Remove the 6.4.6 version and install the one you had before
How do I remove it?
I also don't know what I had before
Can you bring up the terminal?
Yes
Ok, show me the output of
inxi -S
Ok, next is
apt policy cinnamon-dbg
It says you don't have it installed, did you remove it yourself?
I honestly don't know
Do you know which one comes in default with the version of Linux mint I'm using
Just type
sudo apt install cinnamon-dbg
there's just 1 version listed
You might need to restart for it to take effect
I did a power off
Alright, then go back to terminal and type
sudo apt install --reinstall mint-meta-cinnamon
Still acting up
Then please explain better what did you do before this started
Installed the package that is linked above
That's it.
After that it started doing THAT
why did you install it
well that's smart. fyi you install updates with update manager and not by installing random files off the internet.
do you have timeshift set up?
I don't even know what it is
can you do ctrl alt F5, then log in, then type timeshift list
@hushed iris he has access to a terminal
it keeps a working copy of your system incase you accidentally break it. the welcome app tells you to set it up.
ah
So yeah, can you show us the result of
sudo timeshift list
and
cat /var/log/apt/history.log | grep -A10 -B10 cinnamon-dbg
Not found
not found what?
Grep
and the timeshift?
There isn't one
can u share a ss or a photo of that
Yes, a photo would be nice
Check the spaces
space between grep -A20
hmm binary matches
now try timeshift
sudo timeshift --list
And
dpkg -l | grep mint-meta
please
Device: not selected
Ok, let's try
sudo apt install --reinstall mint-meta-cinnamon mint-meta-core mint-meta-codecs
and photo the result
also try this
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --reinstall cinnamon cinnamon-common cinnamon-session cinnamon-settings-daemon
I think those are included in dependancy chain for meta packages
... I did forgot apt update though
can you log out, next to your username select Cinnamon on Wayland and try to login? see if it works. remember the session for cinnamon is still experimental and so not all features are there.
Black screen
does ctrl alt t open a terminal?
Yes
What options do you have when you click the button next to your name in login screen?
um did u tried this all
I wasn't sure if that was one code or multiple
oh
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --reinstall cinnamon cinnamon-common cinnamon-session cinnamon-settings-daemon
And
sudo apt install --reinstall mint-meta-cinnamon mint-meta-core mint-meta-codecs
is the 3rd one then
Ok
Ok. can you try to add a new user and see if it works on that account? you can try doing that using settings app if you can open it. or else in terminal sudo useradd newuser ; sudo passwd newuser
He should try these 3 and restart first
yep
Also see if you can login to cinnamon (software render)
Brings me back to login
Did you do the 3 commands? were they successful? Have you restarted?
Yes
Does the right click work? Does it bring up the menu?
Yes
It starts to seem to me like it works, but you removed the panel somehow
I can't move Windows either
@south bramble Do you know how to restore defalt panel if it was removed?
The X used for closing windows are gone
No
@weary epoch if you type
cinnamon-settings&
what happens?
try cinnamon-settings panel
it will open the settings and click reset
Also show us
inxi -Gxxx
show us
just click reset in there
There is no reset
picture please
Actually I don't see a reset in my panel settings either. There's an option in troubleshoot menu if you right click the panel.... but that requires a panel to right-click.
It seems
gsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamon
will also reset settings
@weary epoch
inxi -Gxxx
please
K
.... and show the output
Alright, type
gsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamon
Nothing happened
And then press
ctrl+alt+esc
A what?

K
man what got u into installing that deb file 😭
@weary epoch And you never told us if those 3 apt commands were successful or not
Which ones?
it worked
he said yes previously
wait a min is the screen teared or idk?
umm.... maximize terminal and try
journalctl -b -p3 --no-pager
No
Can't maximize
Can you drag at the window's corner?
No
Then press ctrl+alt+f2
login there and type
journalctl -b -p3 --no-pager
Amazing how all this crashed down from 1 package install. Unless there was something else going on too
yep the binary didnt matched and thus this happened
so does it work with the other user?
No
I ended up reinstalling Linux Mint entirely. I managed to back up my files so yippie
Thanks to everyone for your help
Set up timeshift this time
