Hi !
Strange Issue with Lenovo Legion Y520
For a long time, my Lenovo Legion Y520 had non-functional keyboard backlighting, fans, and dedicated GPU (GTX 1060 Max-Q). The system seemed to rely solely on the integrated Intel graphics, and I assumed hardware failure was to blame.
Recently, I attempted to use the laptop as an external monitor for my Xbox One via HDMI. Surprisingly, upon connecting the HDMI cable, the keyboard LEDs lit up, the fans started spinning, and benchmarks confirmed the GTX 1060 was suddenly operational. Performance tests showed the GPU working perfectly, which was not the case before.
However, this fix is entirely dependent on the HDMI connection. The moment I unplug the cable, everything reverts to the previous broken state—no LEDs, no fan activity, and the GPU stops functioning again. This behavior is inconsistent with typical hardware failures, suggesting a deeper electrical, driver, or BIOS-level issue.
Possible explanations include the HDMI signal triggering power delivery to dormant components, a software bug preventing proper GPU activation without an external display, or a motherboard fault that’s temporarily bypassed when the HDMI port is active. Further testing with other HDMI devices or inspecting power management settings might help isolate the cause.
Yes I used chatgpt but at least it gave me a well explained situation of my problem (I wrote first and the bot just completed)
