#4090 Gaming Trio won't work with 12VHPWR cable - only works with the PCIE adapter cable.

I have a 13900k, MSI Z790 Godlike, and MSI Gaming Trio 4090.... when I connect my 4090 to PSU with 12VHPWR cable I get d6 error code on the motherboard and the system won't boot. I've tried multiple power supplies and 12VHPWR cables so the problem must be with the GPU itself. I think it isn't properly reading the sensor pins but I'm not sure. When I use the included adapter cable and plug into the normal PCIE ports on the PSU it works fine.
