linux
any particular distro?
Mint is one of at least 8 easy to use ones
at their core, they all use the linux kernel to run the whole show
and under the hood, all use the GNU tools, core libraries
and BASH, which is the common "command language" in the terminal
I'll show you something you can play around with for a few days
one moment
the User Interface (UI) not really
however, its official spins - Xubuntu, Kubuntu etc.. very much are quite familiar to the eye
now check this link. the video right above my words in it. #1370524777697251410 message
you can use UUI to set up a USB stick . let the stick be at least 8 GB so u can have some room for persistence
adjust the slider exactly how he shows it for persistence.
but no more than 4 GiB
will do, ty
yeah i have no idea what that means
that way you can try the Mint (or xubuntu, or kubuntu) LIVE
see the vid. i mention UUI below it
btw, do i have to spend any money?
not only live (which means it runs ready/hot right off the usb, no install) but with persistence means it keeps any changes you make in your session
regarding money: No. Just some time to watch the video and one not-expensive but decent USB stick 8 GB or bigger
so that's pretty much it. watch the vid and learn
and use UUI as he does
also see our #1295728709306683482 Index for introductory things -- and more!
i just watched the video, can i use any usb i want? i have one that is 15gb but its not the same as in the video
i also didnt really get how i can just switch between windows and linux
yes it is fine to use that, make sure nothing important on it before wiping
um, well what I told you about making the usb with persistence... it is running as a short term (few weeks, months) environment, capable of keeping changes, RIGHT OFF THE USB STICK.
when u want to use Windows, just turn off pc, unplug usb, then turn back on.
contrast to INSTALLING it PERMANENTLY onto the PC hard drive. that is different. and even that way there is a way to dual-boot with Windows.
this is how basically. @tardy stirrup
that will let you try it out. Next time you boot the usb up, it will remember any changes you did to linux. (preferences, programs, etc)
to boot the USB up so it loads this live environment, you press the boot menu key for your machine.
within one or 2 seconds after turning it on
Is linux mint easy to use?
Like when they say easy to use, what exactly is different from others
it's a DIFFERENT OPERATING SYSTEM.
it is graphical.. like Windows.
it has some quality of life adjustments, easily included in its settings manager
but it is NOT windows
try it out and u'll see
But it has the terminal, like the most important thing
so what?
No thats what i want
if u want to learn it sure. EVERY linux distro has a terminal emulator app
Yesss
literally every one.
So every command is the same
mhm
Then why is kali linux for example used for hacking
cuz it's like buying a weapons chest
all weapons are there.
Mint is like buying a house with furniture
Mmm i get it
u have the furniture, but u slowly have to add the tools / " weapons
i mean not harder, u just gotta first know WHAT to get (that's all up to you and u must read and research) then can easily get many programs from software shop
and it's free licence, free cost
Bro ty so much
withUUI above, read that link
Btw do u know where i can learn about the commands and stuff, like what to do first
u can put mint and kali and something else. whatever will fit on one stick
and u'll have a choice what to boot off usb
mint is 2.9 GB. kali idk. maybe 2 GB
wait
you need to really really learn the very very basics first
brb
btw, look at this https://www.disk-image.com/faq-bootmenu.htm
How to get to your Boot Menu or your BIOS settings? Use different hot-keys that go to these settings.
for boot menu key for your brand
I still dont rlly ger how i can just switch, so if i shut down the pc and put usb i just got inmediatly into linux and when i shut down pc and take usb off i go inmediatly into windows?
I guess ill undestand it when i try it
here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxuRxtrO2Ag&pp=ygUham9lIGNvbGxpbnMgbGludXggLSBpbnRybyB0byBiYXNo
This video is a crash course to help new users get started with BASH. Here is a list of the commands we'll cover:
BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO THE BASH TERMINAL
NAVIGATION
ls - list directory contents
pwd - print name of current/working directory
cd - change working directory
pushd/popd - put working directory on a stack
file - determine file type
loc...
afaik if the usb is plugged in it'll ask you which one you want
and if it's not there's only 1 option
he's a good instructor. and this is just introduction. he has many more related to terminal usage, and bash commands
i think it shows like 'ventoy' menu to choose
even if just one
yes this is correct
Btw i use my pc, not a laptop, is that a problem or could cause problems?
if u dont press boot menu key, and choose "USB STORAGE DEVICE" then it will just .. keep going and boot windows
no problem
Well thats easy
u can boot it just basically like the guy in first video showed (except he didnt press boot menu key on camera, cuz he already preset an order) and try out however long u want.
Also, do u recommend the hack the box site? Where i can learn haxking or is that a lil to complex, will i be able to do that after watching the video u send me?
u probably are so new that you NEED to watch several of the joe collins ones (last i sent) to get any clue about anything
Oh ok
i dont know the htb site at all.
before you can play a symphony, u need to learn the scales, and the instrument
Well ty for ur help, i will try tomorow and if something went wrong ill ask u
W philosophy
u can even watch this in bed 😛
Idk how u spell that
correct spelling
Exactly
feel free to review this chat, top to bottom if get stuck.
https://linuxmint.com/download.php the iso can be got from any link with country flags, near bottom once u click Download on the cinnamon (or xfce or mate) editions
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
Book from Sybex: "CompTIA Linux+"
Have you heard of this Stunner? Could be a good suggestion too for peeps wanting a persistent Linux distro on a usb. I set it up the other day. It's just great. Persistence is all set up automatically.
Toolbox option has some handy tools too
oh kool. yeah I know MX and Antix Linux does that too
Hello ive installed ubuntu and used balena etcher but when i try to boot it it doesnt show my usb for some reason
Idk if u can help me since im using ubuntu
do you know when this exact computer was made?
wait, nvm. I see it can run UEFI options.
follow this:
#1295816480256163892 message
pay attention to step 4b. make sure to set as GPT.
But i dont use mint
one can use every possible iso of any thinkable os with ventoy 😄
I dont understand half of what says there
Im cooked
Oh so balena is no longer usable
So i have to use ventoy ok
Is there any way someone can guide me through a call or something
do step 1
then 2 , etc
if u get stuck, tag me here
do i need a new usb?
no
any progress on this, @tardy stirrup ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mev24M-Bs8 this may help. Pay attention he says how for Windows too. (2:43 to 2:57) . Example site he is using is on the github web address, see the address shown in the video.
don't forget to disable Secure Boot in the security section of your BIOS settings
at 4:16 mark, don't forget...
4:02 to 5:17 is all you really need to understand and do. it's that easy. you can watch him boot it on laptop after. (6:44)
I can use any distribution right?
Yeah i dont know how to disable secure boot
That mightve been the problem before
show bios screens pertaining to that. if u have a camera
it supports many.
also, if u can't figure out how to turn off secure boot, see:
**
https://youtu.be/CuonyS3xdwg?t=303 <<5:03 ThioJoe Ventoy Secure Boot enroll steps
mmm how do i get into the bios
like what key do i have to press
i use an msi laptop
it should say at the splash screen. when u turn it on
read the screen. lower
my old MSI :
BIOS key : Delete
Boot menu key: F11
just press it once or twice. the Delete key or whatevr it says
ok ive been clicking delete nothing happened
u must do it within the first 1 or 2 seconds that the computer turns on
i am spamming esc and delete just from the moment i restarted the laptop
does it say to use ESC?
oh its f2 i thing
i havent watched the vid yet
nah i still havent accessed
bro its not f2 either wth
google your <MSI model + BIOS key>
ye it says f2 or esc
and ensure the F-keys works without the need for Fn
if 'delete' key doesn't work, try 'cursor right', followed by 'backspace' key 😉
Not really, but you could plug in an external keyboard.
can also probably go to BIOS from Windows, but that is LAST RESORT. u really should know the hot key
which i believe is DEL
unless MSI changed it in recent years
is del, supr?
just to make sure, delete is basically the key u use to delete a letter when writing right?
what did u press for this?
yes but not BACKSPACE
yeah boot menu was F11 on mine old
could be 'imppnt petsis' ?
what language is that even?
spanish but i dont even know what it means
lel
bro im just gonna try with every key
🤭
look for security
2 x cursor right (seriously, this time)
highlight?
select with arrow keys yes
it says change opt.
now u can boot ventoy with F11
so now i gotta watch the video
which one?
all
did u make ventoy usb?
ryan montgomery, the penetration tester? 😄
and put ubuntu on it
no..
here you go. plus read all i wrote there
you probably press "supr" that is in the same position DEL usually is in
yes probably
windows zip
Pay attention he says how for Windows too. (2:43 to 2:57) . Example site he is using is on the github web address, see the address shown in the video.
its crazy how my laptop takes 1min to download 15mb
when my pc would do it in 1sec
same wifi btw
maybe antenna angle/ positioning. or just poor wifi adapter, or some other network crap setting 😄
Why does my download look like this
may say "extract here"
in windows, DO NOT GO INTO THE ZIP
right click it: extract
Bro it just gets me into the same place
yeah that
then go into the folder it makes, and run ventoy2disk. and follow rest of vid
that's why i said UUI
No idea what that means
but do ventoy , it's easy af
Then im cooked
u fucked up
Youre joking
i even sent u pic how to change to GPT
go to option menu, and press "Clear Ventoy"
then hit the refresh icon after that.
look here
Bro how do u even know that
How many times have u done this🙏🏻
look the pic man
Ok i did it
says gpt both sides now right?
k . close that. copy the iso over
.
Ubuntu
yep. 64 bit right
follow the vid
I dont see the exe
Would it be better to update first?
Or did i just download the latest version
Im installing
Omg its slow
cheap usb
i can tell . i saw the name
in the ventoy installer box
anyway dont rush it. wait for it to finish copying. then wait ANOTHER half minute for sure after that
so it doesnt error
then reboot n hit F11.
u can do later
you can do that later (sorry for double post 😆 )
u should have the single ISO file, about 5 gigs big for Ubuntu, on the usb stick labelled 'ventoy' now. yes?
just with my pendrive
yes
yes
the pendrive is a live environment
thats crazy
but shouldnt i change my usb in the future? since its so slow
but for terminal practice, it's fine
no usb is that fast so don't worry
if u want to install it to the SSD, that's another story
but does ubuntu work better with better usb or is it just downloading stuff
no ide what ssd is
the SSD is modern-day hard drive. it does not spin or have moving parts like an old fashioned spinning magnetic hard drive
anyway test boot. see if it the stick even shows up now in the blue menu
on ur MSI laptop.
ok i am updating windows
make sure it's plugged in, and press F11 quick upon restart
bc why not
yoo letsgoo
never just pull it out. unless the power is off
u see the UEFI USB now in the F11 boot menu?
it says boot in normal mode, grub2 mode and 2 more
normal.
what are the other ones
ok im gonna lose it
the file checksum one is incase it is in question that the ISO was bad or copied bad. just dont worry about it
yeah we have a problem
why?
yk what, imma let u guess, cuz it looks pretty bad
black screen?
prob worse
did u start ubuntu , first option?
give it like 2 minutes to load the environment
am i cooked
not really.
dont use that version of ubuntu. ur computer gear doesnt like it 😛
get a small ISO.
no way my computer is that bad hahahah
how do i reboot
try ctrl-alt-delete
supr? haha
now that u know where the delete key is
if that doesnt do it, just hold the power key for 6 seconds, and restart to windows
oh the petsis thing
supr
just random
wow what garbage
u should get all the keycaps changed out for English ones
or use a usb keyboard externally
do the reset with power
ok
boot back to Windows.
isnt that bad for the computer tho
it's fine cuz it just froze.
btw the usb wasnt the first of the options
normally it's bad if it's writing to disk or something
it was second
not supposed to be really.
F11 lets u choose at will
ok so i have to do everything again
oh nvm, just download and drag into the usb right?
and delete the old one
right
get the standard edition there
whats that
it's a small linux
its still ubuntu right?
and get it from ur FAST internet PC
i mean idk if i want a small one
so why is it small
it's Debain -based... just like Kali is
tbh ubuntu in the last few years got so bloated... for nothing. 5 gig ISO for what?
even Mint or Linux Lite or MX linux are like 2.6 gig
but wont it be hard to find tutorial for this if not so many ppl use it?
everything in mini OS is basically debian
oh this is mini os
u can also get MX Linux
yes the distribution
is it like mini ubuntu or is mini os a complete different iso

depends what settings u have it
download it now.
i will help u fix ur USB stick so that it works even better
can u wait like 15min
just set it to download to ur save folder
sorry i got some things to do
oh well start the save anyway now
i am
ah
well 700 MB isnt that big. it should not take too long
ok im back
alrighty
i dont think so
you may need to learn about basic stuff like in computers, that deals with Boolean expressions
dont ask me, im not in any of that field. i fix lawnmowers
wait i said i was gonna help u fix the thing
take the usb over to your MSI laptop, and copy the ISO from the USB to somwhere on the hard drive for a moment
Lawnmower, really? you sound so IT professional!
i hang here long time n got wise
ok
ok done?
ye
it's on ur windows hard drive on the MSI now, the mini OS standard ISO yes?
yes
ok run ventoy2disk app again
gonna have to leave some 'reserved' area for mini OS to be able to save any persistence on
i swear if i fk everything up
dw. step by step here slow
will this take long?
nah
i gotta get some rest
not at all, if u follow
ill try
run ventoy, then go to Options: "Clear Ventoy"
as u had done before...
hit the green refresh button after
wait no
go to Options again, and "Partition Configuration"
in the thing for 'leave space at end' put this number:
4096 MB
which is exactly 4 binary GB
ok
then leave that box, and go to Option: partition style; GPT
its already set
no. click INSTALL plz
Bro i feel like my pc is gonna break or smth
do it.
dont waste time
then once installed... close ventoy app, and copy/paste the mini-os standard ISO file back to ventoy usb disk in file manager
let me know when done copying over.. then open WINDOWS DISK MANAGEMENT
search disk management
or computer management, then in computer mgmt, on the left near bottom is manage disk
then show it
u should see black 4 gig empty area for the USB stick
Is it this?
idk cant read all that
maximize it
then look near bottom
should have 'disk management' or similar
this is device manager
fk. no
close that SHIT
i said open computer management. windows 10/11 has easy search box
or DISK MANAGEMENT
can also right click 'my computer' icon in the file manager, and choose "manage"
do this please.
ok
my computer = 'this PC'
omfg
OBSOLETE: start menu, right click, disk management?
leave it dezi, dont confuse
come on....
whats the icon like
idk
are u this dumb with windows?
where is the windows 10 SEARCH BOX on the taskbar?
yes bro
or win 11 watever
bro i have to search it in spanish
thats the thing
and the words have like other meanings
pres windows key + r
It has to be one of those
got it open? u should see the 4 gigs black for usb
this is Disk Management now open, yes?
yes
fucking idk, probably
right click the black 4 gig free space of the usb
and do 'create new simple volume'
and make it as Fat32
the filesystem type
Yh bro u got this
do this.. and put SPARE for the new volume name
everything is right click bru
make SURE not NTFS
And use f letter?
put as Fat32.. yes whatever letter
it will format that dead space as Fat32. the label will show as "SPARE"
make SURE you chose fat32 man
not NTFS
Ok
I cant read all that.. just make sure it does quick format
good.
Imagine ts doensnt work
now close that . in file manager, did u copy the mini OS ISO file to ventoy drive?
and do u see SPARE drive now?
Yes
good one last thing
3.98gb
right click start menu.
do 'open command prompt (terminal) as administrator
then check something...
Whereeee
what's it say that result for the line about "fast startup" ?
bro whereeeee
yes
bottom is fast startup right?
ur killing me with this spanish..
and it says not supported , correct?
if so, reboot pc, to the ventoy usb and start mini OS
wait shit
incicio rapida is fucking on
close that prompt
open the command prompt AS ADMINISTRATOR
just right click the win11 start menu, should give that option
@tardy stirrup
yes
so i restart the computer?
NO
tf is that
u know what the start menu is or are u that dumb?
the second option
open terminal or whatever as admin
shouldnt there be more text like before?
sorry i just never met anyone who doesnt know simple ass things in windows
no it's fine.
nah youre good
apreciate the patience
i would know this stuff if it was in spanish
test if Min OS boots now
normal mode
then show pic of the next screen
press down arrow once in case it wants to time out
nevermind.
let it boot
in mini OS - live environment, the normal user ID is called live and their password is live backwards - evil
the admin user (aka 'root) is called root and its password is toor
remember both of those
generally i think just the live user is the only one u need - i think.
did it reach desktop, @tardy stirrup ?
so it should look like this in the pictures: https://minios.dev/
hm
oh well, i guess u can try it on your other PC.
omg
it wont hurt anything
bro i cant with ts
just pop the ventoy into ur other one, and boot the same way u just did
if not, try another distro another day. do NOT delete the spare partition, nor remove ventoy.
i dont wanna use my pc for it
true, but this is plainly as a test. it's portable
eh. i cant answer that
NO NO NO. think about it
p3 is empty. it's there for space, for mini OS to save any files/changes
anyway i would recommend u test it on other pc, just to see if it boots
it wont affect the other pc, but will prove if the flash drive is maybe writing the ISO badly or something.
sometimes the flash memory cells go corrupt. this is a real possibility sometimes
not saying that's for sure the case here, but might be
i still cant fucking reboot
normally
im going to try it
which key could it be tho
lol oh?
no name or label right on the case?
like ... HP, Lenovo,
if not, u boot Windows, and then get the program CPU-Z
Omfg i turned off my oc
that app will tell u the motherboard brand
ok what do i have to search
u should look at the SCREEN, as soon as u power on the computer
and it will (or should) say
its forgeon
press Fx for setup
press__for boot options
press __ for recovery
please boot windows up, that's not a motherboard brand
if it is, i sure as heck have never heard of it
icue is the rgb lightning standard from corsair or so.
go here: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html scroll down n get the 2.16 please. do it now
CPU-Z for Windows® x86/x64 is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system :
Processor name and number, codename, process, package, cache levels.
Mainboard and chipset.
Memory type, size, timings, and module specifications (SPD).
Real time measurement of each core's internal frequency, memo...
CPUZ will tell u the motherboard brand.
u can then google it for the hot keys u need (boot key , and bios key)
take a break if u want. im heading out . good luck
which one is it
which one is what?
did u go here?
its amd ryzen
it should look like this
do i have to download it
then read where it says Manufacturer.. in the mainboard tab
Of COURSE
thought u were there already
notice it also says the BIOS brand there too
YES
it's right there. click the purple Setup thing to get the exe and then install CPU-Z
i did bro i did
ok and?
notes
.
.
k. run the setup file to install the app
look at my pic
.
its micro star something
main board maker is MSI microstar international?
the manufacturer
so MSI.
it doesnt say msi
i hope u ran this on the other computer not the laptop from before
ofc
microstar international is MSI
so f11
Great
i want to caution u one thing
It didnt work
u may need to turn off Secure Boot like last time
aight
did it just do a blue screen for MOK or nothing?
or did F11 not even bring up the little blue boot menu box at all?
Stunner with the unwavering patience
see this exact thing, at the exact time point for secure boot left ON, and starting ventoy to boot an OS
If you don't know what commands do and scared of destroying your system might good to learn in virtual machine then doesn't matter because VM are isolated from your main operating system
any news on this?
