#Mouse Pad Stopped Working, Device Manager not Showing Mousepad

Hey
Have a fairly old msi laptop, from 2019. It very recently, as in the last 2 days, has had issues with the mouse pad not working until
computer restarted or I pligged a mouse in. It would then work for a little bit before going back to problems.

Just recently however, I checked device manager and it no longer shows a touchpad there. My mouse is shown in the pointing options sub category of drivers, but not the mouse pad.

Any help?

#

Update.....I found it by selecting show hidden items, but it gives this error code whenever zi try doing anything withe the drivers.....

No error message, no succses message, nothing.

unkempt kettle
# gray swallow Nothing, absolutly nothing.

You click to execute the install and nothing pops up that will allow you to know the install has started? Have you tried uninstalling the driver and letting windows try to automatically reinstall the driver for you?

Direct you to where?

gray swallow
#

I could show you exactly what happends

unkempt kettle
#

Sure.

gray swallow
#

happens*

unkempt kettle
#

I don't have my headset, you can just go live.

gray swallow
#

Sounds good

#

not sure what to do with these files, these are the downloads

unkempt kettle
#

Stay on the screen with the file names.

#

The bottom one is the executable that will let you install the driver.

gray swallow
#

Alright, so just open it?

unkempt kettle
#

Yep

gray swallow
#

admin?

unkempt kettle
#

Wouldn't hurt.

gray swallow
#

Sounds good

#

nothing haha

unkempt kettle
#

Got it, so no indication that it starts the install from that point.

#

What is the model # for that laptop?

gray swallow
#

MSI GV- 62 8RE

unkempt kettle
#

Maybe it is different because it is a touchpad, or maybe this brand does something different, but those instructions are located under the touchpad driver.

gray swallow
#

This was the guide I mentiod prevously haha,

#

There is no file in teh fodler named * synpd.inf

unkempt kettle
#

Can you show me the file names again?

#

Locate three .inf files (to see the file extension, go to “View” and enable the
“File name extension” option).

#

Right-click the .inf file and click “Install”

gray swallow
#

which of the three inf files?

#

In the guide it is the shortest named one, as such i choose the shortest named one to try prevously, however the result was similar to when we trued launcing the executable

unkempt kettle
#

Can you split your screen to have both discord and the file thing showing, so you do not have to go between them?

gray swallow
#

for refrence 🙂

#

Sorry abt that

unkempt kettle
#

Locate the file named “SynPD.inf” (to see the file extension, go to “View” and
enable the “File name extension” option).

#

It is the 6th one from the bottom.

gray swallow
#

That is the one I tried before, should I try agian?

unkempt kettle
#

Show me how you did it.

gray swallow
#

Like that

unkempt kettle
#

Refresh the driver page.

#

Does it show up in the broken drivers still?

gray swallow
#

Doesnt show up at all

#

I can restart real quick

unkempt kettle
#

Did it show up under the mouse thing before, it just said the driver was broken?

gray swallow
#

Yes,...

#

Showed this

unkempt kettle
#

It doesn't appear under the USB devices with a caution icon?

gray swallow
#

Not sure what that is, I just disabled this morning.

unkempt kettle
#

Sometimes if the device cannot determine what a device is it will show in the drivers as unknown.

#

I do not know if that is the touchpad or not.

gray swallow
#

I don't think so, agian the touchpad has issues before I messed with that

unkempt kettle
#

How sure are you that driver you are installing is the EXACT model laptop that you have?

gray swallow
#

99.99%

#

It is what the Model sticker says

unkempt kettle
#

Got it. Although it has its own issues. Have you tried using MSI Center to auto detect drivers and have that try to install it?

gray swallow
#

No

#

It be part of a serois of problems I have had, seroius degredation of performance and bsod

#

bsods happening*

#

I will go ahead and try retstarting, Ill join back as sson as it is up

#

Shows up now, this is what it has looked like before

#

Hmmm havn't seen that message

unkempt kettle
#

Okay, I did not see it under the mouse group before, but I saw the error it was spitting out.

#

That appears to just be the one that Windows installs, not the one you want. Go to update driver again.

#

Browse my computer for the files, incase you did not try it that way.

gray swallow
#

Should I try it? Or would it likely reset the issue

unkempt kettle
#

Hit okay.

#

Next, we can see if the specific file appears after.

#

Close that.

#

Couldn't hurt to restart, but I think it will just go back to what we have already seen.

#

It says the right driver # is installed.

#

Version 19.5.31.1

gray swallow
#

Does that mean it was in fact the right webiste/model number?

unkempt kettle
#

It means the driver it is detecting is the same one as the one from the site.

gray swallow
#

I know this computer has an outdated BIOS, do you think that might help?

#

just have been to worried about what I ma doing to try so far

unkempt kettle
#

What bios does it have?

gray swallow
#

Not sure how to see, but the date on the mobo is from 2018, the bios on the website is 2019, and this laptop has only gone bewteen me and my friend since then, with neither of us performing an update. However, it did go for an rma in 2020, so maybe they did it then? Unlikley tho, the rma was for the battery

unkempt kettle
#

You can't rule it out, but the driver for the touchpad is from 2018-08-08.

gray swallow
#

Do you by any chance know, will installing the same bios on top of the same bios cause issues?

unkempt kettle
#

I have never specifically tried, I just know anytime you try to update the bios you risk killing the system if it fails part way through, so you should only do it when there are issues.

#

You can check what bios version you have and decide from there.

gray swallow
#

How is that checked

#

Is that something that has to be done from boot up menu... 😦

#

That shi is scary

unkempt kettle
#

You can go into the bios to check, but it can probably also be seen from system information.

gray swallow
#

Alright, you are right

#

It is the 2018 BIOS. Should I upgrade?

unkempt kettle
#

That is definitely one of those things that you have to decide for yourself on if you think you can do the update, but also it is a standard troubleshooting step when stuff is not working properly.

gray swallow
#

Alright. I will go ahead and try that, Ill get back on what happens.

#

Thanks alot for your help, truly apreciate it
