Today I decided to make the switch from windows to Linux mint. I downloaded the iso, ran it through Rufus.
I thought it would boot like windows putting the flash in the bios flash slot but it just went to bios if anyone could help it would be apreciated

You have to insert the USB stick in a generic USB port, not any dedicated BIOS flashing USB port
Then ensure it is first in the boot order in your BIOS setup

In lieu of method above, find your machine's BOOT MENU KEY (google it for your brand if not aware of it) and press that within 1 second of turning power on. choose uefi-usb to boot live
