I have no way to describe it, so you can click on the attached video. It happens at random sometimes, but also continuously whenever, and shortly after, an application opens. As a result of this, I've been stuck using 5.15.0-157 and Linux Mint 21.3 for a while now and it's annoying... I tried to update to 22 so I could use 6.14, same issue. Backported so I could both not have visual artifacting and another reason that I MAY ask about in #1170387126123253932
Only thing I know is that it's the driver or the mesa stack. I boot in recovery mode and it works fine, just like magic!
Here's a dump of my hardware info, I'm booting using my forced main kernel right now so bear that in mind:
https://termbin.com/k1hb

Steps to reproduce:

  1. be me? i guess? this issue seems unique to me or very uncommon.
  2. boot from kernel version 6.8.0-87 or 6.14.0-35 regularly (not with recovery mode).
  3. observe. open an app or two.

Expected Behavior:
displays visual information as normal

Actual Behavior
whatever the hell the video is

Additional Information:
I'm like 50% sure im using GNOME, just looking at my terminal. Says:

Terminal: GNOME Terminal 3.44.0
under the big ole information screen at the top fastfetch gives you

#

I was considering live booting Debian 13, LMDE 7, or some version of Fedora and seeing if the issue persists

#

this hopefully wont be relevant in a couple days max

#

im doing a fresh install of either a kde version of fedora or debian 13

#

if it STILL tweaks out then I'll update this post

#

what gpu are you using and display server?

#

need inxi -Gxxx and echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

#

also show dmesg -l warn+

#

and i guess sudo apt install vulkan-tools && vulkaninfo | grep -E "device|renderer" too

#

Is this debian?

#

No driver is loaded for your GPU

#

Linux mint 21.3 does not support your GPU.

#

5.15 seems to be too old for Navi 23

#

No flickering when driver isn't loaded means the issue is the driver

viral dock
#

i've established that, yeah

#

happens on 6.8 and 6.14 though, where it should not be.

#

5.15.0-157 is somehow functional, for a bit.* haven't tested 0-91 because that's an even further downgrade
*obviously with something that old something's guaranteed to go wrong. i get random freezes that force me to shut down the system by holding down the power button on my case. probably because 5.15 is too old for my gpu as you said.

#

and since i'm booting without my graphics driver loaded, i'm just going to use 6.8 while i find out how to go about backing up my personal files

#

You can try Fedora 43

viral dock
#

yeah i was considering fedora

gaunt sparrow
#

More as a test to see if it's an amdgpu driver issue with your card

viral dock
#

well, seeing as how i'm planning to switch off mint for various other reasons already, i'm going to have time to try it out

Visual flickering with AMD GPU

booted my windows ssd for the firts time in a couple days

as i thought, no visual artifacting

Updated

Description:
I have no way to describe it with words, so you can click on either of the videos i've sent.
I initially tried updating mint to 22 to try out 6.14, but that did not fix the issue.
After backing up my files and running a live boot on fedora 43, the issue persists.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Be me? I guess? This issue seems unique to me or very rare.
  2. Boot onto any version of the 6._ series of kernels with graphics drivers enabled. Distro likely doesn't matter. Whether or not it's live or from the main ssd doesn't matter.
  3. Observe.

Expected Behavior:
Displays visual information as normal.

Actual Behavior
Whatever the hell the videos are.

Additional Information:
It works COMPLETELY FINE on kernel version 5.15.0-157 and on WIndows 10.
I'm running a Radeon RX6600

Setting my refresh rate to 60hz fixes it?

#

i play games, so this is a band-aid fix

#

120 hz also works

#

here are all of my options

gaunt sparrow
#

Also, given that this happens on the (almost) latest kernel, you may file a bug report for the amdgpu driver

viral dock
#

ive had this thing for close to 6 years now

gaunt sparrow
viral dock
#

yeah i

#

agree with that sentiment

#

i selected 120 hz and it mysteriously switched to 120.05

How big is your /

#

Does your monitor support FreeSync

#

or some shit like that

viral dock
#

the easiest way to know would be to look it up with my monitor's name, and i don't have that
