Hi friends 😄
having some issues swapping my ssd in my laptop to something with more storage. its quite strange because its recognized just fine in the bios when I have it installed into the laptop, but when I run the windows installer, it cant see the drive! I can plug it into an external ssd reader and its visible when I have the stock ssd in.

it appears like this in windows disc management .

Am i being a durp and missing something obvious?

#

i am currently on this version of the bios, and I see there is now a "30E", but that doesnt seem to include any mention to ssd compatability or anything that would relate to it 🧐 . i will keep updating this thread as I find more clues

So not quite sure what to make of this. Drive is recognized when in an enclosure. Drive is recognized in bios. Drive is recognized when engaged in windows while other SSD is installed. However, is not able to be read when installed into m.2 slot. This is fucking bizarre o_O

During the windows installer

#

Shift + f10

#

Diskpart

#

List disk

#

Diskpart will left disks with a number

#

Sel disk numberofdiskhere

#

Clean

#

Exit the CMD window

#

And refresh the drive selection window

#

The issue here. Is that you formatted the drive as MBR instead of gpt

#

Systems using uefi boot mode and boot from CSM/MBR media

elfin wharf
#

It doesnt recognise it, even as gpt

#

it seems like I need to get the corresponding intel RST VMD driver, but not sure where to get it as it seems like it can be vendor specific

#

Any idea where I can snag that @rotund plume ?

#

It is not recognized in diskpark when I use list disk, but it is recognized in bios, which leads me to believe this is a windows driver issue

#

pretty sure that if I get the intel rst vmd driver, it will fix me right up

elfin wharf
#

Dont think I have the ability to disable rapid storage

#

it just lists the ssd when I select that in bios

rotund plume
#

What is the output of list disk?

elfin wharf
#

just lists the usb drive thats connected as the windows installation media\

rotund plume
#

Show me

elfin wharf
#

I honestly cant atm without swapping the drive around, but it says Disk 0 : 28gb lexar

rotund plume
#

Disable rst in the bios

elfin wharf
#

Dont think that an option on the cyborg 15

rotund plume
#

If diskpart is not seeing the drive. Then the windows installer wont

elfin wharf
#

well diskpark is still a component of windows

rotund plume
#

Indeed

elfin wharf
#

without the rst driver, it wont be able to read it via m2 connection

rotund plume
elfin wharf
#

yup, thats it connected via my m2 enclosure

rotund plume
#

Is the drive installed in the machine?

elfin wharf
#

not in that image, in that image its connected via m2 enclosure

rotund plume
#

Is the drive installed in the machine?

elfin wharf
#

currently, no

#

in that image, it is installed in an external m2 enclosure

rotund plume
#

Install the drive in the machine

#

You can't install windows to a usb drive

elfin wharf
#

yes, i know

#

i was trying to see if it could read it

#

...

rotund plume
#

The drive was being read

elfin wharf
#

oh i misinterpreted

#

yes, the enclosure was being read, thats what i was trying to see

rotund plume
#

Your issue was the drive was formatted in the wrong method

elfin wharf
#

no

#

well yes

#

but then i swapped to gpt

#

same issue

rotund plume
#

But the drive is in a usb enclosure

#

You can't install windows to an external drive

elfin wharf
#

not when i installed it back in the machine after swapping it to gpt

#

i havent just tried the usb enclosure dude

#

i tried the usb enclosure to see if it could read

rotund plume
#

So the drive is installed in the machine?

elfin wharf
#

not at this second, because im trying to find the driver to put on the usb to actually proceed with the installation

#

but while the drive was installed in the machine, i have had the same issues

rotund plume
#

You don't need a driver

elfin wharf
#

i do at work, plenty of times

#

i had three cases today

#

one sec

rotund plume
#

Not for nvme drives

elfin wharf
#

Yes for nvme drives

rotund plume
#

Nope

elfin wharf
#

I mean literally today at best buy

rotund plume
#

That means irst is enabled in the bios

elfin wharf
#

This happened to me lol

#

Well okay, give me a second and il swap it around

rotund plume
#

Machines set in standard ahci mode don't need drivers to detect drives

elfin wharf
#

Kk going to bios

#

Disable secure boot yea?

rotund plume
#

No?

elfin wharf
#

Oh, KK swapping back

rotund plume
#

Need to nuke rst

#

Or. Look for enable vmd driver

#

Or something related to vmd driver

elfin wharf
#

Kk

#

Hmm not seeing that

#

Here's advanced again

#

Not seeing any toggles for VMD or rst

#

Drive is recognized in bios at the moment though

rotund plume
#

At the top

elfin wharf
#

It's greyed D:

rotund plume
#

What's in boot?

#

Show me main too

elfin wharf
#

This is fucking strange right

#

I know the rst advice is strange but it lines up with my procedures at work as well

#

Whole bunch of M2 drives won't let us install windows until we load those drivers

#

Lemme know what you think. Sorry if this is annoying as fuck lol

rotund plume
#

RIGHT-SHIFT + RIGHT-CTRL + LEFT-ALT + F2

#

See if that gives your more options in the bios

elfin wharf
#

Holy fuck

rotund plume
#

I guess it did

elfin wharf
#

Disable csm now?

rotund plume
#

You are still running in csm mode?

elfin wharf
#

Couldn't disable before

rotund plume
#

Ok. I would check to see if you can disable vmd/irst too

elfin wharf
#

Can't touch vmd still

rotund plume
#

This is odd af

elfin wharf
#

Well I thank you for the help. I'm closer at least. Gotta crash now but this will haunt my dreams. If you have any solutions, I will try them before I even eat breakfast in the morning. Honestly, thank you for the assistance

rotund plume
#

No worries

elfin wharf
#

Kk

#

Did it

#

@rotund plume the driver worked lol

#

I didn't wanna argue because there is zero doubt, you're much more educated then I am, but I have to do this a fuck-ton at work and I thought it was weird as shit too loo

#

Holy fuck I can finally go to sleep in peace 💤

rotund plume
#

Was no arguement friendo!

#

Normally. You can disable vmd. And ignore it

#

Why you can't, I don't know why
