#so many damn problems

this is it saying it successfully formatted my usb, while you can clearly see files in the usb
are you trying to just clean off the USB?
and was this USB disk previously prepared with Etcher?
cuz etcher is a b*tch, but not hard to remove if you use right tool
trying to figure out why A) when i create a bootable media it "works" but then when i turn my pc off and on with the usb in AND fast boot turned off, and B) when i create the bootable media that doesnt work, i can put the drivers, or anything else, in the drive because it claims theres no space left
and yes i used etcher
and am currently trying the use etcher to create the bootable media
bootable for what?
because every other software i try to use doesnt work
windows 11
i tried rufus, which doesnt recognize the iso file or the usb drive, and this other one that just doesnt work at all
first off, etcher wont work to make a winstaller, 2ndly, use ventoy : it will clean the usb fully, and then make it ready so u can just copy/paste windows 11 ISO on it
see #1295816480256163892
oh yeah ventoy was the other one i tried that didnt work at all
u should try it in wimboot mode
no clue what that means
unless the flash didnt copy perfect
u must wait at least a minute after iso copied
but i tried opening all four of the ventoygui files that came with the zip file, and none of them appear to do anything
first, u have to unzip the tar.gz
then the link above shows exactlyyyyy how to run and use
only use the ventoygui x86_64
right now im trying to format the usb stick with the "disks" software that came with the distro
ventou will wipe it
should i just cancel the formatting?
i used the two gears menu
it only had one partition so i figured that would have been fine
i already have the driver i need
so read guide up to step 4b ,, but then stop at that point and tag me
*read and do up to
ok ive cleared it and switched the partition style@crystal oasis
ok next, go to option again
partition config
leave space at end of drive: 3 GiB
partition style as gpt for any new computers running picky uefi
once that's done, click 'install' button
once ventoy is installed, it should show gpt, and padlock icon on both sides
@limpid crown got it?
once it's done, close the ventoy installer, and open DISKS app
click the 3GB "free space" u had left, and then the + button to add a new volume there: make it FAT32
name SPARE
Once done, u may put any unzipped drivers win 11 may need for chipset, storage, etc there on SPARE
sorry had to go deal with my dogs for a second
and copy the win ISO onto the new empty VENTOY partition on usb, follow ALL of step 6 closely for that
i missclicked when typing the name, is that fine or do i need to redo it?
alright i did all of that
@crystal oasis I shutdown and it's stuck on the mint logo on both monitors
Alright
and name doesnt matter all that much, so long as u know it
did u wait a full-ass minute after ISO said finished copying?
I walked away from my computer for a bit after moving it over
Definitely more than a minute
well it takes 5 minute s or so to copy roughly
plus 1 full minute rest after
as step 6b mentions
Right
it says half minute cuz mint iso is smaller, thus less data
It still just has the mint logo
anyway idk if the microsoft site offers a checksum hash for the win 11 iso
Oh it just shut down
I have two boot options that look like they are the USB, but I'm not certain, UEFI: general UDisk 5.00, partition 2, and partition 3
Oh and one that doesn't say partition
Are any of these the bootable media?
And you said boot in wimboot mode right?
plain udisk is legacy-boot usb
Well no
Oh I thought I remembered you saying something about that
idk how far u even got last time with ventoy
yep
That did work
give it a solid bunch of time to boot the winstaller
are u removing linux for windows?
Yup
It had too many problems that I just didn't feel like dealing with on a daily driver
if windows asks for storage driver, browse to SPARE disk
Maybe one day I can get a 2nd PC to mess around with but not today
u may need them later once finally at win desktop after 4 reboots (for sound, touch, network, etc)
yw
I really don't understand how people just jump straight to Linux as their only os
non gamers like me, easy as fkn pie
Even the non gaming stuff I had trouble with
The biggest problem I had was when I looked up how to do something, I would get a reddit forum where all the answers are assuming you know way more than I knew
well the way i started was running a live usb - with persistent save - for a whole bunch of months before installing onto another pc finally
Maybe I'll try that
two words: Joe Collins
- youtube ^
Ah
u can make a persistent usb with existing ventoy stick too
I like Linux as a concept because Windows is so ass, but I also want just a little bit of convenience
it's a ventoy plugin, that lets u keep a dat file which is essentially a big save ile
Also switching to Linux or at least dual booting would be way easier if I had a NAS
well a NAS is good for backup, general data
Yeah I need that for my blender files
(dont attempt to boot from a NAS)
Of course
Ok stepping off a min.
Alright, again thanks for all your assistance
btw, this is due to how Etcher makes nearly the whole USB drive (except 5 MB) into one big read-only DVD impersonation.
near very bottom of this post, an alternate method to undo that via just Windows diskpart tool is referenced. (and ofc the ventoy way)
