#Changed CPU and now Linux Mint won't boot/display

Heya! i just installed a Ryzen 9 5950x going from a 5600x, the bios asked me for a ftpm reset, wich i did, but now everytime i boot up the pc and go to mint from the Grub, there's no displays and my GPU goes bonkers (fans turns really fast and loud) and i have to hard reset the PC.
if i launch my windows 10 from Grub (dual boot), it works fine and sees the new CPU correctly.

I'm not sure what i need to do here, thank you.

#

I also looked online for solutions but i couldn't find anything linux specific

flint wigeon
#

I also tried booting into recovery mode but there's still no signal, this time the gpu is silent

trim adder
#

turn off secure boot

#

then set your BIOS BOOT ORDER properly

#

if a new system, make sure the computer boots linux mint from the UEFI loader (named ubuntu) and not the legacy loader which is the model name of the SSD or hard drive.

flint wigeon
#

It's my old system, i only changed the CPU, heres some photos of the bios settings

#

It's put on "other os" right now, and the keys tab looks like this

#

weirdly enough secure boot status says 'setup" and not enabled or disabled

trim adder
#

see if u can boot a live distro

flint wigeon
#

Like on Ventoy/Usb?

#

alright

#

gonna try xcfe

#

oh wait no cinnamon

#

Okay, started Cinnamon from the live USB, same problem, gpu fans going loud and no display

#

i'm gonna try xcfe now

#

Yep, same thing

#

I figured Linux mint wouldnt give me trouble for swapping cpus on the same board but i guess it does

#

If anything , my MOBO is asus tuf gaming plus wifi, and i updated the bios recently too

trim adder
#

maybe the CPU is too new or something

#

is there an Nvidia graphics card involved here?

flint wigeon
#

Yeah my gpu is a Rtx 5070 Ti, it's quite new, but it did work fine with the previous cpu

#

could it be a gpu issue?

trim adder
#

idk

#

try to boot the live Mint 22.2* distro

#

get a fresh copy.

flint wigeon
#

Alright, i'll download the iso rn on the windows boot and put it on the usb

trim adder
#

and live boot it in both normal AND 'compatibility' mode in case normal doesnt go

flint wigeon
#

Gotcha

trim adder
#

make sure to let the usb flash rest a half minute

#

after ISO supposedly is "finished" copying over

flint wigeon
#

noted

#

oh also the cpu i got is from 2020, for the am4 platform, i didn't switch to am5 yet

#

Mint 22.2 (non compatibility mode), same problem, going to try compability mode

#

Same thing happens as when i tried compability mode on my grub, No display, but this time the gpu doesnt freak the fuck out

#

i used 22.2 cinnamon, that's fine right?

#

oh wait what, i let it run for longer than usual, the gpu started running loudly, theres no display but i HEARD the linux Mint sound that plays on boot

#

(on 22.2 compability mode)

#

i got this installed on my computer rn

#

(the live usb had 22.1 because i didnt update it in a while iso wise)

trim adder
trim adder
#

Did yours reach a viewable live desktop?

flint wigeon
#

nope

trim adder
#

damn!

flint wigeon
#

i'll try again and wait longer

trim adder
#

that's messed up.

#

i mean if u heard a jingle (the login sound)

flint wigeon
#

i waited like 5 minutes with a jingle on the compability one for 22.2

trim adder
#

if u ran the live 22.2 - in compatibility mode - there should be no reason for it to NOT reach a viewable live desktop

#

unless ur GPU is messed up or something loose.

#

perhaps a DC power feed

#

got forgotten.

flint wigeon
#

Windows 10 does boot up and it works fine so that's even more puzzling to me

#

both my os are installed on NVME's

trim adder
#

does ur mobo have onboard graphics?

flint wigeon
#

The cpu doesn't

trim adder
#

in which case, a VGA, DVI, HDMI, or DP port will be there. farther away from the nvidia bracket

flint wigeon
#

nor did my old one

#

oh lemme check for that then

#

my mobo has a hdmi and a displayport

trim adder
#

idk if ur newest CPU has an integrated graphics processor

flint wigeon
#

it doesn't

trim adder
#

or in ancient times, dedicated microchips (ATI , for example - now known as AMD) would be soldered to the motherboard

flint wigeon
#

Btw launching Ubuntu does the same thing

trim adder
#

ikd

#

run Windows, use CPU-Z from cpuid.com to screenshot info on the motherboard, the CPU, and any/all GPU and post here.

flint wigeon
#

i waited about a minute, just heard the ubuntu jingle, but no signal

#

alright will do

trim adder
#

check BIOS and disable any onboard graphics support

#

to forcefully route video onto the dedicated nvidia GPU

#

at least for linux to do so

flint wigeon
#

Here's the CPUZ result, and gpuz too as bonus

trim adder
#

according to this, the CPU works well for linux.

#

do powercfg /a in Windows terminal please, and show result @flint wigeon

#

also show the mainboard tab of CPUZ

flint wigeon
#

on it

#

the cmd result is in french so lemme translate it rq

#

it says S3 is available, long sleep is available and hybrid is available, Microprogram doesn't handle S1, S2 and S0, and fast boot (the windows one) is disabled

trim adder
#

translate the enabled

#

where's it say 'fast boot' not available?

flint wigeon
#

The last one, 'démarrage rapide' means fast boot, some days ago i disabled it on windows because it was giving me trouble on linux with my HDD's

trim adder
#

oh i think i see it

#

good

flint wigeon
#

my HDD were read only when that was enabled for some reasons

trim adder
#

it causes many other issues too

flint wigeon
#

(i use 2 hdd on windows and linux in tandem)

#

cpu-z wise, yeah i updated my mobo in 2025, and looking at the fabricator list, the cpu is supported too

trim adder
#

anyway, idk what to tell u further.

flint wigeon
#

oh dear

trim adder
#

mint 22.2 should boot live within under 2 minutes

#

check all connections

#

and all bios. consult a technical manual for ur bios

#

perhaps has some info to be followed

flint wigeon
#

i was thinking maybe my nvme got disconnected or something but if that was the case it would work with the live usb

#

I tried 22.2 again, non compatibility mode, heard the jingle but no display yeah

#

should i enable csm?

#

i saw that option in the bios earlier

#

it's disabled right now

trim adder
#

worth a wild shot

#

then boot the stick as legacy

#

no U prefix

flint wigeon
#

alright

trim adder
#

that's the legacy live menu

flint wigeon
#

ah huh it selected the first option automatically, bunch of things appeared, some terminal lines, some glitched image, and now its back at a no display and fast gpu, i heard the jingle too

trim adder
#

k try the compat mode

#

lastly try a different discreet GPU if u have one (non-nvidia)

#

if it works on that, then it's definitely nothing to do with the CPU upgrade

flint wigeon
#

i have a rtx 3070, the other gpus i got are like, super old, i guess they can work?

trim adder
#

yes super old will work on the free driver

flint wigeon
#

found this

#

this one has hdmi nice

#

I just found out the psu to cpu cable wasnt 'clipsed" or at least looked a bit like it wasnt all the way in

#

before changing gpu, im gonna boot and see just in case

trim adder
#

aight

flint wigeon
#

this one specifically

#

god damnit, same problem

#

alright

trim adder
trim adder
#

now try your existing, installed Linux Mint @flint wigeon

flint wigeon
#

welp, it boots

#

low resolution but it boots normally

#

The gpu inside rn is a Geforce 9600 GT

#

i mean, i guess i can try with my rtx 3070 too??

#

i had that one before the 5070 ti, with my old cpu too

#

My guess is i could try to download a previous Nvidia driver from there? it doesn't really make sense but i don't have a lot of guesses right now

#

i got kernel 6.14.0-33 generic

#

one thing i didnt do is try the hdmi on the 5070 ti either, i only tried displayport, dunno if that would change anything but yeah

#

i do have access to my Linux install right now so if you got ideas on stuff/commands to run lemme know

trim adder
#

it was either bad PCI slot insertion, or loose DC cable on the 5000-series GPU

flint wigeon
#

I'll try plugging it again

#

I put it back, the same problem happens again, yet it works perfectly fine on windows

#

I'm sure the GPU is slotted in correctly as well

#

hell i'm gonna boot up cyberpunk for a bit on windows and check performances

trim adder
#

There's also Tuxedo OS, which offers some kind of nvidia bootmode

#

runs KDE Plasma desktop, wayland graphics platform

#

and Zorin OS, which i believe has an nvidia liveboot mode

#

dont forget to disable Legacy bios boot

flint wigeon
#

alright, i'll download these Iso's

#

I don't know any of those tho so yeah

#

Okay so before that, as a test, on windows im on cyberpunk, 1440 p, ultra ray tracing, literally 0 frame drops and smooth fps

#

so at least i know the hardware works fine

trim adder
#

ok

flint wigeon
#

i'm gonna try tuxedo os first

#

Do... i try the fallback one?

#

damnit, the fallback does the same thing

trim adder
#

no

#

obv. yours isnt pre-1000 series

flint wigeon
#

i figured i'd try lol, trying the first one rn

#

Could the problem be that secure boot says setup instead of disabled perhaps? also I tried the live version right now and sadly same problem again

trim adder
#

before you changed the CPU, was Mint very difficult to setup the 5000 series nvidia?

flint wigeon
#

Nope, i installed mint back when i had the 3070 in like a year ago iirc, then recently changed to the new one, slotted it in, worked fine out the box

trim adder
#

did u mention changing your BIOS today?

#

if so, change it back to the old image

flint wigeon
#

It wasn't today, it was a few months ago

#

like, at least 5+ months ago

#

wait huh?

#

HUH?????

#

Okay, i tried some stuff and

#

In the bios, i resetted everything back to default, that didnt work, but then i tried that "resize bar" thing, i tried turning it on earlier but it didnt seem to have worked, but this time i turned it to on and directly saved, it told me 'save these changes' wich were something about 'above 4g' and 'resize bar: auto'

#

And it booted??!?!?!? im on my mint install right now

#

That's, random, i could swear i had tried earlier too but now it works so yay
