Hi, I’m planning on building a new PC with the B650M PROJECT ZERO motherboard, on the specifications website it says it supports:

  • AMD Ryzen™ 8000/ 7000 Series Desktop Processors Socket AM5

I am planning on getting a Ryzen 9 7900X3D, which is an AM5 socket CPU, but on the specifications it only mentions 8000/7000 CPUs. Does this mean it’s not compatible?

It is compatible.

Correct, that means the earliest version of that BIOS is capable of working with that CPU, so it doesn’t matter what version is actually installed when it arrives because it can only be newer than the first one, or the first one itself.

You won’t run into a situation, like with other boards, where you have to update the bios before the CPU will run.

However, there were a lot of memory compatibility and security patch updates, so I would recommend updating the BIOS at some point. Just be careful because if done incorrectly, interrupting the BIOS update can brick the MB.

The process itself is simple enough, and there are many guides that can tell you exactly what to do with your specific model of MB.

Just don’t do it during a lightning storm or were your power can go out because stopping the process in the middle can mean the MB won’t work anymore. You also do not want to shut down, restart, or switch off the system while in the middle of the update.

It can be normal for it to finish the installation and do a couple of restarts in its own.
