#Trying to install mint in dual-boot, no mouse or keyboard movement in window's recovery screen

As the title suggests, I am trying to go to bios to follow a tutorial on dual-booting linux mint on a partition of my windows 11 pc, but when I try to go to the recovery screen to access the bios, my mouse and keyboard rgb lights are fully off and no usb devices are working.

I also tried to access the bios from restarting and holding/spamming a keybind but the old one as well as all new ones no longer work for some reason.

I do not know how I'm supposed to install from my usb install drive (which I successfully used on my laptop) if I cannot access bios at all.

#

tab and enter also don't work to move the selected box

wary rock
#

look up your model's specific Boot menu key AND BIOS setup key

#

either must be pressed within 1-3 seconds of power-on

#

use a regular keyboard for the F-row that doesnt use or rely on "Fn"

#

probably the Fn thing

white wolf
#

hmm

#

that doesn't usually affect when I'm using them normally

pallid tree
#

Worst case scenario. Remove motherboard battery and put it back in?

white wolf
#

I tried delete and f12 after bootup after turning off fast boot and nothing happened

pallid tree
#

Have you had any other issues with your keyboard?

white wolf
#

same with the mouse

pallid tree
#

So when you're in Windows the keyboard and mouse work no issue?

white wolf
#

yup

pallid tree
#

Did you play Battlefield 6?

white wolf
#

no

pallid tree
#

Not ruling out a TPM 2.0, bitlocker glitch. But that's usually the cause.

white wolf
#

I saw somewhere that the newest windows update breaks the ability to use usb devices on the windows recovery screen so if possible I'd like to be able to open the bios without using it but I can't seem to get the keys to work on boot

pallid tree
#

It does this with the USB plugged in or all the time?

white wolf
#

by usb devices I mean my mouse and keyboard but I will try removing the usb mint install drive

#

wait nvm it's already out. it is all the time

pallid tree
#

Let me poke around. Brb.

#

Go into your device manager in windows. Does it show your keyboard and mouse?

#

You are probably missing the USB controller driver. Or it is corrupted from the update. From the device manager let me know if it shows your mouse and keyboard.

white wolf
#

I don't see my keyboard anywhere but my mouse is shown under USB Controllers and Mice and other pointing devices

#

oh wait I might see it

#

it doesn't have the brand, it just shows 4 copies of "HID keyboard device"

pallid tree
#

See if you can update your USB drivers. Especially the keyboard. Scan for changes.

Then restart your PC, hit F12+F9+ESC+DEL. That's the manual, F it force open BIOS option.

white wolf
#

did what the tutorial said, it said my drivers were up to date already

#

doing F12+F9+ESC+DEL does nothing for me

pallid tree
#

Are you on the most recent update of Win11?

white wolf
#

I think so

pallid tree
#

Try and update. That might fix it. Also scan for errors. Can you access the recovery screen? Or is the keyboard/mouse locked out of that too?

white wolf
#

I'm on 25H2

white wolf
#

that was my original problem

pallid tree
#

Your goal is to repair the boot, start up.

pallid tree
#

Linux isn't happening. Nothing is happening until you can fix your BIOS.

#

I'm hoping it's not TPM locked. We have two options. First update/repair windows as much as possible. Restart and see if that fixes it.

white wolf
#

it says there are 2 new updates, a 2025-11 security update (kb5068861) and "windows malicious software removal tool"?

#

which is strange because windows made me update literally today

pallid tree
#

Update it all. Restart PC. MS doesn't let such glitches stand. I assure you MS will repair it on their end.

white wolf
#

k. i am trying to update it. will update y'all when it's done

#

still not done installing

pallid tree
#

Good. Sounds like it's fixing the error.

white wolf
#

updates have been installed. I will now try to use keyboard/mouse on recovery screen

#

holy moly it works

#

opening bois now

pallid tree
#

WOOT!

#

2 things when installing Mint. Boot from USB stick, turn off secure boot. Just to be safe. Secure boot is just TPM for MS to prevent people from stealing Windows. Any actual motherboard security is mostly superficial.

#

Once Mint is installed. Please mark this thread as closed. With the solution being to update Win11 to the most recent version.

white wolf
#

turned off secure boot, am currently trying to boot from the usb

#

oh. this is not mint.

wary rock
#

did u get LMDE?

white wolf
#

💀 ok then gotta make a new mint drive

pallid tree
#

Should be Ubuntu.

wary rock
#

and tbh, u really should be trained to do it from POST, not this bluescreen windows crap

white wolf
white wolf
#

wierdly it doesn't show up there right now

#

it won't matter, I have already set aside a whole partition for it

#

will probably end up fully switching but I'm still playing with different distros

white wolf
#

why is this not working

pallid tree
#

Insert the USB and press the key?

white wolf
#

whenever I press a key it just duplicates that sentence

pallid tree
#

Turn off PC. Then reboot into the BIOS. Tell it to boot from USB drive. Make sure the USB stick is in.

#

You might have selection the wrong USB option. There's usually several options.

white wolf
#

hmm...ok

pallid tree
#

Sometimes it's something like EFI USB, Legacy USB, Unbuntu USB.

white wolf
#

the only things other than windows boot manager and my 2 samsung evo ssds is something called pny usb 2.0 fd 1100
so i tried to boot from that but it doesn't seem to work

pallid tree
#

Is the USB plugged in?

white wolf
#

yep

pallid tree
#

PNY USB should be it.

white wolf
#

ok

pallid tree
#

Did it let you select the PNY USB?

white wolf
#

I literally just flashed it with linux mint what

#

do I need to wipe it and reflash it or something

pallid tree
#

Is the USB formatted to Mint using Rufus?

#

Another possibility is switching to another USB port on your PC.

white wolf
#

should I try rufus?

pallid tree
#

If you went through the full flash process. It should be ready. Try another USB port on your PC?

white wolf
#

k

#

i moved the usb to a different port and now my PC won't pull up the boot selection menu when I press f12 on startup. either that or I managed to miss it twice while spamming it

#

ok yeah no it's just not pulling the boot menu up anymore what

#

guess I'll try it from recovery screen

pallid tree
#

Otherwise navigate to Advanced, USB settings. Check and see if it's Legacy or EFI. Swap to the other and see it that works. Make sure in Boot up, the USB is set to priority. Save changes, exit. You can always change them back when done.

#

You can also try del to pull up the BIOS.

white wolf
#

i have booted from the usb

#

yippee. now install time.

pallid tree
#

Woot!

white wolf
#

the installer crashed what

pallid tree
#

Restart the process.

#

Don't rush it. It will take a bit to install.

white wolf
#

installed

white wolf
pallid tree
#

Take your time migrating everything over to Linux. After 6-9 months nuke away Windows if you want. Make sure you have Time Shift installed in Linux.

white wolf
#

gotcha

wary rock
pallid tree
#

It's like a rewind function to when the OS was stable. If anything breaks. You can set it for 1 instance, 1 day. Then later 1 instance 1 week.

#

Install Time Shift AFTER you have everything updated and installed.

white wolf
#

oh okay

wary rock
#

u can still run inxi -M from terminal

#

and see if it says, BIOS, UEFI , or (Legacy) there

wary rock
#

@white wolf just wondering, what does it say from that? ^^

white wolf
#

I am not home

#

will check later

wary rock
#

ok later then

white wolf
wary rock
#

ok. not "UEFI (legacy)" ?

nope, just normal UEFI

wary rock
#

that's fine then
