Im using the default wifi drive for linux mint and it unable to connect to 5ghz for some reasson, can someone tell me an alternative external wifi drive to use that is stable? rn Im using rtw88_8821ce

Ohhh.. I have one like this too. If it's similar enough to mine it gets stuck in a power saving mode. Disconnect the power and hold down the power button for 30 seconds then turn the computer on again.

Take out the charger and battery. You wanna drain the power out of it.

vagrant sonnet
#

I cant do it then

opaque cape
#

Oh.. its one of those. One sec.

#

What model is your laptop?

vagrant sonnet
opaque cape
#

Okay. Disconnect the charger. Power the laptop off completely. Then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then connect the charger and turn it on again.

vagrant sonnet
#

I search it up and it said that the driver rtw88_8821ce linux come with is terrible at supporting 5ghz

#

so Im thinking of switching into another wifi driver but the one I found are either too old or unstable

#

but Ill try ur methot

opaque cape
#

So its sometimes because the wifi is stuck in power saving mode. Doing this forces the motherboard to put it back into a default state.

#

It is at least good to check.

vagrant sonnet
#

Alr I did what u said, now well see if its woek

#

Nope

#

Did not work sadly

opaque cape
#

^ I would try that.

vagrant sonnet
#

1 last thing to ask for any dev or support

vagrant sonnet
# vagrant sonnet

Do this work even when I already have a wifi driver? Even if it suck

vagrant sonnet
#

The usb thing chat gpt said will not work

winter rock
#

it's using the right driver

#

open settings> Network item

#

then show the tab for 'wireless'

vagrant sonnet
#

oh wait

#

Im connected to 5ghz rn

#

but its capped at 54mb/s

winter rock
#

the wireless tab should show a thing for radio channel

#

or BAND, rather

vagrant sonnet
#

k

vagrant sonnet
winter rock
#

ok that

#

delete that pic

#

you can test your signal efficiency with a CLI program called wavemon

#

it said good signal, not excellent

winter rock
#

terminal or software manager

vagrant sonnet
#

anyways I have wavemon

#

click launch but nothing happen tho

winter rock
#

it's terminal

vagrant sonnet
#

oh

winter rock
#

wavemon

vagrant sonnet
#

alr

winter rock
#

open second terminal tab

vagrant sonnet
#

do I send pic or u want me to tell you?

winter rock
#

show exact result of cat /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

vagrant sonnet
#

wifi powersave = 2

winter rock
#

ok, that's good

vagrant sonnet
#

cat /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
[connection]
wifi.powersave = 2

#

wavemon said rx and tx rate both is 54mb/s which is what Im trying to fix

#

freq 5220

#

MHz

winter rock
#

ok

vagrant sonnet
#

is this a normal issue?

18:11:10 up 17 min, 1 user, load average: 0.59, 0.91, 0.73

winter rock
#

ok quite recent

#

just checking if rebooted since altering powersave value from 3

vagrant sonnet
winter rock
#

yeah and you rebooted since

vagrant sonnet
#

xD lwk just trying everything to remove the limit cap

winter rock
#

well that's as far as I know. you can walk around with laptop and see if wavemon picks up better signal

vagrant sonnet
#

at 3MB/s gonna take me 10381284 years to dowload things I need so

vagrant sonnet
#

also is there anyways to contact like some developer

winter rock
#

idk. still to determine if it's radio interference/hardware

vagrant sonnet
#

well chat gpt said about smt legacy legacy 802.11a smt

winter rock
#

remove any 5 Ghz appliances if any from the vicinity

vagrant sonnet
#

sound like hardware to me

vagrant sonnet
#

Im home alone rn and nothing eles is using 5ghz

#

exept my tv use ethernet cable

winter rock
#

if u put laptop 3 feet from router, antenna perpendicular, check wavemon and run a practical test

vagrant sonnet
#

K

#

21.4
Mbps dowload

#

25.6
Mbps

#

sitting next to rotours rn

#

wavemon signal streght is 100

#

signal lv is -28dbm

winter rock
#

jitter low?

#

in the website results

vagrant sonnet
#

jitter 1

winter rock
#

ok

vagrant sonnet
#

Tx is the rate the device sends data to the Access Point (AP), while Rx is the rate the AP sends data to the device.

winter rock
#

what is your ISP plan that you're paying for? its advertised maximum d/l speed

vagrant sonnet
winter rock
#

hmm

vagrant sonnet
#

now I can only reach 25 megabits per seccond in linux

#

before I use window

#

but base on what wavemon telling, I think is about the harddrive that is limiting the speed

winter rock
#

perhaps @last sparrow may know about this similar issues

vagrant sonnet
#

at this speed, I can barely dowload anything

last sparrow
#

Are you using kernel modules or ones from morrownr?

vagrant sonnet
#

Im using the default linux mint install with

#

I dont know if its the one from morrownr that linux come with either

winter rock
#

negotiated link speed states 54 Mb/s in linux network GUI

vagrant sonnet
#

recive rate and transmit wave both at 54.0mbit/s

last sparrow
vagrant sonnet
#

k, I will try

#

but if I install this, will it clash with the current wifi driver?

last sparrow
#

If you follow the instructions, it won't

vagrant sonnet
#

k

winter rock
#

The maximum practical real-world speed of 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) generally ranges between 400 Mbps and 700 Mbps. While theoretical speeds can exceed 1 Gbps (1300 Mbps or higher), practical throughput is reduced by Wi-Fi overhead, distance, and interference.

last sparrow
#

I think Larry Finger mentioned issues with HP and Lenovos with RTL8821ce that are likely fixed with that github

winter rock
#

5 GHz Requirement: These speeds require a clean, 80 MHz channel in the 5 GHz band.

#

i presume that means 80 Mhz channel width

#

something to review in the router setup page perhaps

vagrant sonnet
vagrant sonnet
#

specifely [ 246.246601] wlo1: required MCSes not supported, disabling HT

vagrant sonnet
#

well now that we know High Throughput is disable because MCS is failed

#

thats may explain why the wifi is limit at 54mb/s

#

plus PCIe bus error rxerr

vagrant sonnet
#

also is it weird that even the recive and transmit is at 54mb/s which is 6MB/s but I only get around 2MB/s

#

even signal streght is at max

#

man, I rlly need to get this fixed asap

#

otherwise I may have to switch os back to window

vagrant sonnet
#

@winter rock @last sparrow I found smt interesting
