#Laptop now boots to nothing

I've been using Mint for my laptop for a long time. But now for some reason it shows the Asus splashscreen before booting to nothing. The battery is fine and the power indicator still comes on, but nothing else. I haven't made any recent modifications to it so I have no idea why this is happening.

Luckily I can still access the bios through the escape key, so here are the specs if that helps:
AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics 3200MHz
16GB ram
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU
NVMe SSD
Bios version 305

Intended behavior: OS turns on as normal.
Actual behavior: Asus logo then a blank screen.

see if u can boot the live Linux Mint USB

#

if it can boot the desktop, that's something

#

did u do some (bad) BIOS reflash / reset recently? almost always bad.

#

did you recently moved wires or cards around inside the pc?

#

is this singel- or dual-boot setup?

see if u had changed something in BIOS

#

perhaps inadvertently turning secure boot back on

#

ensure it's on pure UEFI boot mode

#

and that u see the loader uefi entry named ubuntu in there

warped tangle
#

Ubuntu is the only boot option.

bright scroll
#

ok boot it up

#

press esc before mint logo

#

at grub menu, press e

#

put nomodeset at end of second last line, and boot.

warped tangle
#

Do you mean from the usb?

bright scroll
#

boot usb, and run boot repair from the desktop start menu

#

that will force grub to show up, no matter what.

Pressing esc after that shows a grub command line. But e and nomodeset don't do anything.

bright scroll
#

press e at that point

warped tangle
#

Ok it's showing the setparams.

did u see this? #1429152383018991697 message

warped tangle
#

Yes.

bright scroll
#

follow what it says there for safeboot mode

warped tangle
#

No mention of safeboot.

bright scroll
#

it's in massive letters

warped tangle
#

Still no mention of it.

#

It's off in the bios.

bright scroll

and u already did the 'recommended' boot repair?

warped tangle
#

Yes.

bright scroll
#

and usb boots with full graphics , sound, and network?

warped tangle
#

Yes.

bright scroll
#

well idk why the OS just quit like this

#

do u have timeshift save?

#

if so, boot usb, and restore from there

warped tangle
#

If I do how would I access it?

bright scroll
warped tangle
#

The text before had something along the lines of "error: viacon disables gpu"

warped tangle
warped tangle

The timeshift managed to boot it up properly!

warped tangle
#

@bright scroll after installing updates and rebooting it's right back to not working.

bright scroll
#

then don't update.

warped tangle
#

Just never update the laptop?

bright scroll
#

not for a few months

#

and always have a fairly up-to-date system snapshot

#

probably some kernel update screwed u over. Especially if u installed nvidia in some non-orthodox way
