What's the proper way to format a usb for use with windows? I was at a copy shop today with some documents to print and the windows computer said there was something wrong with the usb drive. It offered me the option to continue anyway and I could print the documents.

But it made me wonder. What's the best way in linux to prepare a usb thumb drive for use with windows computers, without getting errors like that?

If you want a USB to work on both Linux, Windows and MacOS without running into issues then you want to make sure it's formatted to fat32. If you only care about Windows and Linux you could also do ntfs (the default file system for Windows). Most distros ship ntfs file system support in the kernel (except Arch and Gentoo), you just can't use ntfs for the root file system when setting up a Linux system.
