#I could connect to a shared folder yesterday, can't connect to the same shared folder today

Nothing changed between yesterday and today as far as I know, but I can't connect to a folder shared from windows server on the LAN anymore. No matter what I put in the folder box, I get various errors, like "check your details" or "no such directory"

The closest I've gotten is in the attached image, where it just spins on connecting forever with no feedback. Please help!

maybe the local IP changed (for the target )

#

can u access ur router's administrative setup page?

#

well, I'm connected to the same server through RDP with remmina

#

but i'll double check

grizzled marsh
#

idk much about remote desktop stuff

dreamy forum
#

yes its the same ipv4

#

whoops

#

from the ipconfig on the server

#

mkay

#

can u draw a sketch of how all these computers are laid out?

dreamy forum
#

this is the shared folder I'm trying to connect to

grizzled marsh
#

include in the sketch all relevant computers and the router

dreamy forum
#

okay one sec

grizzled marsh
#

or at least some main folder WITHIN I: drive must show that symbol

dreamy forum
grizzled marsh
#

unless u made it shared from root of I

dreamy forum
#

hard to see but that's the little shared icon

#

also, important to emphasize is that I literally connected to this folder yesterday with no problems

grizzled marsh
#

mkay

#

i'll await the sketch

#

please put text labels on stuff and draw "wires" or dashed lines if wifi linked

#

oh ok

#

seems simple enough

dreamy forum
#

and the router like, goes out to the internet through another ethernet but that shouldnt be relevant here cause what's relevant is the LAN

was the Remina thing something you're running on the linux computer to gain remote graphical access to the windows server's "desktop"?

dreamy forum
#

yes

#

so the two can definitely communicate with each other

grizzled marsh
#

so i guess Remina is installed as an application on the Windows server computer too, I take it?

dreamy forum
#

remmina is like

#

so RDP, Remote Desktop Protocol, is a standard used for windows computers to see each others desktops

#

Remmina basically just lets me RDP into a windows machine from linux, so the windows machine thinks it's receiving an RDP connection

grizzled marsh
#

so u enabled RDP on Windows i guess, and set some password?

dreamy forum
#

yes

#

I didn't have to install remmina or anything on the windows machine

grizzled marsh
#

ok

#

so the rdp thing and the file share thing are two separate things?

dreamy forum
#

yes

grizzled marsh
#

why not just use RDP then?

dreamy forum
#

rdp doesn't transfer files

grizzled marsh
#

oh

dreamy forum
#

remote desktop and shared LAN folders have nothing to do with each other afaik

grizzled marsh
#

waht it do, just show a virtual desktop and move mouse around?

dreamy forum
#

essentially

grizzled marsh
#

k.

#

idk why one day it works n now no. especially if the LAN IP of the win server didnt dynamically change (IP lease expires, on DHCP)

dreamy forum
#

yeah

grizzled marsh
#

I do have this other resource.

#

regarding SMB/samba stuff on linux

#

u can view it, and review ur stuff in accordance

dreamy forum
#

okay, ty

#

do you mind if I ask, should I be putting something in the Folder text box? in the first image I attached?

#

just so I know like, how it should be set up

Wild guess. watch full vid first

okay, ty

#

well, I was able to connect by typing the address directly into the file explorer

#

the like, address bar at the top

grizzled marsh
#

koo

#

as an aside, you may have an easier time using krusader file manager as a secondary FM on linux Mint to handle network stuff

dreamy forum
#

i'll check it out, ty!

Typing the address directly into the file explorer allowed me to connect. No idea why putting it in through the "connect to" window didn't work

I'm at work rn I won't be able to check til I'm home, but it's whatever one comes with Linux Mint cinnamon
