Hey all, so I did a really stupid thing

I just moved into my dorm and it uses a PPPoE connection through wired ethernet, and I set it up yesterday through the network manager. But today when I turned on my desktop the internet wasnt working and the wired option wasn't showing up in network manager, so I did some googling and a post said to apt purge and install it, so I did that. But it must not have installed right because when I rebooted my computer I got a black screen and a message saying unable to launch cinnamon-session-cinnamon" X session etc etc. After some more googling ive made my way to a command line, but I can't do the repair (reinstall cinnamon) because I dont have internet. I've hooked up my phone with USB tethering (which worked in the past) but it isn't connecting (likely because I purged the network manager). Is there a way to connect to the internet using the command line without network manager in this way? Or should I just reinstall mint at this point

#

Is there any other information I can give? Im really new to linux

Tldr; how can I connect to the internet from a command line without network manager

if u had a timeshift snapshot, boot the live USB, and restore last known-good snapshot

#

if not, u'd have to do complicated chroot into the system from live, and reinstall network manager from CLI

#

and u'd need a working connection to do it

#

the live system should still provide you with Graphical tools to make a PPPoE connection in the Settings> Network thing

also ethernet does not require setup like wifi does.. you just plug it in. As far as i know

The ethernet cable uses PPPoE so I have to log in. I have pppoeconf installed, can I use that?

#

The wired USB tethering internet from my phone wasn't requiring setup before I did this

well, either chroot, and reinstall netman, or try this thing ( I really dislike working from pure raw root shell) , or reinstall

reinstall is 300% easier than chrooting between environments imo

#

And you're sure of getting a factory-fresh copy of mint how it was supposed to be

shrewd furnace

Sighs. Yeah I should probably reinstall. Im gonna take a crack at chrooting first

ALright, progress update

#

I have reinstalled Linux mint and just need to remember how to do the NVidia drivers stuff now

#

The original wifi thing is still an issue, however deleting and reinstating the connection fixes it until I turn off my computer

you must also make a dedicated pppoe connection in network settings. you're not using a LAN
