I'm downloading Mint on my brother's PC, and I've disabled quick startup, rearranged boot order so the USB is on top, but after the prompt to start Mint, it does some start up and then loops here.

He has an ASRock Z590 PG Velocita motherboard, in case that matters.

It's not new. It's been part of a PC for more than 2 years. Don't remember exactly how long.

modern stag
#

what GPU?

narrow summit
#

casper seems to be blocking

#

can you redownload the ISO, verify the checksum and use Ventoy/Rufus?

#

I recommend ventoy since you can create your very own "vendrive" and have like 17 Linux ISOs ready to go, just drag and drop the image

#

I'll be away from it for a bit, but I'll cont check then. I've been using balena etcher, but I'll be sure to check out ventoy.

Also, he has an MSI 3050

nvidia then.

#

you'll need to use compat mode and then see #1295728709306683482 index section 3 later on

#

or use Zorin OS

So after installing ventoy onto the flash drive, then dropping the iso into the flash drive, and selecting normal mode in the mint installation options, I'm met with this. I've even done a legitimacy check on the iso before this, and it was fine.

in ventoy white screen, look at bottom left corner to see if u are in BIOS or UEFI mode.

#

any old computer, pre-2013 will only be BIOS

#
  • in second ventoy white screen, choose 'file checksum' > sha256 and let it have a minute to compute the hash. make DAMN sure that result matches the official listing on your distro's website.
#

do not proceed if it doesn't

dense mist
#

So since it says 1.1.0 BIOS, should I go all legacy in the CSM compatibility options?

modern stag
#

if newish pc, disable legacy.

dense mist
#

So all UEFI in my case, got it.

modern stag
#

then plus 'compat. mode' in the black OEM distro live boot menu

dense mist
#

yeah, i was waiting for that to finish, but it didnt have the same checksum. its almost like ventoy modified it, but idk if thered be a reason for that

#

Just tried it again with the same iso, which I reverified was legit, checked in ventoy and it ended up the same changed checksum.

modern stag
#

thus you end up with bad erroneous data on the stick

Alright so after recreating ventoy on the flash drive, readding the iso, and doing a checksum on the PC, it comes to the right output. I execute it, it goes through some stuff and all read OK, but now I'm left with this which keeps blinking every ~10 seconds. It seems stuck there.

#

And as soon as I send that, this pops up.

narrow summit
#

how old is this drive?

modern stag
#

definitely a live medium issue.

#

after witnessing last pic.

dense mist
narrow summit

i think it's giving up on life

dense mist

Specifically:

GIGABYTE AORUS Gen4 7000s M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.4 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) GP-AG70S1TB

narrow summit
#

no i mean the USB drive

dense mist
#

Oh, my bad.

narrow summit
#

wait

#

that's an sd card

#

microSD to be precise

#

are you using that as your live medium?

dense mist
#

Yes

narrow summit
#

how old is it?

dense mist
#

I've had stored as a extra for something like a year, and started using about 3 months ago. I got it from aliexpress.

modern stag
#

those suck SHIT

#

always errors with this usage. seen it many times

dense mist
#

I can probably find an actually thumb drive and try that 😅
