#I have an old hdd drive with Windows 10. Am I able to dual boot Linux Mint without losing my data?
354 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
check your bios mode in Windows 10 first. run msinfo32
make sure to boot the live usb up in that same bios mode
it says UEFI
Should i use Windows Disk Management to allocate space on the drive?
u may
otherwise mint gives a sizer to do it
but u MUST get and use the "install alongside" option
ensure that's done precisely as shown - post with hearts
then scroll to very top , 2nd vid for demo
as an extra measure of safety, back up your most precious data. Use any form of media that wont be plugged into the computer during an OS installation - DVD-R, other USB stick, disconnected hard drive, online storage services.
i can't. it's greyed out and shows a colorful pinwheel
even a 14 yrs old drive
oh i know what musta happened then
open the gparted app
click the hdd in the top right, and then show the app
alright well it did write about 10 n half gigs (a complete amount)
do ctrl-alt-T
then df -h
does it mention a line about efivars?
yes
ok good, that means ur in uefi mode
do xkill then click the installer after pressing enter
i did that. now it's closed
yep.
do a reboot, no usb. take the stick out when it prompts to.
you can use the start menu's icon for power to reboot
so i boot to my 2nd drive still which has windows and now mint i guess?
you'll test it. I predict it'll need boot repair. but do it anyway
alright. removing usb and gonna reboot. brb
remove it when it prompts u to, not beforehand
or when u see the eventual cycling of power
yea i just reread that part. can i plug it back in?
sure bit late but ok
like i unplugged it already
the live system does not like when the live medium is removed before a full shutdown
So what should I do? 😬
press ctrl-alt-backspace
if it takes u to a login manager screen, then click in the top, i think there's a power icon to reboot/shutdown there
lesson learned. dont pull usb
ok force reset
by holding the power key for 6 seconds. and NO USB in
does it show in boot priorites, a loader with name: ubuntu ?
disable csm / legacy anyway if there.
set boot mode to pure UEFI if not already
I went into bios and switched it to UEFI alone
put usb back in, and start the live system again (as UEFI, ofc)
once booted to desktop, search boot repair in the start menu of Mint live.
let it do the recommended repair.
then safely reboot and test if it solves.
It says the partition is nearly full and can prevent it from starting. Then it's saying to use the file browser and delete unused files
Yes
this is how it was 10 minutes ago
show it now.
can just use a camera
if u dont want to log in
otherwise use the ALT+Printscr keys together
the EFI partition is sda5, fyi
and it's not too full. it's perfectly normal
sda6 is your linux install's root
close the boot repair tool
and close gparted
open terminal.
sudo umount /dev/sda5 && sudo umount /dev/sda6
sudo fsck /dev/sda5
once done, sudo fsck /dev/sda6
that should find/fix any size or filesystem errors.
then run boot repair tool again
This is one command string right? Then i do the sudo fsck then the last one
Pasted the first one and it said /dev/sda5 is not mounted
go on
anything with a key icon here, is mounted.
ignore that
so press ok?
dealing with sda not sdb here
so u should know how many disks u have on the system
Yeah i gotta look into the file system to understand this better haha
search disks in the start menu
see just what the dang hell sdb is
click any device on the left, and see the titlebar
Boot repair successfully repaired
ayyye
now jsut hang on
do in terminal... lsblk -o name, type, model, label, size, fsused, fsavail, mountpoint and show
all one line
@gilded remnant
That's my main drive
it's not mounted, so can't tell (columns are empty)
anyway, try booting now. (do a full and safe SHUTDOWN)
Booting from the USB?
nope
hit your boot menu key on restart
u should see the ubuntu loader. start that
should take about a minute n quarter to boot Mint from a HDD
Umm it's saying my ssd has ubuntu
My files are still there?
u never said u had a SSD stuck in the system
if u had, I'd have told u to take it out
but doesnt matter. all it means is now the EFI of the SSD is starting the show for both OS's
.
likely
now test the Mint
u should get grub menu . just let it countdown n autostart
does Mint install boot @gilded remnant ?
sure
or type 'normal'
one of the two
if that doesnt work, shutdown the pc. take out the SSD. reinstall Linux Mint.
and tag here for help cuz that sda is some funny ass shit.
and it really only takes 26 minutes.
@gilded remnant
Alright it just took me to the boot device menu again(Windows or Ubuntu). I'm tired and will try again tomorrow. Thanks for the help today. True Linux fanatic
im back. so remove ssd, leaving just the old hdd i have in it(it has windows). do i need the usb again with mint?
yes.
I'd like to see the hard drive partitioning style
You'll need to reinstall Linux btw
To the USB stick?
no to the hard drive
So how do I uninstall it?
do you even use Windows 10 from the hard drive?
i'd recommend moving the stuff around a bit
To another drive?
I created a partition on the HDD already
show the DISKS app for it in linux
I can't boot Linux anymore. It shows the grub menu
in the live desktop
.
What's the live desktop?
So remove my ssd now and then do that?
yes
normal
that's the LIVE grub menu. (note the option for OEM Install) that's how you know
Got it. Do I start Linux mint?
click the one labelled "partition 2" then the play button. then click on the blue link
what's in that?
link
that's for partition 2 eh?
Yes
Done
delete partitions 2, 3, 4 as they're labelled there.
select each, and use the red button
clk free space first
then click the + icon to make an EFI partition
make it 100 MB and put the USE AS: field to 'efi sys. part'n
then , back on the main chart, click the free space yet again, and + again
to make the linux root
USE as: ext4 journalling filesys. mountpoint: / format: yes
lastly on main chart, at very bottom u'll need to change that dropdown to the new EFI partition u just made
Made the efi partition. I clicked the free space and + again.vdo I change the use as setting? It says ext4 journaling file system
ensure exactly like this
Clicked okay and now I'm waiting to be able to check the format box
ALL the f'n partitions must be primary
Oh it auto selected
So revert both efi and this one?
Sda1? That's where my Windows files are isn't it
good. click the install now button
make sure to not use an overly-complex password cuz u need it often in linux.
and remember it well/ write it
Press continue?
give it 25 minutes, and dont even breathe on the usb stick.
I did
nvm
ay that was quick
about 20 min
yes restart now
make sure it boots to the real install
u should get a welcome window
ok. so the only messup now is likely to clean up the ubuntu junk it threw on the EFI of the Windows SSD
i'd recommend do a full shutdown.
reconnect the SSD.. boot LIVE with usb again.
@gilded remnant u there?
yeah boot live
then go to the Disks app
click the Adata SSD, then the EFI partition on that same drive. then the play button , then the blue link. and show the resulting file manager
Which one is that on this list? SanDisk or
no the USB
Done /deleted
now, reboot out of the live system. go into BIOS : access the boot priorities screen
adjust the boot order so that the Ubuntu (capital U) from WDC drive is at very top
then save n exit the BIOS setup page
Yep it's already there
ok try it out n then gotta adjust grub so it will include the Windows loader
boot Mint from the WD drive, and tag me once at desktop
I signed in on Linux and I'm not seeing any grub stuff
Still loading tho
Welcome screen again
From the hdd
It does
I see SDA and 1-3 then SDB with 1-4
Alright yeah it shows both drives
ok so now, do sudo xed /etc/default/grub
My dumbass put show as part of the command at first lol
maximize the editor
putt the timeout to =10 (or longer if you wish more seconds)
and timeout_style to =menu
then save the file n exit the editor.
then sudo update-grub and watch it carefully the terminal
Generating grub config
did it say found windows?
good. if it's done, sudo reboot
whichever
Cool that it auto loads me here instead of me having to load pressing my keyboard
I'll test Windows first i guess
this diagram
it's because GRUB , which lives on partition 2 here, of Western Digital drive is being used to launch either OS on the system
Hell yeah that's convenient. Thanks a bunch man
Also I realized a bit ago of your wwe username
How do I do the efibootmgr part
from linux terminal
also keep your Rufus USB physically labelled and stored in a safe common place. it's your best rescue drive in case of any boot issues
u can still add files to its data partition if need as common storage
Will do. I'll just keep it in my closet
Booting mint to do that now
u probably still have the old lowercase ubuntu listing
I don't see a lowercase Ubuntu just upper
oh.. in that case, nevermind then
the uppercase one should be indicating a HD-0 ; DOS- 2 disk
since your HDD is in MBR/DOS partitioning style, and partion 2 of it is the loader
Is showing my user bad?
just never mind does it yes or no?
Hd(2,mbr
there u go. done.
