe

#

no its normal video playback, no stream

rustic vine
#

You also just said that you experience these issues with your "good" monitor when it is the only one that is plugged in?

karmic fjord
#

yes

rustic vine
#

I would definitely update the BIOS to the latest version, because it looks like there were some specific changes that were addressed:

karmic fjord
#

Does updating the BIOS back and forth affect anything, or is it safe to do?

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

Ahh got it, okay let me update and come back to you

rustic vine
#

Do the latest ME update too, if you haven't already.

#

ME_16.1.30.2361

#

This was your board right?

#

Matches what you listed above.

karmic fjord
#

Yeah thats it!

rustic vine
#

Thats it, meaning no lag now?

karmic fjord
#

No i mean thats it, thats my motherboard

rustic vine
#

Lol, the ! made it sound like you were excited it was fixed.

#

Looks like there was also a recent chipset driver update.

karmic fjord
rustic vine
#

Version Release Date

karmic fjord
#

Looks like my ME version is up to date already

rustic vine
#

Looks like.

karmic fjord
#

Checking for lag

#

Laggin like a mofo still

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

ill send a screenshot of Task Manager for when im using the main monitor, and on the second monitor

rustic vine
#

Sure, but still, what about the chipset driver?

karmic fjord
#

Lemme check

#

chipset driver version matches the one you sent

rustic vine
#

Okay, you must have already done that too.

karmic fjord
#

stats when apex is open on main monitor

#

stats when on secon monitor with apex open as well

rustic vine
#

You can try turning off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, or turning it on depending what it is currently set to.

karmic fjord
#

I have that set to off as i was told that can cause a lot of lag for secondary tasks running while gaming

#

Im telling you dude, it is the STRANGEST issue that makes no sense

rustic vine
#

It can be weird in either direction.

karmic fjord
#

I think we've ruled out that its NOT a hardware issue, correct?

rustic vine
#

The support guys for my monitor wanted me to RMA my OLED monitor because HDR wasn't working on YouTube, but it turned out all I had to do was enable hardware accel in Chrome, and BOOM it worked just fine. I would have had to pay for shipping and be out a monitor for weeks because they did not want to help me diagnose.

#

My point is, it could be anything, but the fact that stuff is working would lead me to think it could be software related or some setting that needs to be tweaked.

karmic fjord
#

Okay good. I was concerned that possibly my ram, or cpu slots on my motherboard got messed up somehow while installing them

#

So I was preparing myself to purchase a whole new motherboard just in case lol

rustic vine
#

Can't rule anything out at this stage, but there are some easier things to look at.

karmic fjord
#

What about a factory reset?

#

Oh i also ran SFC/scannow, and came back with no issues

rustic vine
#

If you are going to do a factory reset, you might as well do a completely fresh install of windows with the USB installer program from their site.

karmic fjord
#

I have never done that before

rustic vine
#

How did you install windows before?

karmic fjord
#

This was a pre-built. I've had it for about a year, just been upgrading as i go along

#

I made sure to buy a pre-built with no proprietary parts so i can upgrade'

#

ABS Stratos

rustic vine
#

Just in case it would be needed, do you have the Windows Activation Key that might have come with that build?

karmic fjord
#

Uhhh I dont think it came with one

#

is there a place i can find it within windows?

rustic vine
#

It might have been on a card or piece of paper with the package.

karmic fjord
#

definitely was not lol, i emptied the box when i got it to make sure

#

In settings, it says it is activated with a digital license linked to my microsoft account

rustic vine
#

Okay, it might not be needed, but wanted you to have it if you do a fresh install and don't want to see the water mark.

karmic fjord
#

Think i was able to get it in CMD

rustic vine
#

Cool, note it just for future reference.

#

There is also ways to test your RAM to see if any errors are spit out.

karmic fjord
#

If i do it this way, will windows get all the proper drivers and everything needed for me, or do i have to get all of that stuff?

rustic vine
#

After a full reinstall the only driver should be what windows auto detects for you, which aren't always the latest. That would mean doing manual updates from the MB website and NVIDIA.

#

It should get you up and running, but outdated.

karmic fjord
#

and would you be willing to help me get everything needed? I've never done a fresh install of windows lol

rustic vine
#

I wouldn't mind helping walk you through it, but also there are TONS of videos out there for reference.

If you watch that video that I already posted, he skips past a part where you select what drive you want windows to be installed on because there was only a single drive to pick. You have many.

karmic fjord
#

Yeah, i think my main drive is what ill keep it on

rustic vine
#

Okay, then when you get to the windows installer it would look something like this:

#

The actual labels would be different, but the idea being the drive that windows is installed on would have various partitions. You can delete these partitions from this stage of the install and essentially wipe the drive.

You do not want parts of the old install on there while installing a fresh one.

karmic fjord
#

Alright, looks like this is what were doing

#

So when i get to that stage, i click on the drive that had old windows on it, and click delete to clear it out?

rustic vine
#

Don't have to yet, but the fact that you have had multiple different parts over the years, and have never done a fresh install could mean what I said earlier about conflicting drivers from old parts.

#

You can try the memory test first to see if maybe it is a memory issue. You might also want to go through your boot drive files to see if there is anything you want to save, because they would be deleted.

karmic fjord
#

I ran the ram test and it came back clear

#

boot drive files?

rustic vine
#

No, like do you have any documents, photos, or projects saved on that drive that you would not want to lose?

karmic fjord
#

ohhh, no not really lol

rustic vine
#

Alright, one thing that might also help you is opening Disk Management and see what disk # is assigned to your boot drive. You can just delete the partitions that match that # if you do want to reinstall windows.

karmic fjord
#

how do i see that? I have disk management open

rustic vine
#

I do want to stress that this all could just be a waste of time, and not resolve the underlying issue, but starting fresh would get ride of any programs you aren't running anymore and just start clean.

#

Look for the one that has C drive.

karmic fjord
#

Yeah i know, scary but i dont know what else to do

rustic vine
#

I might recommend doing this anyway, because of the parts change, but we can try Googling the software having issues and see if others found solutions.

#

Did you toggle that hardware setting back on, and do a reset?

karmic fjord
#

Yes, did not fix the issue

rustic vine
#

Solution 2: Turn Off Hardware Acceleration
Another way to fix Discord lagging issue is turning off Hardware Acceleration. You can follow the steps below.

Step 1: Run Discord and go to Settings.

Step 2: Click Appearance from the left pane and toggle off the switch button of Hardware Acceleration.

Step 3: In the pop-up window, click Okay to confirm the operation. Then restart your Discord to see if Discord lagging issue is fixed.

karmic fjord
#

Did that last night, no luck

rustic vine
#

Can you do a quick list of all the programs and the problem you are seeing with them, like:

Discord - Laggy Video, but audio is fine.
YouTube (Edge) - Laggy video play back.

For example.

karmic fjord
#

Those are really it. I only keep those open while gaming with friends. Edge becomes supr laggy, typing is at least 1 second delayed, friend say i have like a 2-4 second delay in my camera, and any other software that uses my camera lags as well

rustic vine
#

The whole PC slows down, it isn't just the video on the second monitor? What about the game you are playing, I did not hear any mention of that being an issue.

karmic fjord
#

No, game runs buttery smooth

rustic vine
#

Is it only when the game is running? What happens if you were to watch a video or be on discord without a game?

karmic fjord
#

Unless i swap over to the secon monitor to do something, then the performance drops, but thats normal I believe

#

Did that before all the upgrades anyways so

rustic vine
#

Since you said that the issues occur when a single monitor is running, what happens if you try to use those programs when a game is not running?

karmic fjord
#

totally fine i believe

rustic vine
#

So the issue only starts when a game is running?

karmic fjord
#

Nope i lied, just tested, even with no game running it does it

rustic vine
#

Which thing?

karmic fjord
#

camera lag mainly

rustic vine
#

What about watch a YouTube video?

karmic fjord
#

youtube seems fine actually

rustic vine
#

So we are narrowing down the issue to being just Discord video, and nothing else?

karmic fjord
#

Any software that uses my camera. Discord, OBS, etc etc

#

I un-installed and re-installed discord last night but did not fix the issue

rustic vine
#

When the issues occur you are saying it actually causes the software to fail, and even typing is affected, not just the camera having delays?

karmic fjord
#

software doesnt fail, but anything running on the second monitor becomes laggy, and performance drops

rustic vine
#

How is the 2nd monitor connected? HDMI or DP?

karmic fjord
#

Both monitors connected via DP

rustic vine
#

Just for laughs, can you try a different DP port on the GPU?

#

Should be 3 DP and 1 HDMI on the latest NVIDIA, right?

karmic fjord
#

Uhh i think theres only 2 on this 4070, lemme check

#

oh wait theres is 3 lmaaoooooooo

rustic vine
#

After that, we can try:

THE SOLUTION I FOUND : Finally it seems I've found a solution... It simply consist of disabling windows transparency (Right Click on the desktop > Personalize > Window color > Uncheck "Enable transparency" > Save Changes).

Then I can immediately note the lag is gone !
Even after a reboot, no problem so far.

https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/video-lag-on-second-monitor.2824602/

#

@karmic fjord Either thing work?

karmic fjord
#

checking now. I have my friend in discord right now and have my camera up. they say the delay is gone, but there is still a stutter

rustic vine
#

You turn off transparency?

karmic fjord
#

checking now

#

still have the stutter, but delay is gone

rustic vine
#

More things to try:

If anyone stumbles across this, i solved it by disabling windows game mode, and norton game optimizer

karmic fjord
#

Just that stutteer now. Buddy said it could be cause my camera is set to 4k, and discord might not like that

rustic vine
#

That could be. Do you pay for their premium?

karmic fjord
#

No

rustic vine
#

Or does your friend? I don't think they can even watch in 4k, if they don't.

karmic fjord
#

But that wouldnt make sense cause the stutter happens in the camera software as well

rustic vine
#

Do you run the software separate from Discord?

karmic fjord
#

I keep it open to adjust camera settings if needed

rustic vine
#

I do not stream, so I actually have no idea about this.

Does the software show an image of the camera as well?

karmic fjord
#

no it does not, but im going to change the res to 1080p and see'

rustic vine
#

Good start.

karmic fjord
#

hmm, seem s okay now, still hae that stutter, but at least theres no lag

#

not buttery smooth how it used to be though

#

I noticed my speakers were making a humming, staticy noise, so I unplugged them, thoughts?

#

I had them plugged into this port on my PC

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

Top

rustic vine
#

Try the motherboard one.

karmic fjord
#

Which one is it?

rustic vine
#

Should be bottom midde, green.

karmic fjord
#

Doesn’t show up in windows when plugged into the green one

rustic vine
#

Does the cable from the speakers have a green plug? Mine does.

#

The little plastic piece that plugs into the PC.

karmic fjord
#

rustic vine
#

If they are something like razer speaker, that might just be branding, I was talking about the part you were holding.

karmic fjord
#

These are creative pebbbles

rustic vine
#

By not appear in windows, you mean if you go to the task bar to choose an output, they don't appear?

karmic fjord
#

Nevermind i fixed it lolol

#

the speaker thing\

rustic vine
#

Cool, I was about to start charing you for troubleshooting services.

karmic fjord
#

na were good there dude LMAOO

#

Just gotta fix this stuttering

rustic vine
#

I posted a video with settings to try changing.

karmic fjord
#

watching now!

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

going to restart now

#

i think i found the setting causing it to lag'

#

but what still confuses me, is why this issue is showing up now AFTER the upgrades, but i never had the issue before upgrading

rustic vine
#

What was the specific setting?

karmic fjord
#

theres 2 hardware accelerated settings in discord, one in voice and video, and one in advanced settings

#

both are off now

rustic vine
#

Ahhh, can't do anything about dumb software design. When I ask you if you disabled something I expect you to know EVERYTHING about the software and to check under the cushions for all the toggles.

karmic fjord
#

Yeah thats so weird discord has two seperate hardware accelerated settings lmao

#

i am noticing some slight fps loss, but i mean cant win everything lol

rustic vine
#

Loss or significate drops?

#

Loss would be because you are running other software and taking up resources.

karmic fjord
#

uhhh, well with everything i normally have open, maybe like a 30 fps loss?

rustic vine
#

Normally from what to what?

karmic fjord
#

i normally get around 200 in apex firing range, but now im getting like 150-180

#

certain areas it goes back up, could just be a hiccup

rustic vine
#

I don't stream and have OBS open, so I can't help you there, but as long as it is a stable FPS, then that is all you can ask for.

karmic fjord
#

yeah exactly lol

rustic vine
#

What I would feel is something like 180 to 30 for split seconds.

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

im going to try! just baffles me how so many issues came up after a CPU upgrade lol

rustic vine
#

To be fair, it probably didn't help you were running an outdated BIOS, but it is fascinating how the different CPUs handle instructions.

karmic fjord
#

whats even weirder

#

for shits and giggles, i put back the old cpu, and the issues remained

rustic vine
#

Before all this?

karmic fjord
#

did that last night at like 1am lol

#

yeah, before our troubleshooting today

rustic vine
#

That might have just been a Discord update that ran in the background that borked things.

karmic fjord
#

thats a very good possibility

rustic vine
#

I am going to take a nap after doing a few of these.

karmic fjord
#

i appreciate all the help dude, seriosuly. Although i have a weird feeling this isnt over, everything seems okay so far lmao

rustic vine
#

It is a miracle that people manage to turn rocks and metal into something that can display an image. The fact the whole thing doesn't just catch on fire is fantastic.

karmic fjord
#

well said my friend, well said

rustic vine
#

But you are welcome, enjoy the gaming.

karmic fjord
#

'now time for a case swap 🙂

karmic fjord
#

NZXT H7 FLOW FOR THE WIN

rustic vine
#

Enjoy that upgrade. Probably better cable management.

karmic fjord
#

Thank you friend, if any issues come up, you'll hear frome me

karmic fjord
#

Problem @rustic vine, and not with the case swap. The new Ram came, I installed it and set XMP profile to enable, and tried to boot, and got a Memory Ocerclocking fail

#

Also my CPUs Vcore is at 1.074v

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

How do I do that?

rustic vine
rustic vine
# karmic fjord How do I do that?

You could also try just resetting all BIOS settings back to default and exit. See if the system will post and if it does, go back into the BIOS to enable XMP.

karmic fjord
#

Way ahead of you. Went ahead and reset to default, loaded in just fine. Went back to BIOS and set XMP, and got that memory overclock fail

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

I’m building my exact spec on PC part picker to see if there’s any incompatibility issues

rustic vine
rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

Yeah I double checked and all the ram has the same model number

#

Might just have to do 2 32gb sticks

rustic vine
karmic fjord
#

Sorry for the late reply @rustic vine, here’s the model number, I’m going to check right now

#

CMH32GX5M2D6000C36

#

Looks like it is supported

rustic vine
# karmic fjord Sorry for the late reply <@452875523308388353>, here’s the model number, I’m goi...

I am going to sleep, but I wanted to explain that it is not entirely supported. See at the bottom where it shows 1|2|4, and the check marks next to it are only the first two? That means 1 stick and 2 sticks are supported, but not all 4.

If you really wanted to populate all the slots, then you would need to find a kit that shows a check box in that 3rd slot, and make sure the Size (single stick) & Supported Speed columns meet your requirements.

#

Not sure what you are doing with all that RAM, but it seems very excessive if all you were going to be doing was gaming and streaming.
