hey guys, I’m having trouble with playing a game through proton/steam, I was trying to play the binding of isaac but no matter what proton ver i use it just loads into a black screen even though I can hear audio. Im a complete noob to linux and only switched over a few days ago so I don’t even know how to get the log lol, any help would be really appreciated

2 things to check. First, what's your GPU? Nvidia, AMD? Are the Steam games on your Linux formatted drive or windows?
If it's AMD. In your terminal. Copy and paste, enter each of these 3 lines.

but i tried most listed versions of proton and i had the same problem each time
well like on newer versions the game would crash immediately but on older versions the game loads there just isnt any display, it's just a black screen
i can hear the game and select options etc

It's really old. Try Proton 5?
Force Proton.
Options for Isaac, Properties, Compatibility. Click force proton. Try version 9.
Also, under launch options. Is the box blank?

I force closed discord entirely and then tried the game and still no
maybe it could be the steam overlay? but I doubt it
It's just weird since the sound works perfectly and i can hear like that my input is working just a black screen

yeah seems like switching to integrated graphics worked on the steam forum but idk how to do that
and id rather have it run on my dedicated gpu if possible

Yes, if it's a mod it wouldn't run on regular set ups like the GPU.

You will need to get rid of the mods, while not deleting your save files. Move them back up somewhere else.
Just take your save files and mods. Move them to another folder you won't lose track of.

The easy way to force CPU integrated graphics is to purge, remove your Nvidia driver. Run it as Noveau. However... we don't want to do that.

im not sure since tboi has workshop mods so when theyre installed theyd go to the workshop folder and i don't see anything there
maybe i can try reinstalling the game completely just in case there are any files left behind

Make sure the whole folder is fresh removed, complete uninstall, nothing left. If you reinstall over. It'll still be there.
Back up your save files before doing so in another folder.

Is isaac the only game that gives you black screen? As a test run steam from the terminal, not the menu and see if the game behaves differently (use proton 9 or experimental)

it seems like it, since i tried a different game with proton and it worked
also redownloading the game didn't do anything, I don't think I have mods since theres no folder for the mods in workshop folder
