#Slow performance issues

I have been having pretty slow performance with quite a couple random things even after I feel like I've tried quite a bit. I am using Brave specifically (it performed the best for me on windows, and trying waterfox and such don't seem to fix any of these issues). My specs are in the pictures attached. All of these same things work perfectly fine still on windows 10 currently.

  1. Video in general plays slow if I have the window fullscreen, and then is more okay if I have the window not fullscreen but thats not ideal. I installed the h26ify extension which worked yesterday, but suddenly isn't working today anymore, even by fully closing and reopening brave and the extension. ALso a shame though because other video websites lag too which may not have their own individual extensions that work for them

  2. Just random stuff like dragging windows around and opening a program can be quite laggy. Just scrolling random pages without any video or anything seems to lag as well.

  • I have tried both the proprietary and the open source drivers on my gpu and these things seem to go about the same as well

  • I have disabled extensions and effects and trying these with only that one program open but the same happens

  • Updated my drivers to their latest version (although apparently going to a newer mint version might only make these issues worse so I haven't done that)

Only thing I can really see for sure is my cpu spiking when I am doing anything like dragging windows or have a youtube video playing with the browser fullscreened. My cpu is kinda old now, but it's still a gaming cpu that does all these things (and more, like many videos and tabs at once as well as gaming and such) very solidly still on windows. Is my cpu just too old for newer mint linux cinnamon?

Is there anything else it may be or I could try?

Please show the output of

mokutil --sb-state ; inxi -Gxxx

and

flatpak list

please

could you maximize the terminal window and run it again?

#

Thanks, in brave go to brave://gpu/ and screenshot the page

unique yacht
#

It lists a ton of stuff, too long for a single screenshot. Want me to "Download Report to File" and send that? Or just send multiple screenshots of the whole page

fervent root

just the top part with colored text

fervent root
#

huh..... did you update the system?

unique yacht
#

If you mean like all the updates from the update manager, yes

fervent root
#

hmm.... everything looks ok though...... are you saying if you play youtube video in brave, it lags?

unique yacht
#

Any video including youtube video, as well as for example twitch streams or toonamiaftermath (a 480p 4:3 stream), yes

fervent root
#

How about local video?

unique yacht
#

Local video surprisingly is perfectly fine, even fullscreen high resolution video

fervent root
#

Could it be then, that it's an internet connection quality issue?

unique yacht
#

I have never had issues with these things due to internet connection before (and other things like typing text here right now or moving windows lagging I would think wouldn't have to do with internet), but I suppose I could try a speedtest to make sure

fervent root
#

So typing in discord and moving windows around is laggy?

#

But typing in the terminal or text editor is not?

unique yacht
#

Typing in the terminal and text editor are also slow

fervent root
#

Alright, show me the output of

inxi -Fxxxz

just copy the text here

Oh, right, it says you have 2 monitors there. As a test, does anything change if you disconnect one?

unique yacht
#

Wow

Immediately, typing, video (even youtube video without h26ify on), and moving windows is completely fine

#

I never saw that this might cause this, dang

I would much prefer to be able to use 2 monitors still and 2 always worked on win10 before, is there a fix for this or something?

# unique yacht

even if it shows Hardware accelerated for Decode, it may not be using the video engine of the GPU

#

Chromium has some flags to force that

#

Not sure abt nvidia but they are usually --enable-features=AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxZeroCopyGL,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL,AcceleratedVideoEncoder --enable-gpu-rasterization

brave pulsar
#

and they fixed it hold on

fervent root
#

And please screenshot driver manager window.

Also, it says you have no swap?

brave pulsar
#

custom install probably

fervent root
#

As for the monitors, as a test, try to keep them on the same resolution and refresh rate

brave pulsar
#

xorg just doesn't handle resolution and refresh rate chaos well

unique yacht
#

Here's the driver manager, trying out changing the res and refresh rate right now

brave pulsar
#

correct driver

unique yacht
#

The 2 monitors are on the same resolution and refresh rate now, honestly it still maybe feels slightly laggy than just 1 monitor (1440p 120hz), but certainly much better than when they were different

unique yacht
brave pulsar
#

you can try the experimental wayland

fervent root
#

Wayland is better at this I heard, but on mint it's experimental, so will likely break other things

brave pulsar
#

i guess that as a test it may be worth it

fervent root

Logout and click on a mountain like icon next to your name - you can choose it there

unique yacht
#

I can try that, but also

I only just recently installed mint on this machine, I would feel perfectly fine installing a different linux distro if it would still be easy enough for me to use, comparable enough with mint linux or something. Might I be better off in the longterm doing that?

fervent root
#

also maybe update to 22.2 via update manager

#

I don't know about other distros, maybe Fedora KDE

#

2x 1440p 120hz maybe pushing it for mint's compositor and 3gb vram, is it better at 1080p 120hz both?

unique yacht
#

the 1080p monitor only goes up to 60 hz so idk

fervent root
#

or 1440p 60hz

unique yacht
#

also my usual is 1 1440p monitor 120 hz, while the other is always 1080p 60 hz

fervent root
#

Idea is to try lower (but same for both) resolution and \ or refresh rate

unique yacht
#

putting the better monitor at 1440p 60hz is about as laggy as it was before

#

only putting it down to both being the same makes a notable improvement (but still not perfect), with only 1 monitor being best even at 1440p 120hz

You can try Kubuntu or Fedora KDE, I think they both default to wayland now. Mint just takes it's time to polish it.

#

Kubuntu is probably closer to mint than fedora for ease of use, so maybe try that first

Alright, I guess from here it's just up to me to do my research on what I might want next. Thanks for helping!
