Hello all, i'm working on configuring my computer for duallboot with Pop!_OS and windows 11 and am looking for help. Yes i'm aware Pop!_OS will break my windows bootloader and that it will need fixing, that's another help post for another time. Right now i'm looking for help configuring my drive partitions for install of Pop!_OS. for context, I have an ASUS Proart PX13 laptop with a 1TB NVME, currently taken up by windows 11 and relevant partitions, as well as a failed attempt at installing Linux Mint Cinnamon and relevant partitions, and a little bit of unallocated space. Any help and advice welcome.
#Pop!_OS manual install help.

according to the lsblk shown above, p5 on nvme is your OEM (Asus) recovery stuff
well is it progressing?
So far so good. Just opened manual install screen
So, are there any partitions i need to add?
you'll want to tell it the root partition to install Pop OS on is sda6 and bootloader (i think it uses systemd, not grub) is to go on the existing ESP, partition 1 of nvme
mountpoint for root is to be /
sorry not sda6
nvme0n1p6
Oh, crap. I deleted p6 to get rid of mint. Do I need to make a new p6 real quick?
what formatting should it be? Ext4?
it should have u do so in the installer
yes
if it's anything like the Mint installer, you have to click + to add a partition
Not directly, I have to click manage partitions and make a new one
Ok, so have to mount a root, home, and boot in seperate partitions? What space am I wanting optimally for each of those? What are they doing? I know boot is gonna be the bootloader.
u dont have to do anything but root and efi
hence why i whited it completely out in this pic
Ok. So I have a root and boot partition set, but the instal option isn't click able. And the root partition has an exclamation.
;
Oh crap it cropped weird
can u please show FULL pic
i dont like this
Ah, found the error. P1 is too small it says
back out
back out and save absolutely no changes
then open gparted and show the drive in question there
if you can't back out, kill the installer program
ctrl-alt-t (for terminal) , xkill and click on installer
@foggy marlin
hope xkill exists in this :#
Xkill worked. Here's the gparted
thats parted
Oh, mb
minimize that and do gparted from the app grid
right click p6 : Delete
Done
What was wrong with it?
Unless I did it wrong, that was the partition you told me to make.
im gonna suggest make separate ESP then unflag the other
but idk if u started the install already and it wiped nvme0n1p1 or not
search the app grid for Disks app
I did not. As mentioned above it wouldn't let me cause p1 was too small for the boot
I'm in disks
in terminal do sudo mkdir /mnt/tmp && sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/tmp
^^
then sudo nautilus after
then in admin nautilus file manager, you should be able to navigate the Filesystem to /mnt/tmp
there u can dig around and make sure the Microsoft folder is still there
and the efi files within that allow your Windows to boot
Ok, I tried this and it did nothing. Just immediately jumped to a new terminal line.
Oh, wait, tried again and it said file exists, guess it just doesn't give any feedback
.
Did this. Opened file explorer, there's only 1 file labeled installer.log
can even do sudo nautilus /mnt/tmp for direct navigation to it
press ctrl-L , wipe the address bar empty, then put /mnt/tmp
Ok
Still there
aight
close the file manager and unmount the ESP
u can just click the stop button in DISKS app
show gparted now after clicking the big checkmark in its toolbar
right click the unalloc'd : NEW
new size: 1024 MiB filesystem type: fat32 partition name ESP2 label: ESP2
Done. Apply changes?
yes
then you'll need to manage flags for it
add the esp and boot flags
then manage for p1 and take those two same flags off of it
Done
having the exclamation mark in the label name may be brutal
Why?
fk around and find out
Fair'nuff changed to just popOS for both.
i'd suggest change it
Anyway, applying
ok hit the big checkmark
so manual installer, tell it p7 for root (/) and p6 for boot
Cool. And then i'll have to move the windows boot stuff at some point?
Done. Send it?
eh u may either put flags back LATER, or find out how systemd boot works and if it can add a boot entry
and scan for and add Windows
Ok. That's another help post if it comes to it though.
if not, readd the flags to p1, and u'll only be able to use the quickboot key ur motherboard uses to choose an OS
Wouldn't putting flags back be bad? I thought you said i shouldn't have 2 ESP's?
Oh, ok
Is quick boot different than the BIOS boot menu like used to get to the live environment? Or is that what you're referring to
Ok, yeah, what i was thinking of
Booted to desktop!!!

Checking for updates now. Will I need to do drivers as well? Actually MB, this is all stuff for google
well you'll want to check if the graphics were set up right . do inxi -MGxxx and share result @foggy marlin
Terminal says Command not found
It has, give me a sec
Looks like the drivers are already installed (i picked the pop os with nvidia iso)
press enter
Did
.
your monitor should show its brand name here and resolution if was set up right
and a numeric nvidia driver shown next to driver
I'm assuming it's the "Monitor-1" information?
yep. strange no OpenGL stuff
you'll want to check 'nvidia settings' in the app grid to ensure that's around
It's here
and set the nvidia to fulltime use or on-demand
Where at?
games may have to launch with a setting to force dedicated gpu , or the fullltime thing must be on
idk u'll have to study it
and see official manual of Pop OS if they provide one
and the business about OpenGl
btw, for a 13 inch screen, the current resolution is stupidly high. (not good)
turn way down
To be clear that's my actual screen resolution. Can I just change that value in the terminal by editing the stuff it spat out? Or do I need to do a terminal command.
Ok, thanks. Sorry. Should looked for that first
Ok, just making sure I understand. The resolution setting only affects UI elements? Or will it affect the entire display, like for instance if i'm gaming.
I think it's set to fulltime by default. Nvidia setting says it's under a little bit of load right now
all ofc
that or u gotta do font size changes (massively)
or UI display scale changes unless u like microscopic icons and text
Well I understand having to change UI scale, I mean if I have my resolution set to say 1920 × 1200, will that lock the entire display to 1920 × 1200, stopping me from playing steam games at the 3k my screen is made for?
;
u have a 13 inch screen
that's reasonable to play at 1080 vertical, and even THAT will look small in a game
just an observation
if u wanna play stuff native res where everythings super tiny that's ur prerogative
I always play stuff at native resolution and just tweak the UI scale via in game settings.
