#Can't boot into SSD

ok first off you can screenshot with win + shift + s
i dont know anything else abt this i just thought i'd mention that
can you read the contents of the disk?
like, browse and open any files in it?
Nope
one thing is not being able to boot it
it is an entirely different thing not being able to open any file within
much worse
I see
Im fine with clean install of any OS but its not allowing me to install any OS as well
I am not an expert beyond this point, my guess it that it's cooked
you could try reformatting it but you'll obviously lose whatever you have still stored in it
it's over then
if all your pc can do is acknowledge the disk, but not open nor read what's in it, it's over
IF you had any sensitive data you may need to get professional technical help
Can a malware do this shit?
the SSD market is a big one, there exist a ton of manufaacturers of varying degrees of quality
some SSDs may last very little
Stunner_619 also mentioned
depends if it's a REAL SSD, or a soldered-on piece of CRAP called Universal Flash Storage (UFS)
It's from lapcare, if you heave ever heard of it.....
never
@hasty niche so should I order a new SSD?
but I'm not the most knowledgable persson aabout SSDs either
unless you're fine not using your PC
Man my hdd from 2018 is still working and this SSD just got borked
I mean I had to do some important work 💀
Either I send this to a technician or get a new SSD and move on
like I said above, it's a big market with maaaaany manufacturer companies (many chinese cheap ones, for instance)
Can I get a SSD from samsung?
Yea the hdd is from default manufacturer (dell) and SSD was later on installed
my SSDs are from Corsair, Western Digital and Gigabyte
I tried installing windows and fedora linux. Nothing worked
all have worked me for over two years so I recommend those brands
dunno about Samsung I don't really trust them
but that is just my opinion ofc
Maybe it bricked firmware
So basically what happened is
I suspected yesterday that some malware was there in pc cause I was downloading something
So I decided to reinstall my windows again
It was all okay in morning
Until I checked my pc again in evening and suddenly BSOD appeared
Since then, the situation is same
boot up a linux live usb u can also run SMART tests from its included DISKS app (in a 3 dot menu icon) in such app
I did
From fedora live iso
I also have sysrescue iso
if you have Windows pc, and can test this drive as a guinea pig, use a piece of software called "Validrive" from gibson research. I think it may run from Hirens environment also if u download it
you may also research the suspected malware, and read any reported symptoms it causes. I dont really think malware did the drive in though.
Oh really?
If it's not malware then it's still better. I could just replace new ssd
ADATA SU- series is good from my experience, as is Crucial BX- series I've heard
I will have to check for malware
There are two drives there
One is hdd and other is ssd
validrive only tests flash memory storage
SSD is cooked pretty much but I'm worried for hdd
so the SSD
Wait let me check
@barren tulip it says, it's not compatible
With windows PE
oh
@barren tulip there is also a tool called HD tune
just install Linux on part of the HDD, and at least you'll be able to have an OS
nah
Im scanning through it
Manual partitioning ahh
you may use Aomei Partition Assistant (included on Hirens) to shrink part of the HDD now
eg: 50 GiB is reasonable for Linux. not glorious, but reasonable
Can I send this pc for repair?
so if u have at least that much free space on a partition of the HDD, shrink the partition by 50
i would just take the SSD out
1 tb hdd free space almost 950 💀
Yea I have space for that
if u have tons of money to throw around , go to repair shop
yeah so even shrink by 100 GB then
whatever.
Not tons of money but he is my father's friend
And the same shopkepper I bought this pc
hdd isn't too insanely slow . i've been using some hdd in live mode for testing
It's not about speed anymore
Im just thinking how will I remove linux later on?
so... i recommend what i said. shrink, install linux then work on your tasks
it's not that hard.
Thanks,I will look into it
Anyways there is only one question, how can I determine this SSD has been bricked by malware ot it's just normal SSD failure
pretend this is your HDD
No, it's okay I will install fedora on it since I have the iso
pretend there's a partition before those, called sda0 (that's your existing data there)
fine the same applies to fedora
u make shrink first
then add an EFI partition to the space (size shown above)
then add an ext4 or btrfs partition to the free space (mount at / ... can be like 50 to 99.5 GiB)
And what about the already stored data?
i just said example below pic
Anyways my main concern is this
take it in for testing n research the suspected malware i said
if u think the UEFI is compromised, then get new bios from manufacture of motherboard/pc website, and reflash fresh BIOS
take the 'dead' hard drive out immediately
treat it as a virus zombie
I can enter into bios and do everything
put it into a ziplock bag
send it to drivesavers or another data recovery service and buy a new ssd from Lexar
Im buying new ssd
This time from a legit brand
Anyways, I'm scanning my pc via Kaspersky rescue tool
To check if my uefi is compromised or not
These are reputable manufacturers, plus these one(s) I use since years: kingston, crucial, sandisk, adata. samsung is also good, but overrated and overpriced, I think.
@sleek flower Check if the new model offer SMART - not all do that.
I am looking out for WD
can confirm about WD and sandisk, my SSDs are WD and my flash drive is sandisk
Yea I also have sandisk USB drive
