Please tell me that the Rinocertone is worth the effort, because the Progetto 54 is quite literally the least fun tank that I've played thus far. I still have 150K+ XP to go before moving on to the IX, which looks to be a a continuation of this rubbish. How is this tank meant to be played so that it can make a meaningful contribution to the team?

Not going to lie.
The Italian MTs and HTs are on the high skill ceiling side of TT tanks. Also the ones that are in desperate need of positive buffs.
Honestly it’s worth just finishing the grind and buying the tank at a discount but not worth playing once your done till something is done to them
I didn't mind the medium tanks, but I can't seem to find my place in the fight with the heavy. I haven't unlocked the upgraded gun yet, so maybe the pen will help, but I find that the armor doesn't really stand up to a lot the same tier tanks, and certainly not against 9s and 10s. I tried side-scraping and a Sturmpanzer laughed and then took a healthy chunk out of my hitpoints.
It feels so wrong, but I've been sitting back and playing early game like a TD, and then more like a flanking medium once the enemy numbers have been thinned or 1-2 enemies have been singled out, and it's more tolerable.
Rinoceronte struggles playing like a true heavy, but you dont want to play like a td either.
Let your clip fully load and only ever shoot before a full reload if it gurantees a kill or you know you will not be in a fight for a while.
Dont be the first tank around a corner, the rinos hull armor is not strong, play behind/close to your frontal brawling heavies and support them, that is the rinos role, a support heavy.
When engaging with your team you have to make educated decisions with autoreloaders like the rino, do you unload your full clip? Or do you single fire and let your shells come back. Look at your friendly tanks and the enemy tanks, do you need to keep your dpm up? Or do you need to use all 3 shells to kill a tank or even maybe 2, go for kills in the rino if you want to support your team as much as possible.
Never unload your clips in a 1v1, even though it will be VERY tempting, single fire, if you need to eat a shot to let your shell reload, then do that, then fire all 3 shells once the enemy tank is within your clips damage to kill. A good player will see you dump all 3 shells and push you and easily put 2/4 shells into you while your on that first shells long reload.
Your turret armor is useable, it can bounce 326 apcr/340Heat when above the enemy, try and make that the case most engagements and watch out for that little pyramid on top the gun, its an easy shot if you domt wiggle and move in-between shots.
Your standard rounds are very good, with fantastic shell velocity, I personally reccomend only using heat when you know you will be within close range as that shell velocity is awful and swapping shells will ofcourse require a full reload of all 3 shells
Overall the rino is a hard tank to make work, but feels very rewarding to pilot correctly and can win games with it being an autoreloader, which can make the tank feel very flexible..... but also very inflexible if you are not reserved with your shell usage.
Hope this helps 🙂
