i want to dual boot linux and windows 11 and this is my first instance of doing something linux related. i just bought a 128 gigabyte usb drive and plugged it in. I looked up a tutorial on how to dual boot on youtube. i have installed an ISO file on my usb drive thing. then the tutorial tells me to shrink the disk that my windows is running on. However unlike in the youtube video i cant shrink it for some reason (screen shot). im really sorry if i get things wrong im an absolute beginner at linux and i have little computer knowledge in general.

note: in the video it tells me that i need at least 30 gigabytes free and i have 70
note 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmSymuoxoNA&t=119s im following this video
-# now we wait
u cant shrink it from Disk Management, is what you're saying?
Windows lately like to scatter immovable (to it) data all over the damn drive these days.
yeah
its really hard to free space because most programs just run in background for some unknown reason and i cant do anything about it
yeah
ok open powershell - as admin
ok
then do powercfg /a and state exactly what it shows for 'fast startup'
The following sleep states are available on this system:

Hibernate

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>
this is what it wrote
do powercfg /h off to deactivate fast startup
ok
this is very important for any kind of dualboot, even dual- or triple- drive systems
u can recheck using first command, that it worked
interference
next, ur prompt should be in c:\system something now yes?
yeah

this is what it wrote
i think its final
i dont think i know
ok u'll find out here with a tool;
its windows (C:)
that means nothing what u just wrote
see this, and get this tool. exactly as pic: #1366753008087728148 message
oh im sorry then
get the free Aomei, then use it to resize; it's all detailed step by step in that post.
ok
i'd recommend at least 60 GiB to shrink for linux
u just drag the blue handle on right of partition in Aomei > resize drive
if it's a rotational hard drive, it may take over an hour.
if an SSD, maybe 20 -30 minutes
aomei should mention the model of the drive in its infformation. u can google the model to know if its hdd or ssd
ok
ok its applying
oh yeah there a checkboxes for "automatically fix errors when found" and "shut down the computer when all of the ooperations are done" do i need to check any of them?
nah
Ok
good
I would send a screenshot but my windows is tweaking ever since i tried freeing storage
make sure on reliable electricity by wire and by battery both if applicable
My laptop is plugged in at all times
Lets just pray no one decides to bite out some wires in that one room that magically provides electricity to my apartment
make sure good battery in laptop
as a backup. but dont fiddle with it now to shake the cord loose
did it boot into PE mode?
and doing the shrink?
and for how long since it started doing the job?
Its 100% and plugged in
Its still shrinking
74%
I started about an hour ago
must be a hard drive for sure then
My laptop is bad though so thats expected
major defragmenting in progress
Lemme see if i can pull up the model
ur in that black PE mode, on that pc rn right?
What about it
😭
Ok
keep an eye open for this part. then do it as shown. #1366753008087728148 message
make sure u turned bitlocker off and decrypt after this program is totally finished
well it said its gonna turn off bitlocker as it shrinks
idk how to turjn decrypt off
just calm down and eat
omgg yes 100%
im full
is it gonna restart or what?
now for an actual resizing one hour
What… 😭
Is there gonna be any more painfully long loading screens after i finish the resizing thing
just the mint install itself. about half hour
.
Oh yeah
Is it okay if i leave my computer for a while
Is it gonna blow up or something if i dont look over it every five minutes?
u mean it finished . well check sizing
and while you're in Disk Management, check for ANY mention of bitlocker
ok
Dont see any mention of bitlocker
I think the software did its job
sooo
do i just keep following the guide or do i need to do smth else?
stretch the "STATUS" column
so u can read it properly
just follow my link it shows what to do after.
.
finished installing?
no
Its not like on the guide
why dont u see the thing..
Idk
Ok
do efibootmgr in terminal and read back first line
...
.
next one
did u tell the installer it was a RAID setup when it asked. (it does ask)
well, it seems ur drive's blanked
Oh
see if windows is still bootable
doubt it tho
if not, go in BIOS and turn OFF RST in storage options
put storage to AHCI and not RAID
How do i go to bios from this screen
press enter and then be ready to hit whatever key
the one used to enter BIOS
or juust pull usb n press enter
the point was to test if windows boots
My windows booted
oh
hm ok follow this then: #1357354361562337392 message
Ok
HP laptops are F10 for BIOS (and F9 for boot menu)
Ok
tag me once u've disabled RST/RAID and ur in the live mint desktop
Wait
Where exactuly do i find the Uefi settings?
Im confused
@pseudo badge where do i find the uefi settings
oof
I dont know where to find it😭
i think they hide it with ctrl-s. google how to disable RST on HP laptop
Ok
look in that uefi MII thing too , in pic above, last item
I found some forum and the first reply is that its not in bios
I did
This is the first thing that popped up
well that's a bullshit link
Not even joking
put ur HP laptop model in if needed in the search query too
disable RST on HP <model number>
Do you think this could be it?
Oh yeah it is
When i enter in it shows me this
If i go in again it shows me this
And this is the last screen
@pseudo badge i found it
then follow up with my link about the whole restoring the windows boot out of safemode, etc . the thing Maniak wrote there.
it's working
probably
ur pc should have a drive light on the edge or side indicating activity
good
.
Oh yeah
Disable safe boot then linux
Ok this is NOT how it should be
Everything is larger and my cursor is default
Oh wait its because im in safe mode
Im stupid
OMGG YESS
@pseudo badge its good now
What is this?
Do i press continue?
?
u should confirm in DISKS app.
probably will make a p4 in that space u made before
It works
wwhat works?
